Ted Kotcheff, the versatile, two-time Palme d’Or nominee who directed more than two dozen movies including First Blood, Weekend at Bernie’s, Fun with Dick and Jane, North Dallas Forty and Wake in Fright and exec produced hundreds of episodes of Law & Order: Svu during a six-decade career, died Thursday. He was 94.

Family members confirmed the news to Canada’s The Globe and Mail.

Ted Kotcheff, Director of ‘First Blood’ and ‘Weekend at Bernie’s,’ Dies at 94
Image
Ted Kotcheff, the unheralded Canadian moviemaker who moved gracefully among genres to direct such notable films as The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz, First Blood and Weekend at Bernie’s, has died. He was 94.

Kotcheff, who went on to spend 13 seasons as an executive producer on the gritty Dick Wolf series Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, died Thursday, The Globe and Mail newspaper reported.

The Apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz (1974), starring Richard Dreyfuss as a young hustler, is widely considered to be among the finest Canadian films ever made, and Kotcheff also directed a feature very high of the list of the best movies to come out of Australia — the harrowing thriller Wake in Fright (1971).

The Toronto native, who started his admired 60-year career directing for live television, also helmed the social satire Fun With Dick and Jane (1977), starring George Segal and Jane Fonda; the Nick Nolte-Mac Davis dark pro football drama...

Weekend at Bernie's Cast Reunites 35 Years Later and Address Potential Threequel
Image
One of the most memorable dark comedies of all time, Weekend at Bernie's, was released in theaters all the way back in 1989. 35 years later, the three stars of the movie reunited to reflect on their shared experience working on the film.

Per Fandom Spotlite, the stars of Weekend at Bernie's were featured in a panel at Nickel City Comic Con in October. In the cult classic, Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman played two friends pretending their dead boss, Bernie, played by Terry Kiser, is still alive. All three actors shared some memories they have from the production while fielding questions from fans in attendance. At one point, they discussed how Kiser had suffered some painful real-life injuries from playing dead in the film.

Stream Review
Image
Plot: The Keenan family checks into a quaint inn called The Pines, “the pearl of Pennsylvania,” only to find that there is no Wi-Fi, cell phone signals are blocked, the exits are locked, and four masked killers are stalking the halls.

Review: Directed by Terrifier cast member Michael Leavy, the slasher movie Stream has two major selling points going for it: Terrifier franchise director Damien Leone provided the bloody special effects, and the cast list reads like the Expendables or the Avengers of horror. The line-up includes Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator), Danielle Harris (Halloween 4), Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp), Dee Wallace (The Howling), Mark Holton (Leprechaun), Daniel Roebuck (Final Destination), Dave Sheridan (The Devil’s Rejects), Terry Alexander (Day of the Dead), David Howard Thornton (Terrifier), Tim Reid (Stephen King’s It), Charles Edwin Powell (Exorcist III), Tony Todd (the original Candyman himself), Bill Moseley (The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2), Terry Kiser (Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood...

Mutilator 2 (2024) review
Image
It’s fair to say that I didn’t know anyone that was clamoring for a sequel to The Mutilator, the 1984 slasher flick that holds a cult status largely for its enthusiastic commitment to gore rather than any narrative ingenuity.

Yet here we are, forty years on, with Mutilator 2, a film that leans heavily into the same blood-soaked ethos while adding a self-aware, meta layer that has become almost de rigueur for horror sequels these days. Directed once again by Buddy Cooper, who helmed the original, Mutilator 2 is a messy, gruesome love letter to the die-hard fans of the first film and the slasher genre as a whole. It’s a film that knows exactly what it is and makes no apologies for it.

The premise of Mutilator 2 is as much a nod to its predecessor as it is a vehicle for a new round of creative carnage.

‘Mutilator 2’ Revives the Slasher Tradition with a Bloody Twist
Image
Nearly four decades after the cult classic The Mutilator shocked audiences with its unflinching gore and inventive kills, director Buddy Cooper is back with a much anticipated sequel, Mutilator 2. The film will have its international premiere at Pigeon Shrine FrightFest 2024 on August 23rd, offering fans a bloody continuation of the original’s legacy.

Set against the backdrop of a remake of the 1984 original, Mutilator 2 follows the cast and crew as they gather for a celebratory wrap party, only to find themselves hunted by an unknown killer. As the body count rises, the survivors must unravel the mystery behind the murders, which eerily mirror the gruesome deaths of the first film. The sequel promises to deliver the same level of carnage that made the original a cult favorite, with the added twist of a meta-narrative that blurs the lines between fiction and reality.

