Dystopian novel Prophet Song by Irish author Paul Lynch has won the 2023 Booker Prize.
Set in Dublin, the story follows a family dealing with a terrifying new world in which democracy falls away.
The prestigious book award has previously been won by novels including The English Patient, The Remains Of The Day, Life Of Pi, The White Tiger, and Wolf Hall, all of which have been adapted into successful movies or TV series.
Chair of Judges, Esi Edugyan, described Prophet Song, which was the bookmakers’ favorite to win the prize, as “soul-shattering and true,” adding that readers “will not soon forget its warnings.”
The subject matter rings especially true given the scenes of violence that have erupted in Dublin in recent days. Ireland’s police chief Drew Harris this weekend blamed the rioting and violence, which saw multiple people stabbed, on a “lunatic, hooligan faction driven by a far-right ideology...

Few American filmmakers of the last 40 years await a major rediscovery like Hal Hartley, whose traces in modern movies are either too-minor or entirely unknown. Thus it’s cause for celebration that the Criterion Channel are soon launching a major retrospective: 13 features (which constitutes all but My America) and 17 shorts, a sui generis style and persistent vision running across 30 years. Expect your Halloween party to be aswim in Henry Fool costumes.
Speaking of: there’s a one-month headstart on seasonal programming with the 13-film “High School Horror”––most notable perhaps being a streaming premiere for the uncut version of Suspiria, plus the rare opportunity to see a Robert Rodriguez movie on the Criterion Channel––and a retrospective of Hong Kong vampire movies. A retrospective of ’70s car movies offer chills and thrills of a different sort

We all know the old saying that hindsight is 20/20. When it comes to slasher films from the 1980s, movies that were released during that time were very often dismissed by critics – and rightfully so. Audiences, on the other hand, had a great time experiencing arguably the cinematic equivalent of riding a roller coaster. Following the success of John Carpenter’s Halloween in 1978 and its most closely related “holiday” second cousin, Sean Cunningham’s Friday the 13th in 1980, movie studios were falling over themselves to come up with the next big horror hit in much the same way that the spate of killer fish and outer space movies followed the success of Jaws in 1975 and Star Wars in 1977, respectively. Unfortunately, for us, often this resulted in some terribly silly and cookie cutter films that were nothing more than derivations of superior slasher films from years past.

While Halloween undoubtedly became a huge moment in her career in 1978, and rightfully so, it was in 1980 when the now-iconic actress Jamie Lee Curtis firmly established herself as a cinematic force to be reckoned with in the world of genre filmmaking. Not only did Curtis appear in three different horror projects that year, but she also hosted a hilarious episode of Saturday Night Live to boot, which showcased her versatility and quickly established as Curtis as one of the most exciting talents on the brink as Hollywood was heading into a brand new decade.
It was in February 1980 when John Carpenter’s The Fog was first released, which featured Curtis joining a star-studded ensemble that featured the likes of Hal Holbrook, Adrienne Barbeau, Tom Atkins, Nancy Loomis, Charles Cyphers, and even her own mother, Janet Leigh, as well. While it’s a standout amongst Carpenter’s stellar genre output in a myriad of ways,...

While the original Prom Night (directed by Paul Lynch) was released in 1980, it was filmed in 1979 and, as such, still retains some of that decade’s flavor. Since our last installment there has been an explosion of the obscure movies hitting Amazon Prime Video – available for streaming rather than purchase, though the wide variety of films you don’t, and probably won’t see elsewhere makes up for that. Top Ten Scream Queens: Barbara Steele, who both emitted screams and made others do same, is in a category of her own. Top Ten Scream Queens Halloween is over until next year, but the equally bewitching Day of the Dead is just around the corner. So, dead or alive, here's my revised and expanded list of cinema's Top Ten Scream Queens. This highly personal compilation is based on how memorable – as opposed to how loud or how frequent – were the screams. That's the key reason you won't find listed below actresses featured in gory slasher films. After all, the screams – and just about everything else in such movies – are as meaningless as their plots. You also won't find any screaming guys (i.e., Scream Kings) on the list below even though I've got absolutely nothing against guys who scream in horror, whether in movies or in life. There are...

The Bitter Ash
A rather precious thing happened in Montreal in the mid 1970s. Canadian cinema had been dominated by the National Film Board since its formation in 1940, and the generally-perceived character of Canadian film was all educational documentary, and not a lot of fun. Directors such as Claude Jutra, Don Owen, and Gilles Groulx struck off on their own to make the first Canadian new wave fiction films (A tout prendre [1963], Nobody Waved Goodbye, and Le chat dans le sac [both 1964] respectively), on the back of independents like Sydney J. Furie’s groundbreaking A Dangerous Age (1959) and Larry Kent’s student feature The Bitter Ash (1963), but for all their youthful, semi-bohemian trappings, these were still quite po-faced affairs. Then came the “genial loser” films of the 70s, led by Owen’s Goin’ Down The Road (1970), and others such as The Rowdyman (Peter Carter, 1972) and Paperback Hero (Peter Pearson, 1973), for the...

‘Starry Eyes’: The feel disturbed movie of the year
This film is at its very core a success story. A very demented, gory, horrifying and darkly comical success story – one with tinges of satanic cult horror wrapped in psychological terror. The series was hosted by James Coburn, who introduced each story segment as a photographer in his darkroom, developing photographs and tales. Most episodes contained two stories, but at times there were three.

