Exclusive: The new iteration of The CW is starting to take shape.
Two and a half months after Nexstar Media Group acquired a majority stake in the broadcaster, the new owners are starting to make moves that will determine its programming mix and who will be leading this charge.
Chief among these include the search for a top programming executive, a re-tooling of its scripted lineup and a drive to greenlight more unscripted formats.
This comes after a major round of layoffs at the company as well as the departure of long-term execs such as streaming and branding chief Rick Haskins, ad chief Mitch Nedick and comms chief Paul Hewitt.
Earlier this month, Dennis Miller was named President of The CW Network, replacing Chairman and CEO Mark Pedowitz. Deadline understands that he has been leading a search for a programming boss with executives such as former Pop TV boss Brad Schwartz...

Warner Bros. Television Group has eliminated 125 jobs, IndieWire has learned. That tally includes 82 employees laid off across the scripted, unscripted, and animation divisions as well as 43 open positions that will go unfilled.
The 125 jobs represent a loss of 26 percent of the current and vacant positions at the company. The layoffs alone comprise 19 percent of the current Wbtv workforce.
Parent corporation Warner Bros. Discovery has been cutting costs in all sorts of ways, including previous rounds of layoffs and the scrubbing of completed films and television series. The most notable example of the content write offs came when David Zaslav chose to wholly delete “Batgirl” ahead of its release. Zaslav and his consigliere CFO Gunnar Wiedenfels have tasked themselves with finding 3 billion in cost savings.

Channing Dungey’s Warner Bros. Television Group has been the hardest hit during Tuesday’s expected round of layoffs as part of Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav’s efforts to find 3 billion in post-merger cost savings.
Sources say Dungey’s division — which includes scripted, unscripted and animation — has reduced its workforce by 26 percent. Included in the tally are 82 employees (19 percent) who were laid off Tuesday as well as 43 vacant positions (7 percent). All told, 125 positions have been eliminated across business affairs, production and all forms of creative at the studio. Sources note that while some longtime employees were impacted Tuesday, most of the positions eliminated were considered to be low- to mid-level staffers.
Layoffs at other divisions were also expected Tuesday, though sources stress that Dungey’s studio was the most severely impacted. Additional rounds of layoffs impacting other divisions at Wbd are...

Warner Bros. Television Group handed out pink slips to 82 staffers on Tuesday, representing 19 of the studio’s workforce, across its scripted, unscripted and animation divisions. Additionally, it has opted not to fill 43 additional vacant positions — making for a total elimination of 125 jobs (or 26 of an approximately 481 headcount).
Warner Bros. TV Group declined comment, but it’s understood that chairman Channing Dungey detailed to staff a series of changes that included various levels of consolidation in unscripted and animation. Also, as reported Tuesday afternoon, the company has closed Stage 13, a shingle focused on diverse shortform programming (leading to the exit of Stage 13 head Diana Mogollón), and will end the Warner Bros. Television Workshop, which had existed for decades as a training ground for new creative talent in both writing and directing.

Another wave of Warner Bros Discovery post-merger layoffs is coming.
We hear multiple divisions of the merged company will be impacted, with Warner Bros. Television Group considered a main target. The staff reductions are expected this week, as soon as (and likely) Tuesday. Speculation about the imminent downsizing started spreading like wildfire Monday morning. Reps for Wbd and Wbtvg declined comment.
The number of layoffs is unclear but appears to be substantial. The HBO/HBO Max programming operation in August laid off 14 of staff — about 70 people — the vast majority of them on the Max side, with the areas of Max Non-Fiction Originals, International, Acquisitions, Casting and Live-Action Family Originals as the most heavily impacted.
Like with HBO/HBO Max, the Wbtvg cuts are expected to be accompanied by structural changes spearheaded by Chairman Channing Dungey.

