“The assumption on my part was always that Frasier had grown,” says Frasier EP and star Kelsey Grammer as he joined a panel for the Paramount+ series at Deadline’s TV Contenders. “He’s an older man now – wiser, smarter, hopefully funnier and a little less hysterical about some things but still a man of honed, refined tastes and insists on living well.”
The Paramount+ reprisal of Frasier, a spin-off of Cheers, follows the next chapter in the life of the psychiatrist turned-radio host Frasier Crane. After returning to Boston from Seattle, Frasier takes on new challenges and relationships in hopes of living out a dream or two. The series also stars Jack Cutmore-Scott, Nicholas Lyndhurst and Toks Olagundoye.
“This is one of the most famous character in television, so we wanted to make sure we got it right,” says showrunner Chris Harris. “It was Kelsey’s idea at some point during the process…...

Paramount+ is making way for more tossed salads and scrambled eggs, as Frasier is renewed for a second season.
Frasier is undoubtably one of the most beloved American sitcoms of all time. Spun-off from Cheers, itself an 11 season American institution, Frasier had some of the wittiest writing on television, elevated by the magnificent casting of David Hyde Pierce as Frasier’s equally fastidious brother Niles.
Along with the much missed John Mahoney as their Dad Martin, Jane Leeves as housekeeper Daphne Moon and Peri Gilpin as acerbic producer Roz Doyle, over eleven seasons the show became embedded in American culture.
Talks of a reboot had been going on for years before it finally went into production for Paramount+ in 2022 under the creative team of writers Chris Harris and Joe Cristalli.
It saw Frasier move back to Boston in order to spend more time with his son Freddy, played by Jack Cutmore-Scott.

Continuations of once-hot series are tricky to pull off, but they have a better track record than reboots.
Frasier’s return on Paramount+ had plenty of skeptics due to Kelsey Grammer being the only original star returning as a series regular.
Plenty of cameos were peppered throughout, but the series had a different energy than its predecessor.
Maybe it’s because Frasier was starting a new life in Boston and coming into contact with his son for the first time in years.
It was a late-in-life switch-up for the wise-cracking man who called Seattle his home for many years.
Now that the dust has settled on the revival, it’s time to delve into whether the show performed well enough to secure a pickup for a second season.

Frasier Season 1 ended on a bittersweet note: Christmas.
Of course, there was holiday cheer all around, but there was also some sadness as this was Frasier Crane's first Christmas without his father, Martin.
Martin was always very excited about Christmas, and Frasier wasn't feeling the holiday spirit without his father around.

When Frasier Crane returned to screens in 2023, he did so without any of the supporting cast from his original series. "Frasier" ran for 11 seasons from 1993 to 2004, propelled not only by its lovably pompous protagonist but by a cast who seemed as though they were born to play the various supporting characters. From David Hyde Pierce as Frasier's brother, Niles, to Jane Leeves as housekeeper Daphne, the series was boosted by one of the finest sitcom casts ever assembled.
In 2023, however, not a single cast member besides star Kelsey Grammer came back, prompting the actor and his new writers, Chris Harris and Joe Cristali, to dream up a whole new adventure for the titular doctor. In the "Frasier" revival, Dr. Crane returns to Boston, the city he inhabited when he first appeared as a character on "Cheers," and finds himself surrounded by a whole new group of friends and family. Kelly Clarkson welcomed the prince of pop psychology to the Kellyoke stage during the latest episode of her talk show.
Kelsey Grammer — who starred as psychiatrist Frasier Crane in NBC’s Frasier — joined Clarkson for a duet of the show’s iconic closing theme song, “Tossed Salads & Scrambled Eggs.” Grammer sang the original track that played during the credits of the Cheers spin-off from 1993 to 2004.

