Amid the classic, flashy film and television premieres this week at SXSW, the festival also offered a forum for burgeoning creators to showcase their work in the Independent TV Pilot Program.
These seven wide-ranging pilots rely primarily on personal experiences — from mental illness to queer identity — while also taking creative risks to offer something new to the television landscape.
Screened throughout the week, the pilots debuted at the Rollins Theatre at The Long Center on March 9 to a receptive crowd, which included Woody Harrelson, who attended in support of former Champions co-star Kevin Iannucci’s project R&r.
Following the premiere screening, the creative teams from each project took the stage to discuss the unique challenges that independent filmmakers are facing in the current television environment and how those were overcome on their projects, including lack of financing and resources.

At some point during the filming of Bulldozer, law enforcement got word that the half-hour comedy pilot was filming without proper permits.
“They started trying to bust down the door,” recalls director Andrew Leeds of officers showing up to their shoot in the Valley, demanding the production clear out.
It was a potentially disastrous moment, given that Bulldozer was self-financed (no studio lawyers to intervene), and was largely made by calling in favors to people like Mary Steenburgen, who plays the mother to creator/star Joanna Leeds’ character. Producers held the door shut so they could finish filming, and tried to shield Steenburgen from the chaos, not wanting the show’s biggest name to feel she was on a production that didn’t have its shit together.
“I am literally chatting Mary up, looking over my shoulder at these cops going, ‘Oh my God, please don’t turn around,’” says executive producer Rhett Reese,...

Part of the reason "Bones" lasted as long as it did was because of its unique blend of humor and drama. The show ran for 12 seasons, showcasing throughout an incongruous but somehow charming mix of humorous banter between its characters with some pretty horrific crime scenes and depraved serial killers. But while the humor and the horror were two separate elements, in a way the grotesque bodies on "Bones" were sort of part of the comedy.
Some of the fake corpses made for the show were beyond things you might see in an all-out horror film. There were fresh bodies on "Bones" that even went too far for the show's producers, and one particular body had Zack Addy actor Eric Millegan extra grossed out. These are just two examples from a show filled with some of the most absurdly detailed gore yet seen on a network show. There was even...

Bones was one of the more unique crime procedural shows that Fox ever aired. While there have been quite a few investigative thrillers focused on the cops and secret agents that solve crimes, Bones, which stars David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel, features a team of forensic anthropologists and FBI agents who examine deceased individuals in their postmortal state. Since Bones took a more scientific approach to its subject material, the series was able to avoid many of the storytelling clichs that had become common in other criminal investigation shows. However, that doesnt mean that Bones didnt feature a great rogues gallery of recurring villains that appeared throughout several episodes, and sometimes even entire seasons. Serial killer Christopher Pelant (Andrew Leeds) is among the most ruthless screen antagonists to ever haunt broadcast television, showing that the most gruesome content didn't necessarily have to air on specialty networks like HBO or FX.

Ghosts season 4 will introduce Jay's parents, but the new update features a caveat to their arrival. CBS' rising comedy based on the UK show of the same name is set to return with a full season after its shortened cycle due to the dual Hollywood strikes of 2023. With that, there are so many plots set to come to fruition, including several that have been previously set up. That includes an additional focus on Utkarsh Ambudkar's Jay Arondekar, the devoted and hilarious husband of Rose McIver's Sam.
In a new report from EW, it is emphasized that Jay's parents are indeed going to be introduced in Ghosts season 4. This storyline was previously announced during the show's San Diego Comic-Con 2024. Despite that, the roles of the Arondekar parents have yet to be cast. Whoever plays the pair will join Punam Patel and Andrew Leeds, as they also return as Jays...

For Seal Team‘s seventh and final season, Beau Knapp has joined the cast as the newest member of Bravo, Drew Franklin, who reluctantly (but necessarily) opens up about his past to the others in the latest episode. He spoke with TV Insider about that reveal as well as what’s to come, which includes being directed by series star and executive producer David Boreanaz in Episode 6 (dropping on Paramount+ on September 8). And with that moment, history repeats itself for Knapp. The actor guest starred on Bones, which starred Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel, in 2013, in the Season 8 finale, “The Secret in the Siege,” which was part of the Pelant (Andrew Leeds) arc. He played a suspect, Zane Reynolds, and he was also directed by Boreanaz in that episode. Michael Moriatis / Paramount+ “It was a trip,” Knapp recalled of his Bones guest spot to TV Insider. “It was 2013. Those are wild times.

