Rami Malek decided to "learn from other actors" so he could improvise on the set of 'The Amateur'.The 43-year-old actor stars as CIA cryptographer in the new adaptation of the 1981 novel of the same name by Robert Littell and explained that he was able to find those moments in which he could deviate from the script by analysing the talent that had gone on screen before him. He told ScreenRant: "I found myself just wanting to hold onto that person through the tactile nature of their belongings, and that's what I thought."It separated this character from a lot of other action heroes.""I go back to learning from other actors. I remember being on Paul Thomas Anderson's film 'The Master', and I would watch the great Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix and Amy Adams do these things in the moment. I'd never seen...

There’s no slowing down A Minecraft Movie, which hurtled past the $550 million mark at the global box office on its way to likely becoming the first title of 2025 to join the $1 billion club.
The Warner Bros. family event pic easily stayed No. 1 in its second weekend with a huge domestic haul of $80.6 million. It has now earned $281 million in North America and $296.6 million overseas for a worldwide total of $550.6 million. The foreign tally includes $20.5 million from China, one of the best showings in recent memory for a Hollywood title (Legendary East is handling the film there). However, Minecraft did tumble 68 percent in its second weekend after the Chinese government said it would further restrict film imports amid the ongoing tariff war with the Trump administration.

Rami Malek believes his character in “The Amateur” stands apart from the typical espionage thriller protagonist.
“He’s extremely different. Usually, we see someone who would be difficult to necessarily relate to personally for the majority of us, whereas I think we can see a lot of ourselves in Charlie,” Malek told Variety at the film’s New York premiere. “Many of us, just day to day, probably feel overlooked and underestimated at some point. I know I have in the past; I can imagine 99.9% of us have. That’s who Charlie is.”

For two decades, James Hawes has quietly been one of the industry’s most accomplished television directors. He’s always exhibited a knack for genre storytelling, but season one of the Gary Oldman-led Slow Horses reaffirmed how he can effectively add an unexpected wrinkle to a well-trodden genre like the spy thriller. That prowess now extends to his second feature film, and first major studio film, The Amateur, starring Oscar winner Rami Malek.
The British filmmaker presents the elegant look and feel of a Jason Bourne or Jack Ryan movie, only he’s chronicling an underestimated CIA analyst character in Charlie Heller (Malek) who has no choice but go out into the field himself. Adapted by screenwriters Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli, Hawes’ reimagining of Robert Littell’s 1981 novel tracks Charlie’s defiant globe-trotting pursuit of the terrorists who killed his wife, Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan).

Charlie Heller, the bereaved rookie vigilante Rami Malek plays in The Amateur, is all brains and no brawn. That sets him apart from his colleagues at the CIA, where he works as a cryptographer, running numbers while they run down suspects. It also distinguishes him, of course, from the Jason Bournes and James Bonds of the world — the perfect physical specimens that usually headline globe-hopping espionage claptrap of this sort. The Amateur opens Friday from director James Hawes, with Oscar winner Rami Malek playing a CIA cryptographer who seeks revenge against his wife's killers. Critics' reviews are mixed overall, with the action thriller earning a 65 percent at Rotten Tomatoes and a 53 score on Metacritic.
Based on the 1981 novel by Robert Littell, the 20th Century Studios' version of The Amateur plays out like Jason Bourne meets The Da Vinci Code, with Malek's "nerdy" character Charles "Charlie" Heller being praised by film experts as an "unlikely action hero." Joining him in the cast are Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, and Julianne Nicholson.
Before winning his Oscar for portraying Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), Malek took home an Emmy for his role as geeky computer hacker Elliot Alderson in Mr. Robot (2016). In other words, playing a character like Charlie, who specializes in cryptology, is right up his alley.

Academy Award-winning actor Rami Malek had his breakout role in the critically acclaimed series Mr. Robot, for which he received several accolades. As he's set to star in a different spy action film that involves cybersecurity and hacking, the actor also looked back at his role.
Speaking to Cbr's Grae Drake, while promoting his upcoming film, The Amateur, where he plays Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer and vigilante, Malek addressed the possibility of a Mr. Robot reunion. "I don't think it'd be very different," he said of what the project would look like. "I just saw [series creator Sam Esmail] in London a week and a half ago. We had a typical British Sunday roast together. We're brothers. We will always be brothers and Christian [Slater] is here in New York on Broadway, so go check that out. We all keep up."
The actor also talked about his hacking and computer skills.

