The Glassworker

Pakistani animator Usman Riaz's The Glassworker is a seminal hand-drawn animation feature, ten years in the making. Usman and his collaborators at Mano Animation Studios had to build the infrastructure from scratch to create Pakistan's first animated film, which premiered at the prestigious 2024 Annecy International Film Festival.

Directed and written by Riaz and co-writer Moya O'Shea, the story revolves around Vincent (Sacha Dhawan) and his father Tomas (Art Malik), whose peaceful life running a glasswork shop in a small town is disturbed by conflict sweeping down from the north. The father and son's relationship is tested when Vincent falls in love with Alliz (Anjli Mohindra), a talented violinist who is the daughter of the newly stationed colonel (Tony Jayaward). Their desire for one another and their creative souls are an affront to a harsher sensibility fuelled by patriotism, where tradition would deny Vincent and Alliz's love.

Usman Riaz’s Annecy selection “The Glassworker” has unveiled its first trailer. The film will also screen at the Cannes Film Market and has set a date for theatrical release in Pakistan.

The animated film will debut in Annecy’s Contrechamp strand. Directed by James Cameron, True Lies was released in theaters in 1994. The film starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as a family man with a double life as a secret agent, whose wife, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, unwittingly gets involved in a dangerous mission. A lost silent horror movie classic, "London After Midnight," will be brought back to life as a full-cast audio drama, giving audiences a chance to experience the story in a new format. The original film, released in 1927, is considered lost due to the destruction of the last remaining print in a fire. Previous restoration efforts have only provided glimpses of what the film may have been. The upcoming audio production will feature a voice cast including Art Malik, and will be recorded in Dolby Atmos for an immersive listening experience. It will be released as a limited edition vinyl and episodically this fall.

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid debuted on Disney+ last week and made one hell of a splash. According to Disney, The Little Mermaid has garnered 16 million views in its first five days on the streaming service, which makes it the most-watched Disney movie premiere on Disney+ since the release of Hocus Pocus 2 last year.

While The Little Mermaid wasn’t one of Disney’s strongest-performing live-action remakes, it went on to gross $569 million worldwide and stands (so far) as one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. Judging by the streaming numbers, it seems that many were eager to revisit The Little Mermaid (or watch it for the first time) on the streaming service. Disney says that a view is defined as total stream time divided by runtime.

The live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid utilized CGI and special effects to create the underwater world and was filmed in Sardinia, Italy, to give it a Caribbean feel. The villages of Santa Teresa di Gallura and Castelsardo in Sardinia were used to film various scenes. Pinewood Studios in England provided the water stages for sea sequences and sets for the interior of Eric's castles, making it the central filming location for The Little Mermaid.

The 2023 live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid takes place in the fictional underwater kingdom of Atlantica and a town on the coast of the Caribbean. Still, the movie's cast and crew never ventured to the Caribbean to film scenes. The Disney film, which is the latest of a string of live-action remakes of animation classics from the production studio, obviously utilized extensive computer-generated imagery (CGI) and special effects to create the colorful and realistic underwater world of The Little Mermaid.

The Little Mermaid makes a splash amid its Disney+ release with a new trailer to mark its long-awaited arrival on the streamer.

Disney+ premiered the new trailer on Sept. 4, two days ahead of the movie's release via the streaming service, showcasing Ariel (Halle Bailey), Sebastian (Daveed Diggs) and co. engaging in underwater and land adventures throughout the 30-second clip. The trailer also shows Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) telling Ariel she just got the "premium package" as Ariel explores life above water as the narrator encourages viewers to "stream it and sing it, again and again" when checking out the movie.

Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s directorial ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, which has completed 10 years this month, will be re-released in a special way, significantly for hearing and speech-impaired people, with the special sign language, in 30 cities across India.

Released in 2013, the Farhan Akhtar starrer traced the inspiring journey of the Indian Sprint legend late Milkha Singh, and how he overcame many agonizing obstacles in order to become a world champion, Olympian, and one of India’s most iconic athletes.

The makers will pay tribute to late Milkha Singh by re-releasing the inspirational biographical sports drama on August 6, in selected theaters. The film will be screened for the hearing and speech-impaired people, in the PVR theaters, and will be showcased with the special sign language.

Moreover, the special screening scheduled for July 26 in Mumbai, for hearing and speech-impaired, will witness the cast paying homage to the “Flying Sikh”.
