There have been countless films about people struggling with drugs and alcohol, but there have not been many that have used magic to tell the story. Shane Brady has partnered with Rustic Films for his highly impressive directorial debut, Breathing Happy, which had its World Premiere at this year’s virtual Chattanooga Film Festival. Written, directed, and edited by Brady, Breathing Happy is a weird, wonderful, highly satisfying journey through grief, addiction, and recovery.
Featuring a ton of easter eggs and the disembodied voices of people like Aaron Moorhead and Dave Lawson, Jr., Breathing Happy follows a man named Dylan, played fantastically by Brady, who is grappling with sobriety on Christmas. Dylan, a recovering drug addict, is about to celebrate being one year sober, but his attempt at dealing with the loss of his family and his dog, seems to be getting in the way of his success. Dylan’s...

Though there's still plenty of evil to vanquish, Daimon and Ana are out of work. Hulu has cancelled the Helstrom TV series so, there won't be a second season of the fantasy horror series.
Based on Marvel Comics characters, the Helstrom TV show stars Tom Austen, Sydney Lemmon, Elizabeth Marvel, Robert Wisdom, Ariana Guerra, June Carryl, and Alain Uy. In the story, Daimon (Austen) and Ana Helstrom (Lemmon) are the offspring of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. Working together, with a complicated dynamic, they track down the worst of humanity — each with their own attitude and skills.

Helstrom will not be raising hell at Hulu again.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Marvel drama has been canceled after a single season.
The news means that Marvel's live-action TV series are now exclusively airing on Disney+, and all are now set in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.
News of the cancellation is not that surprising.
Hulu previously cut ties on Runaways after three seasons, and nixed the Ghost Rider TV series, which was set to be a part of the same universe as Helstrom.
Tom Austen, Sydney Lemmon, Elizabeth Marvel, Robert Wisdom, June Carryl, Ariana Guerra, and Alain Uy starred on the series, which was touted as Marvel's first foray into the world of terror.

Hulu is now out of live-action Marvel series, canceling “Helstrom” after just one season.
The cancelation now leaves the upcoming animated show “M.O.D.O.K.” with Patton Oswalt as the last pre-Kevin Feige Marvel TV series.
“Helstrom” was based on the Marvel comic “Hellstrom,” which centered on Damion Helstrom, aka the Son of Satan. In Hulu’s version, Daimon and Ana (who goes by Satana in the comic) Helstrom were the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. The siblings had a complicated dynamic as they tracked down the terrorizing worst of humanity.
“Homeland” alum Elizabeth Marvel starred as their mother, Victoria, who had been institutionalized for the last 20 years. The series also starred Ariana Guerra, Robert Wisdom, June Carryl and Alain Uy.
“Helstrom” was ordered to series last year along with “Ghost Rider,” which was set to see Gabriel Luna reprise his role from “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” However,...

Marvel series “Helstrom” has been canceled at Hulu after one season, Variety has learned.
The move to cancel the series was not a surprising one, as “Helstrom” was the last live-action show produced by the now defunct Marvel Television unit under Jeph Loeb. The writing may have also been on the wall due to the fact that marketing materials for “Helstrom” — including its trailer and key art — did not include the word “Marvel” despite being based on Marvel comic book characters.
The show’s cancellation serves as a muted end to Loeb’s live-action efforts at Marvel, which at one time included six shows on Netflix as well as “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” on ABC, “Legion” on FX, “Cloak & Dagger” on Freeform, “The Gifted” on Fox, and “Runaways” on Hulu. All of those have either been canceled or wrapped up their runs in the past two years.

Hulu’s “Helstrom” might sport an elaborate mythology, but like many comic book stories, it ultimately reveals a simplistic core. Loosely based on Marvel comics characters, “Helstrom” follows Daimon (Tom Austen) and Ana (Sydney Lemmon) Helstrom, two adult siblings with psychic powers and an intimate connection with the demon world. Both use their gift in different ways: Daimon teaches ethics by day and performs secular exorcisms by night, while Ana runs an auction house and kills violent offenders who slip through society’s cracks. They’re reunited when the demon that has possessed their institutionalized mother, Victoria (Elizabeth Marvel), revives the Helstrom’s long-dead serial killer father who wishes to exact his revenge. On top of this, they have to deal with the numerous demons already roaming the Earth, plotting to wreak havoc at all times.