The new cast of "Frasier" had big, hilariously pretentious shoes to fill, and when it came to Jack Cutmore-Scott's audition, the pressure was on. The actor, who plays Frasier's son Freddy in the show's revival season, recently spoke to the hosts of "The Talk" about how he landed the presumably highly coveted role, admitting that the presence of not one but two TV legends in the room made the whole process more nerve-wracking.
"It was a fairly conventional process to begin with," Cutmore-Scott told the show's hosts. "You do the tape and you send in the tape and you don't hear anything for weeks and you think, 'Well, that was fun.'" The actor has previously appeared in films like "Tenet" and "Kingsman: The Secret Service" and led the short-lived Fox comedy "Cooper Barrett's Guide To Surviving Life," but "Frasier" is by far his biggest role. The current generation will likely know John Cleese for his Tweets and his Gb News project "The Dinosaur Hour," which recently saw him trading witticisms with Stephen Fry in a 12th-century castle for some reason. Which is a shame because at one time he was pretty much unanimously viewed as a British national treasure and comedy great. So much so that when he dropped in on the "Cheers" crowd back in the '80s, he basically caused the whole show to buckle under the weight of his reputation, at least until the writers managed to compose themselves enough to get his episode back on track.
Appearing in the season 5 installment "Simon Says," Cleese played Dr. Simon Finch-Royce, a renowned marriage counselor and friend of Kelsey Grammer's Frasier Crane, who at one time attended Oxford with the distinguished doctor. 2023 was the year Frasier Crane returned to the small screen following a 20-year break. The "Frasier" revival brought Kelsey Grammer's beloved psychiatrist into the streaming era with a 10-episode series that saw the titular doctor return to Boston some 30 years after he left "Cheers" to star in his own sitcom. That sitcom would, of course, become one of the most celebrated examples of the genre, following Frasier as he started a new life in Seattle alongside his brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce), father Martin (John Mahoney), and their live-in housekeeper Daphne (Jane Leeves).
It was this supporting cast, along with Peri Gilpin as Frasier's talk radio show producer, Roz, that made the show a classic — though, calling them supporting characters isn't really fair. Despite Kelsey Grammer's not-so-modest opinion that his character was the key to the success of "Frasier," Niles, Martin, Daphne, and Roz were equally as important. Sadly,...

There was every reason to be skeptical about the "Frasier" reboot. Back in the '90s, producers David Angell, Peter Casey, and David Lee pulled off the seemingly impossible by spinning off the character of Frasier Crane from "Cheers" and making a sitcom that became as beloved as the classic show from which it had sprung. Running for 11 seasons between 1993 and 2004, "Frasier" set itself apart from every other sitcom with a mix of highbrow humor and heart, made all the more effective by one of the best ensemble casts ever assembled on the small screen. By the time the show wrapped and Frasier departed his native Seattle for a new life in Chicago, we'd had 11 arguably perfect seasons.
So, the idea of reviving the show 20 years after the close of the original was both an exciting and daunting prospect. After all, how was our beloved Dr. Crane, who seemed to...

The "Frasier" revival show has wrapped up its Paramount+ run with a Christmas installment that, at times, manages to recapture the "Frasier" magic which has mostly eluded the series thus far. Earlier episodes have provided significant nostalgia hits by giving us a touching tribute to the late Martin actor John Mahoney, and a special guest appearance from Bebe Neuwirth as Frasier's ex-wife Lilith. But showrunners Joe Cristali and Chris Harris have saved the best for last.
The tenth and final episode of the new series, "Reindeer Games," not only sees the writers try their hand at a classic "Frasier" farce, it also features the return of Peri Gilpin as Roz, Frasier's former radio producer from the original series. Not content with just one major nostalgia hit, the episode also opens with the titular doctor sitting mournfully among his late father's Christmas decorations, which feature two specific items that appeared in previous "Frasier" episodes.

This article contains spoilers for the "Frasier" reboot season finale.
With this latest episode, the holiday-themed "Reindeer Games," the first season of Paramount's "Frasier" revival has finally come to an end. It's felt both too short and dragged out, refreshingly joyous and embarrassingly flat, an important addition to the modern TV landscape and an unnecessary one. As we viewers (and we at /Film) anatomize the revival's hits and misses, it's important to pause and reflect on the complicated and synecdotal final bang the season went out on. That would be the return of Peri Gilpin's Roz.
"Reindeer Games" comes as close to classic "Frasier" farce as any episode this season, save a few gags, like Eve's (Jess Salgueiro) convoluted play in episode 6, "Blind Date," June Diane Raphael's guest appearance in that same episode, and a smattering of references to deep cut original series lore. Kelsey Grammer sounded curt this morning when he brusquely told a BBC Today program interviewer that he still supports Donald Trump but, according to his interviewer, this curtness doesn’t tell the full story.
Grammer’s interviewer Justin Webb said the Frasier star was “perfectly happy” to go on talking about his support for the former Potus, “the Paramount+ PR team, less so.”
Grammer has previously expressed support for Trump – a relatively rare position for a TV and movie star to take – and he also used his BBC interview to back Roseanne Barr, another self-confessed Trump supporter.
Towards the end of the interview, Webb asks Grammer: “You mentioned Roseanne early on who had a great comeback but also was a Trump supporter. You were, at least you were, a Trump supporter, I’m fascinated to know if you still are?”
Grammer responded: “I am, and I’ll let that be the end of it.

