In gearing up for today’s 30th anniversary of “The X-Files” premiere, which debuted back on September 10, 1993, I recently re-watched the series finale, titled “The Truth.” Yes, I know Fox’s sci-fi show later spawned two revival seasons in 2016 and 2018, but I’m still calling this episode, which aired on May 19, 2002, the official series finale. When “The Truth” originally aired, fans and critics alike were decidedly mixed on the two-part ender written and directed by series creator Chris Carter. But 21 years later, I can safely say that it’s better than you remember.
Scroll through the videos and photos below revisiting the nine best moments from “The X-Files” series finale, which featured the return of Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) as he went on trial for murdering an alien super soldier, while Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) and Walter Skinner (Mitch Pileggi) tried to secure his release. Few TV shows have had the seismic impact of The X-Files – with its swirling mysteries, long-running conspiracies, and shocking monster-of-the-week episodes. Factor in the legendary roles of Mulder and Scully (the incredible David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson) and you have the recipe for a multiple-decade-spanning phenomenon, that began on the small screen, moved to the big one (twice), and was revived for two additional series just when fans thought it was all over. Packed with alien encounters, supernatural shenanigans, and moments of very human horror, the show – spawned by Chris Carter – brought audiences into a world where you never quite knew what the next episode would bring.
30 years later, the impact of The X-Files hasn’t been diluted – and throughout its reign on big screens and small, Empire spoke to several of its key voices. Take a rifle through the X-Files Interview Archive…

Brace yourselves, “The X-Files” fans: your favorite TV show is turning 30 years old. Yep, it’s true. Fox’s Emmy-winning sci-fi juggernaut that followed FBI Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) in their investigations into the paranormal debuted on September 10, 1993. Nine complete seasons aired until the series finale on May 19, 2002, with two movies premiering at the box office in 1998 and 2008, and then two additional revival seasons dropping in 2016 and 2018. All told, a whopping 218 episodes were produced for television — think of all those discarded cigarette butts! Mike Flanagan is set to leave Netflix, but he has one last October horror treat for the streamer. “The Fall of the House of Usher,” Flanagan’s Edgar Allen Poe-inspired limited series, will premiere October 12, Netflix announced Thursday.
Titled after an 1839 short story from famous gothic writer Poe and based upon it and several of his other works, “The Fall of the House of Usher” focuses on the titular Usher family, led by ruthless siblings Roderick (Bruce Greenwood) and Madeline Usher (Mary McDonnell), who have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into an empire of wealth, privilege and power. But past secrets come to light when the heirs to the Usher dynasty start dying at the hands of a mysterious woman from their youth.

Mike Flanagan has already moved on from the Netflix streaming service, as his company Intrepid Pictures has secured a multi-year deal with Amazon’s Prime Video… but we still have one more Flanagan Netflix series to see. Following in the footsteps of The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, Midnight Mass, and The Midnight Club is the Edgar Allan Poe-inspired limited series The Fall of the House of Usher – and today, Netflix announced that the eight-episode series will be available to watch as of Thursday, October 12th! Along with that announcement comes the unveiling of multiple first look images and a poster for the show, and you can check all of those out at the bottom of this article.
Here’s the set-up for Poe’s story The Fall of the House of Usher: Roderick Usher and his sister Madeline are the only two surviving members of the aristocratic Usher family.

Netflix’s “The Fall of the House of Usher,” the latest series from horror staple Mike Flanagan, finally has a release date. The eight-episode limited series will premiere October 12.
Adapted from the short story of the same name by Edgar Allen Poe, this version follows siblings Roderick and Madeline Usher, two “ruthless” forces who have built Fortunato Pharmaceuticals into a massive financial empire. But when secrets from the past come back to haunt them, the members of this powerful family will start to fall all thanks to “a mysterious woman from their youth,” according to a press release for the series.
“It’s bats–t crazy in the best possible way. It has quite a lot of very dark humor, but also really touches the soul,” series star and regular Flanagan collaborator Carla Gugino told Tudum in an on-set interview last year.

Netflix has slated Thursday, October 12, for the premiere of The Fall of the House of Usher, its eight-episode limited series from Mike Flanagan based on the works of Edgar Allan Poe. The streamer also released some of the first images of the series, which you can see above and below.
Starring Bruce Greenwood, who replaced Frank Langella as the lead back in April 2022 after Langella was fired following a misconduct investigation, the series is described as an epic tale of greed, horror and tragedy. Poe’s short story The Fall of the House of Usher, which serves as the basis for the show, features themes of madness, family, isolation and identity.
It’s been a long road for the series, which was halfway through production when Langella was fired and his scenes had to be reshot.

