Justin Lin is ready to announce his next project, Stakehorse. Is it about a horse made of wooden stakes? Doubtful. Sources say the forthcoming crime thriller is like Ben Affleck’s 2010 banger The Town. The screenplay hails from Justin Piasecki, with a plot revolving around a horse veterinarian who has a side hustle patching up criminals who need medical attention under the table.
After shooting several chapters of the Fast and Furious saga and more, Lin is a clever and creative director with a sleek style all his own. In addition to directing Stakehorse, Lin will produce through his Perfect Storm Entertainment studio with Todd Lieberman and Alex Young of Hidden Pictures. Perfect Storm’s Andrew Schneider and Sal Gatdula will exec produce.

Lin and his Perfect Storm Entertainment banner will also produce the feature, joining Todd Lieberman and Alex Young of Hidden Pictures on the project.
Justin Piasecki wrote the script, much of which is being kept in the stable. It is known that it centers on a horse veterinarian who has a side hustle doing medical work for criminals who may need work off the books.
Sources say the project is tonally similar to The Town, the crime thriller directed by Ben Affleck. The script landed near the top of the 2023 Black List.
Perfect Storm’s Andrew Schneider and Sal Gatdula will exec produce.

Exclusive: Lionsgate is closing a deal to purchase a package that will have Chandler Baker adapt her short story Big Bad for Chris Landon to direct. Todd Lieberman and Hidden Pictures will produce with Landon.
It’s Landon’s first new attachment after dropping out of directing Scream 7 in a chain of events that started with Spyglass firing actress Melissa Barrera after a salvo of social media the Scream franchise backer felt was anti-Semitic. This was after the October 7 terror attack in Israel and the subsequent invasion of Gaza. Jenna Ortega then dropped out, and Landon followed.
Author of the bestseller Whisper Network, Baker wrote this short story as part of the anthology novel Creature Feature. Here is the logline for what has the potential to be a howling good werewolf movie, when the story was published last fall: The Strauss family is on knife’s edge. Sam is a resentful stay-at-home dad.

Amazon MGM Studios have landed rights to Benjamin Percy’s novella “American Criminal,” with Gavin O’Connor negotiating to direct.
The film, which Hidden Pictures and NeoText will produce, follows a professional thief who, after being apprehended by an FBI agent, is coaxed into infiltrating a violent Midwestern gang with the goal of dismantling them from the inside. However, what the FBI agent doesn’t know is that the thief is also orchestrating the largest – and last – heist of his life.
O’Connor has directed a number of popular and critically acclaimed works, including “Warrior” with Joel Edgerton and Tom Hardy, “The Accountant” with Ben Affleck, “Miracle” with Kurt Russell, and “Tumbleweeds,” which featured an Oscar-nominated turn from Janet McTeer. He most recently retimed with Affleck on 2020’s “The Way Back,” the story of an alcoholic basketball coach.

Once upon a time, "The Fighter" might have starred ... Eminem? Development on the film began in 2003, while Eminem was fresh off his lead role in "8 Mile," which won an Oscar that year for Best Original Song with "Lose Yourself." He had also achieved success the year before with "The Eminem Show," which won the Grammy for Best Rap Album and was the world's bestselling album of 2002. As he racked up the #1 album, song, and movie virtually simultaneously, Hollywood wanted to continue riding that success and working with Eminem. And it seems he was looking to channel his own inner Rocky, too.

Stoners and comedy fans everywhere have reason to rejoice: a Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong biopic is on the way.
Written by Danya Jiminez and Hannah McMechan (who both wrote for Comedy Central’s 2020 reboot of The Ren & Stimpy Show) and directed by Kristian Mercado, the film will follow the comedic duo’s origins through a “never-before-seen” lens, showing their rise from obscurity to stardom. The release date of the film is still unknown, but many feel it’s high time the duo gets their due big-screen recognition.
“We are excited to show the world how two dudes from completely different backgrounds got together, changed comedy, and made cannabis mainstream!” Cheech and Chong said in a joint statement (pun intended).
Both Marin and Chong will have executive producer credits on the project. The beloved cult-icons partnered with Todd Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures after the production company acquired the rights to the yet-to-be-named flick.

