"The Amityville Horror" is one of the definitive haunted house films, a classic tale about paranormal activity terrorizing a suburban family with swarming flies, mysterious voices, and sudden illness. Even the windows resemble ominous eyes peering down on the unsuspecting victims. The movie taps into the religious undertones popularized by other 1970s releases such as "The Exorcist" and "The Omen," suggesting there is a Satanic force at work that must be destroyed.
Eventually, the new owners George and Kathy Lutz discover the horrifying history of their new home: Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered his entire family with a rifle one year prior, a Satanic worshipper named John Ketchum once lived on the land, and the house itself was built on a Shinnecock burial ground.
Despite receiving mixed reviews for elements like the cheesy portrayal of a possessed George, "The Amityville Horror" ended up having a significant impact on the horror genre.

From Jeffrey Dahmer’s history of murder to the tragic death of Ronald DeFeo Jr., The Exorcist horror franchise has been addressed several times in practically all of these crime stories. According to some, The Exorcist responds erratically in their brains, especially those who infamously grew up to be murderers and serial killers, suggesting that the film served as inspiration for their crimes. The third episode of Amityville: An Origin Story also discusses these cursed movie franchises, like The Exorcist. Previously, issues about the veracity of George and Kathy Lutz’s story had been raised, but in this episode, we got a wide overview of both of these possibilities, whether it may all be a fraud or whether the Lutzes were indeed victims of such horrible occurrences. Let’s see what we can conclude at the end of the episode.

In the history of homicide and paranormal activity, the Amityville Horror is one of the most scary and gut-wrenching disasters of all time. The four-part MGM+ documentary series Amityville: An Origin Story is a fascinating documentary that revisits the actual account of events that occurred in the haunted mansion of Amityville. The series includes archive material from the 1970s as well as brand-new interviews with those who witnessed the tragedy firsthand. Several books, film franchises, fan fiction, and other media have previously captured the retelling of these terrifying occurrences, the most famous of which is 1979’s The Amityville Horror, which almost everyone is familiar with. Well, listening to real-life victims of those traumatic events is considerably more spine-chilling than the fictional version. Despite being a documentary, Amityville: An Origin Story masterfully depicted that horror for us. Let’s go into the specifics of what transpired at the Amityville residence.

Plot: A four-part docuseries digs into the troubling true stories behind The Amityville Horror.
Review: The Amityville brand has gone completely out of control in recent years. Low budget filmmakers have been taking advantage of the fact that anyone can slap “Amityville” into the title of their movie, flooding the market with titles like Amityville in the Hood, Amityville in Space, Amityville Karen, Amityville Cop, Amityville Vampire, Amityville Shark House, and The Amityville Vibrator. I’m not saying these movies are bad. I haven’t seen them. But it’s clear that the Amityville name has drifted far away from the stories that made us take notice of that name in the first place. So even though we’ve heard the story of George and Kathy Lutz moving into a haunted house and we know the DeFeo family was murdered in that house, it was a smart idea on the part of MGM,...

At this point, the Amityville “universe” of films is something of a running joke in horror circles. It is borderline ridiculous that there’s so many entries (for those who are curious: 2022 has seen the release of no less than 10 new films!). As Paste editor Jacob Oller explains in his piece “Why Are There So Many Absurd Amityville Horror Movies?”, there appear to be two main reasons why there are so many movies with Amityville in the title.
After the Lutzs lost their suit against The Possession and 3-D producer Dino De Laurentiis, Amityville titles became open season so long as they didn’t skew too closely to the real-life story. As Oller explains: “The nuttier the twist, the less worried anyone has to be about getting sued.

Despite what popular perception might be, a lot of horror fans watch scary movies to get away from life’s harsh realities. So in a way, basing a horror on something that actually happened defeats the point. But the fact is it’s all in the telling. We’ve been quite strict about not including things that were just loosely inspired by a real event, with the majority of the story a fiction. So no Psycho or Texas Chain Saw Massacre (both inspired by Ed Gein) and no The Exorcist (the book was inspired by a real boy) etc.
Without further ado, here are our favourite horrors based on real events.
Dead Ringers (1988)
Arguably the last flat-out masterpiece of David Cronenberg’s exceptional mid-1970s/late-1980s run of films, Dead Ringers also marked a transitional moment for the filmmaker as he ventured beyond the visceral body horror he was...

