How Star Wars Stormtroopers Influenced One Of Apple's Biggest Products
Image
The stormtroopers of "Star Wars" are named for soldiers who fought for Imperial Germany during World War 1 — though the Galactic Empire they serve has a lot more in common with the German government of the Second World War.

Rather than the brown and green cloth uniforms the historical stormtroopers wore, those in "Star Wars" wear white polymer armor with face-concealing helmets. It's easier to make the costumes when you only need multiple copies of one design and in-universe, the uniformity reinforces the Empire as a military dictatorship.

The stormtroopers' look is one of the most well-remembered parts of "Star Wars" — it's up there with lightsabers, Darth Vader, and the Millennium Falcon. The prequel and sequel trilogies only touched up the designs for the stormtroopers and clone troopers, opting not to reinvent the wheel. It's not just the films where their influence reigns either; Jonathan "Jony" Ive, chief design officer at Apple,...

Star Wars' Captain Phasma Costume Started As A Rejected Kylo Ren Design
Image
Aside from the story, one thing that fans have always loved about "Star Wars" is the production design of the entire universe. Just think about the silhouette of Darth Vader's helmet and cape, Obi-Wan Kenobi's dusty, unassuming robes, the shape of the Star Destroyers, or even the look of C-3Po and R2-D2. There is a strong visual language in this franchise, and even when you have a show like "Andor," which strips a lot of the usual "Star Wars" tropes away, you see a Stormtrooper on screen for a second, and you know exactly where you are in the world of fiction.

After decades of Stormtroopers being instantly recognizable, we got a major upgrade in the form of Captain Phasma (Gwendoline Christie) in "The Force Awakens." The character utilized the already cool design of the Imperial troops, but in chromium, with a red-striped black cape slung to one side.

‘Flashdance’ Turns 40: Stars, Producer Reflect on Nixed Nudity, Mixed Reviews and Trendsetting Fashion
Image
The makers of Flashdance hoped for a hit, but no one had a feeling it would become a generation-defining sensation.

The Paramount film marked the first collaboration of producers Jerry Bruckheimer and Don Simpson, later known for blockbusters like Beverly Hills Cop and Top Gun. With a script co-written by Joe Eszterhas (Basic Instinct), Flashdance centered on Alex, a teenage welder in Pittsburgh who spends her nights performing at a cabaret bar but dreams of becoming a professional dancer.

Bruckheimer remembers the film’s team struggling to choose the lead, but that director Adrian Lyne was sold on newcomer Jennifer Beals. “The bosses at Paramount couldn’t make up their minds, so they brought all the secretaries in to view the screen tests, and they all picked Jennifer,” Bruckheimer tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Among the performers in the mix for the male lead of Nick, the steel mill owner who falls for employee Alex,...

The Mandalorian Season 3 Offers A Direct Connection To One Of The Last Jedi's Best Scenes
Image
This post contains spoilers for "The Mandalorian" Chapter 23 - "The Spies."

At the beginning of the newest episode of "The Mandalorian," Moff Gideon addresses the Imperial Shadow Council with a demand and a request. He demands they consider new leadership, and requests reinforcements. It's not so curious that he's asked for more squadrons of Tie Interceptors, especially since we watched Lady Bo-Katan Kryze and Din Djarin make short work of them in an episode earlier this season. But it is curious that he asks for bodyguards in the form of Praetorian Guards. We've heard that name before, but never this early in the timeline -- and it doesn't bode well for our Mandalorian heroes.

Rian Johnson And The Praetorian Guard

The Praetorian Guard originated in Rian Johnson's masterpiece of a Star Wars movie, "The Last Jedi," and he designed them to be lethal. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Johnson...

Celebrating their 25th iteration, the Costume Designers Guild Awards named eight winners in competitive categories tonight in a ceremony at the Fairmont Century Plaza hosted by Tituss Burgess.

For film, Shirley Kurata (Everything Everywhere All at Once), Jenny Eagan (Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery) and Catherine Martin (Elvis) all won awards; both Kurata and Martin are also nominated for Oscars for costume design this year.