As for what she thinks Roz has been up to over the last twenty years, Gilpin believes her character would have remained in the world of radio.

The "Frasier" revival started out in much the same way as the original series. On the beloved sitcom, which ran from 1993 to 2004, the titular doctor arrived in a new city which was actually an old city. Having lived in Boston during the years he spent as a regular on "Cheers," Frasier moved back to his native Seattle to start a new life as a newly-divorced bachelor and host of a radio call-in show. But his plans promptly changed when he was left with no choice but to take in his elderly father, Martin (John Mahoney) and the pair were forced to confront their differences.
In the revival show, Frasier once again moves to a new city which is actually an old city. Arriving back in Beantown, the doctor plans on visiting his son, Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott) before departing for Paris. But once again, his plans change, and he finds himself with a new roommate,...

The Cranes might be the smartest family in TV history. At least in sitcom history. In terms of sheer brain power, the "Big Bang Theory" crew certainly have them beat, but Kelsey Grammer's Frasier, his brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce), and ex-wife Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) -- all psychologists -- command a ferocious amount of cultural and academic intellect between them. Heck, add the intuitive prowess of Niles' wife Daphne (Jane Leeves) and the street smarts of the boys' father Martin (John Mahoney) into the mix and you've got a meeting at the minds that could test the very mettle of Mensa.
Across the original series' eleven seasons, Frasier's and Niles' intellects were frequently used as the immovable objects that story plots wound around, crashed into, undercut, and attempted to outpace to generate laughs. The Crane boys were so smart, so many episodes contended, that they would find themselves blithely...

In /Film's review for the "Frasier" revival, Josh Spiegel described it as neither disappointing nor remarkable. Which is pretty much the perfect description for the supporting characters. After Jane Leeves, who played Daphne Moon on the original series, and David Hyde Pierce, who played Niles, passed on the opportunity to come back, showrunners Chris Harris and Joe Cristali had to go back to the drawing board. Along with star Kelsey Grammer, who remains the only original cast member to return in a recurring capacity, Harris and Cristali drew up a new plan for their revival show.
Now airing on Paramount+, that show has done its absolute best to chart a new course for Frasier Crane while remaining faithful to the original show. There are even callbacks to "Cheers" where the character of Frasier first debuted. But try as it might, the new series just can't seem to overcome the lack of the original supporting cast.

Nearly four decades after playing Frasier Crane in the third season of Cheers and thirty years since Frasier Crane got his own show, Kelsey Grammer is back with a Frasier revival, currently streaming on Paramount+.
The series takes fans on a new adventure with the titular Frasier, older and wiser with hopes of fixing his relationship with his grown-up son Frederick “Freddy” Crane, played by Jack Cutmore-Scott, whom he shares with his ex-wife Lilith Sternin (Bebe Neuwirth). Oh, and all of this is taking place in Boston, a change from Seattle where the original spinoff series was set but where everything began for Frasier.
Grammer spoke to Deadline about why the new series’ focus was the perfect next chapter, reuniting with both Neuwirth and director James Burrows, and more.

It’s a chilly February evening on the Paramount lot as Kelsey Grammer transforms into Frasier Crane for the first time in nearly two decades. It’s an emotional moment on set, both nostalgic and anticipatory. The sets are new, as is every cast member besides Grammer. But behind the camera, legendary director James Burrows shares some continuity with Grammer — having been there from the character’s 1984 beginning on “Cheers.”
Even months later, with the 2023 “Frasier” now on the air (via Paramount+), Grammer gets choked up when asked about what returning to the character — and having institutions like Burrows (one of the original “Cheers” creators) back on board — means to him.
“It’s a piece of personal heaven for me that Jimmy Burrows is still in my life,” Grammer says, his voice cracking just a bit. “And I will always feel that way about him. He’s really helpful. And...

