So what happened before Sergei Eisenstein’s trip to Mexico?

Released in 2015, the film centered on the acclaimed Soviet director and his alleged homosexual affair with a local guide while filming in Mexico in the 1930s.

Top 100 Most Anticipated Foreign Films of 2016: #37. Peter Greenaway’s Walking to Paris
Walking to Paris

Director: Peter Greenaway

Writer: Peter Greenaway

Before he turns 80 years old and cinema dies, auteur Peter Greenaway has announced his plans to finish up thirty projects in the next seven years or so. He’s whittling away at his goal, last year unveiling his first title in a planned trilogy on Sergei Eisenstein at Berlin, the bombastic and beautiful Eisenstein in Guanajuato. With planned projects on Dutch painter Hieronymous Bosch and more Eisenstein on the way, Greenaway takes a detour in 2016 with Walking to Paris, a portrait of Romanian sculptor Constantin Brancusi, who walked from Bucharest to Paris in 1903 and 1904. British actor Emun Elliott (who has appeared in Ridley Scott’s Prometheus and Exodus: Gods and Kings) stars as Brancusi, while Swiss actress Carla Juri (of the infamous Wetlands (review), 2013) and Scottish actor Gianni Capaldi are also in the cast.

Cast: Emun Elliott, Carla Juri, Gianni Capaldi

Switzerland (1955)
Greenaway plans second Eisenstein film
Switzerland (1955)
Peter Greenaway is to return to the legendary Russian film director Sergey Eisenstein for a second feature, The Eisenstein Handshakes, this time to be located in Switzerland, after the Mexican-set Eisenstein in Guanajato.

Greenaway was in Locarno’s neighbouring town of Ascona on Monday to make an appearance at a showcase of Soviet and Russian films presented by the state film archive Gosfilmofond.

¨During our investigations on Eisenstein [for Eisenstein In Guanajato], we discovered two extraordnary things which make it very relevant to Switzerland,¨ Greenaway explained.

¨The very first film festival in world was created in 1929 in La Sarraz, close to the French border, and it was attended by many important experimental film-makers of the time. And the most important guest was Eisenstein who came to Switzerland with his assistant Alexandrov and his wonderful cameraman Tissé.

¨But what is also extraordinary is that the very first film ever made in Switzerland was directed by Eisenstein, so we have...

Greenaway Eats "Food for Love"
Peter Greenaway ("The Pillow Book," "The Baby of Macon") is planning to direct "Food for Love", a new film adaptation of German author Thomas Mann‘s "Death in Venice" says Screen Daily.

The book follows a revered author named Gustav who is staying in Venice and becomes obsessed handsome young teenager named Tadzio.

As a cholera epidemic engulfs the city, Gustav sacrifices his dignity and ultimately his life to this infatuation, despite the pair never talking or touching - only exchanging glances. Luchino Visconti adapted the book previously in 1971.

Filming will take place partly in Venice. Kees Kasander will produce and claims the tone is akin to Greenaway's most famous work "The Cook, The Thief, His Wife & Her Lover".

Peter Greenaway To Direct 'Food For Love' An Adaptation Of 'Death In Venice'; Finishing 'Goltzius' For Cannes
It's been five years since "Nightwatching," the last feature length effort from Peter Greenaway. And for a guy who declared "cinema is dead" right around the same time, he certainly has a lot left to say within the art form. Screen Daily reports that not only is Greenaway embarking on "Food For Love" an adaptation of Thomas Mann's classic "Death In Venice," he's got a plan that could seem him make a movie per year for the next decade. The director is currently finishing up "Goltzius and the Pelican Company" starring F. Murray Abraham which is being readied for Cannes, after which he'll tackle "Food For Love" with shooting to start in November. Given the director's own unique style which of late has reserved his movies strictly for hardcore arthouse buffs, his producer Kees Kasander reveals that "Food For Love" could be his most accessible film in nearly two.

Daily Briefing. Ecm Remembers Angelopoulos, Greenaway in Venice, More
Two days after we tragically, absurdly lost Theo Angelopoulos to a motorcycle accident late last month, Ecm Records posted a remembrance I've come across just today, thanks to a pointer from Robert Koehler. In a text Angelopoulos contributed to the collection Horizons Touched: The Music of Ecm, he wrote, "There are moments when you hear a piece of music, have a chance conversation with someone or read a text and you get the unexpected feeling of communication at a deeper level, of a common language. In Eleni Karaindrou, I found a musical language which seemed to come into being at the same time as the images in my films. Sounds that were mine before they were born. This is why the way we collaborate has — or at least I think it has — its special characteristics."

