“I felt privileged and honored for the opportunity to even translate history in such a way, and I rolled my sleeves up, dove into the research and the creating began,” says “Genius: MLK/X” hair department head Jessi Dean. She and her team created over 75 wigs for National Geographic’s limited series chronicling the lives of civil rights pioneers Martin Luther King Jr. (played by Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and Malcolm X (played by Aaron Pierre). Watch our video interview with Dean above.
Dean was focused on making sure each character’s looks were historically accurate. “So Malcolm, his hair was chemically processed before he went into jail, and so understanding the rate of hair growth, just trying to capture that contrast of texture of his natural hair versus the chemically processed hair, I had to create that with product to revert the wig and give texture differences that way,” she explains.

Near the end of the miniseries Lawmen: Bass Reeves, David Oyelowo’s titular character is told something all too familiar to many unsung real-life heroes: “No one’s gonna ever know, but you made history today.”
“You can just imagine how many people from marginalized communities that is the truth for,” he says. “People who very much had a real hand in building this country, and whether it’s their history not being taught … or that their contribution to history hasn’t been valued in the same way, which is why getting this show made was an obsession.”
That obsession took the form of Yoruba Saxon, a talent-led production company Oyelowo created with his wife Jessica in 2014, though his desire to produce actually came from his “accidental experience” of helping to put together Ava DuVernay’s Selma years before. “I didn’t realize those moves that go on to lead...

Towering civil rights leaders Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X, both assassinated at the age of 39, met briefly on March 26, 1964 at the U.S. Capitol, where they were both present in support of the passage of the Civil Rights Act. While their paths intersected only once before their untimely deaths, the Nat Geo series “Genius: MLK/X” presents their extraordinary lives in tandem, despite their famously opposing ideologies.

At some point in middle school or high school, most people were exposed to two different types of rudimentary essay-writing. There’s the five-paragraph essay, that goes, intro/thesis-body-body-body-conclusion. And there’s the compare-and-contrast essay, in which you start with two seemingly opposed subjects and unify them by juxtaposing the ways they’re different, but also the ways in which they’re similar. From a distance of decades it’s easy to mock both essay structures, but they’re both incredibly useful ways of teaching young writers to approach complicated topics.
I’m not sure if the new season of National Geographic’s Genius anthology is the most ambitious compare-and-contrast essay every written, but MLK/X is at least a generally well-intentioned illustration of both pros and cons of the format.

In real life, Black civil rights pioneers Martin Luther King and Malcolm X met only once, briefly, in Washington, D.C., in 1964 as both attended a Senate debate.
And the trailer for Disney’s Genius: MLK/X docuseries, which dropped Thursday, opens with that chance Capitol Hill encounter that foreshadowed their dueling movements and personalities.
“We meet at last,” Malcolm X declares as the two black leaders shake hands, while in those years from the church pulpit, prison cells and elsewhere they worked to advance racial equality with competing movements: King favoring nonviolent activism as part of his civil rights struggle, and Muslim leader Malcolm X opting for Black empowerment and self-determination to battle against white supremacy.
Ahead of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Disney plans two episodes to bow weekly on National Geographic from Feb. 1, and to then stream on Disney+ and Hulu the day after.

Bernice King, the daughter of Coretta Scott King and Martin Luther King Jr., has seemingly criticized Jonathan Majors for using her mother’s name during a recent interview on Good Morning America.
In a post on X, formerly known as Twitter, King paid tribute to Scott King, writing, “My mother wasn’t a prop.” She added, “She was a peace advocate before she met my father and was instrumental in him speaking out against the Vietnam War. Please understand… my mama was a force.”

The Jonathan Majors assault trial finally took place last month. The actor, who was seen recently on season 2 of Marvel Studios’ Loki, had been awaiting trial for most of 2023, and the jury found him guilty of reckless assault in the third degree, which is a misdemeanour, and of harassment in the second degree, which is a violation. The fallout was swift, with the actor’s career grinding to a halt. Majors had started the year with his career flying high after being featured as the villain, Kang, in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania and as the opponent in Creed III. He was also ready to release another film, Magazine Dreams, which had already garnered him some acclaim. Monday morning, Majors appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America for his first interview since the whole incident transpired.

Jonathan Majors gave his first interview Monday since he was found guilty of misdemeanor assault and harassment in an incident involving his then-partner Grace Jabbari.
In an interview on ABC’s Good Morning America, Majors said he was “shocked at the verdict,” which carries a sentence of up to one year in jail. He also pressed back on his own culpability in the injuries suffered by Jabbari.
Asked several times by ABC News Live “Prime” anchor Linsey Davis about Jabbari’s injuries, Majors’ at first said that “I wish that I knew” how the injuries were caused.
Then pressed as to whether he was responsible for the injuries Majors said: “I shouldn’t have been in the car. I shouldn’t have stepped out of the relationship. I shouldn’t have been in the relationship,” he said. “If I’m not in the car, none of this is happening.”