Nicolas Cage Brought A Bit Of His Own Magic To The Sorcerer's Apprentice
Image
If you told me that there was a famous actor who was secretly an all-powerful wizard, Nicolas Cage would be my first and only guess as to who you were referring to. This made him the perfect star for 2010's "The Sorcerer's Apprentice." In the film, Nicolas Cage is a wizard living in modern-day Manhattan who takes a reluctant physics student, played by Jay Baruchel, under his wing as his apprentice. The title of the film gets most of that across.

As he always does, Cage brought his signature manic movement and energy to the character. Co-star Jay Baruchel remarked in an interview that Cage "has such a unique, distinct presence."

As often happens when you bring such a passionate star into a film, many of Cage's suggestions as to how the character would look and operate made it to the final cut of the film.

Motion Picture Academy Board Of Governors Nominees List Includes Brett Ratner, Ava DuVernay, Michael Shamberg
Image
The list of candidates for the 2020 Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors election is now out, with the winner in each branch being chosen directly from these entries rather than whittling it down to four finalists in each, as has been done previously. The list of candidates is made up of qualified AMPAS members who actually submit themselves.

Also new this year in the streamlined timetable, as Deadline exclusively reported May 16. The winners for the 17 open slots on the 54-member board will be chosen by preferential balloting, just like Best Picture race at the Oscars. Voting begins Monday and ballots are due back June 5.

The actors branch is the largest in the Academy and it also has drawn the biggest field of contenders for the one spot that is up. Incumbent governor Whoopi Goldberg is running for re-election against past governor Ed Begley Jr. vying to return to the board.

Whoopi Goldberg Faces Challenge From Richard Dreyfuss, Rita Wilson in Oscars’ Board of Governors Election
Whoopi Goldberg
Whoopi Goldberg will be facing 18 other actors who want her seat on the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors, the Academy revealed to its members on Friday.

The Academy posted the list of candidates for the board from all 17 of its branches, with incumbent Actors Branch governor Goldberg going up against a slate of challengers that includes past governor Ed Begley Jr., as well as Richard Dreyfuss, James and Stacy Keach, Tim Matheson, Joe Pantoliano, Lou Diamond Phillips and Rita Wilson, whose husband, Tom Hanks, served on the board for many years.

Other branches whose contenders hit double digits included Cinematographers (12), Directors (13), Executives (12), Producers (16), Sound (10) and Visual Effects (10).

But the Makeup Artists and Hairstylists Branch, in which incumbent Kathryn Blondell was ineligible to run again, has only a single candidate, Linda Flowers.

The recent culmination of the Star Wars Skywalker saga might have left fans with mixed feelings regarding the direction that new filmmaker choose to take George Lucas's original creation in, but there is no doubt that newer characters from the franchise have become a significant part of modern pop culture. One such character is the Jedi/Sith hybrid, Ben Solo aka Kylo Ren. A recent picture on Instagram by John Wilson Film Stills documents the first moments when actor Adam Driver tried on his character's costume:

Knives Out, Jojo Rabbit and Maleficent: Mistress of Evil strode away with the film prizes at the 22nd annual Costume Designers Guild Awards, which were handed out tonight at the Beverly Hilton.

It was ladies’ night at the CDGAs as seven of the eight winners were female. Mayes C. It was the third Cdga win for Eagan in five nominations, the first in four noms for Rubeo and the third in seven for Mirojnick, who also picked up the Costumers’ Career Achievement Award in 2016.

Rise of Skywalker Jet Trooper Unveiled at D23
A big part of The Rise of Skywalker will be all the cool toys coming from Hasbro. And as has been the tradition with all previous Star Wars movies, this final sequel in the Skywalker saga will be introducing a few new Stormtroopers to the action figure line-up. Earlier this year, just before Comic-Con kicked off in San Diego, we got a look at the Sith Trooper, clad in bright red armor and said to service Supreme Leader Ren. Now we have our look at the second trooper being added to the mix. Meet the Jet trooper.

