After Sony’s recent Marvel misfires on 2022’s Morbius and this year’s Madame Web, I wasn’t holding out too much hope for yet another Marvel villain origin story when I headed to the press screening of Kraven the Hunter. Its shuffling around the release schedule didn’t give me much hope, and word spread from someone at a rival studio that the exhibitor screening didn’t go well, also dampening my hopes.
But I always try to go into a movie with an open mind, and in this case, although Kraven is a well-known villain in the comic book world and has popped up here and there, a starring movie wasn’t top of my list.
That said, I had a surprisingly good time with this ultraviolent R-rated telling of how a Russian kid, Sergei Kravinoff, grows up to become a fearsome hunter — not of animals, who he spiritually embraces,...

It’s hard to imagine the iconic movie Top Gun— helmed by Tony Scott—without the sizzling romance between Maverick and Charlie, played by Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis, respectively. The chemistry between the two characters added depth and emotional resonance to the high-flying action sequences, which the film is famous for.
Nevertheless, it may come as a surprise to learn that the romance between Maverick and Charlie was not originally a focal point of the first movie. In the original versions of Top Gun, the love story between Maverick and Charlie was much more subdued and not as prominently featured as it is in the final cut that audiences saw.

Top Gun is one of the most memorable ventures in Tom Cruise’s career. The film’s brilliant performances, the pathbreaking aerial action scenes, and the iconic soundtrack continue to captivate the fans to date.
Although the audiences were mostly hooked to the aerial action in the 1986 classic, the beach volleyball scene featuring Cruise and Val Kilmer is hailed as one of the most memorable scenes. Despite not adding much significance to the story, the scene continues to earn praise.

Surprisingly, when the volleyball scene was first shot, the heads at Paramount Studios were enraged. To be precise, the studio could not stand that the late Tony Scott devoted an entire day to the not-so-significant scene, and almost decided to fire the director.

Amy Adams as Gisele in Adam Shankman’s Disenchanted Photo: Disney There’s a legitimately good premise buried deep in the core of director Adam Shankman’s Disenchanted. One of the most memorable scenes in director Tony Scott's "Top Gun" is the shirtless volleyball game. Set to the upbeat Kenny Loggins song "Playing With the Boys," the sequence is about the simple joys of all-male sportsmanship, complete with slow-motion shots of the pilots' sculpted bodies glistening with sweat, and close-ups of their enthusiastic high-fives and butt slaps. It's a cheesy and homoerotic hallmark in pop culture. Many have mocked its exaggerated 1980s style, but more have defended its inclusion in the film. The camera ogles the young, virile military men with a lustful enthusiasm.
According to USA Today, the studio was not prepared for Scott to burn an entire day filming the scene, which was only a short paragraph in the script. Editor Chris Lebenzon says, "Tony shot it like a commercial, and they were angry." In the "Top Gun" home video release, Scott (who passed away...

Original Top Gun editor Chris Lebenzon is returning to work on Top Gun: Maverick. After 34 years, Lebenzon will bring some of the same editing magic he used in helping make the first installment an instant classic. Tom Cruise shocked San Diego Comic-Con last month with a surprise appearance and the first footage from the highly anticipated sequel. Long-time fans were pleasantly surprised with what they saw in the early footage, which leaned heavily on the past.
Chris Lebenzon earned his first Academy Award nomination for his work on 1986's Top Gun. Lebenzon and Billy Weber took on the editing of the first installment, which has been credited with introducing the "MTV-style editing" to movies. Tom Cruise and crew are trying to recapture as much of the original style from the first movie for Top Gun: Maverick. Woo Hoo! We’re girl-starved teen nerds, and we’re cooking up our own living sex toy with our home computers! John Hughes turns an infantile idea into one of his not-bad teen angst comedies, as Kelly LeBrock materializes to fulfill their wildest dreams. The idea is of course transformed into a basically benign coming-of age story … with the underlying message that we’d not all mind having Ms. LeBrock reformat our hard drive. It all begins as a bad arrested-development joke, but Hughes’ audaciousness and fine production values make this a nostalgic favorite for folk that miss their (ugh) 1980s memories.

Back in the summer of 1992, director Tim Burton unleashed his sequel to his hit take on Batman called Batman Returns. This underappreciated flick starred Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne / Batman, Danny DeVito as Oswald Cobblepot / The Penguin, and the fantastic Michelle Pfeiffer as Selina Kyle / Catwoman. If you remember in that movie, Pfeiffer brandishes a whip for all of our collective enjoyment and today it looks like the actress has found the old prop and - get this - still knows how to make it sing.
Michelle Pfeiffer recently took to her Instagram account to show off the whip saying, "Look what I found. Needs a little TLC." Then a bit later she shared a video of herself cracking the good old whip just like a femme fatale Indiana Jones. I don't know about you, but this is pure joy for me considering that not only was Michelle Pfeiffer one of my first crushes,...

At CinemaCon, Disney finally addressed the elephant in the room.
And no, we’re not referring to the super-secret title to Avengers 4, or the whereabouts of one Clint Barton, but Tim Burton’s live-action Dumbo movie, which is shaping up to be every bit as adorable as we’d come to expect.
How do we know? While delivering a preview of its live-action fairytales, the Mouse House offered a sneak peek at that little grey elephant with the oversized ears, and he looks incredible. Those in attendance were also treated to some footage of Eva Green, Michael Keaton, Danny DeVito and Colin Farrell moseying their way through Tim Burton’s stylized circus.
Currently incubating in post-production ahead of its arrival next year, Dumbo was screened alongside fellow live-action remakes like Aladdin and The Lion King, though Burton’s reimagining arguably stole the show on cuteness alone.

