Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, 1976. Pitched for the American League's Cleveland Indians, 1946-1958.
The Cleveland Indians retired his number in 1998.
His best pitch was his sinking fast ball.
As manager, he won the World Series in 1978 and a pennant in 1981.
Missed three seasons due to military service in the Navy during WW II.
Managed the Kansas City Royals (1970-1972), Chicago White Sox (1977, 1978) and New York Yankees (1978, 1979, 1981, 1982).
He played two seasons with the Indians in 1941 and 1942, but as a third baseman.
Made major league debut (as a third baseman) on 9 September 1941.