It’s the cast and creatives of The X-Files like you’ve never seen (or heard) them before. The group reunited recently to record a special version of the show’s previously instrumental-only theme song for a charity video benefiting the World Central Kitchen.
The “Song in the Key of X” video, done remotely, includes actors David Duchovny (Fox Mulder), Mitch Pileggi (Walter Skinner), Robert Patrick (John Doggett), Annabeth Gish (Monica Reyes), Nicholas Lea (Alex Krycek), and William B. Davis (Cigarette Smoking Man), as well as creator Chris Carter, writer/director/executive producer Vince Gilligan, writer/director/consulting producer Darin Morgan, and writer/director/co-ep James Wong. (You’ll have to watch the video to see where Scully pops in). Lyrics were written by fans Jennifer Large and Rebecca MacDonald.
“The unforgettable theme to The X-Files had no lyrics. Until now,” the spot’s title card reads at the beginning of the video.

Cast and creatives of series “The X-Files,” including David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, have reunited virtually to record a special version of the show’s famous theme tune, with fan-written lyrics, to benefit the World Central Kitchen.
“The X-Files” series executive producer Frank Spotnitz’s desire to help the needy during the ongoing coronavirus pandemic saw him devise a challenge for “The X-Files” fans to write bespoke lyrics for the show’s instrumental theme tune. The winning tune was written by fans Jennifer Large and Rebecca McDonald.

The signpost ahead reads “The Twilight Zone,” ushering viewers to a realm that at once feels familiar and yet is almost entirely new. Executive producers Jordan Peele and Simon Kinberg have reimagined Rod Serling’s classic horror/science-fiction/fantasy series from the ‘60s for a whole new generation.
At an event in Hollywood this year, Kinberg revealed why it was the perfect time to bring back the show. “I think the world all of a sudden was in desperate need of ‘The Twilight Zone,’” he said. ‘If you said three, four years ago that like a reality star who had no political experience will be the leader of the free world with access to the nuclear button, you think that’s a crazy ‘Twilight Zone’ episode.”
Kinberg also said that the vision Peele and CBS All Access had meshed with how to tell stories while pushing it to the limits.

[Originally appeared in Deadly Magazine #5] In 1993, The X-Files premiered on Fox, forever changing genre television, and after 20 years, its influence is still felt. No series since The X-Files has even come close to creating such incredibly nuanced and compelling storytelling than what Chris Carter’s series delivered each week for nine seasons.
What made The X-Files so remarkable was that it hit the ground running from its first episode and maintained that momentum. While Seasons 8 and 9 aren’t remembered fondly by fans, I’d argue that the storytelling still remained strong until the series finale in May 2002.
Known generally for its overarching alien and governmental conspiracy plots, The X-Files always managed to find clever and unusual ways to celebrate so many horror and sci-fi tropes, much like its predecessors (The Twilight Zone and Kolchak: The Night Stalker influenced Carter when he was first conceiving the series in the early ’90’s.)

[Originally appeared in Deadly Magazine #5] For nine seasons (and two feature films), fans of The X-Files became engrossed with FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully’s search for the truth and along the way, we were introduced to numerous supporting characters that helped them (or did their damnedest to foil their efforts) along the way. Here’s a look back at some of The X-Files’ greatest unusual suspects.
Deep Throat (Jerry Hardin)
Mulder’s first informant when the X-Files division of the FBI was established. A member of The Syndicate who wanted to expose some of the secrets the government had tried desperately to keep hidden, Deep Throat was tragically gunned down while trading an alien embryo for Mulder’s life in the first season finale, “The Erlenmeyer Flask.”

As far as TV reunions go, few have stirred up as much as much excitement as the return of Mulder and Scully. Yep, David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson are back fighting the good the fight against conspiracies, the supernatural, and whatever else you got in the forthcoming "The X-Files" miniseries, and this new teaser gives a peek at what's coming. Chris Carter is back and pulling the strings for the new six-episode jaunt, about which plot details are still somewhat guarded. However, there will be a lot of familiar faces — William B. Davis, Mitch Pileggi, Annabeth Gish, Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, Bruce Harwood and Nicholas Lea — with some fresh blood in the mix including Joel McHale, Lauren Ambrose, Robbie Amell and Rhys Darby. "The X-Files" is back on January 24, 2016. I want to believe.... [Empire] Update: Fox has just dropped the full length trailer. Watch below.

