Underneath all that flashy Shaw Brothers production standards, this was essentially a rushed and cashed in “B” grade road adventure drama from Ho Meng Hua. Released at the same time as Jimmy Wang Yu’s “Master of the Flying Guillotine” this was pretty much a knockoff of his own hit “The Flying Guillotine” (1975) starring Chen Kuan Tai. Nonetheless, it crashed at the box office during its short run while Jimmy’s guillotine clone won the hearts of many fans and attracted a cult following.

A tradition going back centuries, countless stories of objects, most notably books and other dark tomes, have been claimed to be made of human skin, a practice that was reportedly accomplished by Ed Gein who made a lampshade of human skin. However, the real-life inspirations for such gruesome antics might not have been at the center of planning for this gruesome kung-fu/horror hybrid from the Shaw Brothers.

Guest reviewer Lee Broughton offers an assessment of one of the Shaw Brothers’ quirkier and more idiosyncratic historical martial arts efforts: an action-packed Meng Hua Ho wuxia flick from 1976 that concerns an irredeemable killer sent on a mission to save the life of a despicable and hated tyrant. Outstanding fight choreography, unusual weaponry and unpredictable plot twists help make this frenetically paced show a winner.

In the midst of their creative output, the Shaw Brothers studio was working on all cylinders offering films of all manner of genres, and by the 1980s they managed to start exploring with a mixture of such genres. While certainly not the first effort to do so, ‘Bloody Parrot’ finds the studio bringing together their two signature styles in wuxia-style martial arts with gross-out black magic horror into a potent and delirious blend.
Legend has it the mysterious Bloody Parrot appears on Earth during the Devil King’s birthday and will grant the finder three wishes. This causes numerous adventurers, including Yeh Ting-feng (Jason Pai Piao, from “Killer Constable”) into the search for it, as he initially teams with Constable Tieh Han (Tony Liu, from “Clan of Amazons”) to track it down. This journey leads them to Pei Yu (Jenny Liang, from “Bewitched”) who works as a prostitute at a...

He's currently starring in Star Wars: Rogue One, but there are some fascinating horrors to be found in Donnie Yen's back catalogue...
After his recent show-stealing turn in Rogue One, it felt like the right time to write a little about Donnie Yen, one of my favourite actors. From his incendiary breakthrough performance in Tiger Cage (1988) to the acclaimed Ip Man trilogy (2009 - 2016), Yen's body of work has earned him a reputation as one of the all-time greatest martial arts stars and action choreographers. His high-energy blend of fighting styles has been hugely influential on the genre both in the east and west, and his charismatic performances have kept him popular with fans for decades.
However, while his kung fu films have been written about extensively, there's not quite as much about his brief forays into my other favourite genre: horror. He's arguably been on...

“Mrs. K” rocked the 27th Singapore International Film Festival (Sgiff) last November 27, 2016. Hitting the special presentation at Capitol Theater was Hong Kong martial arts super star and Mrs. K heroine herself Kara Wei. Fans couldn’t get enough of Kara Wei (known for her thrilling turns in “My Young Auntie” (1982), “Rain Dogs” (2006), “At The End of Daybreak” (2009), and “Rigor Mortis” (2014)) specially since this is the iconic actress’ farewell film. Mrs. K‘s Writer-director Ho Yuhang, Taiwanese rocker Wu Bai, and Malaysian newcomer Siow Li Xuan also graced the red carpet.

When I think of Wu Xia movies, I immediately think of Shaw Brothers and the many classic they have made over the years. What I love about this genre is many things, the Swordplay, The Characters, Story lines, Setting, Costumes and much more.
Wu Xia, traditionally is a form of literature. But after high demand over the years it’s become involoved in many art forms such as Movies, Opera, Video Games and beyond. This list of 30 Wu Xia movies listed, i hope you’ll like and want to thank my friend Richard Robinson for contributing to the list. If we missed any classics out, its most probably because we honestly forgot at that time or maybe we haven’t seen all the classic Wu Xia movies so far, anyway enjoy the list and let us know what you thought in the commen box at the bottom.

Hong Kong, 1982
There is an exciting element of risk whenever creative minds willfully choose to go against the grain. Directors, writers and actors, when feeling adventurous, can attempt to defy the expectations by involving themselves in a picture that few would have expected them to ever partake in. Occasionally an entire studio may see fit to shake things up a bit in order to give audiences a fresh outlook on their image. Shaw Brothers certainly was not entirely limited to creating strictly martial arts and wuxia adventure films set in historical Chinese periods. There are a few examples of more drama and horror-centric efforts, but genre blending as exercised by director Sung Chung in his 1982 film, Human Lanterns, was certainly uncommon from the famed studio.
Lung Shu Ai (Liu Yung) and Tan Fu (Chen Kuan Tai) are long standing rivals.

Jackie Chan is the subject of a fantastic article on celebrity charity giving in Forbes Asia Magazine.
“Fame has transformed Chan into one of Asia’s premier philanthropists,” reads the article, by Ron Gluckman. "Others may give more or get more attention, but probably nobody works harder for more causes than Chan. ‘Every time we ask him to do an event, he agrees without any question,’ says Anthony Lau, director of the Hong Kong Tourism Board. Chan has been the face of everything from no-smoking campaigns to cleanup efforts. Lau recalls requesting the star’s appearance in Japan two years ago. Chan was working in remote China but flew 30 hours straight to the event. “The next day, he made the journey back—another 30 hours.”
“Chan has always regretted his lack of a formal education. So when he launched the Jackie Chan Charitable Foundation in 1988, it offered scholarships and other help to young people.