A crime procedural called "Bones" was always going to involve some pretty grisly scenes. While the hit Fox series often kept things light, that didn't mean it held back when it came to depicting some truly gruesome and upsetting crime scenes. As John Francis Daley, who played Sweets, put it in a 2012 interview:
"Every episode there's something that makes me want to gag. But that's, I think, part of what makes the show successful is there's a morbid curiosity that everyone has, and to be able to combine horrific deaths and body parts with humor and light subjects is brilliant."
Throughout its 12-season run, "Bones" presented some surprisingly graphic scenes, particularly when it came to the dead bodies. One body, in particular, had Eric Millegan, who played Zack Addy, extra grossed out, while another gross bathtub scene had to be cut completely. Much of this was down to brothers Kevin and Chris Yagher,...

The Groundlings will host an improv musical fundraising event on Oct. 26, featuring Ana Gasteyer, Kristen Bell, Kristen Wiig and Will Forte. The event, held at the Performing Arts Center at Vista Del Mar, will benefit the Motion Picture & Television Fund to support below-the-line workers impacted by the strikes.
“One Night Only,” created and directed by Groundlings Main Company member Andrew Leeds, is a full production of a well-known Broadway musical. The catch? The improvisers are given the script and their roles only 24 hours in advance.
“These strikes have taken a terrible toll on our amazing crews, and it isn’t over yet. Even with the WGA strike ending, most crew members won’t be able to start work again until the SAG-AFTRA deal is ratified,” Leeds said in a statement. “Even then, many will be fighting to survive as they wait for productions to start back up.

SAG-AFTRA and Hollywood’s largest employers are wrestling over complicated contract proposals in a business turned inside-out by the transition from linear to streaming.
But some of what’s on the table isn’t so complicated. Some of the discord between labor and management that led SAG-AFTRA to go on strike on July 13 is rooted in money and the hard reality of making minimum rates in Hollywood.
SAG-AFTRA president Fran Drescher has vowed publicly that securing a hefty increase in minimum pay rates across the board is a deal-breaker issue for the union. Talk to any established working actor and it becomes clear why. Most of them say they’ve been dragged back to working for scale in a marketplace that has paid high-wattage stars record fees but put the squeeze on everyone else down the call sheet.

Deadline Strike Talk hits a dubious 12th week milestone today, with the business shut down and actors picketing alongside the writers. Host Billy Ray has put together another strong group of guests who put the plight of working actors in relatable and understandable terms. Joining are four actors, three of whom are on the SAG-AFTRA negotiating committee. Sarah Ramos’ credits include The Bear, Winning Time, and Parenthood; Shaan Sharma’s credits include The Chosen and Mr. Mercedes; Charles Bodin’s credits include Good Trouble, Halt and Catch Fire, and The Last Tycoon; and Andrew Leeds’s credits include Barry, The Patient, and Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.
What emerges from their talk is compelling evidence that the idea of a middle class for actors has been wiped away, and they cite one member who had decent speaking parts in 13 things, and still did not make the $26,000 or so needed to qualify for healthcare.

This article contains spoilers for the "Barry" series finale.
One of my favorite episodes of "The Sopranos" is "The Test Dream," in which Tony (James Gandolfini) falls asleep in a hotel room and has a surreal dream. Whenever "The Sopranos" needed to be especially foreboding, it went to dream sequences. Season 6 features a multi-episode one when Tony, in a coma and on death's door, has a vision of an alternate life for himself as a law-abiding middle-aged salesman. That's why when "Barry" started going surreal in season 3 — our eponymous protagonist (Bill Hader) saw himself standing on a beach alongside all his victims — my mind jumped to "The Sopranos."
The two HBO shows have more in common than you'd think, down to the same guiding question: can people change? "The Sopranos" is at its core about a man in therapy, a process that is supposed to help you reshape yourself. "Barry...