Terry Kiser leads the ensemble cast as Jack Chatham,...

Night Court Season 3's Cast Exits Continue A 40-Year-Old Trend From The Original Show
Image
Night Court has already lost multiple main cast members after only two seasons, which mirrors the original Night Court's rotating cast. In the early days of Night Court, it was common for at least one series regular to leave after just one season. The original Night Court's nine-season run suggests the reboot can survive despite continuous character departures.

By losing another main cast member ahead of season 3, Night Court is repeating a trend from the original NBC sitcom of the same name. Created by Reinhold Weege, Night Court originally aired from 1984-1992 and followed Judge Harry Stone (Harry Anderson) and the rest of the night shift crew at Manhattan Criminal Court. In 2023, a revival was developed by Dan Rubin and Melissa Rauch about Harry Stone's daughter, Abby (Rauch), following in her late father's footsteps. John Larroquette, who played Ada Dan Fielding in the original series, returned as a public defender at Abby's court.

Why Weekend at Bernie's II Keeps Rising From the Dead
Image
It's easy to commend the best zombie movies of all time, but there's a lot to be said about others like Weekend at Bernie's II. Weekend at Bernie's II was a film nobody asked for, yet it magically reanimated the late Bernie Lomax for a sequel. Garnering infamy through popular media, this dated zom-com ironically has a lot more to say about modern media than most people expect.

Creating a cinematic horror classic like The Evil Dead or Shaun of the Dead comes with a distinct honor among zombie media but prompts what someone could say in defense of more underrated comedies from the '90s. People love a good zombie movie, drawn to the morbid horror, the feeling of dread, and the idea of seeing a loved one reduced to a silhouette of what they once were. Weekend at Bernies II delivers on all these, but not as most people would expect.

Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (1988) – The Best Scene
House II: The Second Story (1987)
After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood), House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year), the awesomeness of Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight, the leg smashing in the Stephen King adaptation Misery, and three separate moments from John Carpenter’s Big Trouble in Little China, JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek is continuing his The Best Scene video series with a look at a scene from an entry in my favorite horror franchise, Friday the 13th. The film Lance is talking about today is Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood (watch it Here), and the section he’s focusing on is the entire climactic sequence in which iconic slasher Jason Voorhees gets knocked around by the telekinetic abilities of heroine Tina. Mutilator 2: sequel to 1980s slasher is still seeking distribution
Eva Hamilton in Mutilator 2 (2023)
Mutilator 2, writer/director Buddy Cooper’s long-awaited follow-up to his 1984 slasher The Mutilator (pick up a copy Here), is ready to make its way out into the world. The movie even screened at Joe Bob Briggs’ latest drive-in Jamboree event back in October, and received an “audience favorite” award there. And yet it still hasn’t secured a distribution deal. Cooper confirmed this on Facebook, where he wrote, “We are still searching for distribution. It might help if a few fans asked their favorite streaming service or theater when they would be showing Mutilator 2. If enough people show an interest, I feel like a distributor would be willing to help get it out to everyone.“

The fact that Shudder hasn’t swooped in to release this as a Shudder Original is shocking, given that they’ve not only had The Mutilator on their streaming service, but even had...

Robert Klane, Weekend at Bernie's Writer, Dies at 81
Image
Screenwriter and filmmaker Robert Klane, best known for his work on the Weekend at Bernie's movies, has passed away.

Per Variety, it's been reported that Klane died in Woodland Hills, California, on Aug. 29 due to kidney failure. The writer's death was confirmed with a statement given to the publication from Klane's son, Jon, who noted, "Klane’s satirical and daring writing pushed the boundaries of good taste, while depicting the unfairness of life through themes of sex, family, madness and death.”

Rob Reiner, who starred in the Klane-written film Where's Poppa?, also spoke about the sad news. Reiner said of Klane, "Bob had a brilliant comedy mind that went deeper and deeper to get to the truth. Most people have a censor in their minds and know how far they can go. Bob didn’t have a censor. That’s what made him great and set him apart. He was fearless.

