“The Bridge: Season 4” is likely the final chapter in this crime drama from Sweden and Denmark. As before, it’s based on a complex crime scenario at their border affecting both countries, providing another round with a new menace for Saga (Sofia Helin) and Henrik (Thure Lindhardt) to confront. That’s hard to get off the ground, since Saga has been in jail for the eight months since Season 3’s events for allegedly killing her allegedly psycho mother. Since her release occurs in the first episode, it’s no spoiler to inform you that she’s cleared and returned to duty, albeit with some difficulties. Even knowing that, the method of getting there is intriguing enough for a good watch.

Back in 2011, the Scandinavian crime series, “The Bridge,” was not only hugely popular in Europe but spawned quite a few remakes and derivatives on both sides of the Atlantic. The now oft-used premise is that a body is found straddling the national border of a bridge joining Denmark and Sweden, creating jurisdictional confusion. That gets worse when they discover that the top and bottom halves are from two different women. Successor series have been set on the US/Mexico, Singapore/Malaysia, Greece/Turkey and the Russia/Estonia borders. A France/England version used the Chunnel in the same way. That list may be more illustrative than complete, since variations exist under non-bridgey titles. In each, a cop from one side partners with one from the other, despite cultural and personal differences that add tensions and friction to the whodunnit component.

After highlighting the most overlooked films of 2021, today we put our spotlight on those that need a home in the first place: movies we loved on the festival circuit—from Berlinale, SXSW, Sundance, TIFF, NYFF, Rotterdam, and beyond—still seeking U.S. distribution.
For acting also as a 2021 retrospective, we hope that highlighting these titles spurs some distributor interests and a release in the next twelve months. Make sure to follow us on Twitter for the latest distribution updates. As we move into 2022, one can also track our upcoming festival coverage here.
We should note that The Dog Who Wouldn’t Be Quiet, Taming the Garden, and Liborio nearly made the cut, but they’ll get a digital premiere on Mubi this month.
Ali & Ava (Clio Barnard)
It’s so rare to find a romance between two middle-aged characters in which the main conflict is just baggage of past relationships and past hurt.

Lise (Flora Ofelia Hofmann Lindahl) couldn’t be happier now that she knows her mother’s (Ida Cæcilie Rasmussen’s Anna) determination has successfully overcome her father’s (Thure Lindhardt’s Anders) objections about sending her to school. It’s the late 1800s after all. A big reason why a farming family such as theirs has so many children is to work the land. Sending off the eldest at fourteen isn’t therefore conducive to their home’s machinery—especially since Anders has no qualms with leaving the daily chores to his sister, mother, daughters, and servants while leaving for hours on end. If Lise had anyone else to thank besides her mother for the miracle that is her impending emancipation, it would therefore have to be God. Unfortunately, God’s will has never been purely optimistic.

Blessed with scene-stealing natural beauty, Western Norway has served as a breathtaking backdrop for international films such as Alex Garland’s sci-fi drama “Ex Machina” and “Mission: Impossible — Fallout.” But local bizzers say there’s more to the region than meets the eye.
“People may already know that our region is picture perfect,” says Sigmund Elias Holm, of the Western Norway Film Commission, but “it’s also a creative hotbed open to international co-productions, whether it’s controversial docs, uncompromising drama or inventive genre films.”
With Norway the Country in Focus at this year’s European Film Market, 10 rising Norwegian producers will be presented as part of the Norwegian Producers Spotlight at the Efm Producers Hub. A number of industry professionals from Western Norway will also be on hand with new projects showcasing what the region has to offer.

When it comes to The Bridge, the relationship between Saga (Sofia Helin) and Henrick (Thure Lindhardt) is everything. This is why in the fourth season, with the focus being less on the police procedure and more on the emotion works so well.
Two years later than the events of the last season, the brutal murder of a woman is investigated by Saga and Henrick. With Saga only recently being released from jail the repercussions of her mother’s death still have a high impact on her, which Henrick may finally find the truth about his family’s disappearance.
The beauty of the Saga character is that she is almost robotic in the way she is played by Sofia Helin. She has an almost android like quality about her where she is trying to understand how to be human and is constantly learning. The truth is of course that she is...