1979's "The Amityville Horror" still sits atop many critics' lists of scariest movies of all time. From the opening choral notes of Lalo Schifrin's compositions (which earned him an Oscar nomination), it's clear that something wicked lies in the spacious Dutch colonial at 112 Ocean Avenue, once the DeFeo home before the Lutz family moves in. It's a house with bad residue after Ronald DeFeo, Jr. slays his entire family with a rifle in the early hours of November 13, 1974. A year passes before George and Kathy Lutz (James Brolin and Margot Kidder) move into the house with their three young children; the clan lasts 28...

It is perhaps the most famous haunted house in American history: 112 Ocean Avenue, a Dutch Colonial house situated in Amityville, Long Island. In 1974, a young man named Ronald DeFeo Jr. shot and killed six members of his family. A year later, George and Kathy Lutz and their three children moved into the house -- only to flee after 28 days, claiming the house was haunted. The story first inspired a book and then a movie, both called "The Amityville Horror." And this was no mere ghost story, oh no – it was billed as being a true ghost story. But how true is it? Just what actually happened in that...

Having directed Crystal Lake Memories: The Complete History of Friday the 13th and Scream: The Inside Story, as well as co-directing Never Sleep Again: The Elm Street Legacy, filmmaker Daniel Farrands is no stranger to extensively researching some of the horror genre's most beloved titles. For his latest film, The Amityville Murders, Farrands explores the real-life horror story of what happened to the DeFeo family in the house on 112 Ocean Avenue, and with the movie coming to theaters, On Demand, and Digital on February 8th, we caught up with the filmmaker for our latest Q&A to discuss diving into the relationships of the DeFeo family, remembering the DeFeos as real people, creating the film's ’70s aesthetic, casting two actors from Amityville II: The Possession, and he also discussed working with Hilary Duff and Jonathan Bennett on his next movie, The Haunting of Sharon Tate.

Margot Kidder, who is probably best known for portraying Lois Lane opposite Christopher Reeve in the 1970s and ’80s Superman movies and starred in many other films including The Amityville Horror while struggling with mental illness, has died. Kidder appeared with many of Hollywood’s leading men during her 50-year career, including Robert Redford and James Garner, it was her role as the plucky Daily Planet reporter with a penchant for finding trouble in Superman (1978), Superman II (1980), Superman III (1983) and Superman IV (1987) that shot her to fame.

Last week, I gave you guys a few lists from Amazon and Netflix in regards to what they have to offer via their streaming services this fall. As a newbie to Hulu, I only discovered over the weekend that they, too, beyond just being an amazing resource for television programming, offer up a killer selection of genre movies that are free to stream with a standard Hulu membership.
Here’s a look at an assortment of 31 films from Hulu that I think would be great movies to stream this October. I tried to give you guys a wide variety, too, hitting various sub-genres, so hopefully there’s a little bit of something for everyone in this list.

Full disclosure: The Amityville Horror films do not make up my favorite franchise. And it has nothing to do with the central “haunted house” premise, but rather the execution of the series thus far, from the serviceable ground zero template, The Amityville Horror (1979) through the (as yet unseen) upcoming Amityville: The Awakening, with some stops in between at DTVville (not to mention the Ryan Reynolds remake; but I said not to mention, so not mention I shall). The name is so shopworn now that “Amityville” has become synonymous with “poopy”.
But, but, But…let’s rewind to a time when a follow up to the kind-of goofy James Brolin (and his glorious perm) starrer was actually anticipated. That film was a smash success at the box office, and the powers that be wanted to revisit the village of Amityville to see what other demons they could find in the basement.

A waterfront home on Long Island boasts a formal dining room, a heated sun room and a large boat house - and a history so terrifying that it inspired a book and horror films. Owner Caroline D'Antonio has listed the five-bedroom, four-bathroom 1927 Dutch Colonial - better known as The "Amityville Horror House" - for $850,000. D'Antonio and her husband, David, who died last year, purchased the otherwise charming house in 2010 for $950,000. In 1974, the home became the scene of six grisly murders when 23-year-old Ronald DeFeo, Jr. shot and killed his parents and his four siblings as they slept in their beds.

