Fish out of water stories are as common as they are compelling. People relate to stories of not fitting in, but still trying to get on with their lives anyway.
At first glance, “Shaun the Sheep Movie” and “A Walk in the Woods” seem like movies that have nothing in common. One’s the latest stop-motion animated offering from Aardman, the other is a comedy starring Robert Redford and Nick Nolte. It’s an easy to make assumption that’s mostly correct.
“Shaun the Sheep Movie” stars, of course, the titular character, the clever little sheep who starred in his own show for several seasons. Shaun made his film debut in the short “A Close Shave”, and has evolved into a much more intelligent character from his beginnings.
The movie starts with innocent enough intent. Shaun wants a day where he doesn’t have to deal with the same old monotonous routine,...

The ad campaign for Ken Kwapis‘ A Walk in the Woods gives the impression that it’s a geriatric version of last year’s Wild: two geezers hike the Appalachian Trail and discover the True Meaning of Life along the way. And there’s a bit of that, to be sure, but the overall tone is comedic rather than revelatory — Grumpy Old Hikers, if you will. I’m not familiar with the memoir on which the movie is based, but I think comedy was the right approach. It’s a decent entertainment, even if there are a few dropped threads and jokes that don’t quite hit the target.

Based on the best-selling novel by Bill Bryson, A Walk in the Woods stars Robert Redford as Bill, a travel writer who has returned to the United States after spending a number of years in Britain. One day he gets the idea to hike all 2,200 miles of the Appalachian Trail, which extends from Georgia to Maine. His wife, however, is not about to let him travel it alone, so Bill calls his old friend Stephen Katz (played by Nick Nolte) to come along for the journey. What starts out as a relaxing trip, however, soon turns into something quite different, as Bill and Stephen find themselves getting into all sorts of trouble.

The lax, lame A Walk in the Woods is a road movie without a road, a journey of self-discovery without discovery, and a tale of friendship without any chemistry. Based on travel writer Bill Bryson’s 1998 best-seller about his attempts to hike the Appalachian Trail in his late 40s, it stars two far older actors whose energies can either be complementary or mismatched: The always understated Robert Redford plays Bryson, and Nick Nolte, one of our most wonderful scenery-chewers, plays Stephen Katz, Bryson’s gruff, shaggy old friend from Iowa who is the only one to answer the writer’s call for a traveling companion. Together, these two men — one an intellectual who is feeling the creeping approach of his own mortality, the other a walking human disaster zone — spend months attempting to make their way up the trail, which runs from Georgia to Maine. That could be the setup...

The director of the Robert Redford-Nick Nolte comedy A Walk in the Woods learned hands-on during the shoot that Nolte's upper-body strength is as impressive than ever. Woods, which hits theaters on Wed., Sept. 2, centers on writer Bill Bryson (Redford) and estranged pal Stephen Katz's effort to hike the Appalachian Trail. Based on the best-selling 1998 memoir by travel writer Bryson, it also stars Emma Thompson, Mary Steenburgen, Kristen Schall and Nick Offerman. With Labor Day less than a week away, it’s not too late to explore the “great outdoors”, at least at your local multiplex. This past Winter, Reese Witherspoon earned an Oscar nomination in the true life tale of a woman, Cheryl Strayed, who recently hiked the long, arduous Pacific Crest Trail all by herself in the drama Wild. Her journey seemed to be a way of exorcising her own personal demons. This new true life nature hike isn’t quite so somber, but it’s equally daunting. Around the time that Reese was hitting the road (cinema-wise), Robert Redford was also going solo, but on an aquatic voyage (which turned into a fight for survival) in All Is Lost. Now he’s on land and on foot at the East Coast near equivalent, the Appalachian Trail. But the Sundance Kid is more than twice Reese’s age. Does he stand a chance there?...