What did you find most appealing about Marcella when you first heard the pitch?
Well, I was pitched the idea by Nicola Larder (Marcella’s co-creator and executive producer). We met in Italy and were talking about The Bridge, and she actually pitched me an idea about this female detective being left by her husband and bringing back an old case. I really liked that because it sounded like something I could probably work with. The opportunity to work abroad was what really attracted me,...

As UK remake The Tunnel returns, we celebrate Swedish/Danish crime drama The Bridge...
9pm, Saturday night, BBC Four. For the few of us who still, on occasion, watch television when it’s actually broadcast, that timeslot means only one thing: high-quality drama from outside the anglophone world. Okay, so some of the series are less impressive than others, and one or two are in English (remember Australia’s The Code?) but these are exceptions to the rule. What began as a fad, accompanied by much reductive talk of ‘Scandi noir’ and a mildly disturbing national obsession with Sarah Lund’s knitwear, has culminated in a golden age for telly addicts. Our initial resistance to subtitles has faded, and a whole world of often beautifully acted, compellingly plotted drama has opened up. We haven’t strayed very far outside Europe yet, but it’s a start.

"Some programmer screwed up somewhere." Vertigo Films has released the first trailer for Steven Gomez's Kill Command, a science fiction horror thriller about man eating machines pitted against helpless humans - pretty much. The film stars English actress Vanessa Kirby as some kind of cyborg, Danish actor Thure Lindhardt, plus David Ajala, Tom McKay, Bentley Kalu and Mike Noble as an elite unit of Marines that goes in for an exercise and discovers they're in for a death match with some very creepy, nasty robots. This looks kind of awesome! I'm actually looking forward to seeing this, nice surprise sci-fi discovery. The VFX are impressive - I'm kinda creeped out. Everything about it looks solid, might be entertaining. Identify! Here's the first trailer (+UK poster) for Steven Gomez's Kill Command, found via The Movie Box: Kill Command is a sci-fi action thriller set in a near future, technology-reliant society that pits man against killing machines.

With my main experience of The Bridge coming from one of its remakes, The Tunnel, I did wonder if it would be a mistake jumping straight in with The Bridge: The Complete Season Three. Thankfully I found that it was a very good move to make…
When a woman is found murdered and placed in an elaborately constructed family scene, Saga (Sofia Helin) is once again tasked with working with a new Danish colleague to work on the case. When the first choice is killed while on duty though, her new colleague Henrik (Thure Lindhardt) is a better fit.
While I should have watched the first two seasons of The Bridge to get acclimatised to this one I’m glad to say that season three is easy to jump into. This is very much a show centred around Saga and Sofia Helin’s excellent performance as the unique detective. The...

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

Director: Anders Morgenthaler
Writer: Anders Morgenthaler
Producers: Marie Gade Denessen, Julie Lind-Holm
U.S. Distributor: Rights Available
Cast: Kim Basinger, Jordan Prentice, Peter Stormare
While his 2006 film, Princess, starring Thure Lindhardt, received a great deal of attention after premiering in the Director’s Fortnight sidebar at Cannes, Anders Morgenthaler’s 2007 sophomore feature, Echo (with Kim Bodnia) never received theatrical release outside of Denmark. After working in television since then, he’s completed his third film feature, dealing with infant prostitution in Eastern Europe. And starring Kim Basinger. Come now, that sounds absolutely delectable. While the original title, Petit was preferable to the generic sounding I’m Here, this sounds like an excellent offbeat showcase for the beautiful Basinger, and we see Peter Stormare is once again part of Morgenthaler’s cast. This could go either way, but it’s definitely a project high on our radar.

Chicago – Boris Rodriguez’s “Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal” tells a laughably inane story ripe for B-movie matinées, yet insists on taking itself (mostly) seriously. The director has made no secret of the fact that he envisions his film to be a meditation on the “darkness of creativity,” and the price that must be paid in order for an artist to find sufficient inspiration.
That could easily make an intriguing subject for a motion picture (and has many times before), but Rodriguez’s metaphorical horror tropes are so obvious and synthetic that they bore when they should provoke. That isn’t to say the film is lacking in the acting department (it isn’t) or doesn’t have some spectacularly unnerving imagery (kudos to Dp Philippe Kress), but on a story level, “Eddie” comes up mightily short. It might’ve made a fine short film, but at 83 minutes, it runs out...

