Apple TV+ has unveiled the trailer for the second season of ‘The Big Door Prize,’ the critically acclaimed and character-driven comedy from Emmy Award-winning creator David West Read (“Schitt’s Creek”).
Based on M.O. Walsh’s novel, season two follows the residents of Deerfield as the Morpho machine readies them for the mysterious “next stage.” As everyone’s potentials are exchanged for visions, new relationships form and new questions are asked.
Dusty (Chris O’Dowd) and Cass (Gabrielle Dennis) decide to take time apart while Trina (Djouliet Amara) and Jacob (Sammy Fourlas) learn that they can shed their old labels. Giorgio (Josh Segarra) and Izzy (Crystal Fox) each find romance while Hana (Ally Maki) and Father Reuben (Damon Gupton) attempt to discover the purpose of the machine. The small town is once again left questioning what they thought they knew about their lives, relationships, potentials and about the Morpho itself.

Christopher Nolan has won the feature-film prize from the Directors Guild of America for “Oppenheimer,” reinforcing his film’s status as the heavy favorite this awards season. The honor went to Nolan at the end of the 76th annual DGA Awards, which took place on Saturday night in Beverly Hills.
In the other film categories, Celine Song won the award for first-time directing for her gentle drama “Past Lives” and Mstyslav Chernov won the documentary award for “20 Days in Mariupol,” his on-the-ground report from the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Peter Hoar won the drama-series award for “The Last of Us,” in a category in which the other four nominees were all from different episodes of “Succession.”

The 76th Directors Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. Pt with Judd Apatow hosting the in-person, non-televised ceremony. These kudos honored the best helmers of the year in movies and television, as voted on by more than 18,000 members of the directing guild. Scroll down for the 2024 DGA Awards winners list in three film and eight TV categories.
As always, the all-important feature film category is one of the most telling bellwethers for the eventual Best Director Oscar. The guild and the academy have only disagreed for Best Director eight times over the past seven decades, with the last three years lining up perfectly for Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Jane Campion (2021’s “The Power of the Dog”) and Chloé Zhao (2020’s “Nomadland”).

Directors may call the shots on set, but in TV, they are just one piece of a well-oiled machine. For every auteur who writes and directs every episode of a show, there are hundreds of episodic directors who come in and out of shows, adapting to the series’ tones and looks, and collaborating with dozens of people. And that’s precisely what our Directors Guild of America Awards TV nominees panelists love about TV.
“I never saw myself as an auteur particularly, and so in episodic TV, that’s one thing you certainly don’t need or maybe don’t want to have because there’s not a whole lot of room for it. I think in episodic TV, as well as making your episode as amazing as it is and as best it can be, there’s a huge amount of fitting in and working with the parameters of...

Declan Lowney directed the last two episodes of “Ted Lasso’s” third and final (for now) season, but that wasn’t the original plan. Lowney, who won an Emmy in 2022 as a producer on the show, was slated to helm the opening block of Season 3 until various delays and scheduling conflicts with another project caused him to drop out for what he thought was for good.
“It was a bit of a happy accident,” Lowney tells Gold Derby during our Directors Guild of America Awards TV nominees panel (watch the exclusive video interview above). “Just before they were due to start prep on the first two episodes, the whole shoot got pushed a month. They weren’t quite ready. I had a clash with another job I already had, ‘The Big Door Prize,’ the other Apple show. So I had to pull out. I was contracted to the other show.

After scoring big at such recent award shows as the Golden Globes and the Critics’ Choice Awards, FX’s The Bear has continued down the path of awards glory, claiming six statuettes at the 2023 Primetime Emmys.
At the ceremony, held at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Monday night, the beloved Chicago restaurant-world comedy scored the prizes for Outstanding Comedy Series, Comedy Actor (Jeremy Allen White), Comedy Supporting Actress (Ayo Edebiri) and Comedy Supporting Actor (Ebon Moss-Bachrach), as well as the awards for Comedy Writing and Directing. With creator Christopher Storer, the recipient of the latter two awards, absent from tonight’s ceremony, EP-actor (and real-world chef) Matty Matheson stepped up to accept the Comedy Series prize on behalf of the team.
“What’s good? I just want to thank restaurants as a whole, hospitality as a whole,” said Matheson, before being kissed passionately on the mouth by excited co-star Moss-Bachrach.