From “Cheers” to “Frasier,” Kelsey Grammer’s Frasier Crane was a mainstay of comedy TV for 20 years, from the ’80s to the early-aughts. Now, after an equal amount of time off the air, Grammer is back in the role for Paramount+’s “Frasier.”
The streaming series is a revival-meets-reboot that once again spins off Grammer’s character with a new cast of colorful characters. Some original “Frasier” stars will return to guest star. However, David Hyde Pierce won’t return as Niles and John Mahoney, who played their father Martin, passed away in 2018.
That means Frasier – along with “Frasier” fans – will be surrounded by new faces. With that in mind, here’s a handy guide to the new “Frasier” cast and characters, including where you might have the actors before.

Kelsey Grammer has returned to television as the iconic Dr. Frasier Crane, roughly 30 years after the original NBC sitcom first premiered. The Paramount+ revival sees the titular character return to Boston for the next chapter of his life, with new challenges to face, new relationships to forge and an old dream or two to finally fulfill.
In addition to Grammer, the show’s cast includes Jack Cutmore-Scott as Frasier’s son Freddy, Nicholas Lyndhurst as Frasier’s old college buddy turned university professor Alan, Toks Olagundoye as Olivia, Alan’s colleague and head of the university’s psychology department, Jess Salgueiro as Freddy’s roommate Eve and Anders Keith as Frasier’s nephew David.
Co-showrunners Joe Cristalli and Chris Harris told TheWrap that, while there are multiple Easter Eggs and references sprinkled throughout the series, they didn’t want to rely on them as a crutch.

Lilith is back!
With Frasier's return to Boston, it was only a matter of time before Dr. Lilith Sternin returned, and it finally occurred during Frasier Season 1 Episode 7.
Frasier and Lilith's relationship dates back to the 1980s, when they met, married, and divorced during Cheers.
Despite their split, Lilith has always been one of Frasier's most entertaining romantic matches and sparring partners.
Even with all of the ongoing jokes about Lilith being ice cold to the touch, there has always been a fire that's burned between these two characters, and even between Lilith and Frasier's brother, Niles, during an ill-advised one-night stand on the original Frasier.
Although Lilith traded in for her conservative tightly pulled bun for a semi-conservative bob cut, Bebe Neuwirth still brought her A-game and slipped into this extraordinary character seamlessly.
Lilith: Hello, Frasier.
Frasier: Lilith. Dear God. Who looked in the mirror and said your name three times?...

What made the original "Frasier" series so good? It's a question we at /Film have been feverishly searching for answers to in light of Paramount+'s release of the "Frasier" revival, which is quite mixed, if it's the original series you're holding it to as a standard. There aren't as many jokes per minute, the understanding of its central character isn't always perfect, and they're only just figuring out which elements from the original series were okay to discard, and which needed to be in the mix for the cake to come out tasty.
One of the shakier aspects of this calculus has been the revival's handling of its character dynamics. This is a fully defensible area of weakness -- character dynamics are both the hardest aspect of sitcoms to iron out and the singular aspect that makes them soar or sink. Opinions vary, but if you ask for mine,...

Frasier and his son Freddy will have a new thing to fight about this week.
June Diane Raphael (Grace and Frankie) guest-stars in next Thursday’s episode as June, a friend of Eve’s who has been set up on a blind date with Frasier. Or Freddy. Actually, they can’t figure out which one. TVLine has an exclusive clip from the episode — which you can watch above — with a blissfully unaware Frasier welcoming June into his home and marveling at her refined taste in home furnishings and music. Could this be a match? Or is he setting himself up for huge disappointment?...

