Austin – My first full day at the 2024 SXSW fest was slow to get going, only because my flight came in late Saturday night and I decided to go downtown and partake of a late get together event (it’s about the networking). So after registering on Sunday morning I went through the creativity expo, checked the VR exhibit, and went to my first screening, the Independent TV Pilot Program.

Chicago – The names “Tj & Dave” are legion in the Chicago entertainment scene. The improvisation duo – T.J. Jagodowski and David Pasquesi – are improv performers who heighten the status of the city as a comedic destination. Now they’re featured in a indie TV pilot that will premiere at SXSW 2024 entitled “Bettendorf Talks.”
The show – produced by Shane Simmons and directed by Jack C. Newell – is a sharp and smart “show within a show” and a workplace comedy regarding the newest (and most unlikely) local talk show to come out of the titular Midwestern Quad City. Hosted by the “has been” comedy duo T.J. Jagodowski and David Pasquesi (who star as caricatures of themselves), the two attempt to mount a hit show in search of a sliver in their former glory. Other featured performers include Tim Kazurinsky, Sadieh Rifal, Brian King. Cassie Kramer, Nnamdi Ngwe, Emma Pope and Ike Reilly.

One cannot understate the strange cultural dominance Hugh Wilson's 1984 comedy "Police Academy" held over the pop zeitgeist throughout the 1980s. Clearly a child of "Animal House," "Police Academy" was a traditional snobs-vs.-slobs comedy that pitted winking wiseacres against their stern commanding officers at a police school in an unnamed city. I've long had a theory that the "Police Academy" movies take place in Metropolis, the city where Superman lives. With Superman taking care of major crimes, the local police force would likely become complacent, unused to enforcing the law.
None of the "Police Academy" movies were well-reviewed, recognized by critics as crass, dumb, and low-brow. This is a series that banks on misogyny, offensive stereotypes, and a lot of crotch/sex humor. There is no wit to the "Police Academy" movies. Roger Ebert famously gave the first film zero stars, citing merely how dreadfully unfunny and uninspired it is.

Bill Murray apparently doesn’t like it when somebody sits in his seat.
Seth Green recalled a time Murray dangled him over a trash can and left him in tears when he appeared on “Saturday Night Live” as a nine-year-old kid.
The now-48-year-old actor was appearing in a skit about the Christmas holidays at the time, when he was hanging out in the green room and watching some TV.
Green joked during a “Good Mythical Morning” YouTube clip, “Bill Murray, as everybody knows, is great with kids!”

Chicago – With the major league baseball playoffs on the horizon, there is no better way to celebrate than a screening of the ballgame-themed TV pilot “Vendors,” created by Christopher Biewer, directed by Joel Murray and featuring Biewer, Kim DeJesus, Tim Kazurinsky, Emo Philips and former Chicago Cub Ryan Dempster. Chicago – The topic of cancer is rarely heroic, and as we know mostly concludes tragically. But the new teen comedy “Hope Springs Eternal” turns the Big C on its ear, and features up-and-coming young actor Mia Rose Frampton to take it on. The film is light and breezy, with nods to John Hughes, absurdist teen indoctrinations and the celebration of music in life.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Written with a nice light balance by Stephanie Mickus (her debut) and directed by Chicagoan Jack C. Newell, “Hope Springs Eternal” is tight storytelling and brisk comedy. Frampton keeps it alive with her expressive optimism in the main role, and is able to handle both the light and darkness of the “C” without being maudlin. The cast is top drawer and seems to be having a good time… the highlight being a Hughes-like “mean girl” coterie who have a habit of dressing alike. This is a great cheer-us-up film,...

Chicago – He has portrayed the reliable firefighter Joe Cruz for six seasons on NBC-tv’s “Chicago Fire”… Joe Minoso both plays that role and actually lives in Chicago now. Before his stint on “Fire,” he had completed a short film for local filmmaker Ben-Hur Uribe, “Alonso, The Dream and the Call,” which has just been released for Amazon Prime download.
“Alonso, The Dream and the Call,” although completed several years ago, seems ripped from today’s headlines. Minoso portrays Alonso, a Latino immigrant living in Chicago and working long hours in construction to take care of his wife and kids. When a persistent cough won’t go away, the insurance-less Alonso has no choice but to wait it out in the emergency room, jeopardizing his work and family time. The film also features a cameo from Chicago actor and “Saturday Night Live” veteran Tim Kazurinsky.

Former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Tim Kazurinsky recently released a video he shot on his mobile phone of Prince performing “Let’s Go Crazy” at the private, star-studded after-party for SNL’s 40th anniversary that happened last year. Prince charmingly altered the first spoken lyric, introducing the song by saying, “Dearly, inebriated,” before launching into the infectious hit. The turn of phrase was an appropriate one as a drunken Jimmy Fallon can be spotted stage right, thrashing to the epic performance, and at one point does some backup singing. Maya Rudolph also appears dancing on the video. Also Read: Fans Angry Over Silly.