Of all the notable film and television projects that are due to arrive in 2016, it is safe to say that The X-Files event series is among the most highly anticipated. Thankfully, with a premiere date set for January, the wait will not be overly torturous – but 20th Century Fox still likes to tease. Having already set the tone with a number of tiny snippets previously released, the most recent episodes of Gotham and Minority Report saw the debut of a pair of trailers for The X-Files (presented together, above), which took an innovative episodic approach.
Trailer one is the weaker of the two, because it incorporates a somewhat cheesy voiceover introduction from Agent Mulder. This is clearly designed to get the necessary exposition out of the way, and bring everyone up to speed. The X-Files is over twenty years old, after all, so there’s a whole new generation of viewers waiting to be enthralled.

Following on from a very brief clip earlier in the year, two new promos for the revival of The X-Files aired during shows on the Fox network across the pond on Monday night. Check them out below and lower down the page. The miniseries picks up with David Duchovny's Mulder and Gillian Anderson's Scully in very different places in their lives, but still committed to finding the truth behind the big conspiracies that have plagued them. But there’s also time to investigate other mysteries, too... And yes, there are definitely going to be appearances by old favourites such as William B. Davis' Cigarette Smoking Man, despite his seeming death by giant bloomin’ missile in the series finale back in 2002. And the likes of Mitch Pileggi, Annabeth Gish, Tom Braidwood, Dean Haglund, Bruce Harwood and Nicholas Lea are all back in some fashion. Mostly it seems like...

Bad Boy Roy goes out smashing stuff and hurting folk. Is killing him the only way to stop him? And a terrible loss hits the Arrow family.
So, once again, Arrow has broken me. I’m really just not built for this high level of crushing despair. This is why I am not a Game of Thrones fan. But instead of curling up with my teddy bear and screaming, “why why why?” I will do what I can to recap the trauma we all just went through.
Bad Boy Roy wakes up from his coma with a serious case of the cray-cray. I am truly and sincerely not in love with this plot. We barely got any shirtlessness to have fun with him before he went down the path of the Dark Side.
Moira’s plans to conquer the city are progressing nicely. She is now ahead in the polls.

In a bit of surprising news, it sounds like AMC and Seth Rogen are working on an adaptation of Garth Ennis‘ comic Preacher. So far, Preacher has turned out to be a challenging comic to adapt — an attempt to turn it into a film and another to make an HBO series fizzled. Still, its fans are passionate about it, and I would guess there are probably a lot of Preacher fans who also read The Walking Dead.
Radio Times surveyed readers to ask their favorite Doctor and companions. David Tennant came in first while Rose was picked as favorite companion, making me question their judgement. (Captain Jack came in seventh — ahead of Martha Jones, Rory Williams, K-9 and current companion Clara Oswald).
Come on, Whovians, how can you prefer the entitled one?

Falling in love with TV shows is a wonderful feeling. There’s the rush of tingling excitement over each new episode. Earlier this year, Syfy debuted the first season of the Canadian sci-fi series Continuum and I fell head over heels. I loved the idea of a time-traveling series with the heroine stuck in our present day trying to get back to her future and having to keep her identity a secret. There was a sense that everything could be snatched away from her for a second time as she struggled to maintain some kind of life as a police officer and making tentative friends and allies. So as we followed Detective Kiera Cameron (Rachel Nichols), we grew more immersed in her intriguing world straddling the police department dilemmas with her partner Det. Carlos Fonnegra (Victor Webster) and her attempts to find a way home with the aid of a young teen super-genius,...

We’ve got questions, and you’ve (maybe) got answers! With another week of TV gone by, we’re lobbing queries left and right about shows including The Killing, The Newsroom, The Fosters and Suits!
1 | You kinda wanted The Killing‘s Holder and Linden to kiss there on the sofa, didn’t you? Also, was there any way to predict that malevolent little twist of having Nicholas Lea’s supportive, deeply religious death-row inmate Dale turn out to be the nastiest little sociopath the show has ever seen?
2 | In Falling Skies‘ highly entertaining “flashback-but-not” sequence, who was your favorite out-of-place character?...

As bleak as the future (or the prospect of returning to it) may seem for Continuum‘s Kiera Cameron, it shines that brightly for Rachel Nichols. Because just as Season 2 of the sci-fi series premieres Stateside on Syfy (Friday at 10/9c), Season 3 has already been greenlit (up north).

