Opening theatrically on November 1, 2024, Absolution is the latest action extravaganza starring Liam Neeson as a vengeful one-person wrecking crew. However, those entering the film blind expecting the same tried-and-true Neeson revenge formula will be surprised by the artistic flourishes that separate it from the pack.

Although Neeson fans saw a similar heightened aesthetic in Cold Pursuit, also directed by Hans Petter Moland, Absolution focuses more on artistic vision through stunning cinematography, frigid atmosphere, unforgettable music, and measured pacing. The result allows Neeson to give a more nuanced, pensive performance that is different enough to attract new and old fans.

Liam Neeson made a name for himself as an action star quite late in his career, and it seems that he is almost ready to close the book on that part of his life in the near future. Having delivered audience-pleasing performances in movies such as Taken, The Ice Road, and Cold Pursuit, fans should make the most of his latest movie, Absolution, as it could be one of his last action roles.

While Neeson spent many years dabbling in dramas and rom-coms, 2009 revenge thriller Taken changed all that forever, turning the Irish actor into a surprising action star overnight. In a new interview with People, he first recalled how something about that movie just registered with audiences. Neeson explained:

Liam Neeson has revealed that he's retiring from action movies. The 72-year old actor, a beloved figure of the genre, has cited the physical demands of the roles - saying that some of the stunts will soon become too difficult to portray convincingly.

Neeson, who is from Northern Ireland, began his acting career with a role in the 1978 film Pilgrim's Progress. His first notable role was in Steven Spielberg's Schindler's List, earning his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor at the age of 41. Neeson went on to be introduced to the Star Wars universe as a Jedi master Qui-Gon Jinn in 1999's The Phantom Menace.

It took 118 days of marching and negotiating for the actors’ union to reach a tentative deal with the Hollywood Studios Wednesday evening. After a slow but steady restart of talks on a new contract, negotiations between SAG-AFTRA and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) are expected to “ramp up” and explore deeper issues and sticking points in the bargaining agreement, three insiders with knowledge of the studio side of negotiations told TheWrap.

Fran Drescher supporters have held on to two more national board seats as the SAG-AFTRA elections wrap up later this week. Incumbent Bill Mootos has been reelected in New England, and incumbent Mel MacKaron has been reelected in New Mexico.

With only four of the union’s 25 local races to be decided, it now looks more and more likely that Drescher’s ruling Unite for Strength party and its affiliates will continue to hold a majority of the 80 National board members, which includes the 10 national officers, no matter who wins the national presidency – Drescher or Matthew Modine. Local elections in Los Angeles and New York, where 23 national board seats are still up for grabs, will determine the balance of power. Those races, and the campaigns for national president and secretary-treasurer, will conclude Thursday.

In New England, Mootos defeated Chuck Slavin by a 2-to-1 margin – 469 votes to 225. Slavin was endorsed by Modine’s MembershipFirst slate.

The film, which depicts the story of an underdog American lacrosse team, was directed by Steve Rash (The Buddy Holly Story, Bring It On 3 & 4) and opens in limited engagements in the U.S. on May 18th, expanding with a wider national and Canadian release on June 1st.
