Although he has built a great career in comedy, Seth Green, who co-created adult animated comedy show Robot Chicken, had an initiation into the industry that involves a dark encounter with none other than SNL alum Bill Murray. Green recalled meeting the Ghostbusters legend in the hallways of Studio 8 while doing Saturday Night Live, and it wasn't pretty. Green has talked about this incident in the past, but now he shares that the advice he got afterward was the only thing he needed to go on.
The actor of franchises like Austin Powers spoke to ComicBook about the 20th anniversary of Robot Chicken, the stop-motion sketch show he co-created with Matthew Senreich for Cartoon Network's Adult Swim. Green was asked about the incident when he got into an argument with comedy legend Bill Murray when he was just nine years old, and he was supposed to appear on...

The early 1980s were a tough time for Saturday Night Live. After Lorne Michaels and the remaining members of the original Not Ready for Prime Time Players left at the end of Season Five, an all-new cast starred in a truncated Season Six before they were all fired — save for two breakout stars: Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo.
With the departing cast members went new showrunner Jean Doumanian, who was replaced by Dick Ebersol for Seasons Seven through 10 (Michaels returned in Season 11). Ebersol was a controversial figure at SNL, as the show struggled to regain its cultural relevance during his reign and suffered from frequent cast turnover.
Smack-dab in the middle of Ebersol’s run came Brad Hall, who was a cast member for all of Seasons Eight and Nine. While he was in some sketches, he mostly helmed the Weekend Update desk for a season and a half before...

Michael O’Donoghue’s second go-around as a writer for Saturday Night Live didn’t go as well as the first. Brought back after Lorne Michaels and the original cast headed out for parts unknown, O’Donoghue, the show’s new head writer, wanted to give it a flaming Viking funeral. In other words, “he wanted to destroy the show,” explained Tim Kazurinsky in the SNL oral history Live From New York.
One reason O’Donoghue believed the show should die, according to Mr. Mike: The Life and Work of Michael O’Donoghue: He thought the cast was horrible. He particularly hated Kazurinsky for his relatively tame, unassuming style (O’Donoghue believed Kazurinsky’s Second City was well past its prime) and deemed most of the cast “losers” and “shit.” There were only two performers O’Donoghue liked — Eddie Murphy, for obvious reasons, and Christine Ebersole.
Ebersole is more of a puzzle.

Legendary daytime talk show host Phil Donahue passed away last night at the age of 88 after a long illness. Donahue practically invented many conventions that are now talk-show staples, such as walking into the audience and interacting with its members. As his show took off in the 1970s, he also tackled issues that no other talk show dared touch. “If there had been no Phil Donahue Show, there would be no Oprah Winfrey show,” Winfrey said in 2002. “He was the first to acknowledge that women are interested in more than mascara tips and cake recipes — that we’re intelligent, we’re concerned about the world around us and we want the best possible lives for ourselves.”
Donahue’s signature cadence, dramatic mannerisms and audience interactions not only made for engaging TV but a go-to impression for three generations of Saturday Night Live cast members.

Austin – My first full day at the 2024 SXSW fest was slow to get going, only because my flight came in late Saturday night and I decided to go downtown and partake of a late get together event (it’s about the networking). Chicago – The names “Tj & Dave” are legion in the Chicago entertainment scene. The improvisation duo – T.J. Jagodowski and David Pasquesi – are improv performers who heighten the status of the city as a comedic destination. Now they’re featured in a indie TV pilot that will premiere at SXSW 2024 entitled “Bettendorf Talks.”
The show – produced by Shane Simmons and directed by Jack C. Newell – is a sharp and smart “show within a show” and a workplace comedy regarding the newest (and most unlikely) local talk show to come out of the titular Midwestern Quad City. Hosted by the “has been” comedy duo T.J. Jagodowski and David Pasquesi (who star as caricatures of themselves), the two attempt to mount a hit show in search of a sliver in their former glory. Other featured performers include Tim Kazurinsky, Sadieh Rifal, Brian King. Cassie Kramer, Nnamdi Ngwe, Emma Pope and Ike Reilly.