Ecm founder Manfred Eicher said in a 1990 interview, "Angelopoulos looks at things in silence. His sense of time,...

Antonia Bird (Priest, Face) is directing one of the features Kees Kasander -- Peter Greenaway's regular producer -- is making with London-based Film & Music Entertainment and post-production house Molinare. The 4-film slate will cost $17.5 million to produce. One of the films, The Domino Effect, is already in the can and editing in the Netherlands. “This isn’t one of those fantasy slates that you read about,” F&Me co-principal Mike Downey tells me. “All 4 films are pretty much financed. We’re just bringing the last slice in.” Bird will helm Cross My Mind in early 2011. UK Film Council, Screen Yorkshire and the Netherlands Film Fund are backing this erotic thriller, which plays out between a married, older woman and a young wounded, blinded soldier – but the woman is not who he thinks she is... 'Hurt Locker' tops BAFTA Awards with six wins
"The Hurt Locker" isn't feeling any pain right now.

Following on the heels of an original screenplay prize at the Writers Guild of America awards, "The Hurt Locker" took an impressive six awards home from the 2010 Orange British Academy Film Awards, the British equivalent of the Oscars, on Sunday (Feb. 21).

The Iraq war drama won for best film, best director for Kathryn Bigelow, original screenplay for Mark Boal, cinematography, editing and sound.

"The Hurt Locker" has been on a roll lately. Besides the WGA, the Directors Guild of America also recognized Bigelow with their top prize. With the Oscars just around the corner, it bodes well for "The Hurt Locker."

Of interest to the "Twilight" fans is Kristen Stewart's win for the Orange Rising Star Award. Stewart, who plays Bella in the "Twilight" saga and stars in the Sundance hits "The Runaways" and "Welcome to the Rileys," beat out Carey Mulligan,...

British Academy Film Awards: The Winners
As the great and good are quickly ushered out of London's salubrious Royal Opera House, shoved into the nearest waiting limo and whisked to their respective after-show parties, the time has come to tally and take stock of the big winners at this year's British Academy Film Awards.

As with all of the major films awards of 2010 thus far, the big battle at this year's Baftas was between James Cameron's Avatar and his ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow's The Hurt Locker and the big winner on the night was Ms Bigelow who blew away all the competition with a grand total of six awards including (surprisingly but brilliantly) Best Film and Best Director. Avatar, meanwhile, was relegated to two relatively minor awards for Best Production Design and Best Special Effects.

Quite how this will affect the runners and the riders for this year's Oscars remains to be seen but it...

2010 BAFTA Nominations
The nominations for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts awards were announced this morning, and leading with eight each are An Education, Avatar, and The Hurt Locker. The line-up looks much like what we’ve seen in earlier awards with the obvious skew towards British-born selections like Carey Mulligan, underrated comedy In the Loop, and first time director Duncan Jones.

Notable snubs include Bright Star shut out in every category but costume, Avatar missing a spot for screenplay to The Hangover, and Sam Rockwell for Moon.

Winners will be announced February 21. Here are the nominees:

BAFTA Nominees Announced; Avatar, The Hurt Locker, and An Education Lead with 8 Nominations
The Brits certainly like our flicks with Avatar and The Hurt Locker scoring eight nominations each from the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA). However, they didn’t overlook one of their own accomplished films with An Education also grabbing eight nominations. But what’s really impressive about the BAFTA nominations isn’t where they’ll most likely overlap with the Oscar nominations, but where they’re going to diverge. District 9 has seven nominations and matches Avatar in every category except Best Picture and Best Director (but it also has a Best Screenplay nomination, while Avatar does not). I am a little surprised that in their Best Supporting Actor category, they overlooked Peter Capaldi for In the Loop, but you have to love a country where Andy Serkis can get nominated for Best Actor (that’s not meant ironically; it truly is great–we should’ve nominated...

'Avatar', 'An Education' and 'The Hurt Locker' Lead 2010 BAFTA Nominations
Photo: Orange British Academy Film Awards Today the nominations for the 2010 Orange British Academy Film Awards were announced and Avatar, An Education and The Hurt Locker lead the way with eight nominations each followed closely by District 9 with seven and Inglourious Basterds and Up In the Air each pulling in six each. The only film not amongst the nomination leaders that was nominated for Best Film is Lionsgate's Precious: Based on the Novel 'Push' by Sapphire, which did manage four nominations.

