Film Review: Season of Terror (1969) by Koji Wakamatsu
Image
By the late 60s and the beginning of 70s, a number of independent filmmakers frequently mixed fiction with non-fiction while appropriating journalistic materials of well-known media events. Nagisa Oshima and Koji Wakamatsu were two of the most prominent directors in that regard, with “Season of Terror”, which was released just two months after “Go, Go, Second Time Virgin” , being a prominent sample.

In that fashion, the movie begins by presenting a series of press photographs and newspaper headlines, mostly focusing on the student riots and their clashes with the police, along with the military training of what appears to be a rightist group. As soon as the rather impressive montage is finished, we are introduced to the first protagonist of the movie, a former radical leader who has been out of sight for quite some time. Next, we get to meet the other two,...

Motion Picture Purgatory: Entrails of a Virgin (Shojo no harawata)
With a title like Entrails of a Virgin, who wouldn't love this 1986 Japanese film written and directed by Kazuo 'Gaira' Komizu? If ever a flick had Trembles' name all over it, it's this one!

And then there's the synopsis: Members of a film crew making a soft core porn are dismembered by a demon in a warehouse.

It's the first entry in a series of three films by Komizu, the other two being the considerably more graphic and hardcore Entrails of a Beautiful Woman (1986) and Female Inquisitor (1987).

Fogging flogging!

Battle Girl: The Living Dead In Tokyo Bay review
Director: Kazuo 'Gaira' Komizu. Review: Tim Irwin. Battle Girl: The Living Dead in Tokyo Bay is not a good movie by any stretch of the imagination. It is campy, gruesome fun, and interesting as a predecessor to the shock films that Japan has been producing recently, ranging from Tokyo Gore Police and The Machine Girl to Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl, but it is not a good film. And honestly, who would expect a film with this title to be good? And would anyone seek it out if they weren't anticipating gory, campy, science fiction? The story combines elements of post-apocalyptic films, zombie infection, and a singular female hero who is a war machine. As the movie opens there is a large meteor heading toward earth, where it proceeds to collide with Tokyo Bay. The heat from the impact creates a vast cloud of steam that forms a shield around Tokyo,...

Look out America Battle Girl is coming
Synapse Films continue their ongoing campaign to bring early schlock horror and exploitation cinema to the Us, with the release of Kazuo 'Gaira' Komizu’s, Battle Girl: The Living Dead In Tokyo Bay on R1 DVD. Komizu gained notoriety in 80s Japan with films like ‘Entrails of a Virgin’ and ‘Entrails of a Beautiful Woman,’ and from just the titles you can guess in depth character and plot development weren't top of his list. Zombies, nudity, sex, gore and spatter were the name of the game. Nothing new there you’d argue? But then its always interesting to see how they used to do it the “olden” days. Battle Girl goes on sale on Feb 23rd. A meteor lands in Japan and the fallout creates a “shield” around Tokyo, encasing the city in a foggy darkness. A state of martial law is declared. People are in a panic...

Synapse grabs Embodiment Of Evil for North America.; Battle Girl details & more
José Mojica Marins
Synapse Films gave Fango the scoop that it has snapped up the North American rights to Embodiment Of Evil (see our review of the import release here), the new adventure of Brazilian horror legend José Mojica Marins, a.k.a. Coffin Joe (pictured). The company also provided us the first look at cover art and specs for its upcoming DVD of the Japanese sci-fi/horror opus Battle Girl: The Living Dead In Tokyo Bay (Batoru Garu), streeting February 23.

Embodiment Of Evil’s scenario, written by Marins and Dennison Ramalho, sees the evil Coffin Joe rising from his grave to continue his quest for a woman to bear his child, torturing and killing anyone who stands in his way. The film has won raves and awards at numerous international festivals, including Montreal’s Fantasia (see story here), Spain’s Sitges and others. Synapse will issue the film on DVD and Blu-ray...