One cannot understate the strange cultural dominance Hugh Wilson's 1984 comedy "Police Academy" held over the pop zeitgeist throughout the 1980s. Clearly a child of "Animal House," "Police Academy" was a traditional snobs-vs.-slobs comedy that pitted winking wiseacres against their stern commanding officers at a police school in an unnamed city. I've long had a theory that the "Police Academy" movies take place in Metropolis, the city where Superman lives. With Superman taking care of major crimes, the local police force would likely become complacent, unused to enforcing the law.
None of the "Police Academy" movies were well-reviewed, recognized by critics as crass, dumb, and low-brow. This is a series that banks on misogyny, offensive stereotypes, and a lot of crotch/sex humor. There is no wit to the "Police Academy" movies. Roger Ebert famously gave the first film zero stars, citing merely how dreadfully unfunny and uninspired it is.

Bill Murray apparently doesn’t like it when somebody sits in his seat.
Seth Green recalled a time Murray dangled him over a trash can and left him in tears when he appeared on “Saturday Night Live” as a nine-year-old kid.

When the original Police Academy barnstormed its way into theaters in 1984, nobody had any way of knowing that this film would be a franchise with 7 films to its credit. Grossing hundreds of millions of dollars at the box office, what Police Academy achieved is nothing short of astounding. With a cast of mostly unknown character actors, this film clicked with a public who seemed to be starved for the wacky, slapstick comic situations that Police Academy so deftly offered.
Making this even more astounding is that it wasn't like 1984 was devoid of comedies. Ghostbusters and Beverly Hills Cop were both in theaters and each one of these raked in many millions of dollars. Somehow, Police Academy placed 6th on this list beating out such films as Footloose, Romancing the Stone and Splash. So how did this movie that was made for $4.5 million dollars go on to become a franchise? Well,...

Chicago – The topic of cancer is rarely heroic, and as we know mostly concludes tragically. But the new teen comedy “Hope Springs Eternal” turns the Big C on its ear, and features up-and-coming young actor Mia Rose Frampton to take it on. The film is light and breezy, with nods to John Hughes, absurdist teen indoctrinations and the celebration of music in life.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Written with a nice light balance by Stephanie Mickus (her debut) and directed by Chicagoan Jack C. Newell, “Hope Springs Eternal” is tight storytelling and brisk comedy. Frampton keeps it alive with her expressive optimism in the main role, and is able to handle both the light and darkness of the “C” without being maudlin. The cast is top drawer and seems to be having a good time… the highlight being a Hughes-like “mean girl” coterie who have a habit of dressing alike. This is a great cheer-us-up film,...

Chicago – He has portrayed the reliable firefighter Joe Cruz for six seasons on NBC-tv’s “Chicago Fire”… Joe Minoso both plays that role and actually lives in Chicago now. Before his stint on “Fire,” he had completed a short film for local filmmaker Ben-Hur Uribe, “Alonso, The Dream and the Call,” which has just been released for Amazon Prime download.
“Alonso, The Dream and the Call,” although completed several years ago, seems ripped from today’s headlines. Minoso portrays Alonso, a Latino immigrant living in Chicago and working long hours in construction to take care of his wife and kids. When a persistent cough won’t go away, the insurance-less Alonso has no choice but to wait it out in the emergency room, jeopardizing his work and family time. The film also features a cameo from Chicago actor and “Saturday Night Live” veteran Tim Kazurinsky.

Former “Saturday Night Live” cast member Tim Kazurinsky recently released a video he shot on his mobile phone of Prince performing “Let’s Go Crazy” at the private, star-studded after-party for SNL’s 40th anniversary that happened last year. Prince charmingly altered the first spoken lyric, introducing the song by saying, “Dearly, inebriated,” before launching into the infectious hit. The turn of phrase was an appropriate one as a drunken Jimmy Fallon can be spotted stage right, thrashing to the epic performance, and at one point does some backup singing. Maya Rudolph also appears dancing on the video. Also Read: Fans Angry Over Silly.