Rami Malek stars in the new spy thriller filmThe Amateur, coming to theaters on April 11. With the film's early reviews, The Amateur has managed to score a fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though it will have a bit higher to climb with added reviews to have a chance at matching the score set by his James Bond movie.
Currently, The Amateur is scored at 69% on Rotten Tomatoes with a much higher audience score of 86%. The critics' score falls short of matching the score set by 2021's No Time to Die, the Bond film featuring Malek as the villain, which has scores of 83% and 88%. Even so, approaching 70% is a respectable score for The Amateur, which many critics had a great time watching.
"The Amateur doesn’t attempt to rewrite the book in terms of vigilante revenge stories, but it avoids the kind of slipshod errors that hobble most espionage fare," Eddie Harrison of film-authority.

The revenge thriller is among the most satisfying staples of cinema: generally, it features a hero with a very particular set of skills physically dominating anyone and everyone who gets in their way, en route to the ultimate catharsis of seeing wrongdoers get their comeuppance. That’s not the case in director James Hawes’ sophomore feature, The Amateur. Based on the novel by Robert Littell, our bad-guy-hunting hero isn’t a highly trained former assassin. He’s not even competent with a gun. Instead, Charlie Heller (Rami Malek) is a desk-bound cryptographer, a “nerdy fella who works on computers”, as one character calls him. On paper, it’s an intriguing approach. But the execution is only semi-successful.
The Amateur is at its best in the first act. Once his wife Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan) is murdered and Charlie commits to going after the killers, Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli’s script...

Charlie Heller (Rami Malek), the mad-as-hell secret-agent geek brainiac at the center of “The Amateur,” is a CIA analyst who works five floors underground at Langley, in the Decryption and Analysis department. There, he’s a master of all things coded and virtual, a surveillance hacker par excellence. Out of the office, he and his adoring business-person wife, Sarah (Rachel Brosnahan), reside in a renovated farmhouse and appear to have the perfect life. So when Sarah, on a corporate trip to London, gets taken hostage by a cadre of terrorists and is killed on the spot, it’s as if Charlie’s entire existence had been wiped away. Since the tragedy was an international incident, his bosses at the Agency assure him that the perpetrators will be hunted down. But that’s not enough for Charlie. It won’t sate his rage, his desire for vengeance. Instead, Charlie says, “I want to kill them himself.

Malek gives an eccentric performance as a nerdy agent who wants his superior Laurence Fishburne to retrain him as an assassin
Here is a moderate action spy thriller directed by James Hawes, who previously made the Nicholas Winton drama One Life. It is conceived in the robustly muscular style of Bourne and Mission: Impossible, and features Rami Malek as nerdy CIA intelligence analyst Charles Heller, whose wife is murdered by terrorists in London. Enraged at a lack of progress in the case and suspecting a cover-up, he blackmails his immediate superiors into training him to be an assassin (by threatening to reveal their black ops), so he can hunt his wife’s killers and whack them. His exasperated teacher is Colonel Henderson, played by Laurence Fishburne. It’s based on an 80s bestseller by Robert Littell, filmed once before with John Savage in the lead.

Typecasting is a double-edged sword. On one hand, we’ve heard countless stories of idiosyncratic actors lamenting that what made them unique has been diluted by a nonstop series of cookie-cutter roles, giving them little, if any, opportunity to show any range. On the other hand, for some performers, it’s likely that without that typecasting, they may never find consistent work to begin with.
Not to say that Rami Malek should be thankful that the roles he receives seem to be contingent upon him recycling the same awkward veneer for which we all recognize him—the man did, after all, win an Oscar for a vaguely convincing, party-trick imitation of Freddie Mercury. Rather, in the case of “The Amateur,” it would be difficult to come to any conclusion aside from this role having been curated entirely for the actor’s fidgety sensibilities.

Move over James Bond, Jack Reacher, and Jason Bourne -- there's a new action hero in town and his name is Charlie Heller. Okay, so that's probably not the sexiest or most eye-catching attempt to bolster the ranks of our biggest fictional spies but, in all fairness, that's hardly what "The Amateur" is trying to accomplish anyway. For starters, there's the matter of our unconventional leading man. Rami Malek, talented as he obviously is, isn't exactly anyone's first choice for a CIA agent out on a quest for vengeance against the criminals who murdered his wife in cold blood. For that matter, neither would James Hawes land at the top of most filmmaker wish lists for a story like this, despite building up a solid career as a television director (most recently on "Slow Horses"). But if there's anything this quiet, unassuming, and minimalist thriller is mainly about, it's this: Appearances can be deceiving,...