[This story contains major spoilers from the series finale of Barry, “Wow.”]
In the end, it wasn’t the Chechen mob or the FBI who finally took down the outlaw assassin Barry Berkman; it was (second spoiler warning!) Henry Winkler’s Gene M. Cousineau.
Of course, Cousineau thought he had already done this when he set up Barry’s arrest in the season three finale, but NoHo Hank (Anthony Carrigan) and Cristobal’s (Michael Irby) failed assassination attempt gave Barry the opportunity to escape prison and live on the lam for eight years with Sally (Sarah Goldberg) and their eventual son, John. Cousineau also believed he’d finally taken care of his Barry Berkman problem in the final season’s fourth episode when he fired his Rip Torn-gifted “prop gun” at whom he assumed was a vengeful Barry, but instead, he shot his son, Leo (Andrew Leeds), who was delivering takeout from Gene’s beloved Coral Tree Cafe to his secluded Big Bear cabin.

When last we left Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) and Sally Reed (Sarah Goldberg) on the HBO series "Barry," they were in great distress. (When has that ever not been true?) Barry and Sally have made a meager life for themselves and their son John (Zachary Golinger) in middle America for eight years, thanks to being in the FBI Witness Protection program after Barry revealed secrets of his time with the Chechen mob to get out of jail. They've reinvented themselves as Clark and Emily, a married couple that doesn't do much aside from home-schooling John, and working at a local diner. But Sally and Barry are both shocked to learn, via the Hollywood Reporter, that a) Warner Bros. is pursuing a biopic about Barry's life as a hitman/acting student and b) Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler) has come out of hiding after having shot his son Leo (Andrew Leeds) to purportedly consult on the film.

... Well then! If you've just watched tonight's episode of HBO's "Barry," entitled "it takes a psycho", then you know that for a show that is rarely screwing around, this episode really and truly did not screw around. If you haven't watched, just be warned (even more than usual) that surprises are plenty this week, so spoilers ahoy.
As you'll likely recall, last week's installment wrapped with Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) escaping prison thanks to a botched hit job (involving a hitman/podcaster played by Fred Armisen). So it's no surprise that this week starts in prison, as the grumpy warden (Richard Riehle) instigates a beatdown of Barry's old friend Monroe Fuches (Stephen Root), presuming the latter let the would-be assassins inside. Though Fuches did know about the attempt on Barry's life and tried to warn the now-infuriated guards, he of course has no idea where Barry might be at the moment.

This article contains massive spoilers for the latest episode of "Barry."
When Bill Hader and Alec Berg's HBO series "Barry" was first announced back in 2018, the show's identity was pitched somewhere between dark comedy and dramedy. Speaking to Vulture on the eve of the first season's release, Hader explained how he and Berg landed on placing their hitman protagonist inside a Los Angeles acting class because "we were struck by how much it felt like group therapy. We decided, 'Okay, Barry can realize things about himself through theater.'"
That's a more insightful observation than the average layman might realize — for anyone who's taken an acting class a little more advanced than high school level, these classes often resemble a bizarre sort of group therapy session more than anything else. Where one might expect to see discussions of scenes, characters, and craft, such classes have an unsettling tendency to...

The curtain is closing on Barry, HBO‘s dark comedy series about a hit man from the Midwest who moves to Los Angeles and falls in love with the stage. A new, full-length trailer for “Barry” Season 4 has arrived, offering a closer look at what to expect from the final eight episodes of the Emmy-winning half-hour series. Hader’s Barry is in jail following the Season 3 finale’s big sting operation, and we get glimpses of how those around Barry – Sally (Sarah Goldberg), Gene (Henry Winkler), Fuches (Stephen Root) and Hank (Anthony Carrigan) – are dealing with this new development.
“The guy I was dating in LA killed my acting teacher’s girlfriend,” Sally is heard saying in the trailer, followed by, “I think I might be in a lot of trouble.”
Barry is in jail, seen really laying it on himself as he deals with the consequences of his actions. Fuches is also in jail, and it appears as though he’s in the same prison as Barry.

Season three of HBO’s critically acclaimed, Emmy Award-winning Barry ended with Barry Berkman (Bill Hader) under arrest. The teaser trailer for season four confirms that while Barry is, in fact, behind bars, he remains at the heart of the story.