After a mind-bending, exhilarating and truly fantastic first season, the Syfy series Continuum is roaring towards its jaw-dropping finale. In a recent press conference call, stars Rachel Nichols, Victor Webster and executive producer Simon Barry talked about the ramifications of all the secrets, shifting alliances and the effects of Liber8’s activities on the timeline and Kiera’s future.
Even though he’s only known her maybe a month, Carlos knows that Kiera lies to him at times. What do you think it is about her that makes Carlos trust her?
Victor: She gets the job done. She may not be completely truthful, but I believe that she’s doing it for confidentiality reasons and she’s not allowed to disclose information to me through Section 6 and what she says she’s going to do she does. I may not agree with the means by which she does them but her results speak for themselves.

I’m Gonna Wreck It: Sweeney’s Latest a Meek Exercise In Neo Noir
Canadian filmmaker Bruce Sweeney returns with his latest, Crimes of Mike Recket, a police procedural neo-noir black comedy that attempts to use the current economic crises as impetus for a good guy turned bad scenario, one who makes poor moves to rectify his mounting debt. There’s a certain degree of playfulness at work here, with Sweeney giving us a rehash of those old B noir narratives from the forties and fifties, replete with a protagonist making unbelievably dumb decisions to fix his current economic situation. But despite this and all around enjoyable performances, there’s simply not much to get worked up about in this tale that ends up being more derivative than it perhaps meant to be.

Crimes of Mike Reket
Directed by Bruce Sweeney
2012, Canada, 80 minutes
Intelligent and uncomfortable comedy is so rare at the box office anymore—or so rarely talked about, anyway. Crimes of Mike Reket fits into that mould. Not well, though—this film doesn’t fit into any one mould very well, and I mean that in a good way. Aside from being darkly funny in an absurd manner, Bruce Sweeny’s newest film is also a whodunit undone, a cop film distinctly soft boiled, and an emotional drama that is palatably unfunny. Contradictory? Certainly. The neat thing is, though, it works.
One of the best things about Crimes of Mike Reket is that it is inoffensively but identifiably Canadian. This is what I mean: too many Canadian films (and TV series, and books, and songs . . .) approach ‘being Canadian’ in a Dudley Do-Right, maple syrup-caricature sort of way. It’s either that,...

In the last major update for the Toronto International Film Festival 2012 slate, they’ve announced their Canadian features. The line-up includes Sarah Polley’s upcoming documentary Stories We Tell, coming off her Take This Waltz this summer (which also premiered at Tiff). The other major films include two we’ve seen at Cannes, one being Brandon Cronenberg‘s Antiviral, which premiered alongside his father’s Cosmopolis. We disliked it (full review), saying it came off as an “an amateurish, high-budget student film.” The other major title is Xavier Dolan‘s Laurence Anyways, which we loved (full review), calling it a major step forward for the filmmaker. Check out the rest of the titles below, which I’m sure will include many discoveries.
Antiviral Brandon Cronenberg, Canada/USA North American Premiere

Apparently the Philadelphia Experiment was “based on actual events”. Yeah, that’s the ticket. I’m sure the military tried something wacky like this. They’re known for that. But did it actually result in time travel? Uh, that’s probably a bit of a stretch. In any case, check out the trailer for the Syfy Channel’s remake of 1984′s “The Philadelphia Experiment”. A secret government research project tries reviving the World War II “Philadelphia Experiment,” an attempt to create a cloaking device to make warships invisible. When the experiment succeeds, it brings back the original ship (the Eldridge) that disappeared during the first test in 1943. Starring Malcolm McDowell, Nicholas Lea, Syfy Channel regular Gina Holden, and Michael Pare, the star of the 1984 original. Coming to Syfy July 28, 2012.

Supernatural took viewers back to 1944 last Friday, paying tribute to The Untouchables and airing a generally fun episode.
What did our Round Table team of Carissa Pavlica, Kate Moon and Sean McKenna think of the time travel? What were their favorite scenes? Read the Q&A below and chime in with your take on these questions...
--------------------------------
What was your favorite scene or quote from the episode?
Carissa: The repeated references Dean made about the Untouchables, down to "I'm never watching that movie again." Still makes me laugh.
Kate: I found Dean and Sam's banter about anime hilarious. It is an underrated "art" form. Looking for more anime... or are you strictly into Dick now?
Sean: I loved all the Untouchables references as well. It was hilarious watching Dean try to fit in and everyone looking at him like he was crazy. The Chicago Way? Who talks like that?