Hey, Dave’s not here, man.
Who is here, though, is Todd Lieberman of Hidden Pictures as he partners with Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, and Underground as well as Five All in the Fifth Entertainment for a planned biopic of the comedy team, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Cheech and Chong are the comic duo who brought the stoners to the mainstream with their 1978 movie, Up in Smoke. They gained popularity with their uncensored and counterculture comedy and followed that movie with Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie in 1980 and Nice Dreams in 1981.
The biopic is set to have Kristian Mercado at the helm as director. Mercado is no stranger to making comedies, having directed specials for comedians Michael Che, Hannibal Burress, Ilana Glazer, and more. He recently made his feature film debut with his film If You Were Last, starring Anthony Mackie and Missi Pyle, which screened at SXSW this year.

The origin story of Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, the pioneering comedians whose 1978 film Up in Smoke has transcended cult status, is getting its own big screen treatment.
Todd Lieberman’s Hidden Pictures is partnering with Marin and Chong, Underground, and Five All in the Fifth Entertainment on a feature biopic about the comedy duo.
Cheech and Chong came to prominence in the ’70s and ’80s, becoming synonymous with stoner culture by riffing on and lifting up the counterculture of the time, from hippies to (of course) cannabis. Their combined output included successful stand-up shows, comedy albums, and low-budget feature films, including Up in Smoke, Cheech and Chong’s Next Movie (1980) and Nice Dreams (1981).

Jennifer Lopez has been on a huge marriage kick lately. This past year saw the release of Marry Me, a romantic comedy where she plays a pop star who marries a regular joe, played by Owen Wilson. Her real life this year also saw her marry her longtime on-again, off-again boyfriend, Ben Affleck. And now, Amazon Prime Video reveals the new trailer for Lopez’s next film, the action-romantic-comedy Shotgun Wedding. The film also stars Josh Duhamel, Jennifer Coolidge, Sônia Braga, Cheech Marin, Selena Tan, D’Arcy Carden, Callie Hernandez, Desmin Borges, Steve Coulter, Alberto Isaac, and Lenny Kravitz.
“In Shotgun Wedding, Darcy (Jennifer Lopez) and Tom (Josh Duhamel) gather their lovable but very opinionated families for the ultimate destination wedding, just as the couple begin to get cold feet. And if that wasn’t enough of a threat to the celebration, suddenly everyone’s lives are in danger when the entire party is taken hostage.

Nothing can go wrong on Jennifer Lopez’s big day… right?
Wrong. The “Marry Me” actress and international pop star leads Prime Video’s upcoming romantic comedy, “Shotgun Wedding,” about a bride (Lopez) and groom (Josh Duhamel) whose nuptials lead to a horrific hostage situation, and not just because of the bad buffet. The action rom-com also stars Jennifer Coolidge as Lopez’s monster-in-law who wields a massive gun and yells “nobody fucks with my family” in the trailer.
The ever-smooth Lenny Kravitz is Lopez’s onscreen ex, but it’s the international pirates who really throw a wrench into the ceremony. D’Arcy Carden, Sônia Braga, Cheech Marin, Selena Tan, Callie Hernandez, Desmin Borges, Steve Coulter, and Alberto Isaac round out the ensemble cast.

Jennifer Lopez straddles the action and romantic comedy genres in her next film “Shotgun Wedding,” and the first trailer promises a laugh-filled, high-octane affair. Kind of like “Die Hard” at a wedding.
Lopez and Josh Duhamel star as a couple who gather their family and friends for the ultimate destination wedding, but just as the two start to get cold feet, the wedding is crashed by Lopez’s ex (played by Lenny Kravitz) and the entire wedding party is taken hostage.
If you’ve ever wanted to see Jennifer Coolidge use a machine gun or a wedding dress get turned into a hand-to-hand combat outfit, this is the movie for you.
Armie Hammer was originally set to star before production began, but Duhamel took over the role when troubling Hammer accusations surfaced.