Logic suggests that rogue CIA assassin Jason Bourne might be much less of a threat if — instead of a shredded government super-soldier with a sniper’s accuracy and no personal attachments — he were a vaguely autistic wife guy who couldn’t hit someone with a bazooka if they were standing right in front of him. James Hawes’ “The Amateur” begs to differ.
An aggressively competent spy thriller that has less use for logic than its lead actor does for his smile, this globe-trotting Robert Littell adaptation would have us believe that no one is more dangerous than a math nerd who refuses to think of himself as a killer, and the film makes a compelling enough case to sustain itself across the entire television season’s worth of plot that it packs into two hours. Rami Malek has made that argument before, of course, and the “Mr. Robot” star’s...

A lot has changed in geopolitics since Charles Jarrott’s 1981 adaptation of Robert Littell’s novel The Amateur. Today, terrorism definitions are significantly muddier than the binaries of good and evil that were readily amplified during the Cold War. While the C.I.A. has always operated behind closed doors and in dark corners, governed by murky morality, it now does so behind the firewall of an ever-expanding surveillance state.
James Hawes’s adaptation of Littell’s novel, written by Ken Nolan and Gary Spinelli, is, like its predecessor, concerned with the inherently questionable ethics of an institution that has never, and will never, operate in daylight. “Nice office,” C.I.A. Director Moore (Holt McCallany) remarks to data analyst Charles Heller (Rami Malek) in the film, to which Heller cheekily responds that it is—if you don’t mind never having sunlight.

The final season of Outlander just got a colossal update from one of its leading stars. Outlander follows Claire Beauchamp Randall (Caitríona Balfe), a WWII nurse who goes back in time to Scotland in 1743. She meets the dashing Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan) and falls for him while also landing in the middle of an epic rebellion. Starz confirmed more than two years ago that Outlander would end with Season 8, and the final season even wrapped filming back in September 2024, but it’s still lacking an official premiere date. Caitríona Balfe recently sat down for a chat with Collider’s Steve Weintraub to talk about her upcoming action movie, The Amateur, and she teased an emotional season finale:
“Wrapping Outlander was very emotional. Everybody came to set, which was just very weird because they gave Sam [Heughan] and I a seven-page scene that was just full of dialogue to finish on,...

The Amateur, a remake of the 1981 film based on the novel by Robert Littell, is set to release on April 11, 2025. The action thriller stars Rami Malek as genius CIA decoder Charlie Heller, and the actor also doubles as an executive producer of the film.
Malek recently opened up to Times of India about what drew him to his character. "This role was an opportunity to explore the complexities of an ordinary person thrust into extraordinary circumstances. I wanted to play a character that felt grounded, who wasn't the stereotypical action hero, but who could still do something extraordinary in his own way," he shared.
"For myself, I gravitate to characters who are alienated and who can be seen as outcasts or feel like misfits or feel overlooked and disenfranchised perhaps," he told The Hollywood Reporter. "And to see them go on and do extraordinary things is something I wanted to...

As we step into April 2025, the cinematic landscape has already experienced a diverse array of movie releases, each leaving its mark on audiences and critics alike. Disney’s live-action remake of Snow White encountered significant challenges. Despite its ambitious $270 million budget, the film garnered only $146 million worldwide, leading to an anticipated loss of approximately $115 million. The project was marred by controversies, including casting choices and public statements by lead actress Rachel Zegler, which contributed to its underwhelming performance.
In contrast, Paddington in Peru charmed audiences and critics, achieving a 93% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 91% audience score. The film’s heartwarming narrative and engaging performances translated to a domestic box office gross of $41.3 million. The spy thriller Black Bag, featuring Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender, faced a lukewarm reception. With a modest box office return of just over $31 million against its $60 million budget, the film struggled to captivate audiences despite its star-studded cast.