Sarah looks back at the Amityville films, and finds a lot of scary things, not all of which were intentional…
112 Ocean Avenue, Long Island is probably the most famous haunted house in the world. Not that you’ll necessarily recognise the address – it’s far better known as the Amityville Horror house. Back in 1975, George and Kathy Lutz moved their family into the house… and then 28 days later, they moved back out, claiming to have been driven out by supernatural forces. Their story made the news, was turned into a book, and then made into a movie, in 1979.
It’s hard to imagine now that a family claiming to have encountered the devil in their basement could cause such a massive fuss, but I’m not here to interrogate the truth of their statement. What I am here to do, though, is to watch all of the Amityville Horror movies made to date,...

The funny thing about a really powerful supernatural movie, at least those that get wide theatrical releases, is they usually transcend the theater and become the talk of the nation for a while. And many of them even hang around our psyches for years and years to come.
We'll begin, as always, with our honorable mentions, and you'll see that many of them also took the country by storm. Low budget, found footage movies like Paranormal Activity and The Blair Witch Project were absolutely larger than life during their theatrical releases.
However, bigger films can also reach out and grab you. Poltergeist...

Just $955,000! Um... Zak Bagans... are you listening?!?!?
The 10-room, Colonial-style building was used for exteriors in the 1979 film.
The "real" Amityville house at 112 Ocean Avenue was made famous on November 13, 1974, after police discovered six members of the DeFeo family – father, mother, and four of their five children – all shot and killed execution style.
In December of 1975, George and Kathy Lutz and Kathy’s three children then moved into the large Dutch Colonial style house. After just 28 days the Lutzes left, claiming to have been terrorized by paranormal phenomena while living there. The Lutzes' reports of strange and horrific experiences was the basis of the book and film.

In case you haven’t heard, Dimension Films and Blumhouse Productions are teaming up to reboot the Amityville Horror franchise. Aptly titled Amityville, the film now has a director and two stars in the form of Maniac helmer Franck Khalfoun and actresses Jennifer Jason Leigh and Bella Thorne.
According to Bloody Disgusting, Leigh will be playing a single mom with three children. When the family moves into the infamous Amityville house, they learn of its dark history and from there, the terror ensues. It sounds pretty generic and basically identical to every other film in the franchise, but hopefully the producers can do something fresh with it. Originally, the plan was to go the found footage route. Thankfully, that idea has been scrapped.
As the twelfth film in the Amityville franchise, I can’t say that I’m too excited for this entry. Sure, Khalfoun’s Maniac was quite impressive,...

We frequently disagree with mainstream critics on their critiques of horror films. It seems as though the majority of entertainment journalists are not able to accept horror films for what they are intended to do: scare the audience and entertain. Not every horror film is meant to be taken seriously or to make a profound statement and we think that’s ok.
We are left wondering if mainstream film critics dismiss horror films as a lesser art form and perhaps tend to view them as not worth their time. In light of that, FEARnet has been running a recurring a piece exploring good horror movies that received ‘rotten’ reviews on the aggregate film rating site Rotten Tomatoes. Since the series has proved popular, we are bringing you a third installment.

★★★★☆ The Amityville Horror (1979) and its 2005 remake focused on the supposedly true story of a supernatural attack upon one American family in the mid-70s. After moving into a former murder site at 112 Ocean Avenue, the Lutz family suffered a series of inexplicable and terrifying events. Until their recent deaths, George and Kathy Lutz remained adamant that their claims were 100% factual. In...

For most people, “The Amityville Horror” was just a movie, but for Daniel Lutz, who lived at the infamous house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, New York, it was real life. In 1975, when Daniel was 10, his family lived there for just 28 days before fleeing in terror, the victims of widespread supernatural happenings that pushed them to the brink of madness and had them fearing for their lives. A media circus began that never fully ended.
Up until their recent deaths, his parents George and Kathy Lutz, never went back on a single claim. In the 35 years since the ordeal, Daniel has never spoken on the record about his experiences. This is his story, in his words. For the first time in 35 years, child eyewitness Daniel Lutz recounts his version of the infamous Amityville haunting that terrified his family in...

Before we got started, Eric Walter made it clear that he was a huge Famous Monsters fan, that he’s been one ever since he was a kid, and his dad collected the magazine. Perhaps he still does. Now, he’s come full circle, talking with us about his first feature film, a documentary entitled My Amityville Horror, that delves into the infamous hauntings that took place at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville, NY that tore the Lutz family apart and made them household names for decades, as the specter of what did or didn’t happen loomed over the rest of their lives, including one Daniel Lutz,...

