- Spoke French, Italian and Spanish.
- Larner served in the Korean War with the U.S. Army, and spent time in Algeria during the French-Algerian War; after his discharge, he studied film at the Sorbonne University in Paris.
- Larner taught film at UCLA: one of his students included Jim Morrison, frontman for The Doors.
- In 1997, Larner and his wife bought property near Solvang, California, in the Santa Ynez Valley of California, where they began selling grapes to wine producers under the Larner Vineyard label. In 2005, while looking for the family cat in the vineyard, Larner's ATV crashed and went into a rollover; he died a week later.
