It’s the Rani. It’s always the Rani. Even when it definitely isn’t the Rani, well, it’s secretly the Rani.
That’s the running gag in the Doctor Who fandom every time it’s called upon to speculate about who or whatever is behind Something Mysterious and Evil happening on the show. If it’s not the Master, then it’s malevolent Time Lady the Rani. Monsters stealing time, cracks in the universe, milk going off even when kept in an adequately refrigerated container? It’s naughty scientist the Rani (even though it very rarely is).
As played by Kate O’Mara in season 22 and season 24, the character is a classic but little-seen Who villain whose reappearance on TV fans live both in eager anticipation and utter dread of. Four-part 1987 story “Time and the Rani” you see, is not popular.

Ncuti Gatwa’s first series of Doctor Who is almost here – and to remind us of this, the BBC have released a full trailer.
If there’s one thing to take away from the trailer for the new series, it is this – Russell T Davies is putting every penny of the higher budget up on the screen.
With the premiere of Ncuti Gatwa’s debut series just weeks away, the marketing campaign is beginning to ramp up. First, we got the welcome news that former showrunner and Doctor Who’s most prolific writer Steven Moffat has penned an episode for the new series, which is described as “Hitchcockian” in tone. His episode was directed by Julie-Anne Robinson.
Now, we have a full trailer running to two minutes and change. It’s the most footage of the new series we’ve had so far, from the Tardis crashing through a wall,...

Head's up, Whovians! "Doctor Who" fans have been enjoying an embarrassment of riches lately, including (but not limited to) the casting of Ncuti Gatwa as the Fifteenth Doctor, the grand return of acclaimed writer/director Russell T. Davies into the "Doctor Who" fold, and even the surprise appearance of beloved franchise actor David Tennant in that 60th anniversary special. But arguably the biggest development was saved for last, when we found out that BBC and Disney would be teaming up to bring the classic series to an even bigger global platform through Disney+ streaming.
Now, in a new announcement, Disney has revealed the official premiere date for the upcoming and widely-anticipated season. Mark your calendars and clear your schedules for Friday, May 10 2024 at 7:00 p.m. Edt. Right after ‘why two pairs of shoes but only one pair of trousers?’ the question on everybody’s lips after Doctor Who’s surprise bi-generation was: if David’s Tennant’s new Doctor is still around during Ncuti Gatwa’s era, does that make this a job share? Will Fourteen be popping in to audience applause every other episode like a wacky neighbour on a 1970s sitcom?
According to David Tennant, speaking to Radio Times Magazine ahead of his Bafta-hosting gig, the answer’s no. “The door is not any more open than it ever was,” Tennant told the mag, as reported by RadioTimes.com. “It’s very much the end of the story.”
“The Doctor’s happy. He is in a garden in Chiswick, being made mac and cheese by Bonnie Langford!”
What sweeter fate could befall any man?

“He’s saying you need to stop,” companion Donna Noble tells the Fourteenth Doctor after the Fifteenth Doctor lists off a litany of adventures from the first Doctor on. A pained expression covers Fourteen as he admits, “I don’t know how.”
That confession rings true for viewers, and not just because it comes from David Tennant, who is both a great actor and a frequent returnee to Doctor Who, most recently for the three 60th Anniversary Specials. And it’s not just because we know the Doctor as a person on the move. Ever since the character’s introduction in 1963, the Doctor has been defined by restlessness. Even when grounded on Earth, as was the case for the Third Doctor, or stuck defending a base under siege, the Doctor does not sit still. They search for answers, save the day, and then off...

Doctor Who is heading for a significant shakeup as Millie Gibson, who plays the Doctor’s newest companion, Ruby Sunday, prepares to exit the series after one season. The BBC introduced Gibson as Ruby Sunday in the latest Doctor Who Special “Doctor Who: The Church on Ruby Street,” alongside Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor. Replacing Gibson in Season 15 of the long-running series is Varara Sethu.
Gibson will return as Ruby Sunday for season 14 of the series, which is set to drop in May on the BBC in the U.K. and Disney+ internationally. Season 15 is currently shooting in Wales, where Gatwa and Sethu will likely learn how much running is involved in the Doctor Who filming process. No reason has been given as to why Gibson is exiting the show.
Russell T Davies returns to the series for seasons 14 and 15 to showrun, write, and executive produce the new episodes, with co-production handled by Bad Wolf.

