All 7 seasons of the NBC comedy 30 Rock are available to binge on Hulu. Tina Fey created the show inspired by her experiences on Saturday Night Live, though the world of Tgs was wilder than SNL. 30 Rock was both a Hollywood industry satire and a universally relatable workplace comedy with career and dating foibles.

The writers branch of the television academy has a history of going its own way. Remember, this is the branch that nominated underdog shows like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” for “Hush” (2000), “Battlestar Galactica” for “Six of One” (2008) “Community” for “Remedial Chaos Theory” (2012) and “Catastrophe” for “Episode 1” (2016), among other pleasant surprises over the years.
So it’s hard to anticipate which way the wind will blow for the TV academy’s writers from year to year. But here are two dark horse episodes to watch for in the Emmy race for Best Comedy Writing come Emmy nominations day, July 12.
“Episodes” for “Episode 7,” written by David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik
This duo has contended for each of their series’s past four seasons. For their last at bat they submitted the meta series finale where British writers Sean (Stephen Mangan) and Beverly (Tamsin Greig) turn their own experiences in Los Angeles into a series.

They say you always remember your first time. “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” star Rachel Bloom was appropriately smutty as she reflected on learning that her show had been picked up to series by The CW.
Bloom and “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna, speaking on TheWrap’s Outstanding Showrunner Comedy Panel Tuesday night, shared some words of wisdom from the late, great comedy writer Jerry Belson: “In Hollywood, you almost never get to come.”
For Bloom and McKenna, Belson’s expression means that any victory or milestone doesn’t arrive as excitement, but relief after countless hours of work and effort.

Fox’s cancellation of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” came as a shock to many of the show’s fans, but showrunner Dan Goor suspected that the writing might be on the wall far sooner.
Goor told TheWrap Tuesday night that if the wedding at the end of Season 5 turned out to be the series finale, he wouldn’t have been disappointed.
“We sort of had this feeling there was a chance,” he said on TheWrap’s Outstanding Showrunner Comedy Panel at the Landmark Theatres in Los Angeles Tuesday. “The year before we had Jake and Rosa wrongly convicted and sent to prison, and it would’ve been such a weird F-u to the audience. Then we did a wedding, and I would not have been disappointed if it had been the series finale, but it wasn’t really what I felt like the show was about.”

On Tuesday night, “Friends” co-creator David Crane came face-to-face with a television writer who almost cost him Jennifer Aniston in the role of Rachel Green.
In 1994, future “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend” showrunner Aline Brosh McKenna was a consultant on a sitcom called “Muddling Through.” That CBS comedy starred Aniston as one of several bartenders, and had Aniston in first position — meaning she could only do other shows if “Muddling Through” was canceled. That left “Friends” in the friend zone, unsure whether Aniston could commit.
“The fear was that we would shoot four or five of them, and CBS, just to screw with NBC, would pick up ‘Muddling Through,’ and then we would have to recast and reshoot the first five episodes,” Crane said at the Wrap Emmy Screening panel for comedy show runners.

All that speculation you’ve been seeing about a “Friends” reunion is wrong. “Friends” co-creator David Crane said Wednesday that a reunion of the beloved sitcom will “never” happen, but did share a little good news: Ross and Rachel are still together.
Crane and his “Episodes” co-creator, Jeffrey Klarik, were among the panelists Wednesday at TheWrap’s Emmy Series comedy showrunners panel, where the conversation turned to revivals. Crane said that no matter how much fans think they want a “Friends” revival, they really don’t.
“Never happening. Never. We did it! It’s done,” Crane said. “That’s why you don’t want to see more of it, because it’s all a happy ending.”

Matt LeBlanc doesn’t think his performance on “Episodes” is brave, and that’s exactly why it is.
“People would say, ‘It’s very brave,’ to which I thought, ‘I don’t know if it’s brave.’ It’s really good writing,” LeBlanc said to IndieWire when asked what viewers’ biggest misconception was regarding his character. “People would ask me, ‘Are you worried people will think that’s what you’re really like?’ And, well, if I do my job right, then hopefully people will think that’s what I’m really like. That’s what an actor’s job is: to make people believe. So I got past that early on because the writing was good, and I didn’t mind being the butt of the joke because the joke was good.”

Jeffrey Klarik reveals he’d like people to remember that his show “Episodes”’ was “honest writing and it was funny writing” Klarik co-created the series with working and life partner David Crane, which aired its final season last fall on Showtime. In our recent interview (watch the exclusive video above), Crane adds, “As we were doing draft after draft we were trying to hone the thing down so it felt both funny and truthful.” Klarik then jokes that he hopes “that it’s especially remembered in this awards season. Our biggest fear is that it’s gonna fall through the cracks because we’re not the flavor of the month.”