This past year, “The Bachelor” endured a heavy dose of controversy, the type of drama that even reality TV producers can’t make up — and certainly don’t want to deal with. And yet, the franchise has done what no other dating series has done, crossing its 20-year mark on the air.
With 26 seasons of the flagship, 19 seasons of “The Bachelorette,” eight seasons of “Bachelor in Paradise” and numerous spinoffs to date, ABC’s dating franchise isn’t going anywhere. With an international fanbase that considers “The Bachelor” to be a way of life more than a TV show, it’s entirely possible that viewers will still be watching in 20 more years.
Copycats have tried to mirror the formula. Most have failed. Turns out, the simple fairytale of limos, roses, extravagant jet-setting, tears and heartbreak isn’t so easy to replicate, as no new network hits have broken through in recent memory.

Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard are teaming up on-screen again, this time for a new one-hour game show entitled “Family Game Fight” for NBC.
The broadcast network has ordered 10 episodes of the new series that will feature Bell and Shepard as both hosts and competitors. Each episode will see Bell and Shepard be “adopted” into individual families of four to compete in a series of games with a big cash prize up for grabs. NBC has not yet announced the specific amount of that cash prize.

The Wheel, the British game show hosted by comedian Michael McIntyre, is heading to the U.S. NBC has ordered a 10-part series based on the BBC format, the latest UK entertainment format adapted by the U.S. network following its reboot of Weakest Link with Jane Lynch.
The series, which launched in the UK last year and is produced by Hungry McBear Media, sees celebrities attempt to help contestants win money via a spinning wheel.
In each show, seven celebrities are strapped to the circumference of the giant wheel. Each celebrity has brought one area of expertise to the show – and it is on these areas that the contestants must answer questions. The contestants themselves are underneath The Wheel, on another smaller wheel. This contestant wheel is spun, and whichever contestant is randomly selected, rises up on their chair, to take their place at the center of The Wheel and begin the game.

NBC has given a 10-episode order to a U.S. adaptation of “The Wheel,” based on the new U.K. game show that has scored top ratings for the BBC.
Since premiering in November, “The Wheel” has become the BBC’s top-rated game show launch in a decade. The creatives behind the British format, production shingle Hungry McBear and Michael McIntyre (who hosts the U.K. version), will also produce the U.S. edition for NBC, along with Warner Bros. Unscripted Television’s Warner Horizon.
“It’s incredibly rare in this day and age for a new show to become an unqualified smash hit overnight … let alone in the biggest territory in Europe,” said Mike Darnell, President of Warner Bros. Unscripted Television. “We are thrilled to be in business with Hungry McBear and our amazing partners at NBC, who immediately saw ‘The Wheel’s’ potential and picked it up within 24 hours of the pitch.

In 2011, Zac Clark went missing.
The New Jersey native, known for his recent appearance on “The Bachelorette,” left home without saying a word, prompting his family to begin a search. He finally turned up at a bank, trying to cash a forged check stolen from his father. He was desperate for money to get high.
Years before, after suffering a brain tumor, Clark had become addicted to pain pills and was abusing alcohol. When he tried to cash the check, the bank teller knew something was wrong. But instead of calling the police, she called Clark’s father, who rushed to the bank before his son could disappear back onto the streets. Two days later, after hitting what Clark describes as rock bottom, he was in treatment.

After 18 years and 25 seasons, “The Bachelor” finally has its first Black star. The all-too-late, but historic, casting marks years of promises from producers of the juggernaut ABC reality TV series for greater diversity — and widespread disappointment from both critics and fans up to now.
This week, Matt James, a 28-year-old real estate broker, started calling the shots on the “The Bachelor” by doling out roses at a quarantined luxury resort packed with female suitors — and for the first time, the cast members of color outnumber the white contestants.
“I don’t want to piss off Black people. I don’t want to piss off white people. Because I’m both of those,” James told host Chris Harrison in the season premiere that aired this past Monday. The episode featured James mingling with his female suitors, having significant date conversations about diverse love stories — a stark contrast to the surface-level small talk of past seasons.