According to a report, new Doctor Who companion Millie Gibson is leaving after her first series, and her replacement has been cast.
We’ve only had one hour of Ncuti Gatwa’s era of Doctor Who. However, in production terms, the second series is currently filming, and willl be broadcast in 2025.
While there are many advantages to filming so far ahead, one of the disadvantages is that information is harder to keep contained.
Which leads us to some news that was first reported by The Mirror – so do take it with a pinch of salt – but the story’s been picked up by a lot of websites, and it looks as though there’s something in this.
Apparently, Millie Gibson will leave Doctor Who after the 2024 Christmas Special. The new companion is said to be Varada Sethu, who is best known for starring in Neil Cross’ apocalyptic drama Hard Sun.

“Doctor Who” star Millie Gibson is being replaced after one season, Variety has confirmed.
“Jurassic World Dominion” actor Varada Sethu will star opposite Ncuti Gatwa as the Doctor’s companion in the 15th season of the show.
Gibson, who until now was best known for playing Kelly Neelan on British soap “Coronation Street,” made her debut on the long-running sci-fi show in December’s Christmas special. She played companion Ruby Sunday alongside Gatwa, who stars as the Fifteenth Doctor.
Gibson will return as Ruby in the upcoming 14th season, which is set to drop in May on the BBC in the U.K. and Disney+ internationally.
But for Season 15, which is currently shooting in Wales, Sethu will play Gatwa’s companion, a source confirmed. No other details have been revealed about her role. Sethu has previously appeared in “Andor” and “Mrs Sidhu Investigates.”
Gatwa, who also starred in “Barbie,” will stay on as the Doctor.

The Fifteenth Doctor era of Doctor Who is well underway with Ncuti Gatwa‘s first full episode helming the Tardis. This year’s Christmas Special, “The Church on Ruby Road,” saw the Doctor not only face off with mischievous Goblins with a taste for baby scones but also meet his new companion, Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson), who brings plenty of her own mysteries to the show. Who are her birth parents, what does her neighbor Mrs. Flood have to do with the upcoming season’s overarching plot, and what’s going on with the Hooded Woman who dropped her off at the church 24 years ago?
All questions we’ll have to wait to have answered in series 14, which is officially being marketed as Doctor Who season 1, marking the start of a new production era for the show, with returning showrunner Russell T Davies back at the helm.

After three (very delightful) zags into Doctor Who lore, the next Doctor is finally here.
When Jodie Whittaker‘s Thirteenth Doctor regenerated with David Tennant‘s face in last year’s “The Power of the Doctor,” fans wondered when Whittaker’s announced successor Ncuti Gatwa would take his place on the Tardis. Thanks to the magic of Bi-Generation (more on that in a second), Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor is ready to put on some trousers and go on his own adventures through space and time, beginning with the Doctor Who Christmas Special “The Church on Ruby Road.”

Sixty years is but the blink of an eye for a time-traveler like The Doctor. But for a television series, a Diamond Anniversary is an extremely rare and impressive occurrence.
BBC’s Doctor Who recently celebrated such a milestone with three one-hour specials which, for the first time, streamed globally on Disney+.
Russell T Davies, fresh from his success on ’80s AIDS miniseries It’s a Sin, returned to the show he brought back so successfully to the BBC in 2005. Bolstering his team are returning producers Julie Gardner and Phil Collinson, as well as Jane Tranter, the woman who was instrumental in bringing back Doctor Who in 2005. Bad Wolf, the company founded by Tranter and Gardner in 2015, currently produces the show with BBC Studios.
Another big returning name return was David Tennant, who played the 10th Doctor from 2005 to 2010 and who also returned for the show’s 50th anniversary in 2013. Beloved by fans and audiences alike,...

“When I was young, I was so sure of myself,” the Doctor tells Donna Noble early in the third and final Doctor Who 60th Anniversary Special. “I made a terrible mistake.” That bit of exposition catches up viewers who never got the chance to watch the lost First Doctor serial “The Celestial Toymaker,” in which Michael Gough played the Toymaker, the bad guy of “The Giggle,” now played by Neil Patrick Harris. I’ll just say it – I don’t want him to go. For as much excitement as there is around a new era of Doctor Who with Ncuti Gatwa in the Tardis, and rightly so, it has been an absolute treat to have David Tennant’s Doctor back, especially with the ever-brilliant Donna at his side.
The bursts of fury, the moments of melancholia, the hugging, the brainy specs… If this really is the last time Tennant ever dons the skinny suit, these three specials might be the most triumphant final appearance of any Doctor to date.
There’s one last adventure to enjoy before the Fourteenth Doctor bows out, however, and it begins in Georgian-era London with a visit to a toy shop. If Doctor Who fans ever felt hard done by during any of the show’s previous big anniversaries then the 60th is here to soothe spirits, hand out cherished gifts, and generally make a bloody big hair-ruffling fuss of the lot of us.
First came news of David Tennant and Catherine Tate’s return in three anniversary specials, then came the ‘roughly 8 million episodes of Doctor Who are coming to BBC iPlayer on November 1’ announcement, then they brought back Doctor Who Confidential under a different name, and now…
…three Classic era Doctors are returning alongside eight former Doctor Who Companions (plus The Sarah Jane Adventures’ Clyde Langer) for new series Tales of the Tardis.
New Scenes, Classic Who Cast
Not a behind-the-scenes documentary, and not standalone adventures, the six-part series will pair up the stars of classic Who acting in new scenes together, in character, wrapped around episodes from six existing serials.