Themes about family continue to fill out ABC's "Once Upon a Time." Like last week's Rumpelstiltskin tale, this week's episode centers on a father and his family. In the fairytale realm, Hansel and Gretel's happy family life is disrupted when their father (Nicholas Lea) mysteriously vanishes in the woods. The Evil Queen (Lana Parilla), more than happy to endanger children to fulfill her plans, quickly conscripts them to steal a package for her from a blind witch. A blind witch who just happens to live in a magic cottage made of candy. The children accidentally waken the blind witch, and she decides they will make a tasty meal for her. But they escape, stuffing her in her own oven on their way out. Watching through her magic mirror, the Evil Queen finishes off the witch herself. Hansel ...

While "Once Upon a Time" is fast becoming known for its original twists on classic fairytales, the fantasy show generally erred on the side of tradition when it came to tackling Hansel and Gretel in this week's episode. Sure, the blind witch (played by "Buffy" alum Emma Caulfield) was more of a looker than we might remember, but the oven and the gingerbread house were picture perfect ... after all, why tamper with the classics?
Still, all roads lead back to The Evil Queen (henceforth known as "Teq") in Fairytale Land, and in this week's story, she was the one who sent the twins into the sticky lair of her cannibalistic rival, all to retrieve an infamous red apple. I must admit, I love the idea of warring witches who...

Supernatural fans got a fun-filled filler episode in “Time After Time”. While the episode was light on action and Leviathan references, the humorous dialogue didn’t skip a beat.
Here are some of our favorite moments in no particular order.
Cartoon Smut
Since Bobby (Jim Beaver) died, Dean (Jensen Ackles) has been obsessed with looking at news clips of Dick Roman (James Patrick Stuart) online. But, do you know one of Dean’s other obsessions? Sam (Jared Padalecki) does. Sam said to Dean that he hoped his big brother was watching “cartoon smut” and not torturing himself with more Dick Roman stalking.
Dean closed down his laptop, hiding the Roman images, and said, “It’s called anime and it’s an art form.”

Director: Phil Sgriccia.
Writer: Robbie Thompson.
Ever since CW’s "Supernatural" decided to toss time-travel into its formula, the episodes have generally been very good. And Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) is often beside himself with glee. He gets to visit eras that he’s very fond of. Last year, the episode “Frontierland” took him to the Wild West and this year it’s “Time After Time After Time” where he ends up in the mid 40’s.
Despite all the time-travelling episodes he’s been in, Dean has yet to learn that everything he sees at the movies is not 100% true. That makes for some great hilarious moments because everyone from the past thinks he has gone bonkers. Nobody talks like that (much) or behaves like how Dean thinks they should.
Not even Eliott Ness (Nicholas Lea, "X-Files") thinks Dean is in the right. But at least they are fellow Hunters.

The past has never looked so good. After previous treks to the '70s and the Old West, this week "Supernatural" took another leaf out of the "Back to the Future" playbook and sent Dean all the way to 1944, where he got to hunt in a whole new era with old-school G-Man Eliot Ness (played with serious swagger by Nicholas Lea), the founder of The Untouchables. It was an unabashedly fun episode, which allowed the audience to get swept up in Dean's giddy enthusiasm for the time period and the man he was working with.

Supernatural Review, Season 7, Episode 12: “Time After Time After Time”
Written by Robbie Thompson
Directed by Phil Sgriccia
Airs Fridays at 9pm (Et) on the CW
This week, on Supernatural: Paper beats rock, Sheriff Jody Mills returns, and Dean gets his Untouchables on.
Supernatural has a fine tradition of time travel episodes. They’ve used the device several times, almost entirely to great success. They’ve travelled backwards, forwards, looped; they met their parents twice, hung out with Samuel Colt, and now, after accidentally hitching a ride with Chronos, God of Time, Dean gets to go Hunting with Eliot Ness. Unlike last week’s unfortunately paced episode, “Time After Time After Time” balances its serial and standalone elements well, focusing on the case of the week, or more accurately, Dean’s trip to 1940s Land, while touching lightly upon the overarching storyline.

This Friday on Supernatural (The CW, 9/8c), Dean is sent back to 1944 by the God of Time, and we’ve got an exclusive first look at Veronica Mars alum/recurring Ringer teach Jason Dohring as the time-shifting culprit!