Get your first look at the brand new jet trooper from Star Wars: #TheRiseOfSkywalker revealed at #D23Expo: https://t.co/Vx3JSfYsjvpic.twitter.com/EmMGz7kPSb

‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Production Company Developing ‘Baccarat Queen’ Gambling Movie
Ivanhoe Pictures, which produced “Crazy Rich Asians,” has partnered with Jeffrey Sharp and Sharp Independent Pictures to finance and co-produce “The Baccarat Queen” about Chinese gambler Cheung Yin “Kelly” Sun.

The project is inspired by Michael Kaplan’s article “The Baccarat Machine,” published in Cigar Aficionado, about Sun amassing millions of dollars of winnings by teaming with “King of Poker” Phil Ivey and using a technique known as edge sorting — recognizing the use of playing cards in which the edges on either side are unevenly cut by fractions of an inch.

Ivanhoe plans to develop a predominately English-language film featuring Asian characters. Ivanhoe and Sharp will produce.

“‘The Baccarat Queen’ is a truly captivating story that will feature a diverse international cast, a goal that Ivanhoe continues to pursue as global storytellers,” Ivanhoe Pictures president John Penotti said. “We are thrilled to partner with Sharp as we tell this exciting,...

Based on Michael Kaplan’s Cigar Aficionado article, The Baccarat Machine (which is also Sun’s nickname), the predominately English-language film will feature Asian characters for the global market.

The film will tell the true story of Sun, a young Chinese woman who turns a painstakingly developed talent and obsession for payback into one of the most ingenious legal gambling runs ever documented. Over the course of less than a year playing baccarat in major casinos around the world, Sun amasses winnings in the 10s of millions of dollars. ‘The Alienist’ interviews: Daniel Bruhl, Luke Evans, Dakota Fanning and more exclusive chats [Watch]
TNT is hoping to make a big mark on the Emmys with their limited series “The Alienist.” Produced by Cary Joji Fukunaga (“True Detective”), the show focuses on a criminal psychologist (Daniel Brühl) who teams up with a newspaper illustrator (Luke Evans) and a headstrong NYPD secretary (Dakota Fanning) to investigate a serial killer in 19th century New York City. Gold Derby recently spoke with Brühl, Evans, and Fanning, director Jakob Verbruggen, cinematographer P.J. Dillon, production designer Mara LePere-Schloop, and costume designer Michael Kaplan about their work. Scroll down and click on their names below to be taken to their full interviews.

To prepare for his role, Brühl read the works of psychology pioneers like Sigmund Freud, finding a lot of similarities between his character, Dr. Kreizler, and that famous Viennese founder of psychoanalysis. But “the handiest thing is that I’m married to an alienist,” he reveals. “My wife is a psychologist,...

‘The Alienist’: Dakota Fanning and Jakob Verbruggen On Whether Season 2 Will Happen — Turn It On Podcast
Dakota Fanning at an event for Observados (2024)
Dakota Fanning has done a lot of interviews in recent months about her TNT drama “The Alienist,” and one theme keeps popping up: How sadly relevant the show’s treatment of women, immigrants and the poor in the 1890s feels to 2018.

“That comes up a lot when I discuss the series,” she told IndieWire’s Turn It On podcast. “On the one hand, you want your series to be relevant and to speak to people and create conversation, and be modern. But some of the reasons this series is relevant and modern are actually why you wish that weren’t true… There are parallels, that’s a fact.”

In “The Alienist,” Fanning plays Sara Howard, an ambitious secretary determined to become the city’s first female police detective. That puts her in many ways at odds with the times, as women were not accepted in the workplace.

“People my age think 1896, that was forever ago,...

