Disney has confirmed that Korean webtoon-to-screen adaptation “Low Life” is poised to begin production.
When valuable treasure is discovered off the coast of Korea, the country’s biggest degenerates come crawling out of the woodwork in the hope of striking it big. Word spreads after a fisherman got lucky and kept a piece of the booty for himself. Among those tempted to brave the depths of the ocean are two members of a fractious and disunited crime family – notably an uncle who both looked after his nephew and led him astray.
The original story was a webtoon written by Yoon Tae-ho and first published by Kakao between 2014 and 2015. The literal translation of the Korean title is ‘country bumpkin.’ The story itself was inspired by a real-life event when a 14th century Chinese ship was found in 1975 off the coast of Shinan, South Korea.
The adaptation is penned by Kang Yoon-sung,...

Clad in black suits as a mark of respect for the late Parasite actor Lee Sun-kyun, Oscar-winning director Bong Joon Ho and other prominent Korean film figures gathered for a solemn press conference in central Seoul on Friday, where they sternly called for an investigation into the police handling of Lee’s case that would tragically end in the actor’s death by apparent suicide.
“Throughout the two months, from the initial leak of internal information regarding the deceased’s investigation to the time of his death, we urge a thorough investigation by the authorities to ascertain whether there were any lapses in police investigative security,” Bong said, reading from an official statement prepared by 29 prominent arts and culture groups, including the Busan International Film Festival and the Korea Entertainment Producer’s Association. “We request a thorough investigation to determine if there were any unlawful media responses during the investigation.

“Parasite” director Boon Joon-ho led a press conference in Seoul on Friday, following the death by suicide of actor Lee Sun-kyun at the end of December.
Lee, who starred in “Parasite,” had been investigated by police in Incheon for possible recreational use of drugs and was at the center of a maelstrom of media and social media commentary for the two months prior to his death.
Backed by a formidable collection of artists, cultural organizations and trade associations, Bong called for an investigation into the police methods and for established media to reflect on the sensationalist coverage which may have contributed to Lee’s decision to take his own life. Public broadcaster Kbs was singled out for particular criticism.
“Clear legislative improvements are needed to ensure that principles and exceptions are not reversed between the human rights of suspects and the public’s right to know, and that investigative authorities...

Special Delivery (aka Special Cargo), which recently made its North American debut at Fantasia, could best be described as a female-fronted cross between The Transporter and Leon the Professional. Eun-ha is a courier working for Baek whose scrap yard is a front for a service delivering “anything the post office will not”.
That includes Kim Du-Sik a former baseball player caught in a gambling scandal and trying to dodge the mob and the police. But when the mob gets to him before she can Eun-ha finds herself with his young son Seo-won and a key fob that unlocks a 30,000,000 bank account in her car. She also has an army of goons led by corrupt cop Jo Kyung-Pil who will do anything to get it back on her trail.

In the final minutes of Apple TV+’s WeCrashed, the ousted co-founders of WeWork, Adam and Rebekah Neumann (played by Jared Leto and Anne Hathaway), appear to have landed on top even after leading their company to a failed IPO. They’re shown jetting off to the Dead Sea, in Israel, for a family vacation — with millions in their pocket. But in an ironic twist, the show actually ends with the couple rubbing salt water out of their eyes after learning that they won’t receive a penny of the payout they thought they were getting to leave the company.

While this review of Train to Busan come after the initial hype of its release, it is one of those movies that just has to be raved about. In a horror industry that sometimes feels a little drowned in zombie movies, Train to Busan proves there is still some life left in the rotting corpses of the dead.
When overworked Seok-woo (Yoo Gong) decides to take his daughter Soo-an (Soo-an Kim) back to her mother’s to celebrate her birthday, they take the train from Seoul to Busan. With outbursts of violence and riots breaking out though, it seems that the train trip may not be as peaceful as he would have hoped.

Hill of Freedom
Written and directed by Sang-soo Hong
South Korea, 2014
For those unfamiliar with the work of South Korean auteur Hong Sang-soo, his movies typically go something like this: some demotic people get together and drink a lot, and they talk about their menial lives and discuss the profundities of nothing in particular, and in between those moments nothing happens. Sometimes there’s a dog. And it’s hysterical.
Hill of Freedom (which is not, as its title might suggest, a war film, should you make that false assumption) offers a 66-minute distillation of the essence of Sang-soo. It prominently features his masterfully static, unshowy shots of people talking, and his frequent, (purportedly) arbitrary zoom interruptions to capture the malaise and euphoria of everyday relationships. Here, he’s flensed the fat (not that there’s ever much fat in his films) and left us a dauntless display of virtuoso banality.