Looking over the nominations there are a few that stand out as breaking from the norm, such as Neill Blomkamp (District 9) and Lone Scherfig (An Education) both getting directorial nominations alongside James Cameron, Kathryn Bigelow and Quentin Tarantino. Both District 9 and An Education have enjoyed plenty of love during the awards season, but this is a nice bonus that both Blomkamp and Scherfig should be proud of.

2010 BAFTA Nominations Announced
2009 was an amazing year for British film. The BAFTA longlist has James Cameron’s Avatar and Jason Reitman’s Up In The Air go up against Tarantino’s glorious Basterds and our pick of the year, Duncan Jones’ sublime Moon, we also have A Single Man and An Education showcasing a wealth of talent.

In The Loop is picking up screenwriting awards and Carey Mulligan’s disappointment at the Golden Globes earlier this week may be short lived. Will Avatar leaves will a handful of golden faces to go with its solar system of globes? That so many great films are being placed under a BAFTA shaped spotlight is a testament to the variety and capability of the actors, directors and crews working today.

The BAFTA shortlist is a clear indication that there is much to celebrate in the industry and while the winners may divide critics and audiences when...

BAFTA unveils award nominations
Peter Sarsgaard and Carey Mulligan in An Education (2009)
London -- James Cameron's "Avatar," Kathryn Bigelow's "The Hurt Locker" and Lone Scherfig's "An Education" emerged blinking with eight nominations apiece for this year's Orange British Film Awards including noms for best film and best director.

The big surprise on this year's list is the Peter Jackson produced South African set sci-fi "District 9" which secured seven nominations, one ahead of this year's six times nominees "Inglourious Basterds" and "Up in the Air."

To win this year's best film award, recent Golden Globe king Cameron and his other worldly blue people drama will have to see off competition from "Precious: Based on the novel Push by Sapphire" and "Up In The Air" as well as "The Hurt Locker" and "An Education."

Tahar Rahim in Un profeta (2009)
'Prophet' tops European film noms with six
Tahar Rahim in Un profeta (2009)
Cologne, Germany – Jacques Audiard's "A Prophet," Danny Boyle's Oscar champ "Slumdog Millionaire" and Palme d'Or winner "The White Ribbon" from Austrian director Michael Haneke are the front-runners in a crowded field at this year's European Film Awards.

Audiard's hard-hitting French prison tale, Haneke's austere black-and-white period piece and Boyle's Mumbai-based story of rags-to-riches all picked up nominations in the European film, European director, European screenwriter and European cinematographer categories.

"A Prophet" leads the pack with six nominations, including ones for star Tahar Rahim in the European actor category and an Efa Prix d'Excellence nomination for sound design.

Also in the running for best European film 2009 are Stephen Daldry's Oscar winner "The Reader," Scottish director Andrea Arnold's kitchen sink drama "Fish Tank" and Tomas Alfredson's Swedish vampire film "Let the Right One In."

Pedro Almodovar's "Broken Embraces" was shut out of the best film lineup,...

BBC Films behind a third of BIFA noms
London -- BBC Films, the pubcaster's standalone filmmaking unit, could lay claim to backing, developing or co-producing titles that Monday laid claim to 26 -- or more than a third -- of the nominations for the upcoming British Independent Film Awards.

The broadcaster's filmmaking unit was involved in a slew of titles mentioned in dispatches including Andrea Arnold's "Fish Tank," "An Education," directed by Lone Sherfig, Armando Iannucci's "In The Loop" and Jane Campion's "Bright Star."

Also from the BBC Films roster came Tom Hooper's "The Damned United" and Scott Hicks' "The Boys Are Back".

Given the harsh economic times and a perceived lack of co-production opportunities for indie filmmakers, the involvement of broadcasters in movie development and production here in the U.K. is more apparent than ever.

With both the BBC and Channel 4 practically the only broadcasters in town backing big screen ambitions with...

tMF Featured Trailer: Andrea Arnold's Fish Tank
Regarded as one of the most innovative British filmmakers today - Andrea Arnold got that distinction via the film, Red Road - which also happens to be her first feature film. At the recent Cannes, her second feature was received with criticial praise, Fish Tank. The Times Online was very generous about her new film and I quote:

- - -

- - - It's only her second feature film, but with Fish Tank, the British director Andrea Arnold demonstrates that she more than deserves her place in a Cannes competition lineup that includes work from some of the most celebrated directors currently working. And it's fitting that her picture screens alongside the latest from Ken Loach - there is an obvious debt here to his brand of compassionate naturalism. Arnold builds on the humanistic, low key intimacy of her feature debut, Red Road, which won the Jury prize at...