In the altogether pleasant A Walk in the Woods, Robert Redford smiles and cracks wise as he hasn't done on screen for many years. It's a marvelous, if wrinkly, sight to behold. The movie, an adaptation of Bill Bryson's 1998 bestselling memoir, is loose and jocular and lighter than air. Bryson (Redford) is a well-recognized author who decides one day to hike the Appalachian Trail -- a hiking trail in the Eastern United States that runs some 2,000 miles (3,500 kilometers) -- without really knowing why. His wife (Emma Thompson) insists that he not travel alone, and so, after many turn-downs, his old friend Stephen Katz (Nick Nolte) volunteers to accompany him. Katz arrives at Bryson's home in New Hampshire, overweight and out-of-shape. He's a...

"Try not to die, okay?"
And, with those five little words, Catherine Bryson (Emma Thompson) sends husband Bill Bryson (Robert Redford) on an epic Appalachian journey alongside one of his oldest -- but estranged -- friends, Stephen Katz (Nick Nolte), in "A Walk in the Woods." In this exclusive clip, Thompson and Redford -- both Academy Award winners, by the way -- share a tender exchange before Redford sets off on his own, delivering all the feels to anyone who's ever had to say goodbye to a soulmate.
"A Walk in the Woods," an adaptation of Bryson's best-selling memoir of the same name, chronicles the ups and downs of the unlikely duo's well-intended hike along the Appalachian Trail, which starts in Georgia and ends in Maine. That's one hell of a walk. As you can imagine, things do not go as planned. But, then again, nothing in life ever does.

After having two smash hits together — Butch Cassidy And The Sundance Kid (1968) and The Sting (1973) — Robert Redford and Paul Newman had often talked about reteaming but waited decades to finally find the right property. Redford, with his producer’s hat on, thought he had found it in the 1998 Bill Bryson book A Walk In The Woods, which chronicles the late-in-life hike Bryson took on with a friend named Stephen Katz along the 2200-mile Appalachian Trail. After battling the high seas in 2013’s All is Lost, and threatening all the president’s supermen in last year’s Captain America: Winter Soldier, Robert Redford would seem more than deserving of a little down time. For the prolific actor, producer, and festival head, taking a break meant finally filming passion project A Walk in the Woods, an adaptation of Bill Bryson’s 1998 travelogue memoir. And while a movie about hiking 2,200 miles along the Appalachian Trail sounds anything but restful, A Walk in the Woods proves to be as taxing and eventful as an afternoon nap.
The book provides a presumably loose map for screenwriters Bill Holderman and Michael Arndt (nom de plum Rick Kerb) to follow. The real Bryson trekked through America’s northeast while still in his ‘40s; the Bryson played by Redford is a septuagenarian. Few would argue that the 79-year-old Redford has aged poorly,...

Ken Kwapis has long been a prolific director of both film and television, having helmed high-grossing movies including "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" and critically-acclaimed sitcoms such as "The Office." His newest film, the hiking buddy comedy "A Walk in the Woods," brings the director to Sundance along with his A-list cast, which includes Mary Steenburgen, Nick Nolte and Sundance founder Robert Redford. What's your film about, in 140 characters or less?“A Walk in the Woods” is an adaptation of Bill Bryson's 1998 travel memoir, in which Bryson recounts his attempt to hike the 2,100-mile Appalachian Trail. Bryson's hiking partner is his childhood friend Stephen Katz. Neither man is in prime shape; indeed, this trek could not be more ill-advised.Now, what's it Really about? The story is really about the nature of male friendship. Bryson and Katz, who were once the closest of friends, had a falling-out during a misadventure in Europe.

A human being who looks better at his current age than I ever will in my entire life, Robert Redford has a sprightly screen presence that has carried him through thick and thin, even brutal storms that live-or-die on his charisma (Aka “All is Lost,” one of the best films of 2013). Here's another installment featuring Joe Dante's reviews from his stint as a critic for Film Bulletin circa 1969-1974. Our thanks to Video Watchdog and Tim Lucas for his editorial embellishments! Exploitable potpourri of sex, comedy, action with high school setting has enough funny stuff to draw and amuse youth trade in ballyhoo markets and drive‑ins. Rating: R.
Although The Student Teachers follows the New World "student nurse" formula almost slavishly (pretty girls, lotsa nudity, low‑comedy plotting, violent black subplot dragged in by the heels), it stacks up as a nifty little programmer by virtue of fast pacing and an engagingly breezy comic style. Where aggressively promoted, it holds strong lures for the general youth trade and should prove an especially appealing drive‑in item.