Michael Kaplan (‘The Alienist’ costume designer) waited 24 years to work on this ‘designer’s dream’ [Exclusive Video Interview]
Michael Kaplan
Costume designer Michael Kaplan‘s interest in “The Alienist” stretches back to when Caleb Carr‘s original novel was first published in 1994. “I just loved so many elements of it,” he recalls. “It seemed like a designer’s dream to be able to illuminate everything that was going on in 1896.” Produced by Cary Joji Fukunaga (“True Detective”), this TNT limited series focuses on a newspaper illustrator (Luke Evans) who teams up with a criminal psychologist (Daniel Brühl) and a headstrong NYPD secretary (Dakota Fanning) to investigate a serial killer in 19th century New York City. Kaplan kept a close watch on the project’s development for 24 years before finally landing the job. Watch our exclusive video interview with Kaplan above.

‘The Alienist’ Costume Designer Michael Kaplan on Transitioning from ‘Star Wars’ to Period Drama
Michael Kaplan
For Michael Kaplan, the chance to step away from costume designing “Star Wars” and work on his first period piece was a long time coming.

In fact, he’d been eyeing Caleb Carr’s “The Alienist” ever since the crime drama was published in 1994 and unsuccessfully developed as a feature by Curtis Hanson. So when Kaplan finally landed the 10-part TNT series set in 1896 New York (with the help of producer friend and J.J. Abrams collaborator Bryan Burke), it was both a welcome and fortuitous fit.

“Conveying class differences was a big part of my attraction to the project,” Kaplan said. “There are so many different strata in 1896 New York society. But it was like doing 10 movies at once. We were doing dozens of fittings a day, every day, like five days a week, sometimes seven. It was crazy. But I wanted to take the time and the care with each performer.

The Roundup Begins, As More Than 180 Vie For 17 Film Academy Board Seats
At this point, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ governors election looks more like a round-up than a race; more than 180 members have declared their interest in filling 17 contested spots on the 54-member Board of Governors.

Voting in the run-off round starts on Monday and ends May 18. That will narrow the present field to a maximum of four nominees per branch in the final round, which follows.

For now, there are on average about 11 candidates in the running for each slot. In the casting directors and costume design branches, only three members have declared for each slot. But not so in the actors branch, where 17 members — including Brie Larson, Jacki Weaver and Meg Ryan — are vying for the spot being vacated by termed-out Tom Hanks; or the producers, executives, and public relations branches, all of which have a bumper crop of candidates. Marvin Levy, currently a governor in the public relations branch,...

The Alienist: Costume Featurette Provides Glimpse into Gilded Style
Netflix have released a short featurette about costume design for The Alienist, giving an overall glimpse at the work of Michael Kaplan and his team in putting together the era of 1896, New York. What is enticing about The Alienist, apart from the fact that it’s brilliant whodunit telly, is that it is set outside of England, which is so often the preserve of dramas such as these. This is NY style at a point in history when those with money were about to get a whole lot more. Expensive, in other words, and if you had deep enough pockets your taste in fashion would echo this.

Check out the video below:

The Alienist takes place during the Gilded Age in the U.S. that covered around thirty years toward the end of the 1800s. It was a time of significant socio-economic growth, as reflected in clothing for both men and women.

Costume Designers Guild Nominees Snubs and Surprises: ‘Phantom Thread’ Emerges as Frontrunner, ‘Darkest Hour’ Is Shut Out
Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Mark Strong, Channing Tatum, and Taron Egerton in Kingsman: El Círculo Dorado (2017)
The Costume Designers Guild nominees for the 20th annual Cdg Awards in film, TV, and shortform costume design have landed. Three costume categories separate contemporary, period, and fantasy/sci-fi, so there’s room for more contemporary titles such as “I, Tonya” and “Kingsman: The Golden Circle” which are less likely to make it to the big Oscar show. Period films like “Phantom Thread” and “The Shape of Water” and big-scale fantasies like “Thor: Ragnarok” tend to make the Oscar grade. Given the number of slots, among the notable snubs are period films “Darkest Hour” (which boasts more showy costumes than nominated “Dunkirk”), “The Post,” “The Beguiled,” “Victoria & Abdul,” and “Mudbound.”

On the television side, a number of popular picks emerged with nods, including “Game of Thrones,” “Black Mirror,” “The Crown,” and “Stranger Things.” Like the film nods, each category is divided by contemporary, period, and fantasy/sci-fi designations.