Because the Primetime Emmys and the DGA Awards are operating on two different schedules, nominations often have little overlap. However, with the Director Guild of America (DGA) coincidentally releasing the TV nominations for its DGA Awards the same week as the postponed 75th Primetime Emmys, it’s become even more noticeable the ways in which the two awards bodies aligned and differed on shows from 2023.
For instance, DGA Awards favorite “Succession” once again dominates the Drama Series category, receiving four nominations (one less than the last time the show was eligible). While the guild was on the same page about honoring directors Andrij Parekh and Mark Mylod (a past winner) for their work on the fourth and final season of the HBO awards juggernaut, DGA voters opted to recognize Becky Martin and duo Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman for their “Succession” Season 4 episodes over Lorene Scafaria, the show’s...

The Directors Guild of America announced the nominees for television, commercials and documentary for its 76th annual DGA Awards today, a list headed by three-time winner Bill Hader and installments of the third and final season of HBO’s “Succession,” which claimed four of the five Drama Series nomination slots – the fifth going to an episode of fellow HBO hour “The Last of Us.”
The Comedy Series nomination lineup features the directors of a pair of episodes of Apple TV+’s “Ted Lasso” along with two installments of FX’s “The Bear” (including a repeat nomination for showrunner Christopher Storer – the acclaimed “Fishes” edition from Season 2 of the series – and a first for comedian and actor Ramy Youssef).

The Apple TV+ limited series “Lessons in Chemistry” also scored multiple bids in the Movies For Television/Limited Series category with three.

“Ted Lasso” is on track to win its third Emmy in a row for Best Comedy Series, per Gold Derby’s racetrack odds. Apple TV Plus’ feel-good show topped all other laffers this year with a whopping 21 Emmy nominations (see below), just one shy of the comedy record set by “30 Rock” in 2009. Fun fact: if “Ted Lasso” goes on to win trophy #3 this September, it’d be only the seventh comedy in Emmy history to prevail for its first three seasons on the air.
The most recent time this rare feat occurred was for “Modern Family,” which actually won five times consecutively (2010-14). Before that was “30 Rock” (first three seasons in 2007-09), “Frasier” (first five seasons in 1994-98), “Taxi” (first three seasons in 1979-81), “All in the Family” and “The Phil Silvers Show” (first three seasons in 1956-58).

“Ted Lasso” ended its three-season run amid multiple Emmy wins and critical acclaim, leaving fans hungry for more.
Series director Declan Lowney recently spoke with Awards Radar about the possibility fans might see further series spun from the world of “Ted Lasso”.
“Jason [Sudekis] always said it was three seasons, he’s wrapped everybody’s stories up very nicely,” Lowney explained. “But there’s a whole bunch of things aren’t there that have been set up in the last montage in the last few minutes that are potential spin-offs.”
In fact, Lowney revealed that he has ideas for four potential “Ted Lasso” spin-offs that could continue the storylines of various characters from the series.

There wasn’t a dry eye in the house among the full cast and crew on the last day of filming Ted Lasso‘s season three. The shot was in the fictional Richmond Fc locker room before its championship game against rival West Ham — and before beloved coach Ted Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis (who’s nominated for lead actor and writing in addition to comedy series), was scheduled to return to the U.S. Instead of his usual pep talk, Lasso introduces a video, looking back at the team’s growth. “The tears are real,” says Declan Lowney, who directed this episode and eight others during the three seasons of the 11-time Emmy-winning Apple TV+ series. (Its 10 noms this year include nods to most of the talent mentioned in this story.) Famously based on a 2013 NBC Sports promo, Sudeikis’ depiction of an American college football coach who moves to...

Wednesday night at a joint Apple TV+/Gold Derby FYC event, “Ted Lasso’s” top artisans celebrated their 2023 Emmy nominations at the American Society of Cinematographers Clubhouse in Hollywood, CA. Emmy voters in attendance had a blast answering questions at “Ted Lasso Trivia Night” as they dined on short ribs, salmon, potatoes and fresh veggies and imbibed the “Ted Lasso”-inspired Pimm’s Cup alcoholic drinks. For dessert? Chocolate-covered strawberries and yummy cheesecake. The party-goers also re-watched the Season 3 finale, titled “So Long, Farewell.”
Current and former “Ted Lasso” Emmy nominees who rubbed elbows with TV academy members were: director Declan Lowney, editor A.J. Catoline, additional editor Alex Szabo, additional editor Francesca Castro, music editor Richard David Brown, supervising sound editor Brent Findley, and re-recording mixer Ryan Kennedy.

Apple TV+’s feel-good comedy series “Ted Lasso” wrapped up its third (and likely final) season in May and was promptly rewarded with a whopping 21 Emmy nominations. Gold Derby chatted with many of this year’s nominees, including supporting actor Phil Dunster, supporting actress Juno Temple and guest actress Harriet Walter. Scroll down to watch our 11 exclusive in-depth video interviews with top Emmy contenders.
Dunster earned his long-awaited first Emmy bid for playing fan-fave footballer Jamie Tartt. His co-star Brett Goldstein (as Roy Kent) has won Best Comedy Supporting Actor two years in a row, and is now recognized for a third time in the category. Dunster’s Emmy episode submission is “Mom City.”