Prince brought down the house at Saturday Night Live's 40th anniversary after-party last year. The iconic pop and rock star died at age 57 Thursday at his Paisley Park studios in Minnesota. His death is under investigation. Wearing a shiny gold outfit, oversized hooded black fur vest and sunglasses, Prince had performed at the SNL 40th anniversary after-party in February in front of a slew of current and past cast members. In a video former SNL cast member Tim Kazurinsky recently posted on YouTube, he is seen performing a super hard rock version of his 1984 hit "Let's Go Crazy" before a cheering crowd. 33 years ago today, at age 7, Drew Barrymore hosted “Saturday Night Live,” making her the youngest ever host of the NBC sketch comedy show. She still holds that record today, and she’s hosted the show five additional times since. Her 1982 gig on the show came five months after the release of “E.T. the Extra-Terrestiral.” She reprised her “E.T.” role when she played a homicidal Gertie on “SNL.” Above she’s pictured in the iconic healing E.T. pose with “SNL” cast members Tim Kazurinsky, Gary Kroeger, Brad Hall and Joe Piscopo. As for the second and third youngest “SNL” hosts, Macaulay Culkin and Fred Savage hold those titles, respectively. Last night, LeBron James came as close as any player has in 46 years (since Jerry West in '69) to winning the NBA Finals Mvp for a losing team. What he did in carrying a team of scrubs and/or Knicks castoffs to within two games of a championship was otherworldly, not just for his own play, but for the complete ineptitude of his supporting cast whenever he wasn't on the floor. It had me wondering if there was a TV equivalent. I'm not talking about a great performance in an otherwise bad show, because we've seen plenty of those (Matthew Perry in "Studio 60," for instance), but a Hall of Fame performance that transforms a show that would otherwise be unwatchable into something seemingly great in its own right. I put the question out on Twitter this morning, and got some interesting responses: @sepinwall Orphan Black ... — Tormund Clientsbane (@LukeMayeux) June 17, 2015 Certainly,...

On the eve of its 40th anniversary special (though the anniversary itself isn't until October), what is left to say about "Saturday Night Live"? There have been multiple books written about the show, several documentaries, countless essays — riding the never-ending roller-coaster between "Saturday Night Dead" and "Saturday Night Lives Again!" — best-ofs, worst-ofs, and every other kind of list you can think of. I don't know that anything I write over the next few pages will provide new insight into one of the most influential comedy shows ever made, but I wondered if you could tell the story of the show — through good times and bad, through revolutions and evolutions and retrenchments — by looking at its sketches. I wound up picking 21 in all: some among the show's most famous, some obscure but important. These aren't meant as a definitive breakdown of the best "SNL" ever had to offer, but as a...

There’s the one night stand, and there’s the long-term relationship.
Both have their place in the modern world of dating, but can the former become the latter, the heat of the moment transforming into the ever-burning fire?
It’s a perennial question, one that introduces a host of others: does it matter who says “I love you” first? How long should a couple wait before moving in together? When should best friends get involved, and should it be with positive encouragement or by playing devil’s advocate? (And does it matter if the friends’ romantic lives carry their own problems?)

Saturday Night Live has been a part of American culture for five decades and, in that time, the show has done a handful of gay characters and stories (mostly male-focused). Chicago – Bring up the immortal classic “A Christmas Carol,” by author Charles Dickens, then bring up how many film and TV versions have been done using its basic story. After a half hour of listing every conceivable production, a gay version won’t be found. “Scrooge & Marley” is the new film that takes care of that category. "Scrooge & Marley," is a modern adaptation of Charles Dickens's holiday classic, "A Christmas Carol," due to hit theaters later this month. While the plot remains the same, this version retells the story with a "gay sensibility" that "will appeal to audiences of all persuasions." The movie stars openly gay actor David Pevsner as Ben Scrooge and "Saturday Night Live" alum Tim Kazurinsky as the ghost of Jacob Marley.
And those aren't the only Lgbt-friendly parts of the film. Jason Gould, openly gay son of Barbra Streisand, performs the film's theme and special end credit song, "Amazing."