Robert Redford has been trying for years to get an adaptation of Bill Bryson’s hilarious comic memoir A Walk In The Woods on screen. Originally planned as a reunion for Redford and his Sundance pal Paul Newman, that idea was thwarted by Newman’s death. And after a long trek through development, he’s finally found a director to do it his way. In short, he’ll do it himself.Nick Nolte is currently on to co-star in the film, which will adapt Bryson’s tome (subtitle: Rediscovering America On The Appalachian Trail), about attempting to conquer at least part of the 2000-mile Trail with his friend "Stephen Katz" (a pseudonym for Matthew Angerer). In the years since he first optioned the book, Redford has been through several directorial possibilities, including Barry Levinson, Richard Linklater and, as they told the Empire Pod-team last year, Little Miss Sunshine duo Valerie Faris and Jonathan Dayton.

Richard Linklater is set to direct A Walk In the Woods, based on Bill Bryson’s memoir. Robert Redford, who is producing, will star and Nick Nolte will most likely costar.
Walk is “a comic tale with travel overtones and involves two boyhood friends who go their separate ways and come back later in life for an outdoor adventure. In Bryson’s tome, the writer and his pseudonymously named friend Stephen Katz try to walk the Appalachian Trail, in the process making sly observations about the world around them and their own lives.”
Several directors, including Chris Columbus and Barry Levinson, attempted to make the films over the years, but nothing aver came to fruition.
Personally I think this film is perfect for Linklater. If all goes as planned shooting will commence in the fall

Robert Redford might have been able to bring the Sundance Film Festival to life, and snag a job overseeing the tricky organisation that is S.H.I.E.L.D., but his cinematic white whale appears to be Bill Bryson’s A Walk In The Woods. Now Redford might have the right man for the director’s chair, with Richard Linklater set to come aboard.Adapting Bryson’s beloved travelogue about two childhood friends – the writer and his pal Stephen Katz, who try to walk the Appalachian trail while trading observations about life in general and their own in particular – has been a passion project for Redford since at least 2005.He originally planned it as a reunion with Butch Cassidy/The Sting co-star Paul Newman, an effort curtailed by Newman’s death in 2008. Nick Nolte is taking over the part, but development has proceeded at a glacial pace with writers...

Six years ago Robert Redford got the idea to acquire the rights to Bill Bryson’s hilarious comedic travelogue A Walk in the Woods with the intention of making a kind of last hurrah reunion picture with his great friend Paul Newman. Having read the book, kind of a less serious Into The Wild with less death it’s clear to see why as at the heart of it is a funny buddy road-trip between two very different old friends who are constantly at each others throats.
Bryson’s book is more like a non-fiction diary where the reader follows his journey on the Appalachian Trail, a 2,000 miles trek mostly in the wilderness between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine and is thought to be completed by less than 30% of the serious trekkers who attempt it.

Buried in an is-he-isn't-he piece about Robert Redford's possible Jackie Robinson biopic (which we mention elsewhere this morning), the La Times has news that Redford may soon be teaming up with Nick Nolte for Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods.Bryson's humorous travelogue involves the author and his overweight, recovering alcoholic friend Stephen Katz making laboriously poor progress walking the Appalachian Trail. They wrestle with their equipment and skip large sections, but still manage to hike 500 miles, and the narrative is interspersed with customary Bryson-type musings on American history and ecology, and reconnecting with his homeland after some time living in the UK.Redford has been attempting to get the film set up since 2005, initially conceiving it as a Butch and Sundance reunion for himself and Paul Newman. Sadly, that's no longer possible of course, but we can hardly think of a better fit for the blow-hard Katz than Nolte.