Oi! As it turns out, fans of Ted Lasso are going to find their patience going into overtime, as series director Declan Lowney has confirmed that it’s going to be some time before anything moves forward with the show – if it does at all.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Lowney – who directed eight episodes throughout Ted Lasso’s three seasons, including the finale – said that the third season could be the end, which is why so many storylines were in there. “Everybody knew it was the end, but it’s also the end for now. (Laughs.) It’s going to be two or three years before anything happens — if anything happens — so let’s try and tie up all these stories properly.” Still, he recognizes the fanbase and how much could still be told, even if it might put the Ted Lasso cast and crew through a lot. “If...

Ted Lasso’s third season ended with a sense of finality — the May 31 finale was even titled “So Long, Farewell.” But Apple TV+ hasn’t specified whether that installment the ending or an ending for the Emmy-winning football comedy. And Declan Lowney, who directed Season 3’s last episode and seven others in the series, suggests in a new interview that there might be more to come. “Everybody knew it was the end, but it’s also the end for now,” Lowney tells The Hollywood Reporter with a laugh, reflecting on filming the finale. “It’s going to be two or three years before anything happens — if anything happens — so let’s try and tie up all these stories properly.” Kevin Winter/Getty Images Lowney, who earned an Emmy nomination for helming that Season 3 capper, says the first “So Long, Farewell” pages he got from star/writer/co-creator Jason Sudeikis didn...

The most recent and probably final season of Apple TV+’s Emmy-winning comedy Ted Lasso was a bittersweet endeavor for director Declan Lowney, who had worked on the series since season one as both a director (in each of its three seasons) and as a supervising producer (in season two, for which he won an Emmy for best comedy series). The Irish director says that the American production, which films in the actual town of Richmond, England, is much larger in scale and scope than other U.K. productions, even amid the streaming age, and with that came as many challenges as there were benefits — although he concedes that a bigger production budget was certainly a plus.
But he admits there were giant stakes for him this go-round, particularly because he was responsible for helming the final two episodes. (He earned his second directing Emmy nom for the finale.) He...

“A lot of what we do as directors is just putting out fires,” said “Ted Lasso” director Declan Lowney. Whether those are unavoidable or self-made fires, the directors at Variety’s Creative Collaborations: Directors on Directors panel all agreed that their shows and films faced serious challenges — but that didn’t stop their projects from earning Emmy nominations.
Directors Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton of “Fleishman is in Trouble,” Peter Hoar of “The Last of Us,” Lowney of “Ted Lasso,” Glenn Weiss of “The Oscars” and Davis Guggenheim of “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie” joined Variety’s senior artisans editor Jazz Tangcay for a conversation about their recent projects and the unexpected complications that came with them.
Preparing for a live show as big as the Oscars takes serious planning, starting as early as the day nominations come out and running all the way up to the final week before the show.

These directors, who have never won an Emmy, may finally get a chance at a nomination and perhaps a win with these buzzy series.
Karyn Kusama
It’s been 20 years since Kusama made her directorial debut, but she’s yet to receive an Emmy nomination. The “Jennifer’s Body” director stepped behind the camera for the pilot episode of this year’s breakout drama “Yellowjackets” on Showtime.
Lorene Scafaria
Best known for writing and directing 2019’s “Hustlers,” Scafaria helmed the seventh episode of the latest season of HBO’s massive hit, “Succession.” Titled “Too Much Birthday,” the heart-wrenching episode, which centered on Kendall’s lavish 40th birthday party, could — and should — also get recognition for production design done by Stephen H. Carter.

Goldberg, an Emmy nominee for season two of Barry, and Susan Stanley have scored a green light at IFC for a dark comedy series titled Sisters. The two, long-time friends former classmates at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts, will star in and write the six-episode series. They’ll play women from Canada and Ireland who discover they’re half sisters and set out on a road trip to find their alcoholic father. The series will air on the IFC cable channel and stream on Sundance Now.
“We are thrilled to be making Sisters, a character-driven comedic drama about how the absence of a parent in childhood can affect life in your thirties, and the macabre humour that can come with trauma,” Goldberg and Stanley said in a statement.

Kroeger confirmed that the team is back shooting in London, then the group teased a little bit about what people should expect from the new season. “I think it’s just more of what everyone loves and what has worked, and just going deeper into the characters,” Katzer said. “It’s deeper into the backstories,” Kroeger added, “we’re going to get a little more information about where they came from.”
Producer Declan Lowney then chimed in “there’s bound to be a bunch of surprises, things you didn’t see coming, some curveballs in there.” Are there curveballs in soccer? Well, I guess there are now.

