Who Narrates The Cold Case Files Docuseries
Image
Bill Kurtis narrates and adds dramatic emphasis to Cold Case Files' original and revival run. Kurtis' narration showcases his experience as a prominent investigative journalist. Danny Glover temporarily narrated the Netflix reboot before Kurtis returned for the revival on A&e Networks.

The two narrators for the true-crime series Cold Case Files not only add an air of further mystery to the show but have also worked on other projects involving criminal investigation. Cold Case Files is a 2017 limited series revival of the 1999 show of the same name. Both series explore criminal cases that have been closed for years, documenting both the past investigations and what happens when new leads arrive. The Netflix crime show copies the original's dramatic twists and turns as it looks into various stories. It also copies the show's added ominous feel through its invisible narrator.

The Netflix TV show's narrator serves a simple function in the series.

2022 Emmy nominations ballot: 33 narrators vie for your consideration
Image
The TV academy has honored voice-only performances since 1992, when six cast members from “The Simpsons” collectively became the first actors to receive Emmys for such work. The Best Voice-Over Performance category became an official non-juried one in 2009 and was then split into two categories in 2014: Best Character Voice-Over and Best Narrator. Jeremy Irons (“Game of Lions”) made history as the latter category’s first champion, having been awarded once before for “The Great War and the Shaping of the 20th Century: War Without End” in 1997.

The 2022 Best Narrator ballot list below consists of 33 performances. Seeking a fourth victory is David Attenborough (“The Mating Game”), whose three-year streak was broken last year by Sterling K. Brown (“Lincoln: Divided We Stand”). Also in the mix are former winners Peter Coyote (“Benjamin Franklin”) and Keith David (“Muhammad Ali”).

Unlike the live action and fictional program nominees, which are chosen by all 22,000 plus academy members,...

Garden of Eden (1954)
The Staircase: Every TV Show About The Michael Peterson Case
Garden of Eden (1954)
Truth be told, the human species has always been interested in the dark subject that we now call “true crime.” In the Western mythological canon, the very first story after the creation of man and the Garden of Eden is literally that of a fratricide.

Still, you may have noticed of late that pop culture’s obsession with crimes, those who commit them, and how they are punished has intensified of late. If you want to pinpoint a recent moment in the 21st century where our fascination with true crime intensified, you can probably do a lot worse than 2004’s The Staircase.

The Staircase (titled Soupçons or “Suspicions” in its director’s native French) is a multi-part true crime docuseries that helped paved the way for so many of the other true crime docs we see today. The project began when French filmmaker Jean-Xavier de Lestrade learned of a curious...

“Cold Case Files” and “American Justice” will return to the cable network on Friday, Aug. 20, with original host and producer Bill Kurtis returning for “Cold Case” while Dennis Haysbert takes over narration for the “reimagined” version of “Justice.”

“Cold Case Files,” which revisits unsolved cases through interviews with family members and investigators, first debuted on A&e in 1999 with Kurtis as host. The network teamed with Blumhouse Television for a 10-episode revival in 2017, with Danny Glover providing narration.

“American Justice” aired on A&e between 1992 and 2005, examining cases like the Jeffrey Dahmer serial killings, the Wells Fargo Heist and the murder of Selena. Category 6 Media will produce both revivals for A&e.

“A&e has long been a leader in true crime programming and we are thrilled to bring back two of our original series that defined and shaped the genre,...

Carl Kasell Dies: 30-Year NPR Newsman Known For ‘Wait Wait … Don’t Tell Me!’ Was 84
Carl Kasell, a career radio man who anchored NPR newscasts for more than 30 years and was a longtime fan favorite on its quiz show Wait Wait… Don’t Tell Me, died today of Alzheimer’s complications in Potomac, MD. He was 84.

Starting out at 16 as a late-night music DJ on his hometown station, Kasell spent a lifetime behind the microphone. He liked to tell the story of how he’d hide behind the family’s radio and try to fool people into thinking he was on the air. He joined NPR in 1975 as a part-time announcer for Weekend All Things Considered and made his weekday-mornings debut four years later on the then-nascent Morning Edition, where he remained until 2009. During those decades, Kasell became one of the pubcaster’s most familiar voices.

In early 1998, the usually stoic Kasell took a lighter turn, becoming the judge and scorekeeper for a wacky new...

The Killing Season (2016)
A&E’s ‘The Killing Season’ Investigates the Gruesome Truth Behind Hundreds of Unsolved Murders
The Killing Season (2016)
The remains of five young women were found in the marshes alongside Gilgo Beach, a remote spit of land on the south shore of Long Island, between December 2010 and March 2011. Parts of five more bodies were discovered in the same area the following month. Detectives theorized the murders were the work of a serial killer but turned up no suspects. The cases went cold and stayed cold. Police were accused of obfuscation and corruption, charges that would later prove true.

But there was something else, perhaps, hindering the investigations. The first five victims were identified as escorts, women who advertised their services online. Did police slack on solving the cases because they considered sex workers culpable for their own murders? How do you square a TV crew member, reporting on the search at Gilgo Beach, being overheard to say, “I can’t believe they’re doing all this for a...

Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, David Koechner, and Paul Rudd in Los amos de la noticia (2013)
'Anchorman 2' trailer: It's kind of a big deal. Let's do a deep dive!
Will Ferrell, Steve Carell, David Koechner, and Paul Rudd in Los amos de la noticia (2013)
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues isn’t the sort of film that normally demands the deep dive treatment. Careful frame-by-frame analyses are generally reserved for big-name adaptations, franchise-extending summer blockbusters, and comic book-based extravaganzas — you know, action movies with rich mythologies and lots of things that go “boom.”

But even if this clip is devoid of space ships, costumed heroes, and fights to the death, it’s chock-full of intriguing new characters, tantalizing plot tidbits, and righteous mustaches — making it the perfect candidate for some good, old-fashioned obsessive scrutiny.

That said, let’s go see if we can make this kitty purr!

‘Anchorman 2’ Teaser Trailers Get the Channel 4 Team Back Together For a Scotch-Fueled Man-Off
This past weekend, a new teaser trailer for Adam McKay’s highly anticipated comedy sequel Anchorman 2 played in theaters, but not many people got to check it out because it was attached to The Dictator and paying movie ticket prices and sitting through over an hour of Sacha Baron Cohen’s stale act just to see a few seconds of Anchorman goodness wasn’t a proposition for the weak at heart. But everybody who missed out can stop crying and start rejoicing, because not only has that teaser trailer now hit the net, but there’s also an alternate version of said trailer being hosted over at Funny or Die. Both trailers have a similar set-up: the guys strike iconic poses, get a chance to riff a funny line, and liberal use is made of that Alan Parsons Project song that Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat used to come out to in the ’80s and the Chicago...

Watch Ebert Presents: At the Movies – “Going to the Movies with a Critic”
From the time I was a kid, I remember watching Roger Ebert and Gene Siskel review the latest movies on TV as the highlight of my viewing week. After Siskel’s death in 1999, Richard Roeper joined Ebert, and although the chemistry wasn’t quite the same, I had great fun watching the two of them together until, sadly, Ebert’s voice was taken by cancer. Even then, Roeper continued the show with a variety of guest hosts (including, at different times, Jay Leno and Kevin Smith, resulting in a newspaper headline that read, “Jay and Silent Bob”), until Roeper was ultimately sacked by Disney after a drop in ratings and a desire for them to attract a younger, more hip presenting duo to attract a more populist audience.

They eventually brought in two new hosts, Ben Mankiewicz and Ben Lyons, the latter of which should never have been anyway near the camera’s,...

Memories are made of this
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. Gene Siskel and I fought like cats and dogs, and we made some good television.

During those early years for "Sneak Previews" our favorite occupation was dreaming up "special editions" which were sort of like the "think pieces" we wrote for our papers.

I hadn't seen those shows for years, but it turns out they were safely slumbering in the vaults of Wttw/Chicago, our public television station. Starting Friday, we're going to be airing the best of those old shows on "Ebert Presents At The Movies."

Our favorite special edition was titled "Going to the Movies with a Critic." The idea was to follow the process of reviewing a single movie from beginning to end. The show opens with Gene and me receiving a call from John Iltis, then (and now) a Chicago movie publicist. It was...

Roger Ebert enlisting high-powered voice-overs
Roger Ebert has enlisted some high-powered stand-ins to do voice-overs for his new TV show while finishing touches are made to his customized electronic voice.

Famed director Werner Herzog's German-accented voice read the script for a review of the film My Dog Tulip while Ebert typed during the show's debut January 21 episode. On Friday, it would be famed newsman Bill Kurtis' voice filling in.

Ebert said in an e-mail to the Associated Press that he doesn't know yet who will be future voice-over guests.

CereProc, a Scottish firm, is creating a digitized version of Ebert's voice using vast recordings from his past TV shows.

Anchorman Real-Time Review | Take Me to Pleasure Town
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004) is, along with Freddy Got Fingered (2001) and Wet Hot American Summer (2001) , one of my favorite comedies of the aughts (and I guess Dan seems to agree with me, at least in the case of two out of the three). Adam McKay's film is one of the handful of movies that, when I encounter it anywhere, it seduces my attention. I'm not really sure why the film appeals to me this strongly so, in order to try to make heads from tails, I'm writing up another real-time review.

1:17: I think part of what makes this film work so well is that it takes the classic screwball formula of the battle of the sexes as its foundation. Ron Burgundy (Will Ferrell) and Veronica Corningstone (Christina Applegate) are characters that, while hilarious, also have oddly "real" motivations for inhabitants of a comedy. Ron, despite his womanizing,...

TV Review: Promising ‘The Good Wife’ With Juliana Margulies
Chicago – From the non-stop ads (especially the ones that played all weekend locally with Bill Kurtis), you would be forgiven for thinking that CBS’ “The Good Wife” was solely about a scorned woman who enjoys slapping her lothario husband. There’s a lot more to the drama than that overplayed scene and the potential of the show is in the promise of watching a strong female character get past that moment, not play it over and over again.

Television Rating: 3.5/5.0 Emmy Award winner Juliana Margulies (“ER”) stars as Alicia Florrick, a woman who has always stood by her politician husband through thick and thin. You know those woman who you see standing next to the latest corrupt public figure as they give their apologies via press conference? That’s Alicia, who watches her world collapse when her husband Peter (Chris Noth) suffers a very public sex and political scandal.