The Camp Appeal and Heartfelt Emotion of ‘Tammy and the T-Rex’ [Horror Queers Podcast]
Fred Dekker in RoboCop 3 (1993)
Puppet Arms

We bounced all over the place in May, starting with Fred Dekker’s genre mash-up Night of the Creeps before getting deadly serious with Gus Van Sant’s pseudo-Columbine film Elephant, trippy with Alex Garland’s surreal Annihilation. Now we’re back in ultra campy territory with the silly and heartfelt Tammy and the T-Rex (1994).

In writer/director Stewart Raffill‘s low-budget horror comedy, high schooler Tammy (Denise Richards) is in love with Michael (Paul Walker) but her jealous ex Billy (George Pilgrim) won’t let her go. After a near-deadly prank, Michael’s comatose body is stolen by mad scientists Dr. Wachenstein (Terry Kiser) and his assistant Helga (Ellen Dubin) who want to use the boy’s brain to pilot an animatronic dinosaur.

But true love can’t be denied! Tammy, Michael and her gay best friend, Byron (Theo Forsett) will stop at nothing to find a...

Every Classic Night Court Character That Can Still Return In The Revival
Image
There are several characters from the original Night Court who could return to appear in the revival series. The new Night Court proved popular with audiences and critics alike and earned a swift renewal for season 2. Despite this, the fact that John Larroquette was the only actor from the original Night Court to return for the reboot raised questions regarding whether other characters from the classic courtroom comedy might return for a cameo.

The question was posed to Night Court reboot executive producer Dan Rubin, who confirmed that there was no intentional snubbing of characters from the original series, like Marsha Warfield's Roz Russell. However, Rubin believed it was important the new Night Court first prove that it had more going for it than simple nostalgia, adding that the wonderful thing about the Night Court premise is "anyone can walk through those doors at any moment." This makes it...

One Weekend At Bernie's Scene Had Terry Kiser Gasping For Air
Image
Ted Kotcheff's 1989 comedy "Weekend at Bernie's" was considered outrageous at the time. Andrew McCarthy and Jonathan Silverman play a pair of low-level insurance wonks who, in the course of their daily work, find a mysterious "mistake" on the books. It seems that someone has been committing fraud. When they take it to their boss Bernie (Terry Kiser), he invites them to his beach house as thanks for figuring it out. Bernie is, of course, the perpetrator and intends to murder them. Before he can, however, Bernie is killed by a vengeful mob boss (Bernie was sleeping with the mob boss' sister). When the McCarthy and Silverman characters arrive, they find Bernie dead, surmise that foul play is afoot, and figure they have to protect themselves from any further mob violence ... by pretending Bernie is still alive.

The bulk of the movie involves McCarthy and Silverman hoisting around a dead body,...

Only One Scene In Weekend At Bernie's Wasn't A Real Body
Image
What if you died but could somehow manage to still entertain guests at your exclusive beach house party, mark up the price for your Porsche by 20 grand and sell it, and perform in the bedroom like you never have before ... all while evading a hitman? That's the 1989 dark comedy "Weekend at Bernie's" in a nutshell. Terry Kiser stars as the titular character, which means he plays a corpse for most of the film. And almost the entire film uses Kiser playing dead. However, his co-star Andrew McCarthy revealed that there is one scene in which a real body wasn't used. (Side note: we talked to Andrew McCarthy about his memoir and '80s nostalgia in 2022.)

In "Weekend at Bernie's," Larry (McCarthy) and Richard (Jonathan Silverman), two young professionals looking to climb the corporate ladder at their New York City insurance company, show their boss, Bernie Lomax, that someone within the company has committed insurance fraud.

Weekend At Bernie's Almost Seemed 'Too Funny' While It Was Being Filmed
Image
Ridiculously absurd. Cartoonish. Offensive, maybe? Those are just a few words to describe "Weekend at Bernie's," the 1989 dark comedy about two young professionals --Larry (Andrew McCarthy) and Richard (Jonathan Silverman) -- who drag their dead boss' corpse around an island to avoid being taken out by a hitman. Even some of the movie's cast members thought the idea was asinine. But it appears their attitudes changed when they started filming the movie, according to Andrew McCarthy's recollections (via The Hollywood Reporter):

"We thought it was funny s*** as we were doing it ... There's the old saying, 'If it's funny to you on set, it ain't going to be funny on screen,' but we found it really f****** funny. We loved Bernie, and we just wanted to do more s*** to him. So a lot of the s*** we just thought of on set. I love 'Bernie's.' I think it's great.