From football (the actual footie kind) to monarchy to Michaela Coel, it was a great night to be British at the 2021 Emmy Awards.
Netflix had the biggest night of any streamer or network, with its Queen Elizabeth drama The Crown running a clean sweep of its categories and taking home seven awards. On the comedy side of things, Ted Lasso was nearly as dominant, winning nearly every award it was up for save for writing, directing, and lead actress in a comedy series (all three of which went to HBO Max’s Hacks). Mare of Easttown, I May Destroy You, and The Queen’s Gambit all split the limited series honors, with the Netflix chess series taking home the big prize.
It was a quiet ceremony for Marvel Studios, which was making its Primetime Emmy awards debut thanks to Disney+’s WandaVision. Though the series didn’t win any hardware Sunday night,...

One of the non-“Schitt’s Creek” losses that “Ted Lasso” suffered during the winter awards was at the Directors Guild of America Awards. The Apple TV+ hit lost the comedy series prize to “The Flight Attendant.” Will history repeat at the Emmys?
There are lots of similarities between the DGA race and the Emmy one. At DGA, two “Ted” episodes were nominated — “Biscuits” and “The Hope That Kills You — alongside “The Flight Attendant’s” pilot, “In Case of Emergency,” and two “Curb Your Enthusiasm” episodes, “The Surprise Party” and “The Spite Store.” That’s right, there was a double vote-split, paving the way for a “Flight Attendant” victory.
“Curb” is not Emmy-eligible, but the other three DGA nominees are up for the Emmy, along with a third “Ted” episode, “Make Rebecca Great Again.” At the moment, “In Case of Emergency,” directed by Susanna Fogel, is first in the odds, with “Bicuits,...

“Ted Lasso” cleaned up in the Emmy nominations when they were announced on July 13. It received 20 nominations, more than any other freshman comedy in history. Among those was for Zach Braff, who’s up for Best Comedy Directing for the episode “Biscuits.” This marks his first Emmy nomination since “Scrubs.” Can he win for his work behind the camera?
“Scrubs” never really got its due from the TV academy. Over the course of nine seasons it only won two Emmys, for picture editing in 2005 and sound mixing in 2007. It was only nominated for Best Comedy Series twice (2005-2006), and the second time that was its only nomination. 2005 was also the only year Braff was nominated for Best Comedy Actor for his performance as medical intern John Dorian.

If it wasn’t already clear that Steve Coogan is an extraordinarily multi-talented man, along came “Philomena.” Perhaps known best as a comic actor in films like “In The Loop,” “The Trip” and “24 Hour Party People,” Coogan took a turn for the dramatic with “Philomena,” both in front of and behind the camera. As producer, writer and star, Coogan helped deliver one of the year’s most heartwarming — and heartbreaking — dramas, detailing the true story of a woman (Judi Dench) who is joined by a journalist (Coogan) to try to find the son who was taken from her 50 years earlier.
A story that easily could have been turned into an overly sentimental tearjerker is handled with a confidence and restraint in both Coogan’s words and performance, resulting in a film that has been winning over audiences and awards groups left and right.

Since the medium’s infancy, viewers have enjoyed sharing holidays with their favourite television characters. We grow invested in our friends on screen over the years; spending Christmas with them is a rite of passage, a chance for us to share tradition from our world with the fictional ones we see on screen. Some shows embrace the season wholeheartedly, characters in good spirits and enjoying the trappings of the season; others skew a little darker, bringing the more oppressive, burdensome side of the holidays to life. Either way, Christmas episodes tend to demonstrate the strengths of our favourite series, and it’s long been a festive ritual of mine to wheel out old...

Christine Langan talks challenges, highlights and diversity as film arm celebrates 25th anniversary.
BBC Films boss Christine Langan has said that the lack of diversity within the film industry is “increasingly on BBC Films’ agenda”.
Speaking to ScreenDaily on the day BBC Films celebrated its 25th anniversary and revealed its upcoming film slate, Langan said that diversity increasingly plays a role in the division’s commissioning strategy.
“I can ensure you we are very mindful of it [diversity] and increasingly it is on our agenda. We need to reflect modern Britain and I am engaged in that process,” said Langan.
“The film community needs to create opportunities to pull people through. Commissioning has taken account of it and will continue to do so.”
While the announced slate is short on producers, writers and directors from ethnic minority backgrounds, Langan commented: “This isn’t the whole slate. There are quite a lot of new commissions that speak to that...