The “Creed III” actor was convicted of two misdemeanor counts of harassment and assault over a domestic dispute with his former partner, Grace Jabbari. Majors will be sentenced on Feb. 6. He faces up to a year in jail but also could be sentenced to probation.

Jonathan Majors was convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, after a domestic dispute earlier this year. A Manhattan jury found the Marvel actor guilty on Monday of two misdemeanor counts of harassment and assault but acquitted him on two other counts.
The six-person jury found Majors not guilty on one count of intentional assault in the third degree and one count of aggravated harassment in the second degree. Majors, wearing a dark gray suit and seated in the courtroom with his attorneys and current girlfriend Meagan Good, did not react when the verdict was read.
Judge Michael Gaffey set a sentencing date of Feb. 6. Majors faces up to a year in jail, but he could also be sentenced to probation.

Colin Jost had to put his wife Scarlett Johansson on blast during a skit on the December 16 episode of Saturday Night Live, and it was all because of Michael Che.
The episode was the final new one to air before the holiday break, which is traditionally when the Weekend Update hosts write jokes for each other. The end result is some of the most shocking and off-color jokes of the season.
This time around was no different, and Michael‘s final jokes for Colin honed in on the Black Widow actress.

Colin Jost and Michael Che were back at it again on Saturday Night Live and wrote jokes for each other in what’s become an annual December tradition.
This time, Che made it a little more difficult for Jost as he introduced “someone very special who was last on this show, Season 3, 46 years ago.”
“Poet, author, activist… Please welcome Dr. Hattie Davis, ladies and gentlemen,” Che said.
Jost knew he was going to have a more difficult time reading the jokes Che wrote for him in front of Davis, but nonetheless, he was a trooper along the way.

Texts and an audio recording between actor Jonathan Majors and his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari, have been released to the general public.
In the newly released recording, previously limited to the six-person jury in Majors’ domestic violence case, Jabbari sobs as Majors fumes, “How dare you come home drunk and disturb the peace of our house!”
While Jabbari repeatedly sniffles and apologizes, Majors says, “Grace [Jabbari] has to be in a certain mindset to support — Coretta Scott King, do you know who that is? That’s Martin Luther King’s wife. Michelle Obama, Barack Obama’s wife.”
Majors continues, “I’m a great man. A great man. I am doing great things, not just for me but for my culture and for the world. That is actually the position I’m in.”
He went on, “The woman that supports me — that I support — needs to be a great woman and make sacrifices...

Jonathan Majors will not testify in the ongoing trial for his alleged assault against his ex-girlfriend, Grace Jabbari. The defense rested Wednesday afternoon and no further witnesses will be called.
Priya Chaudhry and Seth Zuckerman, Majors’ attorneys, only called three witnesses to the stand on Wednesday and rested their case in the late afternoon. Closing arguments are set to begin Thursday morning. After that, the jury will begin deliberating. Depending on how much time the jury needs, the verdict could be reached as soon as Friday or early next week.
Jabbari has alleged that Majors assaulted her in the backseat of a car on March 25. She testified last week that she saw a text message on Majors’ phone from another woman that read, “Wish I was kissing you right now.” She said that she took the phone out of his hands to see who sent the message and he forcefully retrieved it.

Several disturbing text messages and an audio recording from Jonathan Majors’ ongoing trial for alleged assault have been made public by the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
The newly released evidence, which was shown in court last week, is between Majors and his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari, who accused him of assaulting her in the backseat of a car in March. The evidence includes text messages in which Majors threatened to kill himself and an audio recording of an argument in which Majors told Jabbari she needed to act more like Coretta Scott King and Michelle Obama.
The text messages are from September 2022 and discuss a prior incident between Majors and Jabbari when they were a couple. Majors appears to dissuade Jabbari from going to the hospital after she suffered an injury to her head.
“I fear you have no perspective of what could happen if you go to the hospital,” Majors wrote.

Atlanta police have apprehended a woman who attempted to set fire to the birthplace of civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.
The arrest took place on Thursday evening after officers responded to a vandalism report at the historic two-story home located in Atlanta’s Auburn Avenue Historic District. Police say that a preliminary investigation suggests that the woman, 26, had poured gasoline on the property before she was stopped by individuals present at the site.
Atlanta Police Chief Darin Schierbaum commended the quick action of those on the scene.
“We believe at this time she was pouring gasoline on the porch and the door of the home. Their quick action saved a jewel of our city, something very important to Atlanta,” he told Wxia-tv.