It has been an extremely long time since I sat down to watch the classic “slasher” flick, Prom Night. So long, in fact, that I don’t think I even own a DVD version of the film. Synapse are about to remedy that problem, as they bring the classic home to Blu-ray for the first time ever. Synapse might not be quite as prolific as a company like Scream Factory, that pumps out multiple titles per month, but what they do release is A+ quality. They have shared several images throughout the restoration process, and based on that, I feel comfortable in saying that their Blu-ray release of this film will be something to behold. I’m excited, and you should be to. Check out the press release below, and make sure to pre-order a copy of your own from their website.

Just because we're busy in San Diego with Comic-Con, that doesn't mean we are not keeping a watchful eye on the news everywhere else. This latest bit coming in from the Synapse Films Facebook page actually has us pretty giddy!
From the page...
And so, today, I have another surprise (although many of you kind of figured this was coming based on yesterday's reveal of Curtains). The [Prom Night] negative is reportedly in poor condition, but we're diving in today after our lab has performed many hours of fixing splices and repairs... A Texas Chain Saw Massacre-like restoration may be in order to make this work, but Synapse is up to the task.
The sheer joy caused by the mere thought of seeing Jamie Lee Curtis performing her Dance Of Disco Fury™ in full 1080p is just staggering! Just too much for the mind to process! This chick's dance? This is Serious Business!

Horror films are a hot commodity. Some of the most well-known slasher films of the 1980’s have been re-issued on DVD and Blu-ray by companies looking to cash-in on audiences’ seemingly insatiable appetite for murder and mayhem while also introducing them to a whole new generation of fans with disposable income. Two titles that fans want on DVD and Blu-ray in the way of special editions are Paul Lynch’s Prom Night (1980) and Richard Ciupka’s Curtains (1983), both Canadian productions through Simcom, the former having fared far better on home video than the latter.
Prom Night was originally released theatrically by Avco Embassy Pictures in July 1980. It was distributed on VHS by McA Home Video in 1981 and again by Virgin Vision, Inc. in 1988. McA also released a laserdisc pan-and-scan version on their laser rot-prone DiscoVision line in 1981 (curiously, the film bypassed the RCA Select-a-Vision Capacitance Electronic Disc...

It's hard to believe that not every Eighties classic has made its way to DVD yet. How we long for a non-bootlegged copy of The Boogens, The Mutilator ... hell, we'd even settle for Spookies! Still, the fine folks over at Scorpion Releasing are scratching a Humongous one off of our want list in just a couple of weeks!
From the Press Release
On November 15th, Scorpion Releasing and Katarina's Nightmare Theater present Humongous. A group of teens on a boat find themselves in a fogbound night only to run aground on the rocks of the mysterious 'Dog Island' right before their boat goes up in flames. As they gather on the shoreline, one of them goes missing, another is critically injured and four go searching for shelter. They then decide to venture into the still standing house to summon help from its occupants...if any. Luckily, there is someone still dwelling there,...

Happy hardcore, jungle, garage – as 90s pirate radio cranked it out, Mike Finch soaked it up on thousands of cassette tapes. Dan Hancox marvels at a treasure trove that's truly massive
"It was the sound of London when I was doing my GCSEs," says 31-year-old Mike Finch. "I remember in 1994 and '95 you would walk down Oxford Street and the stalls there would all have jungle playing; that Congo Natty ragga sound. It was there in the air anyway, and all you needed was a little radio to tune in." In many ways, Finch is not unusual – a rave everyman who had his life changed for ever by the music of the pirate radio stations. What makes him different is that the legacy he carries with him is also a tangible one: Finch has what must be Britain's largest archive of 90s pirate radio tapes. It's a combination of thousands of home-recorded C90 cassettes,...

Jamie Lee Curtis launched her film career with the immortal 1978 horror classic Halloween, creating a heroine in Laurie Strode who would become the prototype for the ultimate scream queen. Subsequent roles in horror films like The Fog, Prom Night, Terror Train, Roadgames and Halloween II - all of which are genre classics - would cement Curtis' status as cinema's undisputed scream queen, a title she holds to this day...
I want to personally offer an apology to author David Grove for just now finishing this terrific biography on the one and only Jamie Lee Curtis. It wasn't easy to fit in such a comprehensive novel into day to day life especially when you're constantly reporting on the world of horror but once you pick this up, you can't set it back down. We normally have a book reviewer to handle this very task but to be frankly honest I wanted to read this book.

Going To Pieces - Fangoria Archives: Originally Published 10/2006
When a documentary tackles a subject as specific, and with such specific appeal, as slasher films, the challenge lies in conveying that attraction to the unconverted while not simply feeding the fans a buffet they’ve already fully sampled. The Starz original Going To Pieces: The Rise And Fall Of The Slasher Film is more successful in offering devotees a gorenucopia of clips and talking heads (still attached to bodies) recounting the subgenre’s history than it likely will be in convincing non-fans that this grisly strain of cinema is a worthy one.
The hour-and-a-half show is based on Adam Rockoff’s book of the same title, which stands as the single best study of stalker cinema ever published.