‘Emergency’ Trailer: Sundance Breakout Puts a New Twist on the College Party Comedy
Image
Two best friends, one drunk stranger, and a pretty messed up memorable night: It’s a total “Emergency.”

Director Carey William’s Sundance breakout premieres stars Donald Elise Watkins and Rj Cyler as college seniors looking to get down for Spring Break. But their “legendary tour” of the most elite parties takes an unexpected turn after the roommates discover a drunk, semi-conscious woman (Maddie Nichols) in their apartment. Even worse: Their roommate, played by Sebastian Chacon, has no idea when the girl appeared.

As the college students debate over calling the cops to report a drunk white woman nearly passed out at the home of two Black men with their Latino roommate, they decide to transport the girl somewhere safe themselves. Meanwhile, her sister (Sabrina Carpenter) is also trying to find them.

K.D. Dávila penned the script and also was behind director Williams’ 2018 short film of the same name.

“Emergency...

Terry Kiser: Why ‘Bernie’s’ Is Still Brilliant
Terry Kiser in Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman (1993)
There’s a real art to physical comedy, and there have been few movies that required more physical comedy out of its star than Weekend at Bernie’s. After the title character’s untimely demise, he (obviously) doesn’t have any lines to speak … yet Terry Kiser still managed to steal scenes with his ability to draw laughs […]

Weekend at Bernie's Cardboard Cutout Spotted at Kansas City Royals Mlb Game
Image
Cinema history's funniest corpse enjoyed watching some baseball this week, as a Weekend at Bernie's cutout was spotted in the crowd of the Royals/Cubs game at Kauffman Stadium. For this year's Mlb season, teams have been playing games with no fans in attendance in the interest of public safety. Because leaving the seats empty is perhaps a bit too boring, teams have been filling them with cardboard cutouts of people to help give the illusion that there are fans watching in the crowd. For the most part, the cutouts are of ordinary fans or baseball players, but the people at Kauffman Stadium chose to get a bit more creative.

As seen on television, a cutout of Bernie Lomax from Weekend at Bernie's was seen in the front row right behind home plate on Thursday evening's game between the Kansas City Royals and the Chicago Cubs. From his sunglasses and...

Trailer For The Uncut Version of the Crazy 1994 Film Tammy And The T-rex Featuring a Young Denise Richards and Paul Walker
I don’t know if you remember this or not, but after Jurassic Park came out and blew up at the box office, there was a surge of mostly bad dinosaur-themed movies that were released. One of these films was the ridiculously crazy 1994 cult classic Tammy and the T-Rex.

If you’ve never heard of this movie, or forgot about it, I’ve got a treat for you today! An uncut R-rated version of Tammy and the T-Rex is set to screen at Cinepocalypse in Chicago on June 17th and to promote the occasion a new trailer for the film has been cut and released.

The story for the film centers around a teen girl played by Denise Richards, who learns that a scientist (Terry Kiser) implanted her dead boyfriend's brain into a giant animatronic dinosaur. His name is Michael and after escaping the scientist’s lab, he goes back to school,...

New Trailer for Uncut Edition of 90s Cult Classic 'Tammy & The T-Rex'
"Everybody walk the dinosaur." Chicago's Music Box Theatre has debuted an official trailer for the special "Gore-Cut" version of the 90s cult classic direct-to-video comedy Tammy & The T-Rex. Made only a year after Jurassic Park broke records in 1993, this film arrived in late 1994 and earned a cult following. It stars Denise Richards as the high school girlfriend of a guy who is murdered and then his brain is implanted into a robotic T-Rex that looks super fake. Oh, it's wacky. "Playing like a '90s Disney Channel movie—until the decapitations and head crushings begin. So put on your best T-Rex costume and join us for an ultra-rare, and possibly first-of-its-kind, public screening of this original, uncut, R-rated, gore-filled 35mm print of Tammy." It also stars a young Paul Walker, plus Theo Forsett, Ellen Dubin, and Terry Kiser. This new "uncut" version of the camp sci-fi comedy is part of a 4K restoration,...

Drive-In Dust Offs: From A Whisper To A Scream (1987)
Ever since seeing Creepshow (1982) when it first arrived on video, I’ve been enamored with anthology films; reaching back to Amicus’ ‘60s and ‘70s treasures like Tales from the Crypt (1972) all the way up to Epic Pictures’ Tales of Halloween (2015), omnibuses scratch a very particular itch for this viewer. Falling somewhere in the middle of my terrorline is From a Whisper to a Scream (1987), a proud and nasty addition to the sub-genre. This bugger does not mess around.