This article contains spoilers for "Frasier."Reboots, revivals, and spinoffs are odd things. So often they reek of money-grubbing creative bankruptcy, their only reason for existing being they might squeeze a bit more money out of a loyal audience before their passion slowly fizzles out. Sometimes it's clear that whoever had the most driving power behind them — the directors, the stars, usually the producers — cared only about what they could get from the new project, not about how it might retroactively impugn the legacy of the original. And sometimes, even despite all that, they still have something worthwhile to offer. Odd!
Paramount+'s "Frasier" revival falls somewhere in the vast grey area between a revivification so thoughtful and bold that it improves upon the original and a total disaster. In this very publication you can take in the range of perspectives that have generally characterized the reactions to the revival.

What would "Frasier" be without its supporting cast? Well, now we know. The "Frasier" revival has finally hit Paramount+ with only Kelsey Grammer returning, and the result is something that's neither disappointing nor remarkable. The original sitcom ran for 11 seasons from 1993 to 2004, and featured a cast of beloved characters that helped ground the often insufferably pompous Frasier Crane as he went about trying to build a new life for himself in Seattle.
Whether it was John Mahoney as Frasier's blue collar cop father, Martin, or Peri Gilpin as his straight-talking producer, Roz, the titular shrink always had people around him that helped to highlight his own pretentiousness when he most needed it. David Hyde Pierce as Frasier's Brother Niles would often encourage the ego-driven pomposity, but much like star Kelsey Grammer, the actor brought such a likable quality to the role that Niles remained as endearing as everyone else in the show.

Frasier is a snob. It's a well established aspect of his character that made for some of the best jokes of the original sitcom's 11 seasons. But with the new "Frasier" revival series on Paramount+, something's changed.
Back when the show first debuted in 1993, Frasier's elitism was immediately played up as one of his major character flaws, and treated as a source of unending comedy. The clash of tastes between him and his blue collar retired cop father, Martin (John Mahoney), basically provided the central "sit" out of which the "com" arose.
There was also a heart to both the character and the show, which frequently became apparent as a result of the conflict between Frasier and his dad. For example, when the former threw out the latter's beloved recliner because it clashed with his apartment's more refined decor, Martin went on an extended monologue about why the chair meant so much to him,...

Of all the guest stars we want to see in the "Frasier" reboot, Bebe Neuwirth's Dr. Lilith Sternin isn't the highest on our list. But that doesn't mean we won't welcome the return of Frasier's ex-wife, who throughout both "Cheers" and "Frasier" made for some memorable storylines and jokes. Frankly, the new "Frasier" is neither disappointing nor remarkable thus far, and continues to suffer due to its lack of the original supporting cast. Which is why a Lilith episode wouldn't be the worst thing.
The character first debuted in the 1986 "Cheers" episode "Second Time Around" where she went on a date with the good doctor. Much like how Frasier was intended to be a one-and-done character but was brought back after his initial run of episodes, Lilith then returned to "Cheers" as a regular cast member, marrying Frasier and giving birth to their son, Freddy, in the 1989 episode "The Stork Brings a Crane.

“Fraiser” is back for the first time in nearly 20 years, with Kelsey Grammar’s titular character returning to a TV industry entirely transformed — which means you won’t find the new series airing on its old network home, NBC.
In fact, you won’t find the sitcom on broadcast TV. The new “Frasier” series is headed straight to streaming, which means there are lots of changes in tow — and not just the distributor.
From the smaller episode count to the cast full of new faces, here’s everything you need to know about the “Frasier” reboot, where to watch it and when to expect new episodes.
Where is the new “Frasier” series streaming?
“Frasier” Episodes 1 and 2 are now streaming exclusively on Paramount+.
How many episodes are in the “Frasier” reboot?
Another sign of the streaming era, the new season of “Frasier” is only 10 episodes long. All 11 seasons of the original series had standard 24-episode seasons.

Oh dear. The "Frasier" revival was going so well. Or at least it hadn't yet completely tarnished the legacy of one of the great sitcoms. This week, the third episode arrived, however, and things got a little too silly.
Since Kelsey Grammer's lovably pretentious psychiatrist returned to our screens, critics have been divided. The "Frasier" revival seemed doomed to fail after it was revealed that no one besides Grammer would be returning, and when the first episode dropped on Paramount+ on October 12, 2023, the response was mixed. /Film's Josh Spiegel had the correct opinion that the revival was neither disappointing nor remarkable, but many critics were just wrong, and frankly outright hostile to the series. USA Today's review remains the worst, referring to the "Frasier" revival as "unfunny, stilted and downright insipid."
In our nostalgia-obsessed monoculture, this kind of reaction makes sense. Did we need to revisit "Frasier" in 2023? David Hyde Pierce,...