Matt LeBlanc‘s Showtime series “Episodes” aired its series finale on Sunday, and the show took some cues from what has succeeded as a swan song for previous series — and what hasn’t. “Episodes” co-creators David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik told TheWrap that their time working on “Friends” helped them realize that fans want series finales to give them a final dose of what they loved, rather than dramatically altering the recipe. “We’re big believers in that the ending should be satisfying,” Crane said. “Making the choice to be deliberately or aggressively unsatisfying on a show like ‘Friends’ or a show like.

Does the breakout popularity of “The Big Bang Theory” spinoff “Young Sheldon” suggest that “Joey” should have been handled differently in order to keep the “Friends” magic alive? David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik, who worked together on “Friends,” spoke to TheWrap about whether they feel there was a missed opportunity in the execution of the Matt LeBlanc-led “Joey,” which sputtered when it launched in September 2004 and got the axe by NBC after two critically-maligned seasons. “Episodes” began as a journey: Two British television writers try to take their acclaimed series to America, and get caught in the web of Matt LeBlanc’s world. Sean (Stephen Mangan) and Beverly’s (Tamsin Greig) original show is flush with promise — literal promises from eager Hollywood studio executives — but “Episodes” chronicles their massive failure.
Entering Season 5, the couple has been put through the ringer. After five seasons, one awful sitcom, and a stolen bid at legitimacy, Sean and Beverly have experienced the industry at its most dysfunctional. And yet, they remain. They still care — desperately, foolishly, painfully — but they still care. They cling to the appearance of a normal life even as the flimsy walls of fake sets and fake people consistently come tumbling down.

When “Episodes” premieres its final season at the Tribeca Film Festival on Sunday, April 30, it will mark the first time new episodes have aired in over two years. The Season 4 finale of Matt LeBlanc’s scathing Hollywood satire debuted in March 2015, and even though the award-winning Showtime comedy has taken year-plus breaks before, we still don’t have an official release date from Showtime for Season 5.
If the wait has been hard on fans, they should know the creators are pained, as well.
“It’s been torturous, actually,” co-creator Jeffrey Klarik said in an interview with IndieWire. “We finished on June 3 [2016]. The show is done and ready to air. As soon as Showtime finds a time for us, we’ll be on.”
“We can’t wait to get back on the air,” fellow co-creator David Crane said. “It’s been a drawn out process because Jeffrey and I write all the episodes.

You can’t accuse the Tribeca Film Festival (April 19-30) of bandwagon jumping: Back in 2005, it screened the series finale of “Friends” outdoors on a Hudson pier for rapturous fans. Today, TV is a fait d’accompli as Tribeca expands its second annual TV program to 15 shows and five series. Golden-age TV draws viewers, Hollywood filmmakers, and a wider audience.
Last year, the TV program included world premieres of “The Night Of” (HBO, from Oscar-winning executive producer Steve Zaillian), “The Night Manager” (AMC, directed by Oscar-winning Susanne Bier), and “O.J.: Made in America” (Espn, directed by eventual Oscar-winner Ezra Edelman).

The Tribeca Film Festival announced its second annual Tribeca TV program on Thursday and it includes a range of world premieres, popular show returns and a slate of independent pilots. Tribeca 2017 Lineup: New Fillms From Alex Gibney, Azazel Jacobs and Laurie Simmons Lead the Eclectic Mix
The series has been in the news lately, and not only because it will premiere soon. The dystopian story about a government forcing fertile women to become breeders for their high-ranking officials has struck a nerve among progressive women who are wary of having their health and reproductive rights controlled. Recently, protestors dressed in the handmaids’ red robes and white bonnets made an appearance in the Texas Senate gallery as its members were passing abortion legislation.

Episodes, the sharpest Hollywood satire and one of the most roundly enjoyable comedies on TV, is to call it a day after season five.
Seven new episodes of the show with a title so bland it defies Google searches (perhaps they were following the same logic as Jez and Super Hans in their brief musical incarnation as "Various Artists, just to f*** over people with iPods"?) will go into production later this year for a 2017 debut.

When “Episodes” began, the very meta Showtime comedy leaned heavily on its references to “Friends.” It wasn't trying to imitate the last great multi-cam sitcom by using one of its stars to launch a spinoff, but creators David Crane and Jeffrey Klarik were manipulating public perception of Matt "Joey" LeBlanc to their advantage. Laughs were culled from how un-"Friend"-ly the alt-universe Leblanc was, mainly to our main characters, writers Beverly and Sean Lincoln -- how low he could sink into selfishness and how much sex he could have with anyone willing. (Okay, so that aspect of Joey didn’t change). Yet somehow, while it was busy busting the myth that LeBlanc was a one-trick pony — and cleverly so — it somehow became the trick itself. “Episodes,” in quite the ironic twist, has become the new “Friends.” Over the years, the show hasn't been shy about its connection to “Friends,...