Disney+’s Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers has won the 2022 Emmy for outstanding television movie, which was handed out at the second Creative Arts Emmys presentation Sunday night.
“This is not the place I thought we would be, but we don’t get here without many, many people,” said producer Todd Lieberman, who noted that the idea couldn’t have happened “without [the] bizarre and brilliant minds of our writers.” He also noted director Akiva Schaffer.
The hybrid live-action/computer-animated comedy took home the top prize in a category that was likely the biggest wild card of the season, which saw four feature spinoffs of television series — Chip ‘n’ Dale, Ray Donovan: The Movie, Reno 911!: The Hunt for QAnon and Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas — face off against HBO’s somber Holocaust drama The Survivor, which the cabler acquired following its world premiere at the 2021 Toronto International Film Festival.

“Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers” is one of the biggest surprises of the year. And keeping that surprise going, the Disney+ original film is now an Emmy nominee (for Outstanding Television Movie).
The movie, a whip-smart, metatextual comedy, imagines Chip (John Mulaney) and Dale (Andy Samberg) as stars of a popular 1980s TV series (“Chip ‘n’ Dale: Rescue Rangers”) that, over the years, grew estranged. Now, with a rash of mysterious crimes that share a connection with the series, the two have to team up once again to take down the bad guys and save the day – for real this time. Along the way, they bump into other animated icons and uncover a vast conspiracy, hidden underneath Hollywood’s sunny veneer.
As imagined by screenwriters Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” takes aim squarely at the live-action reboots and re-imaginings that have become a staple of...

“Emma’s novel is tender and funny, life-affirming and poignant, sweet and nostalgic, deep and rich,” said Erin Westerman, Lionsgate’s President of Production. “There’s no relationship more fraught than that between parent and child, and it only gets more so as the years go by. Jason is the perfect director for this project – he can present the big, fascinating ideas and then drill down into the emotional center to change your whole perspective.”

Although the feature film “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” was released on Disney+ and not in theaters, director Akiva Schaffer knows the importance of seeing a movie with an audience, as proven by the film’s tastemakers screening at the D23 conference and its L.A. world premiere.
“At home, it’s so easy to have a look at your phone,” he tells Variety. “You can miss half the things because they’re visual in the movie, but then again, as somebody who’s put out those movies and had nobody in the theaters, that’s not any good either.”
He’s referencing the poor box-office performance of his last feature, “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” (2016), which he directed and starred in along with the other two members of musical trio the Lonely Island: Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone. Since then, the film has garnered a cult following.

At the same time it released the weekly chart, Nielsen also put out its monthly edition of The Gauge, indicating the continued march of streaming as a percentage of overall viewing via a TV screen. Streaming set another record for share of viewing in May, reaching almost 32, up 2 compared with April’s previous record level. In line with typical trends, May was also the month with the least viewing, with overall tune-in slipping 2.7. The release of the first batch of Season 4 episodes of Stranger Things on Netflix as well as...

The Jennifer Lopez-Josh Duhamel Lionsgate romantic comedy Shotgun Wedding is heading straight to streaming as Prime Video has snatched up all U.S. rights for the pic from Lionsgate. No release date has been set on the streamer, but similar to other Prime Video features, it’s expected that Shotgun Wedding will also receive a day-and-date limited theatrical release.
Prime Video previously acquired international streaming rights for the Jason Moore-directed action-comedy in several key territories, where the movie will still receive a theatrical release.
In Shotgun Wedding, Darcy (Lopez) and Tom (Duhamel) gather their lovable but very opinionated families for the ultimate destination wedding just as the couple begin to get cold feet. And if that wasn’t enough of a threat to the celebration, everyone’s lives become suddenly in danger when the entire party is taken hostage. The pic also stars Jennifer Coolidge, Sonia Braga, Cheech Marin,...

I’ll never forget the first time I attended the Oscars. The glitz, the glamour, the unparalleled show of all shows. Getting to experience the majestic beauty of the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion. The stunning cocktail gowns and tuxes. To say I was intimidated would be an understatement as I had never been anywhere this stuffed with important and famous people. Rubbing elbows with movie stars and seeing the who’s who of Hollywood all in one place – I felt as if I’d reached the Hollywood mountaintop.
It was March 25, 1996, and yes I was at that glorious event,...
