The complex bond between attachment and release is deeply intertwined with love and mortality. In our lives, we tend to pose a significant question to our partners about the aftermath of one’s death, or rather, who dies first. The responses are typically complex, simplistic, or non-existent. Yet, the familiar pattern of shuttling between home and hospital, clinging to a sliver of hope, has become an undeniable reality. It’s as tangible as the clash between eternal love and the harsh truths of existence. Gajendra Ahire, a more pronounced name in the Marathi film industry, tries to tackle this dilemma in “The Signature,” which, of course, is not for the first time. Yet, the perspective that it chooses is complicated and sensitive- that of an old man with a much more energetic wife who finds herself unexpectedly on the verge of death.

Shastry Viruddh Shastry (streaming on Netflix)
Starring Paresh Rawal, Neena Kulkarni, Shiv Pundit, Mimi Chakraborty
Directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee, Nandita Roy
Viacom 18 is fast acquiring the reputation of being producers who kill their own films, for reasons that are more fiscal than creative. They did it to the wonderful Dhak Dhak and now to Shastry Viruddh Shastry, a thoughtful if somewhat sluggish remake of a very successful Bengali film Posto.
The story of an unusual custody battle, Shatry Viruddh Shastry sees a 7-year old boy’s grandparents, played by Paresh Rawal and Neena Kulkarni who are no match to Soumitra Chatterjee and Lily Chakraborty in the original, fighting to keep their grandson with them.
Paresh plays a classical musician Manohar who along with his wife Urmila (Neena Kulkarni) looks after their grandchild Momoji (Kabir Pahwa) in Panchgani (the original film was set in Shantiniketan). When the child’s parents...

Sonu Nigam’s voice when harbouring sadness and the feeling of pure morose needs little compliments. Bringing forth a heart-wrenchingly painful song of grief in the ‘Shastry Virudh Shastry’ song ‘Khushi Ke Bahane’, the singer’s voice passionately brings about the soul of the movie in audio.
A song of how loved ones are left fighting one another, and leaving each other behind in their infighting, ‘Khushi Ke Bahane’ drives home the feeling of broken trust and the sorrow of what may just be damage that is now beyond repair.
Composed by Anupam Roy, the track is done in a very classic Bollywood style but not in the modern way. Rather, it sounds like the iconic singer K.L Saigal has been brought back to life as this tonally shifts to his old ‘40s songs.
The composition is very much classic old-school Bollywood music-oriented but has a modern production and new...

‘Shastry Virudh Shastry’ is the Hindi remake of the 2017 hit Bengali film ‘Posto’, also directed by Shiboprosad Mukherjee and Nandita Roy. A very contemporary and relevant story that checks all the right boxes about raising children, parents versus grandparents, the taboo of drinking, tradition versus modernity et al.
‘Shastry Virudh Shastry’ is about Malhaar Shastry (Shiv Panditt) and Mallika Shastry (Mimi Chakraborty), a hard working couple, chasing their dreams who get into a situation that unsettles their life. Soon, Malhaar gets a lucrative dream-come-true opportunity in the USA. The couple make up their mind to take the leap of faith and move abroad. So, what’s the fuss?
Their 7 year old son Yaman Shastry aka Momoji (Kabir Pahwa) has been living with his loving & caring grandparents Manohar Shastry (Paresh Rawal) & Urmila Shastry (Neena Kulkarni) since he was 3 months old. Malhaar’s father Manohar has reservations about allowing his grandson to move with his parents.

Tejas
From the makers of the much-lauded war film Uri comes this patriotic potboiler, and I do mean potboiler in a positive way.
For two braveheart female airforce pilots to plunder their way into enemy territory to rescue an Indian hostage, is a wonderful and welcome whoosh of wishful thinking, and I can’t help being impressed by writer-director’s Sarvesh Mevara’s impunity at doing a Top Gun with Kangana.
Ranaut has a whole harvest of heroic moments to herself. She is an ideal soldier and a wonderful daughter. There is a flashback where she brings her boyfriend (Varun Mitra who always looks like he forgot to check the gas in the kitchen before leaving home) to meet her parents.
Tejas’ father sings a beautiful Punjabi love song (although ironically is his future son-in-law who is a singer). So much better than frowning and smirking at the daughter’s boyfriend.

Veteran actor Paresh Rawal’s upcoming family-drama film ‘Shastri Virudh Shastry’ has released its official trailer. A very promising looking enterprise, Paresh Rawal shines in the trailer as both a loving grandparent and a strict father.
Dealing with some very prominent themes, the movie sees Paresh Rawal and his on-screen wife Neena Kulkarni taking care of their 7-year-old grandson Momoji. A very loving and caring couple, the two dote on their grandson and take care of his every need as the boy’s parents are working in the US.
However, this happy period takes a dark turn as Momo’s parents who are essayed by actors Shiv Panditt and Mini Chakraborty come back to India to meet their son.
As the two are unaware of how to handle a kid, Momo is very close to his grandparents who understand all his needs while the parents, though loving, don’t know...

Jitendra Joshi, who plays the lead character ‘Nishikant’ in Godavari won the best actor award at Iffi to be the only 4th Indian actor to win this award in the last 60 years! To add to the credibility, Godavari was the only Marathi film among the six films selected in Indian languages by the government for Cannes and the only Indian film at this year’s Vancouver International Film Festival.
One of the most silent characters of Godavari – Nashik – has a lot of mythological significance due to its references to stories of Ramayana, birthplace of Hanuman, one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, Kumbh Mela, source of Godavari, etc. However, even in contemporary times, the ancient city of Nashik, on the banks of the river Godavari is seen to be maintaining its traditions going on for years together.

Goodbye
Starring Amitabh Bachchan, Neena Kulkarni,Rashmika Mandanna, Sunil Grover, Pavail Gulati, Ashish Vidyarthi, Elli AvrRam, Sahil Mehta and Shivin Narang in supporting roles
Written & Directed by Vikas Bahl
Of late there have been other filma on a death in the family like Ram Prasad Ki Tehrvi and Paglaitt. In spirit, Goodbye is closer to the former, though the only similarity between the two films is a sudden death in the family. In Ram Prasad… it was Supriya Pathak coping with the death of her husband and the drama of push and pull of interests that follows.
Amitabh Bachchan in Goodbye as Harish Bhalla, the patriarch of thea family is a bristling bundle of ire and sarcasm. His abnormal aggression at his loss targets all his children especially the daughter Gayatri(Rashmika Mandanna). The two are continuously at loggerheads about the rituals to be followed after the mother Neena Gupta’s death.

The first-half of Sunny Deol’s admirable but finally undone sequel to the 1990 hit Ghayal is so riveting that one is hoodwinked into believing that we are on to something remarkably well-packaged over here.
Wrong! The second-half comes on like a tornado to wipe out all the good that is achieved earlier. And initially there is plenty that is done with edge-of-the-seat heart-in-the-mouth adeptness as we are introduced to our hero 14 years after he was incarcerated for killing Balwant Rai, played by Amrish Puri in the 1990 hit Ghayal.
New era. New villain. Same hero. This time Ajay Mehra, older and far more distraught than he was 14 years ago (he is psychiatric medication) takes on a corporate tycoon named Raj Bansal, played by Narendra Jha who was so compelling as Tabu’s missing husband in Haider. Here, the rhythm required from Jha is different and he tries hard to find his bearings.