Frasier Crane is back on our screens in a "Frasier" revival that's neither disappointing nor remarkable. The new show is in the unfortunate position of having to revive one of the most beloved sitcoms of all time without any of the supporting cast that made it such a hit during its original 1993-2004 run. The only cast member returning from the original sitcom is Kelsey Grammer himself — which, if you ask the "Frasier" star, isn't a bad thing as he is, after all, the key to the success of the show.
Sadly, that hasn't necessarily played out thus far, as the revival show manages to keep much of the humor and heart that defined the original but still somehow fails to capture its magic. After a heartwarming tribute to Martin Crane actor John Mahoney in the inaugural episode, "Frasier" 2023 sort of limps on while demonstrating flashes of the brilliance that...

Frasier is back, and while the new revival show is neither disappointing nor remarkable, it's at least managed not to sully the legacy of Frasier Crane. The original show remains a beloved sitcom, running for 11 seasons between 1993-2004 and following the character's exploits in his native Seattle. At the end of that series, the titular psychiatrist jets off to Chicago where, we learn from the revival show, he hosted a "Dr. Phil"-style talk show for many years. After his TV career ended and his marriage broke down, however, the lovably pompous doctor decided to head for Paris to write a new book. But in the first episode of the "Frasier" reboot, he stops in Boston to visit his son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott) and is convinced to stay, not just to take up an offer of employment at Harvard, but to reconnect with Freddy and make up for years of shaky fathering.

It’s Frasier Week at IndieWire. Grab some tossed salad and scrambled eggs, settle into your coziest easy chair, and join us. We’re listening.
Frasier Crane is back in our lives as of October 12, when a revival featuring the return of Kelsey Grammer’s iconic character debuts on Paramount+.
IndieWire’s TV critic Ben Travers gave the revival series a “C” grade, writing, “Hearkening back to its broadcast roots, episodes are recorded in front of a live, studio audience, yet they run 26-29 minutes a piece, exhibiting the same streaming bloat that can slowly sink comedies. Good rapport surfaces on occasion, usually between Frasier and Alan, but most of the jokes are loud and obvious, broad and forced. When Frasier isn’t on screen, the show feels like a below-average sitcom — there’s no hook to it, nothing that makes these characters spring to life like Niles, Martin, and Daphne did decades ago.

The first two episodes of Frasier are now streaming on Paramount+. Beyond Kelsey Grammer as the titular character, there aren’t a lot of familiar faces in the sequel series. That will change as the season progresses, with both Lilith (Bebe Neuwirth) and Roz (Peri Gilpin) set to make appearances, but might we see the return of any Og Cheers characters in Frasier?
Frasier showrunners Joe Cristalli and Chris Harris recently spoke with Variety about developing the new series and their position on bringing in characters from Cheers or Frasier beyond Lilith and Roz.
“It feels like maybe we haven’t earned that yet,” Cristalli said. “Any more than that in Season 1 probably would have been a bit too far. But like I can’t wait to bring back Bb Glaser or Gil or Bulldog. Niles, if he’ll do it, or Daphne. Anybody that wants to would be great.

Kelsey Grammer returned as the erudite Frasier Crane as the Paramount+ revival of Frasier debuted on Thursday, October 12. The show was, of course, missing the late, beloved John Mahoney, who portrayed Frasier’s retired police officer father, Martin Crane, in the original 1993 series. Mahoney, known for his work in Say Anything, Hot in Cleveland, and on the stage, passed away in 2018 at the age of 77. Here’s how the revival honored his legacy in the pilot episode: Frasier reveals to his friend and former mentor, Alan (Nicholas Lyndhurst), that his father recently passed away and his son, Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott), didn’t attend the funeral. The episode culminates with a heartfelt conversation between Freddy and Frasier, addressing why the young man missed his own grandfather’s burial. “I was about to get on the plane, and I was thinking about grandpa,” Freddy says with tears. “I just couldn’t do it.