Released by Moviestore Entertainment stateside and by Cineplex-Odeon up here in Canada the following year, From a Whisper to a Scream (Aka The Offspring, which is what I knew it as) made back its $ 1.1 million budget plus a few dollars more, and the film received mixed reviews from critics in its limited release. Scrappy and mean, with a delightful turn from Vincent Price in the wraparound, From a Whisper to a Scream...

Deadly Pleasures: Friday The 13th Part VII – The New Blood (1988)
I’ve waited a long time for this (cracks knuckles). This argument has been a long time coming, but I know that I’m ready (cracks neck). I’m ready to make a case for an overlooked, often derided film from the Friday the 13th series (tapes fists). That’s right, I’m here in defense of Friday the 13th Part VII – The New Blood. And you know what? I’m confident that I’m going to sway at least a few of you (does series of calisthenics so as not to pull a muscle).

Usually mocked as “Carrie vs. Jason,” many people dismiss this entry as a sloppy attempt by an FX guy trying his hand at directing. Most know that John Carl Buechler places the blame on the MPAA for cutting out all of his beloved gore, but they are often quick to point out that the movie...

From VHS to VOD #1
I don’t know if you’re anything like me, but I can often spend hours upon hours trawling through iTunes looking for new movies to buy… Usually I’ll randomly come across a title I haven’t seen in years and use the “Cast & Crew” links to make my way down the rabbit hole to the more obscure side of Apple’s digital movie service.

Now whilst many will decry that iTunes is a terrible VOD service due to Apple’s desire to lock its audience to their platforms, if you have an Apple TV or iPad be aware – there are some truly obscure films hidden away in the depths of the vast collection of movies. Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!

So, with...

If a 'Weekend at Bernie's' Remake Ever Happens, This Is Exactly How It Should Go Down
There has been a flurry of super-important, nostalgia-drenched movie anniversaries recently, including, but not limited to Tim Burton's "Batman" (25 years), "Gremlins" (30 years), "Ghostbusters" (30 years) and "The Karate Kid" (30 years). But one movie that seems to have been overlooked completely is "Weekend at Bernie's" (find out where to watch) which came out 25 years ago this week. The story of a couple of yuppies who try to pretend that their dead boss hasn't died at all, it was a surprise hit, pulling in double its production budget at the box office and spawning a goofy, guilty pleasure sequel. (It did get a Blu-ray release earlier this summer, so you can now watch all of the icky '80s tomfoolery in HD.)

Even though "Weekend at Bernie's" was far from a phenomenon (as evidenced by the deafening silence around its anniversary), you can bet one thing: it will be remade. Look no...

'Friday the 13th': We rank the movies to prep for the upcoming TV show
Kevin Bacon, Adrienne King, Ari Lehman, Robbi Morgan, Betsy Palmer, and Jeannine Taylor in Friday the 13th (1980)
Horny camp counselors around the world, beware! Jason Voorhees is coming to television. According to Deadline, Friday the 13th producer Sean S. Cunningham has inked a deal to develop an hour-long show based around everybody’s favorite hockey mask-clad machete wielder.

During his ’80s heyday, Voorhees was one of the most iconic characters in film, and his hulking, silent demeanor and signature goalie wear have kept him in the horror zeitgeist since his inception. Thanks to the increasingly odd nature of the sequels and the fact that Jason has been under the control of an eclectic cavalcade of writers, directors,...

Your 2013 Halloween Season TV Preview (abridged) with Schedules
Last year we ran a schedule of every TV/Cable network schedule we could find that could be construed as Horror or Halloween related for the month of October. Let’s just say it proved useful for our readers and even for our staff when they were looking to find something to watch, wanted to program their DVR’s or didn’t want to miss out on some great “live” Horror. Isn’t there something about having a movie fed to you on TV as opposed to watching it on Blu-ray or DVD or streaming? We may not like commercials, but the randomness that you can associate with a TV program itinerary is novel. It removes a little bit of control from the audience who is all to concerned with being in control these days (just look at the reasons behind publishing a piece like this).

So here’s the 2013 Halloween Seasonal TV Preview,...