“I want to find the people who killed my wife.” ~ Charles Heller Rami Malek is an American actor of Egyptian heritage best known for his award-winning portrayal of Freddie Mercury in the biographical film Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). In “The Amateur” he plays Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer who wants revenge after his wife’s murder. She could be the victim or the specific target of a terrorist attack. No matter. Over the last few years, Oscar winner Rami Malek has developed quite the line in playing socially awkward, variously psychologically traumatised, somewhat eccentric geniuses who sit all across the moral spectrum. Mr. Robot's Elliot Alderson, No Time To Die's villainous Safin, Bohemian Rhapsody's Freddie Mercury... the list goes on. In The Amateur, Slow Horses alum and One Life director James Hawes' upcoming revenge thriller, Malek is CIA decoder Charlie Heller, a man whose life is turned violently upside down when his wife (Rachel Brosnahan) is killed in a terrorist attack. In the tense first trailer for the film, which boasts the likes of Laurence Fishburne, Caitriona Balfe, Jon Bernthal, and Michael Stuhlbarg among its starry ensemble, it very quickly becomes clear that Charlie is set to become a worthy addition to Malek's resumé of unorthodox mavericks. It’s been a long time since we’ve seen Rami Malek in a lead role. Since he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for “Bohemian Rhapsody” in 2018, his biggest roles have been as a Bond villain in “No Time to Die” Denzel Washington’s LAPD partner in crime thriller “The Little Things,” and a supporting role in “Oppenheimer’s” large ensemble. None of these movies were really what you’d call Rami Malek movies. “The Amateur,” which 20th Century released a trailer for on Wednesday, is a Rami Malek movie. The espionage thriller looks to take advantage of Malek’s unique characteristics in a way nothing else quite has since “Mr. Robot.”

The Amateur star Rami Malek and director James Hawes explain how the upcoming espionage thriller pulls from Slow Horses, which the latter directed episodes for. Based on a 1981 novel of the same name by Robert Littell, The Amateur follows a CIA cryptographer who, after losing his wife in a London terrorist attack, blackmails his agency into training him and letting him pursue the people responsible. The film will mark the latest espionage-themed project for Hawes, who directed all six season 1 episodes of Slow Horses, Apple TV+'s acclaimed spy show.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, both Malek and Hawes explain how The Amateur draws from the spy movies that have come before, while also putting a very modern spin on its subject matter. Though the Jason Bourne films and classics like Three Days of the Condor (1975) are inspirations, Hawes affirms that it's also a "a very 2025 movie." Check...

In an age where everyone wants their own John Wick, The Amateur’s Rami Malek and James Hawes were eager to take another route.
Inspired by Robert Littell’s 1981 homonymous spy novel and Charles Jarrott’s own big-screen adaptation that same year, Malek and his director, Hawes, relied on The Amateur’s foundational premise as a jumping-off point for their modernized take. Upon losing his wife (Rachel Brosnahan) in a terrorist attack, CIA cryptographer Charlie Heller ( Malek) strongarms his ambivalent bosses into green-lighting his own personal revenge mission. Thus, in the newly released trailer (below), the viewer is conditioned to expect the trope where Heller transforms himself into a one-man killing machine. But he’s quickly in for a rude awakening by way of Laurence Fishburne’s CIA instructor character.
Heller instead returns to his existing core competencies involving computers and technology, and thanks to Malek’s Emmy-winning role as...

A series of James Bond films overtook the 1980s, but there are a few other on-screen spies with equally thrilling stories. Spy films have presented various exciting stories over the years, dealing with corruption, high-stakes missions, and political conflict. Often, spy films present a clear hero and villain, making it easy for audiences to become invested. Additionally, this distinction allows for the leading actors to stand out and give a lauded dramatic performance, such as Kevin Costner and Donald Sutherland.
Considering the decade in which these films were released, a few of them deal with components of the Cold War, while others take a different approach to the genre by implementing themes of relatable family dynamics and romance. Some of these films are up there with the best spy movies of all time, such as No Way Out, while others are underrated entries in the genre, worthy of some recognition,...

Exclusive: After a grueling few months for UK film and TV producers, there are signs that the industry is starting to head back to work following twin actors and writers strikes in the U.S.
Amateur, the 20th Century terrorism thriller starring Rami Malek, will be among the first studio shoots to resume filming in London next month, sources tell Deadline.
Amateur, which also stars Rachel Brosnahan and Laurence Fishburne, was halfway through production when the feature’s hundreds of cast, crew, and contractors were put on hiatus in July.
The film’s cast has prioritized the project ahead of other commitments they would be shooting had the strike not happened. “Productions needing lead actors back to complete means other shows and films cannot schedule starting,” said a source.
Amateur is directed by James Hawes, whose debut feature, the Anthony Hopkins vehicle One Life, has generated plenty of buzz during the fall festival season.
