The Amateur opens Friday from director James Hawes, with Oscar winner Rami Malek playing a CIA cryptographer who seeks revenge against his wife's killers. Critics' reviews are mixed overall, with the action thriller earning a 65 percent at Rotten Tomatoes and a 53 score on Metacritic.

Based on the 1981 novel by Robert Littell, the 20th Century Studios' version of The Amateur plays out like Jason Bourne meets The Da Vinci Code, with Malek's "nerdy" character Charles "Charlie" Heller being praised by film experts as an "unlikely action hero." Joining him in the cast are Laurence Fishburne, Rachel Brosnahan, Caitríona Balfe, Michael Stuhlbarg, Holt McCallany, and Julianne Nicholson.

Before winning his Oscar for portraying Queen frontman Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody (2018), Malek took home an Emmy for his role as geeky computer hacker Elliot Alderson in Mr. Robot (2016). In other words, playing a character like Charlie, who specializes in cryptology, is right up his alley.

Academy Award-winning actor Rami Malek had his breakout role in the critically acclaimed series Mr. Robot, for which he received several accolades. As he's set to star in a different spy action film that involves cybersecurity and hacking, the actor also looked back at his role.

Speaking to Cbr's Grae Drake, while promoting his upcoming film, The Amateur, where he plays Charles Heller, a CIA cryptographer and vigilante, Malek addressed the possibility of a Mr. Robot reunion. "I don't think it'd be very different," he said of what the project would look like. "I just saw [series creator Sam Esmail] in London a week and a half ago. We had a typical British Sunday roast together. We're brothers. We will always be brothers and Christian [Slater] is here in New York on Broadway, so go check that out. We all keep up."

Currently, The Amateur is scored at 69% on Rotten Tomatoes with a much higher audience score of 86%. The critics' score falls short of matching the score set by 2021's No Time to Die, the Bond film featuring Malek as the villain, which has scores of 83% and 88%. Even so, approaching 70% is a respectable score for The Amateur, which many critics had a great time watching.

"The Amateur doesn’t attempt to rewrite the book in terms of vigilante revenge stories, but it avoids the kind of slipshod errors that hobble most espionage fare," Eddie Harrison of film-authority.

The revenge thriller is among the most satisfying staples of cinema: generally, it features a hero with a very particular set of skills physically dominating anyone and everyone who gets in their way, en route to the ultimate catharsis of seeing wrongdoers get their comeuppance. That’s not the case in director James Hawes’ sophomore feature, The Amateur. Based on the novel by Robert Littell, our bad-guy-hunting hero isn’t a highly trained former assassin. He’s not even competent with a gun. Instead, Charlie Heller (Rami Malek) is a desk-bound cryptographer, a “nerdy fella who works on computers”, as one character calls him. On paper, it’s an intriguing approach. But the execution is only semi-successful.

Here is a moderate action spy thriller directed by James Hawes, who previously made the Nicholas Winton drama One Life. It is conceived in the robustly muscular style of Bourne and Mission: Impossible, and features Rami Malek as nerdy CIA intelligence analyst Charles Heller, whose wife is murdered by terrorists in London. Enraged at a lack of progress in the case and suspecting a cover-up, he blackmails his immediate superiors into training him to be an assassin (by threatening to reveal their black ops), so he can hunt his wife’s killers and whack them. Typecasting is a double-edged sword. On one hand, we’ve heard countless stories of idiosyncratic actors lamenting that what made them unique has been diluted by a nonstop series of cookie-cutter roles, giving them little, if any, opportunity to show any range. On the other hand, for some performers, it’s likely that without that typecasting, they may never find consistent work to begin with.

Not to say that Rami Malek should be thankful that the roles he receives seem to be contingent upon him recycling the same awkward veneer for which we all recognize him—the man did, after all, win an Oscar for a vaguely convincing, party-trick imitation of Freddie Mercury. Rather, in the case of “The Amateur,” it would be difficult to come to any conclusion aside from this role having been curated entirely for the actor’s fidgety sensibilities.

A new spot and posters for The Amateur, from 20th Century Studios and starring Oscar winner Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) and Academy Award nominee Laurence Fishburne (What’s Love Got to Do with It), are now available.

Advance tickets for The Amateur, including early access screenings, are now available for purchase wherever tickets are sold. The new espionage thriller opens in theaters nationwide on April 11, 2025.

On Saturday, April 5, ahead of its official opening on Friday, April 11, audiences will have the opportunity to see the film early by attending The Amateur: Early Access Screenings. The Amateur: Early Access Screenings begin on Saturday, April 5 at 6:00 p.m. local time.

The movie has been rated PG-13 by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) for some strong violence, and language.

20th Century Studios is kicking off this chilly Wednesday afternoon with some heat from Rami Malek‘s latest film, The Amateur. The studio debuted a new action-packed trailer and poster for The Amateur, an espionage thriller in which Malek’s character uses his unique set of skills to find the people who killed his wife. He has no experience in the field, but that won’t stop him from launching a manhunt that defies expectations.

Amateur, the 20th Century terrorism thriller starring Rami Malek, will be among the first studio shoots to resume filming in London next month, sources tell Deadline.

Amateur, which also stars Rachel Brosnahan and Laurence Fishburne, was halfway through production when the feature’s hundreds of cast, crew, and contractors were put on hiatus in July.

The film’s cast has prioritized the project ahead of other commitments they would be shooting had the strike not happened. “Productions needing lead actors back to complete means other shows and films cannot schedule starting,” said a source.

Amateur is directed by James Hawes, whose debut feature, the Anthony Hopkins vehicle One Life, has generated plenty of buzz during the fall festival season.