To watch The Amityville Horror and be terrified is one thing, but what about hearing the actual ghost story that inspired Jay Anson’s original book? Yes, the movie is all based on stories recalled by the Lutz family while living in one of the most fabled houses in Long Island history, although there’s much controversy over the actual details – and that’s where documentary filmmaker Eric Walter comes in with his brand new film My Amityville Horror. Yup, this young truth-seeker was able to have George and Kathy Lutz’s son Daniel open up about the experiences he had in the house, unleashing all the horrifying details in an attempt to let viewers decide what to believe.
Being the horror nerd I am, there’s no way a chance to speak with Walter about his experience was slipping by me. Check out my exclusive interview with Eric as...

For a lot of horror fans, watching a film based on a true story makes their viewing experience all the more jarring. And really, we can’t argue with that. Taking in a reimagining of something that actually transpired is inherently more frightening than a film that isn’t grounded in reality. With that said, we’ve put together a guide to what we hold to be the ten most shocking films based on or inspired by actual events. We’ve ranked the films according to how shocking the movie is, how shocking the actual events are, and how closely the film follows the events it was based upon or inspired by.
#10 The Strangers

In 1975, George and Kathy Lutz (along with Kathy's three children from a previous marriage), moved into a huge house in Amityville, a tiny Long Island suburb. In less than a month, the family would abandon their possessions and leave the house, later claiming it had been the source of a number of supernatural disturbances – including the appearance of a floating, wolf-headed pig; demonic possession; and swarms of ghostly black flies. (The events were immortalized in a supposedly nonfiction book by Jan Anson that has been adapted a number of times for the big screen.) In "My Amityville Horror," Daniel Lutz, Kathy's oldest boy (he legally changed his name when George married his mom), talks, for the first time, openly and at length about what he experienced in that house. The results are a disturbing mixture of paranormal ghost story and psychological unease. The film begins with Daniel Lutz sitting at a table,...

Even if you’re not a fan of the genre, you probably at least recognize the name Amityville and associate it with horror.
Published in 1977, "The Amityville Horror" by Jay Anson took the country by storm. The story of the Lutzes demonic experiences in their Long Island home has had a huge cultural impact, spawning a storm of media frenzy, paranormal investigations, legal controversy, and a series of horror movies that span from 1979 to current day and now Eric Walter has finally got Danny Lutz to tell his side of the story.
Just a brief history lesson for any who didn’t know (and let’s not forget, this is non-fiction): The house located at 112 Ocean Avenue in suburban Amityville was the site of a grisly murder spree. Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered all six members of his immediate family in one evening, while they were sleeping, shooting them face down in their beds.

Written/directed by: Eric Walter
Featuring: Daniel Lutz, Laura Didio
Survival is a common theme in horror films. The notion of outwitting the bad guy in any given film is the motor of a standard plot. But what if the events in question are supposedly real and someone who lived through it decides to come forward and give their side of the story decades later? The audience would be expecting something groundbreaking and chilling. Unfortunately, in the case of director Eric Walter's My Amityville Horror, the titular story comes off as a tepid and unsubstantial vision of something that is potentially much darker.
The storyteller for the majority of the film is Daniel Lutz, Kathy Lutz's oldest son and the adopted child of George Lutz. He maintains throughout the film that he must tell this story as he lived it, but he is also terrified to do so.

No doubt if you're a fan of the horror genre and in particular interested in true crime history, then you've at some point been fascinated by the "true story" surrounding 'The Amityville Horror.' Hell, that's the reason Hollywood has managed to churn out up to 7 sequels in the franchise, and that doesn't even include the Platinum Dunes remake, the Asylum knock off 'The Amityville Haunting' or the several documentaries on the subject like those excellent History Channel specials. However, you haven't heard the whole story quite yet.
Below you'll find the trailer for IFC Midnight's new documentary from filmmaker Eric Walter 'My Amityville Horror.' For the first time in 35 years, Daniel Lutz recounts his version of the infamous Amityville haunting that terrified his family in 1975. George and Kathy Lutz's story went on to inspire a best-selling novel and the subsequent films have continued to fascinate audiences today.