Chicago – I’ve rarely said this about Neil Jordan movie – in fact, maybe never – but I was bored during his latest, the vampire drama “Byzantium,” a movie with an intriguing cast and interesting story but little in the way of passion, emotion, dread, or the other intangibles needed to make a horror film like this effective. There are elements of “Byzantium” that threaten to work but then they’re flattened into a boring narrative with characters that don’t connect and a stylistic approach by Jordan that doesn’t give the give the piece the personality it needs to be considered as more than an arthouse “Twilight.” It’s a vampire movie without a pulse.
Rating: 2.0/5.0
Which is going to sound untrue when I tell you the plot. It’s the kind of story that should vibrate with energy but some poor decisions on both sides of the camera take...

Director: Boris Rodriguez. Review: Mark Appleton. In TV we’re getting used to the traditional ‘bad guy’ actually being more the good guy and, not only that, but we’re actually rooting for them now. Programmes like Dexter lead the way with this and others have tried to follow suit.Movies however have been slightly slow on the uptake on this material. Now, with Eddie (the sleepwalking cannibal), it feels like they’ve arrived. Eddie is all about Lars, played by Thure Lindhardt, a painter in his native Denmark he comes to Canada to teach at a school and hopefully find inspiration. It’s the inspiration part were Eddie comes into things. Eddie, played by Dylan Scott Smith, is a mute who, when he’s stressed or upset, sleepwalks and eats things – in case you didn’t get that from the title. This is a dark horror comedy, the kind...

Fast & Furious 6 cars, Star Trek into Darkness spaceship pass $200 million milestone at North America box office According to weekend box-office studio estimates released Sunday morning (June 9), two blockbusters passed the $200 million milestone in North America this past weekend: Justin Lin’s actioner Fast & Furious 6, starring fast and furious cars, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, and Vin Diesel, and J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek into Darkness, starring the star-trekking spaceship Enterprise, Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, and Benedict Cumberbatch. However, box-office actuals released on Monday revealed that Star Trek into Darkness studio Paramount had been a bit too optimistic. (Photo: one of the Fast & Furious 6 cars, with Vin Diesel at the wheel.) At no. 2 this past weekend, Fast & Furious 6 added $19.62 million (down 44%), cuming at $202.81 million according to figures found at Box Office Mojo. Showtime has decided to cancel The Borgias after three seasons. The low-rated drama's last episode will air on June 16th.
The Borgias follows the story of Pope Alexander (Jeremy Irons) and his struggle to maintain his power at the turn of the 16th century. The historical drama's large cast also includes François Arnaud, Holliday Grainger, Joanne Whalley, Lotte Verbeek, David Oakes, Sean Harris, Peter Sullivan, Simon McBurney, Steven Berkoff, Aidan Alexander, Julian Bleach, Thure Lindhardt, Gina McKee, and Colm Feore.
Season three of The Borgias premiered in April and thus far the show's been averaging about a half a million viewers for each episode's first airing.
There had been talk of wrapping up the show's ongoing storylines with a movie instead of a fourth season but that's not happening.
Still, series creator Neil Jordan says that, "For...

Fast & Furious 6 weekend box office: Biggest Fast and Furious domestic opening ever? (Photo: Dwayne Johnson in Fast & Furious 6) Fast & Furious 6 will easily top Memorial Day weekend at the North American box office. According to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo, the Justin Lin-directed action thriller featuring Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Vin Diesel, and Jordana Brewster earned $38.2 million at 3,658 locations on Friday — including $6.5 million from 2,409 late Thursday and midnight screenings. Fast & Furious 6 vs. Fast Five Reportedly budgeted at $160 million, Universal’s Fast & Furious 6 will in all likelihood boast the biggest opening weekend ever of any Fast and Furious movie. In its first three days out in late April 2011, Fast Five scored $86.19 million at 3,644 locations. Fast & Furious 6 could easily reach $92-95 million and possibly go as high as $100+ million by Sunday evening. For the four-day haul, Fast & Furious 6 could score $120 million. Is Fast & Furious 6 on its way to becoming a major blockbuster?...