The Helstrom panel at Comic-Con@Home opened on a somber note as stars June Carryl and Robert Wisdom revealed their own experiences of racism and how it ties into the Hulu drama.
“This show is timely because it’s about people trying to figure out who they are in the face of pure evil and that’s exactly where we are right now,” said Carryl, who plays Dr. Louise Hastings.
Carryl said that assumptions, projections, suspicion, appropriation, objectification, slurs, violation and lack of representation are a few of the “million ways you can kill someone” and revealed that she has to do a lot every time she leaves the house to feel safe.
“I am not sure why given all that it still takes watching someone die in 8 minutes and 46 seconds to finally recognise it’s all damage and it’s all the same death,” she added. “Everybody feels bad...

This year’s virtual Comic-Con@Home has announced its schedule for Friday, July 24. The highlights are below.
The virtual event replaces the annual San Diego Comic-Con, the largest fan convention in North America, which was to be held July 22–26 at the San Diego Convention Center, until the Covid-19 pandemic forced its cancellation.
In June, Comic-Con International — the non-profit organization that oversees Sdcc and its sister event, WonderCon in Anaheim, Calif. — announced it was moving forward with the virtual event on the same dates. This time, however, the event is free and open to all.
Friday’s events include panels for all three of AMC’s “Walking Dead” series, Hulu’s new Marvel series “Helstrom,” and creatives like Charlize Theron, Joss Whedon, and Robert Kirkman.
The Comic-Con@Home schedule — including Wednesday, July 22 and Thursday, July 23 — is being announced daily through Sunday.

Hulu and Marvel have announced the ensemble cast for the upcoming series Helstrom, the story of which “follows siblings and supposed serial killer offspring Daimon Helstrom (Austen) and Ana Helstrom (Lemmon). Tom Austen will take on the role of Daimon and Sydney Lemmon (Fear the Walking Dead) will play Ana. They will be joined by Elizabeth Marvel, Ariana Guerra (Raising Dion), Robert Wisdom (Ballers), June Carryl (Mindhunter), and Alain Uy (The Passage).
When talking about the cast, executive producer Paul Zbyszewski said:

The sober and gripping “Dead Women Walking” focuses on the final days of a series of female inmates facing the death sentence. Divided into nine chapters, each inching its way inexorably closer to the moment of execution, the drama turns the fragmentation of its approach to a powerful advantage. Not only do the individual stories — hard, jagged and persuasive — become tiles in a more complex mosaic, taken together they also give a peculiar experience of time that judders and halts, elongates and foreshortens. It’s impossible for most of us to say if this is an accurate representation of temporal reality for these characters, but it makes even those of us who are convinced we understand the issues around capital punishment consider it in a stark new light. This is not a film about the death penalty; it’s a film about the systems and practices we collectively call Death Row.

The dysfunctional family plot of “Back Roads,” which marks the directorial debut of actor Alex Pettyfer, is so twisted that every 10 minutes or so there is a new revelation meant to shock the audience, and this presumably goes back to Tawni O’Dell’s novel, on which the film is based.
The way this story is told also might have something to do with the participation of Adrian Lyne, who co-wrote the script with O’Dell. This is Lyne’s first film credit since the drama “Unfaithful” in 2002, and the particular emphasis on sex feels like it is his handiwork, so to speak.
Pettyfer also stars as Harley, a young man who has had to take responsibility for raising his three sisters after his mother (Juliette Lewis) was put in jail for murdering their father. This information is relayed to us in a slightly awkward title card at the beginning of the film.

"So twisted. Full of secrets." Samuel Goldwyn Films has released the first official trailer for an indie noir thriller titled Back Roads, which first premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year. Back Roads is also the directorial debut of English actor Alex Pettyfer, who also stars in the film as a young man stuck in the Pennsylvania backwoods caring for his three younger sisters after the death of his abusive father and the arrest of his mother. When he strikes up an affair with a local married woman, long-dormant family secrets bubble to the surface in this "back roads" thriller. The film's full cast includes Jennifer Morrison, Nicola Peltz, Chiara Aurelia, Hala Finley, June Carryl, Robert Patrick, with Juliette Lewis. This looks like a gritty, sweaty backwoods noir film for sure - and I'll admit that it doesn't seem so bad. Worth a watch. Here's the first official...

Long dreaming of stepping behind the camera, actor Alex Pettyfer made his directorial debut recently with the Tribeca-premiering Back Roads, in which he also stars.
Based on a novel by Tawni O’Dell, Back Roads centers on Harley (Pettyfer), a young man living in backwoods Pennsylvania, who is forced to become the caretaker for his three sisters after his father is murdered and his mother (Juliette Lewis) is sent to prison.
Reading the script for the project years ago—when he was 18 years old—Pettyfer never consciously set out to make Back Roads his first directorial outing, only coming back to the project years later when he realized that it had never been made. “I approached Michael Ohoven, one of the producers, about ten years later, and it was just my pure love for the story and wanting to see it get made,” Pettyfer told Deadline yesterday, explaining his ultimate...
