Subodh Bhave is hands down one of the best actors in the Marathi film industry today. The audience looks forward to his movies, and he has delivered several box office hits in the past. His latest release, Sangeet Manapmaan, was released ahead of the Sankranti festive season and was touted as the first Marathi blockbuster of 2025. Unfortunately, it has failed to make any mark in the first 5 days. Keep reading for a detailed collection report!

The latest Marathi release is the period musical drama. Mounted on a huge scale, the biggie also stars Vaidehi Parshurami, Sumeet Raghavan, Upendra Limaye, and Neena Kulkarni in key roles. It was released theatrically on January 10 and opened to a highly positive response from critics. However, at ticket windows, it failed to generate the required movement.

Viacom 18 is fast acquiring the reputation of being producers who kill their own films, for reasons that are more fiscal than creative. They did it to the wonderful Dhak Dhak and now to Shastry Viruddh Shastry, a thoughtful if somewhat sluggish remake of a very successful Bengali film Posto.

The story of an unusual custody battle, Shatry Viruddh Shastry sees a 7-year old boy’s grandparents, played by Paresh Rawal and Neena Kulkarni who are no match to Soumitra Chatterjee and Lily Chakraborty in the original, fighting to keep their grandson with them.

Sonu Nigam’s voice when harbouring sadness and the feeling of pure morose needs little compliments. Bringing forth a heart-wrenchingly painful song of grief in the ‘Shastry Virudh Shastry’ song ‘Khushi Ke Bahane’, the singer’s voice passionately brings about the soul of the movie in audio.

A song of how loved ones are left fighting one another, and leaving each other behind in their infighting, ‘Khushi Ke Bahane’ drives home the feeling of broken trust and the sorrow of what may just be damage that is now beyond repair.

Composed by Anupam Roy, the track is done in a very classic Bollywood style but not in the modern way. Rather, it sounds like the iconic singer K.L Saigal has been brought back to life as this tonally shifts to his old ‘40s songs.

Ranaut has a whole harvest of heroic moments to herself. She is an ideal soldier and a wonderful daughter. There is a flashback where she brings her boyfriend (Varun Mitra who always looks like he forgot to check the gas in the kitchen before leaving home) to meet her parents.

Tejas’ father sings a beautiful Punjabi love song (although ironically is his future son-in-law who is a singer). So much better than frowning and smirking at the daughter’s boyfriend.

Of late there have been other filma on a death in the family like Ram Prasad Ki Tehrvi and Paglaitt. In spirit, Goodbye is closer to the former, though the only similarity between the two films is a sudden death in the family. In Ram Prasad… it was Supriya Pathak coping with the death of her husband and the drama of push and pull of interests that follows.

Amitabh Bachchan in Goodbye as Harish Bhalla, the patriarch of thea family is a bristling bundle of ire and sarcasm. His abnormal aggression at his loss targets all his children especially the daughter Gayatri(Rashmika Mandanna). After receiving several recognition and honours at the film festival circuit throughout the globe, Marathi film ‘Godavari’ starring ‘Sacred Games’ fame actor Jitendra Joshi, is headed to theatrical release on November 11.

Jitendra took to his social media to announce the release date and pay tribute to his friend, the late filmmaker, Nishikant Kamat on his second death anniversary.

Jitendra said in his heartfelt tribute” “When a friend leaves us, we are left with nothing but their thoughts. It’s been two years since you left Nishikant. Ever since you left, there has been a strange uneasiness. In an attempt to find you again, I found Godavari and Nishikant in it.”

Nishikant, who made films like ‘Mumbai Meri Jaan’, ‘Drishyam’ (Hindi) and ‘Dombivli Fast’, died at the age of 50 due to liver cirrhosis.

Actress Neena Kulkarni, who has been a part of the industry since the 1970s, says, over the years, the age of her co-actors has been steadily reducing. The actress says when she began working her, she used to be teamed up with people older than her but now she often finds herself in film units where her co-actor is younger than her.

"I come from a time when my directors and co-actors used to be older or of my age. Then I moved to a time when the directors, writers and even co-actors are younger than me! I mean nowadays, at times, my husband (on screen) is literally younger," she informs.