Fast & Furious 6 box office: Best opening ever of a Fast and Furious movie? (Photo: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker in Fast & Furious 6) Fast & Furious 6 will easily top the North American box office on Friday, May 24. According to very early, very rough estimates found at Deadline.com, the Justin Lin-directed action thriller starring Dwayne Johnson, Paul Walker, and Vin Diesel, should collect $35 million at 3,658 locations — including $6.5 million from late Thursday and midnight screenings. For comparison’s sake: Fast Five, which opened in late April 2011, earned $3.8 million at midnight screenings. (Check out: Fast & Furious 6 Memorial Day Weekend Box Office: $120 Million?) Oh, but wait. Fast & Furious 6 had the advantage of late-Thursday, pre-midnight screenings, and although the latest Fast and Furious movie is clearly ahead of its predecessor, we’re comparing melons and watermelons here. That’s much like claiming that Fast & Furious 6 will have by far the biggest opening ever of a Fast and Furious...

We've already seen a couple of trailers for director Neil Jordan‘s new vampire thriller Byzantium, but this one is being referred to as the official domestic trailer. The film stars Gemma Arterton, Saoirse Ronan, and Sam Riley. I've been hearing that it's a great movie. Judging from the trailers it looks like it will be. Here's a brief synopsis:
Two mysterious women seek refuge in a run-down coastal resort. Clara meets lonely Noel, who provides shelter in his deserted guesthouse, Byzantium. Schoolgirl Eleanor befriends Frank and tells him their lethal secret. They were born 200 years ago and survive on human blood. As knowledge of their secret spreads, their past catches up on them with deathly consequence.
The film also stars Jonny Lee Miller, Daniel Mays, Caleb Landry Jones, Kate Ashfield, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Uri Gavriel, and Thure Lindhardt. The film will be released in theaters on June 28th, 2013.

Chicago – There’s something deeper going on in “Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal,” opening tomorrow at Music Box. I think. It’s about a struggling artist who finds inspiration in a small town when he’s forced to serve as guardian for the title character. Don’t all artists have something in common with cannibals given the way they turn their own (or other people’s) insides into fuel for their creativity? While that’s an engaging and interesting starting place for a horror-comedy, Boris Rodriguez’s movie sadly ends up being neither an effective horror movie nor a memorable satire. It just kind of, pardon me for going there, sleepwalks through its clever set-up.
Thure Lindhardt, so great in “Keep the Lights On,” stars as Lars, a painter who goes to a snowy, secluded town to find his creative muse and does so in the most unexpected of places.

Vampire movies are about sex. This has become practically a rule, and that’s totally okay. I have no problem with Taylor Lautner winning Best Shirtless Performance at the MTV Movie Awards. But if you’re going to make a movie with irrepressibly erotic vampires, you should figure out why you’re doing it. The problem with Neil Jordan’s Byzantium is that it so drips with sex it loses purpose. It has elements of every recent incarnation of the genre, moments of horror and action and myth-making, but in the end it’s more of a bland vampiric soup than anything with real bite. Saoirse Ronan is Eleanor, two centuries old but trapped forever in her teenage years. She feeds only on those ready to die, which typically means the silent and fading elderly. She writes of her life but then tears up the pages, knowing that no one can ever know who she truly is...

Interview with a Vampire director Neil Jordan has made a solid looking new vampire film called Byzantium, which stars Gemma Arterton, Saoirse Ronan, and Sam Riley. The movie premiered at the Toronto Film Festival, and it ended up getting a good amount of positive reviews. The new trailer features new footage including Arterton bathing in a waterfall of blood. Here's the synopsis:
Seventeen years after Neil Jordan first dipped into the vampire genre with Interview With the Vampire, his Byzantium proves that he has lost none of his taste for the bloody and Gothic. Drenched in a rich, suitably gloomy atmosphere, Jordan brings a crystalline vision to bear on this story of two female vampires who wreak havoc on an unsuspecting English seaside community, as the film fluctuates between gory mayhem and melancholic reflection.

In Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal, a once world-renown painter - who seems to have lost his muse - comes to a small art school to teach. There he is introduced to Eddie, a mute man-child who hangs around the school because his family donates a lot of money to the school. Eddie has a peculiar problem: when he is stressed out, he tends to sleepwalk, kill, and eat small animals. We spoke with director and co-writer Boris Rodriguez, who spoke about the catchy title and being a tortured artist.
Where did the idea for Eddie: The Sleepwalking Cannibal come from?
It came from my friend and co-writer John Rannells, who pitched it to me originally. It wasn’t a sleepwalking cannibal; it was a retarded werewolf and a novelist, and it was on the outer banks of North Carolina. Gradually, as we kept reworking the story, he went to Los...