In 2024, it will be 40 years since the character of Frasier Crane first debuted on TV. Appearing in the season 3 premiere of "Cheers" back in 1984, the character went on to become the protagonist of his own show, which ran from 1993 to 2004 and doubled down on Kelsey Grammer's remarkable knack for playing the lovably pretentious psychiatrist. Now, the character is once again back as part of the "Frasier" revival series that just hit Paramount+, and he's very much returned to his roots.
Whereas the original "Frasier" saw the titular psychiatrist return to his native Seattle, the new series is set back in Boston — home of the Cheers bar where his character first appeared. In the years between the original "Frasier" and this new series, the good doctor has been living in Chicago, but returns to Boston after his marriage ends and he feels compelled to become more involved in his son Freddy's (Jack Cutmore-Scott) life.

I'll admit, I had mixed feelings going into this Frasier reboot on Paramount+.
I was never the biggest fan of Cheers, but I loved the original Frasier and have watched it from pilot to series finale numerous times. The cast of that series possessed the unique mix of talent and chemistry that resulted in TV magic.
The odds were long that a reboot could recapture our love for Frasier and his family over those eleven seasons. Longer still, with most of the original cast missing. I was heartbroken to hear that David Hyde Pierce would not be returning as Niles.
So, upon viewing the new Frasier Season 1 Episode 1, I wasn't surprised that the show had its flaws, but it also has a lot of potential.
Frasier is starting over yet again, this time back in Boston, but expect only a scant aside to his days at that famous bar.

So, upon viewing the new Frasier Season 1 Episode 1, I wasn't surprised that the show had its flaws, but it also has a lot of potential.
Frasier is starting over yet again, this time back in Boston, but expect only a scant aside to his days at that famous bar.

In Paramount+’s “Frasier” reboot, Kelsey Grammer’s iconic character has returned to Boston for his next chapter, as he looks to reconnect with his son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott).
The move finds the psychiatrist and former radio show host leave behind many beloved characters from the original NBC sitcom, including his brother Niles (David Hyde Pierce). Earlier this year, Pierce revealed that he would not be reprising the role, which showrunners Chris Harris (“How I Met Your Mother”) and Joe Cristalli (“Life in Pieces”) admitted was “a tough setback in the moment, but ultimately very freeing.”
“It let us build the show more organically from the ground up, focusing more on Frasier and Freddie’s relationship,” Harris told TheWrap. “The flip side of that is we don’t have several of the beloved characters that the original series had.”

It has been nearly 20 years since Dr. Crane “left the building,” bidding farewell on the NBC series “Frasier” that took home 37 Emmy Awards including five for Comedy Series. But now Kelsey Grammer has stepped into the role of his most enduring alter ego once more in a revival of the show on Paramount+. The first two episodes of the new series — which introduces a new ensemble cast surrounding Grammer as Frasier moves back to Boston, Ma — debut on Oct. 12 on the streamer.
By most accounts, critics have embraced Frasier’s idiosyncrasies all over again. As of this writing, the series has a 61 score on Metacritic, indicating “generally favorable” reviews. It has a similar 63% freshness score on Rotten Tomatoes, with their critical consensus reading, “With Kelsey Grammer safely back in the role he was born to play, ‘Frasier’ scores as comfort viewing even if it can’t quite compare to the classic original series.

When the "Frasier" revival series was announced, one of the biggest concerns for fans of the original sitcom was which cast members from the original iteration of the show would be returning. Part of what was so great about "Frasier," which ran for 11 seasons from 1993 to 2004, was the incredible supporting cast surrounding Kelsey Grammer's titular shrink. John Mahoney, who played Frasier's retired cop father, Martin, was the perfect foil for his sons' hifalutin hijinks, while Roz Doyle (Peri Gilpin), Frasier's producer at his radio station, also provided a more down-to-earth energy to help ground the show. The same was true of Jane Leeves, who played Martin's live-in carer, Daphne Moon.
But it was arguably David Hyde Pierce as Frasier's equally pompous-yet-lovable brother, Niles, who was the most memorable supporting character. The chemistry between Grammer and Hyde Pierce was so effective it was as if you were watching two actual brothers banter back and forth.