Praise Russell T Davies and his list of demands – Doctor Who is coming back to Saturday nights!
There’s no more guesswork required as to when the three 60th anniversary specials will air; the BBC has confirmed that we’ll get one a week starting from Saturday November 25, two days after the show’s official birthday on Thursday 23, and continuing on Saturday December 2 and Saturday December 9.
The exact BBC One time slots have yet to be announced, but common sense says that we’re looking at the pre-Strictly Come Dancing six to seven pm hour in the UK. If Disney+ is synchronising the streaming release worldwide, that would make it somewhere around lunchtime in the US. We’ll update as soon as the time slots are confirmed.
Each new extended special was written by Russell T Davies, with music by returning composer Murray Gold, and will be an hour long.

From 1st November, BBC iPlayer will host over 800 episodes of Doctor Who, including all the classic series from the very first Doctor, William Hartnell, right the way through to the 1996 TV movie with Paul McGann.

Margolyes, a beloved UK acting vet, will voice Meep, the iconic creature adapted from The Star Beast comic strip.
“I’m relieved I got to work on Doctor Who before I died,” said Margolyes. “With sci-fi you never know. Thank you for making an old woman very happy.”
Margolyes, who played Professor Sprout in Harry Potter, has boarded three special episodes at the end of this year, which will see David Tennant take on the role of the 14th Doctor to coincide with the show’s 60th anniversary. It sounded great, didn’t it? Three hour-long Doctor Who anniversary specials in November, a Christmas (not just “festive”) episode, and a new season starting much earlier than many had assumed it would. That was the announcement made on Tuesday August 22 by this post on the Culture section of the BBC’s website, as reported (and screen-grabbed) by multiple online outlets.
The original BBC statement read as follows:
“Three hour-long special episodes of Doctor Who will be available from November 2023, with a Christmas special dropping in December and a new season in Spring 2024.”
Go to the same page today, Thursday August 24, and the same statement currently reads:

After the Spring 2024 release date was seized on and widely reported online, someone’s been in with the digital scissors and snipped it out...

Bonnie Langford is returning to Doctor Who, reprising her role of legendary companion Melanie Bush.
We first met Mel in 1986, going on time-travelling adventures first with the sixth Doctor, Colin Baker, and then his successor Sylvester McCoy in 1987. During six stories spanning 20 episodes, she encountered villains and monsters aplenty, including the plant-based slave race the Vervoids, genocidal humanoids called the Bannermen, and the infamous renegade Time Lady The Rani.
Now Bonnie Langford is bringing Mel back for an epic adventure with the fifteenth Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa:
Mel-come back!

Jonathan Groff is the latest cast member announced to be joining Doctor Who series 14 in an as-yet undisclosed mysterious “key role”, the BBC has announced.
Groff is best known to children the world over as the voice of Kristoff in Disney’s Frozen films, and to Broadway audiences as King George III from the original cast of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s mega-hit musical Hamilton.
That makes him the third big American Broadway star making his debut in the new Doctor Who episodes, following Neil Patrick Harris’ villainous role in the forthcoming 60th anniversary specials, and the recent announcement that Chicago the stage musical and RuPaul’s Drag Race star Jinkx Monsoon had joined the cast of series fourteen.
Could that much-discussed all-singing, all-dancing episode finally be on the way? The official press release accompanying the casting announcement doesn’t exactly quash the rumours with its choice of headline: “Doctor Who Hits Another...

Newer viewers less familiar with 1980s Doctor Who however, could be forgiven for feeling slightly mystified by this mass hysteria. So with that in mind, here’s a handy guide to what makes Janet Fielding and Sophie Aldred’s characters such icons of the show.
Shaking Up the Tardis Status Quo
As if she had been plucked from an entirely different genre of television, much like Donna Noble would many years later, Australian flight attendant Tegan Jovanka shook up the Tardis status quo like never before. Given how integral a companion’s home life is to the modern era of Doctor Who, it’s of note that...