Last night, LeBron James came as close as any player has in 46 years (since Jerry West in '69) to winning the NBA Finals Mvp for a losing team. What he did in carrying a team of scrubs and/or Knicks castoffs to within two games of a championship was otherworldly, not just for his own play, but for the complete ineptitude of his supporting cast whenever he wasn't on the floor. It had me wondering if there was a TV equivalent. I'm not talking about a great performance in an otherwise bad show, because we've seen plenty of those (Matthew Perry in "Studio 60," for instance), but a Hall of Fame performance that transforms a show that would otherwise be unwatchable into something seemingly great in its own right. On the eve of its 40th anniversary special (though the anniversary itself isn't until October), what is left to say about "Saturday Night Live"? There have been multiple books written about the show, several documentaries, countless essays — riding the never-ending roller-coaster between "Saturday Night Dead" and "Saturday Night Lives Again!" — best-ofs, worst-ofs, and every other kind of list you can think of. I don't know that anything I write over the next few pages will provide new insight into one of the most influential comedy shows ever made, but I wondered if you could tell the story of the show — through good times and bad, through revolutions and evolutions and retrenchments — by looking at its sketches. I wound up picking 21 in all: some among the show's most famous, some obscure but important. These aren't meant as a definitive breakdown of the best "SNL" ever had to offer, but as a...

There’s the one night stand, and there’s the long-term relationship.
Both have their place in the modern world of dating, but can the former become the latter, the heat of the moment transforming into the ever-burning fire?
It’s a perennial question, one that introduces a host of others: does it matter who says “I love you” first? How long should a couple wait before moving in together? When should best friends get involved, and should it be with positive encouragement or by playing devil’s advocate? (And does it matter if the friends’ romantic lives carry their own problems?)
In the insightful, hilarious romantic comedy About Last Night– arriving just in time to become the latest Valentine’s Day movie classic — four Los Angeles singles get a thorough workout in the ups and downs of today’s dating world. On yet another night of playing wingman to...

Being a property owner can be difficult. Bad tenants, old buildings that require constant maintenance and significant expense, and carnivorous molemen that come up through old Chicago Prohibition tunnels. Wait, what? Yep, subterranean humanoid underground dwellers. SHUDs maybe? Nah, let’s just stick with The Moleman of Belmont Avenue. It sounds more B movie anyway, and what would any B movie worth its salt be without the anti –hero, or even better, a duo of anti-heroes.
Enter Marion and Jarmon Mugg, two brothers that inherited a brownstone from their mother, and seemed to be trapped in a situation that they neither want, or are any good at. Their longtime tenants are leaving them, the building is falling into disrepair, and the boys just can’t seem to catch a break. When tenant’s pets start disappearing, something sinister seems to be afoot.

Saturday Night Live has been a part of American culture for five decades and, in that time, the show has done a handful of gay characters and stories (mostly male-focused). When Lgbt themes are part of a show, rarely are any actual Lgbt people a part of it. That's why the addition of Kate McKinnon to the SNL cast has been such a positive force for not only the gay community, but for viewers who look to the show to have its finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist. Like it or not, gay people are part of pop culture, too.

Chicago – Bring up the immortal classic “A Christmas Carol,” by author Charles Dickens, then bring up how many film and TV versions have been done using its basic story. After a half hour of listing every conceivable production, a gay version won’t be found. “Scrooge & Marley” is the new film that takes care of that category. The premiere was last week in Chicago at the Music Box Theatre.

"Scrooge & Marley," is a modern adaptation of Charles Dickens's holiday classic, "A Christmas Carol," due to hit theaters later this month. While the plot remains the same, this version retells the story with a "gay sensibility" that "will appeal to audiences of all persuasions." The movie stars openly gay actor David Pevsner as Ben Scrooge and "Saturday Night Live" alum Tim Kazurinsky as the ghost of Jacob Marley.
And those aren't the only Lgbt-friendly parts of the film. Jason Gould, openly gay son of Barbra Streisand, performs the film's theme and special end credit song, "Amazing."
Get your first listen of the song:
Gould recently shared the stage with his mother on her much-celebrated "Barbra: Back to Brooklyn" concert, singing "How Deep Is The Ocean?" in the newly built Barclays Center.
"Amazing" will be featured on the film's soundtrack and can be purchased on iTunes later this month.

Chicago – Director Jack C. Newell ended up meeting one of his great collaborators while taking classes at Columbia College Chicago. His future filmmaking partner turned out to not be a fellow peer, but his teacher, Ron Falzone. Together, they made the acclaimed short, “Typing,” about two Hollywood screenwriters whose brainstorming session draws inspiration from the clacking of typewriter keys in the next room.
Newell and Falzone’s first feature effort is “Close Quarters,” an endearing and insightful collection of parallel vignettes set in a Chicago coffee shop. Baristas Abby (Erica Unger) and Barry (Seth Unger) flirt with the possibility of long-term romance while observing the dysfunctional relationships of their customers. Two friends, Patrick (Tj Jagodowski) and Olivia (Kate Duffy), chat upstairs while their respective partners, Dina (Holly Laurent) and Cary (Dave Pasquesi), make love in the downstairs bathroom.