The world of Film Twitter is expanding. One Perfect Shot, the popular Twitter account that doles out cinematic beauty one still at a time, is becoming a TV series at HBO Max. Executive produced by Ava DuVernay along with Lee Metzger and Neil Miller––whose site Film School Rejects acquired One Perfect Shot back in 2016––one may wonder how precisely their feed of stills will translate to a TV series format. Well, the answer is a bit more interesting than your standard documentary approach––and will focus on an entire scene rather than a single image.
Each episode arms one acclaimed director with an arsenal of visual tools to pull back the curtain on their most iconic shots. Using state of the art technology, the directors will literally enter each shot, walking through the scene in 360 moments that allow viewers to join an immersive exploration of moviemaking. Quentin Tarantino tried to steal the swinging sixties aura Tinseltown back from the murderous late sixties spree which ground the decade of love and peace to a close. But a new exposé takes an almost forensic look at the Tate–Labianca murders. A comprehensive Manson Family docuseries Helter Skelter, is coming to Epix. 50 years after the Tate-labianco murders and three years on from his death, Charles Manson is having a moment in the spotlight. Last year saw Quentin Tarantino’s excellent Once Upon a Time in Hollywood explore the crimes, with the somewhat less excellent recent movies The Haunting of Sharon Tate and Charlie Says covering the same territory. Now, Epix is getting in on the action with a six-part docuseries titled Helter Skelter.
Named after The Beatles song that the Manson killers daubed in blood on a wall, the series bills itself as a comprehensive look at the origins of Manson’s hippie cult, its key members, their philosophies and the crimes with which they terrorized Hollywood in the late 1960s. It comes courtesy of An Inconvenient Truth producer Lesley Chilcott, Berlanti Productions, Rogue Atlas Productions and Warner Horizon Unscripted Television.

Productions, Warner Horizon Unscripted Television and Apploff Entertainment-produced show will return after Fox examined its ratings in the context of how similar shows performed last year.
“When the show launched, we looked at the ratings and they were Ok; it didn’t overperform, but we were proud of what we did,” Wade told Deadline at TCA last year. “As summer came and we saw how shows performed on all networks, it was obvious that actually, the [Mental Samurai] ratings were pretty solid.”

The fate of The World’s Best, CBS’ high-profile entertainment format hosted by James Corden, remains up in the air but if it did get picked up the broadcaster would “tweak the format”.
The global talent competition, which featured RuPaul Charles, Drew Barrymore and Faith Hill as judges, launched after the Super Bowl but struggled to keep hold of much of this audience over its subsequent 11 episodes.
Kelly Kahl, President, CBS Entertainment, speaking at summer TCA press tour, said that it had not made a decision whether to renew the show, which hails from reality TV heavyweights Mark Burnett and Mike Darnell.
“We really enjoyed the show creatively, we thought it was really well done, we thought James was amazing in it, the acts were fantastic and James got an Emmy nomination for it,” he said.
However, he added if it was to return, it would be a slightly different show.

Calling any show “The World’s Best” is a bold move. Calling a reality competition show “The World’s Best” is a veritable gauntlet throw, challenging countless bombastic rivals.
But CBS’ new series, which debuted Sunday night after Super Bowl Liii, had some solid reasons to feel confident going into the first episode. It’s the brainchild of Mike Darnell, formerly Fox’s in-house reality chief behind such franchises as “American Idol,” “So You Think You Can Dance,” and “The X Factor.” It premiered at a time when a reality show like Fox’s “The Masked Singer,” an aggressively bizarre competition show that almost immediately became a ratings hit, can thrive.
Also, it’s a feel-good program that premiered, as previously mentioned, after the Super Bowl, hosted by the perpetually enthusiastic James Cordon. It highlights talent from around the world, which is an admirable mission statement in and of itself.

Mike Darnell hopes that there’s no repeat of Super Bowl Li when the New England Patriots came back to beat the Atlanta Falcons in overtime as he prepares to launch The World’s Best.
The James Corden-fronted reality series has the post Super Bowl slot on CBS and Darnell admitted that he is nervous. “First of all, I’m going to be a wreck that night. I’ve never been that interested in football, I am this year. I know who’s in, I don’t want an overtime game, I didn’t want two La teams, I thought that was going to be a disaster, I don’t want a blowout, I’m out of my mind. If we get off on time, we should get a great number and it’s all about how much can you hold from that number,” he told Deadline.