“Barry” is the latest critically acclaimed, Emmy-winning series to say those four little words: “Fourth and final season.” HBO’s dark comedy will end after its upcoming season, co-creator Bill Hader announced Tuesday in an interview with Variety. The news was accompanied by a premiere date – which comes surprisingly soon – and a teaser trailer.
The trailer picks up where Season 3 left off, with aspiring actor/professional hitman Barry Berkman (Hader) in prison after being lured into a trap by his acting teacher and mentor Gene Cousineau (Henry Winkler). In the teaser, Barry makes phone calls and sees visions of the people important to him. In one call, he breaks down as he tells someone he loves them. A new image from A Million Little Things season 5 hints at a major character's death. Slated to be the show's final outing, the official synopsis teases that viewers will experience both joy and sadness as the show's journey comes to a conclusion. Audiences will get one last chance to witness the depths of friendship, love, and sorrow before they say goodbye to the characters that they've come to know so well. Although the summary doesn't reveal anything specific about where A Million Little Things could be headed, the use of the word "sorrow" might prove to be especially instructive.

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers from “The Christmas Spirit,” Episodes 9 and 10 of “Ghosts” Season 2.
As is typical with a second season sitcom, CBS’ “Ghosts” has now gotten to try its hand at one of the hallmarks of the genre: the Christmas episode.
The two-part midseason finale “The Christmas Spirit” sees Sam (Rose McIver) and Jay (Utkarsh Ambudkar) host Jay’s sister Bela (Punam Patel) at their upstate New York mansion for Christmas. Bela surprises Sam and Jay when she shows up with her single and extremely eligible friend Eric (Andrew Leeds), but is quick to assure everyone (including a pained Eric) that there’s absolutely nothing romantically going on between them. But Sam, being a romantic and a Christmas fanatic, sets her heart on recreating her favorite holiday movies, and getting Bela to fall in love with Eric.

The Christmas spirit certainly got into Ghosts during Thursday’s special one-hour installment, in which Jay’s sister Bela arrived at Woodstone with her friend Eric (Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist‘s Andrew Leeds) to celebrate the holiday.
Being a big Christmas rom-com person, Single and Ready to Cringle fan Sam was determined to spark something romantic between Bela and Eric, who definitely had feelings for his pal. But Bela was still hung up on Trevor, who used Sam’s iPad to send a message to Bela with a crazy idea: get Eric to let Trevor possess him for just one...

It’s a cliché to say that a TV show has a “killer premise”, and it’s doubly clichéd to make that observation of a serial killer drama. And yet, it’s also the only way to describe The Patient, Disney Plus’s new 10-part serial, which has the Black Death of killer premises. A psychopathic murderer wants to fight the instinct to kill, and so enters therapy – but he can’t open up his tortured id without risking his freedom, so he kidnaps his therapist to keep him on hand for one long session.
Domhnall Gleeson is Sam, known to the police as the John Doe killer. He starts attending psychotherapy with the recently widowed Dr Alan Strauss (Steve Carell), wearing sunglasses and a baseball cap. But however much Sam might want to talk, his fear of capture holds him up – that is, until Alan wakes up in Sam...

You aren’t the only one who loves Hallmark Christmas movies! As we’ll see when CBS’ Ghosts decks the halls on December 15 in a festive two-parter, Sam (Rose McIver) is also a fan. She wants to play merry matchmaker when her sister-in-law Bela (Punam Patel) brings her hopelessly devoted platonic pal Eric (Andrew Leeds) to haunted Woodstone Mansion for the holidays. But jealous ’90s finance bro Trevor (Asher Grodman), who got his flirt on with Bela last season, and drama-loving Native Sasappis (Román Zaragoza) have a different plan we won’t spoil: “Things never go quite the way that Sam anticipates,” McIver says in an understatement, “but there is a happy ending of sorts.” While Viking Thorfinn (Devan Chandler Long) is the resident Scrooge — believing Christmas is an appropriation of his Norse culture — other ghosts definitely have the spirit. The hour is a big one for Revolutionary War captain...

Spoilers for "The Patient" follow
On October 25, 2022, "The Patient" concluded its 10-episode run. The mini-series tells the story of Dr. Alan Strauss (Steve Carrel), a therapist held captive by one of his patients, Sam Fortner (Domhnall Gleeson). It turns out Sam didn't disclose a pretty big detail during their sessions — he's a serial killer. As my /Film colleagues have said, serial killer stories have been done to death. To stand apart, "The Patient" adds a new wrinkle: Sam wants to stop killing. He's abducted Strauss not to murder him, but to be his in-house therapist. Early on, Alan tells Sam that anyone who's willing to go to therapy can be helped. The story is designed to test his thesis.
Due to the confined setting, the series relies on flashbacks to flesh out Alan. We learn how his relationship with his son Ezra (Andrew Leeds) fell apart after Ezra converted to Orthodox Judaism.
