- Was in the Royal Navy
- Continued his affiliation with the sea long after leaving the Royal Navy, sailing his own yacht, based at Chichester harbour. Fittingly, he is best remembered as the crusty sea dog Captain Baines from The Onedin Line (1971).
- He was a guest star in the second, third and fourth episodes of Doctor Who (1963). Coincidentally, he died on December 12, 1989, only six days after the final episode of the series was originally broadcast.
- Howard Lang played Sir John Seymour, father of Lady Jane Seymour in the 1970's BBC series The Six Wives of Henry V111. Lady Jane was played by Anne Stallybrass who subsequently played Anne Onedin in the Onedin Line, while Lang played First Mate, later Captain Baines.