The latest adaptation of fantasy children literature, Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, blends a potpourri of other denizens of the genre—most notably the Harry Potter series, but also The Golden Compass. It even borrows generously even from comic books, with the titular young ones serving as a sort of top ten weirdest X-Men list. The film itself, directed by Tim Burton, is impeccably crafted and pretty entertaining despite its obvious derivativeness—it has all the trappings of some of his better films. But a wandering third act make the finished product somewhat disappointing.
We begin with young Jake Portman, played by a maturing Asa Butterfield (Ender’s Game), who has a close-knit relationship with his eccentric grandfather Abraham (Terence Stamp). In a rather violent opening sequence Jake witnesses Abraham killed by a large critter with long extremities and a penchant for eye-gouging. Distraught, and disbelieved by all...

The American Cinema Editors (Ace) handed out the 2013 Eddie Awards last night and the race didn't change too much, that is unless you were confused as to who the two primary front-runners heading into next Sunday's Oscars were. Argo (edited by William Goldenberg, A.C.E.) and Silver Linings Playbook (edited by Jay Cassidy, A.C.E. and Crispin Struthers) won Best Edited Feature Film (Dramatic) and Best Edited Feature Film (Comedy/Musical) respectively. Brave won in the Animated category while presumptive Best Documentary winner, Searching for Sugar Man won in the Documentary category. Of course, just to keep things interesting and ensure "Team Lincoln" didn't go home entirely empty handed, Steven Spielberg received the Ace Golden Eddie Filmmaker of the Year honor presented to him by longtime collaborator and friend Kathleen Kennedy. I've already updated the Oscar Overture with the wins for Argo and Silver Linings as the path...

There isn't really too much else to say about the noms considering in previous years these nominations came out before the Oscar nominations were announced giving reason to speculate on which of the several films would end up nominated for Oscars. Part of the Tony Scott: A Moving Target critical project. Go here for the project's description, index and links to project's other movement.
To the overabundance of text, sounds, images—and moving images—in Tony Scott, we reply with something like our own. So let me (try to) keep this (almost as) short as a Tony Scott shot. Scott’s death this past summer would elicit film critics’ own counterpart to American politics: opinions and generalizations bandied between two camps who were, as always, preaching to their respective choirs. And needless to say, such discourses would be about as useful, informative, and interesting as American politics. For Scott’s work was hardly encamped: the outward liberalism of Enemy of the State, perhaps Hollywood’s most overt attack on our surveillance nation and the Nsa, possible only before 9/11, concludes that only Nsa aspirants can take down the Nsa, just as Man on Fire,...

To me, this idea that the joy Tony Scott took in directing came from a curiosity and thirst for life seems essential to watching his films. What is cinema if not a window through which to touch worlds we’ve never touched before? What if Scott’s maximalist mise-en-scene, his persistent attempt–through sophisticated montage–to fit the utmost information in the frame, was the only way he knew how to express the combination of fear, adrenaline, and joy that he was always chasing (whether making films or climbing mountains)? Let’s remember what he said of the characters in Domino, “always chasing the dark side of life,...

In the late 1970s and 1980s, composer Giorgio Moroder was often accused of trying to replace the orchestral movie soundtrack with high-energy, synthesizer-heavy disco pop laid on with a trowel in movies like Thank God It’s Friday (1978), Flashdance (1983), Scarface (1983), and Top Gun (1986). I remember a magazine story on Moroder which quoted one of his many critics as saying, “The day the music died, Giorgio Moroder was brought in for questioning.”
I think some people had the same opinion about movies and Tony Scott. Full disclosure: I’m one of them. But it would be greatly unfair to Scott, who apparently committed suicide Sunday after being diagnosed with inoperable brain cancer, not to admit that, for good or for ill, his 1980s feature work had an enormous impact on commercial filmmaking.

Over the weekend the American Cinema Editors (Ace) held their annual awards, where The Social Network, Alice in Wonderland and Toy Story 3 took honors for feature editing in the dramatic, comedy/musical and animated categories. But the highlight of the night may have been the lifetime achievement award given to Michael Kahn, presented by Steven Spielberg. That award was accompanied by a reel highlighting the master editor's many credits, and in the spirit of celebrating someone who has been an invaluable but often invisible contributor to many of the films we love, we present the highlight reel after the break. Mr. Kahn's long collaboration with Steven Spielberg dominates this reel, but there are a handful of other major films represented here, too. The fact that one man has been instrumental to so many major films of the last forty years is simply staggering. (With respect to that collaboration with Steven Spielberg,...

Tim Burton's 'Frankenweenie' will be a "sensitive movie". The eccentric director is currently working on the feature length version of his 1984 short film about a pet owner who manages to bring his dead dog back to life after he is hit by a car and Tim's long-time collaborator Chris Lebenzon is excited about the project. He said: "We are storyboarding 'Frankenweenie'. It is a very sensitive movie, it speaks to a lot of our childhood fantasies. The theme is the same - the boy brings his dog back to life. In this one he gets the idea from a certain place, he has a lot of friends who do the same thing, they're in a big contest. I think it has grown to be more of a feature world." The movie will star Oscar-winning actor Martin Landau, Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara and Winona Ryder as the voice of Elsa.

Though I've read a truly great book on the topic "The Conversations", know a few editors, and have experimented with this completely fascinating craft in college, this morning when I woke up, I learned that I must have literally no idea what it means. The American Cinema Editor's Guild pulled the rug out by naming Tim Burton's Eyesore in Wonderland the best edited of all comedies in 2010. I realize that my hatred for the movie is self-feeding, ever-growing and thus deeply irrational but still... I watched it in full and all I saw was interminable rhythmless agonizing ugly incoherence.
