Studio Ghibli Needs to Stop Wasting Its Franchise Potential
Image
Studio Ghibli are considered the masters of anime movies. Over the years, they've released plenty of films that have become beloved by the anime community. However, most of these films follow an unfortunate trend that keeps them from being perfect in every way. These films need sequels or spin-offs to carry on their story. Otherwise, these films end up feeling like there's something missing.

Studio Ghibli is neglecting an important opportunity to turn fan-favorite films into franchises. Each movie the studio makes is another opportunity to enchant audiences by building on an already fantastic world, only for the directors and producers to move on to the next unrelated film when the last is done. While these films are fantastic on their own, turning them into a series is an opportunity best not missed. Studio Ghibli showing restraint with sequels is admirable, but it's prevented the studio from developing its serious franchise potential.

Kiki's Delivery Service's Saddest Moment Never Happened in the Book

The saddest moment in the hit Studio Ghibli film Kiki's Delivery Service actually never happened in its source material. Kiki's Delivery Service is arguably one of director Hayao Miyazaki's most popular films. While it may not top most fans' lists, the story centering on a young witch gaining independence and making a name for herself is a charming coming-of-age story. This is only heightened by the film's characters. Kiki is a lovable protagonist with her can-do attitude and dedication to her craft. Meanwhile, her cat Jiji won the hearts of many moviegoers because of how cute he is. The two are practically inseparable throughout the film...that is, until things go downhill for the young witch.

I too was quite surprised when I found out that this film was in production. I was even more surprised with the director that was making the film: Japanese master of horror Takashi Shimizu. So let’s get one thing straight right away (even though you probably already noticed): this is no horror film. If you are even only a little bit familiar with Japanese cinema, chances are that you know about Anime; Japanese animation that has taken the world by storm in the last few decades. If you know anything about Anime, you have probably heard of legendary director Hayao Miyazaki and his timeless masterpieces he created for Studio Ghibli. In 1989, Miyazaki released Majo no Takkyūbin, internationally known as Kiki’s Delivery Service.

The effects look better this time out, new characters are introduced and Jiji - Kiki's talkative black cat - gets a lot more screen time. It's still early days on this one but we thought it was worth mentioning because the animated version of Kiki's Delivery Service is such a popular movie around the world. For those that aren't familiar with it, Kiki's Delivery Service is a live action take on Studio Ghibli's 1989 animated feature, directed by Japan's very own Uncle Walt, Hayao Miyazaki. A young girl named Kiki (Fuka Koshiba) must leave her home for a year to begin training in witchcraft. She leaves on her broom, but first says goodbye to her friends and family.

First trailer for live action Kiki's Delivery Service
News Simon Brew 28 Oct 2013 - 06:26

Heading to Japanese cinemas in March is the live action take on Kiki's Delivery Service. Here's the trailer...

One of the many cherishable classics from the Studio Ghibli stable is the wonderful Kiki's Delivery Service. But as we reported a while back, an entirely separate live action take on the material is in the works in Japan.

It's gone back to the source novel, penned by Eiko Kadono. Her book was first published back in 1985, and she's gone on to pen four sequels to date. That said, this new film is apparently based around the first book, although don't hold us to that.

What we do have for you, courtesy of Anime News Network (via Bleeding Cool), is the first trailer for the live action Kiki's Delivery Service. There's also the news that the film itself is set for release in Japan on March 1st 2014. Here's the teaser trailer.

Blu-ray Review: 'Kiki's Delivery Service' (rerelease)
★★★★★ The trials and tribulations of teen witches and wizards have become worldwide phenomenon. Unlike Mildred Hubble or Sabrina Spellman, however, the eponymous heroine of Kiki's Delivery Service (Majo no takkyûbin, 1989) is spared the hassle of concealing her powers. The opposite, in fact: 13-year-old Kiki is obliged to leave home for a year as part of her witch training to find a new town and hone her skills. Heading to a coastal city, Kiki founds a delivery service, turning her ability to fly a broomstick into a source of employment. Based on a novel by Eiko Kadono, this Ghibli heartwarmer is now available on Blu-ray.

Kiki's Delivery Service doesn't have the spiritual weirdness of Hayao Miyazaki's later masterpieces Princess Mononoke (1997) or Spirited Away (2001), nor the sweeping scale which characterised both his earlier and later work. In place of an epic adventure, Kiki's is a more episodic, character-driven piece that succeeds...

Watch Studio Ghibli Director Higuchi Shinji’s Live-Action Short Giant God Warrior Appears In Tokyo; New Images from Miyazaki’s The Wind Rises
Studio Ghibli was briefly in the news earlier this week with word that Shimizu Takashi (The Grudge, Ju-on) would be directing a live-action adaptation of Eiko Kadono’s children’s fantasy novel Kiki’s Delivery Service. Today, we've got a double-shot of Ghibli: a live-action short film titled Giant God Warrior Appears in Tokyo (Kyoshinhei Tokyo ni Arawaru) from director Higuchi Shinji (Neon Genesis Evangelion) and new images from Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises. The first one needs little explanation beyond the title, but it's fun to see Studio Ghibli getting in on some live-action throwbacks to the days of Godzilla and Ultraman. As for Miyazaki, The Wind Rises is based on his most recent comic and centers on Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed the Zero Fighter used by Japanese pilots in World War II. Hit the jump to watch the short and to check out some images from Miyazaki's new project.

Shimizu Takashi Confirmed to Direct Live-Action Kiki’S Delivery Service

The publications announced today that Takashi is indeed taking the reigns of the project and a live action version of Kiki’s Delivery Service is in the works. Sixteen-year-old Japanese figure skater Fuka Koshiba is reportedly set for the starring role of Kiki. The novel follows a young witch, who must use her flying abilities to make a living, while she spends a year on her own in a town without any other witches. Hit the jump for more. Kiki’S Delivery Service 2-Disc Special Edition DVD Review
Deceptively simple and sweet, Hayao Miyazaki’s Kiki’s Delivery Service has still managed to linger in the hearts of movie lovers, and now it’s finally gotten the proper DVD treatment it deserves from Disney and Studio Ghibli.

Kiki, voiced by a young Kirsten Dunst in this Western version of the story, is a 13-year-old witch who - as is the custom - is sent to live away from her parents for a year to figure out what her talent is. Kiki eventually settles on Koriko, which resembles a seaside European village in the 1950s, and sets up her titular delivery service.

Hit the jump to find out why I still think the first Ghibli/Disney collaboration is the best one, and what kind of extras make this special edition worth buying.

One of the things that makes viewers of all ages become instantly engaged with Kiki’s story...

DVD Review – Studio Ghibli Collection
Castle In The Sky

Hayao Miyazaki’s art has possibly never been on better display than it was with Castle in the Sky. The backgrounds are lush, colorful, and have an atmosphere to them that’s really unmatched in other animated pictures. The film is also a divine showcase of Miyazaki’s imagination when you take a look at the flying and flying machines the man invigorates the film with. This is a society you want to visit and possibly even live in, which is absolutely breathtaking. While this might be the least complex of Miyazaki’s works, it’s arguably his most gorgeous to look at. Watch this one subtitled as the English dub leaves much to be desired.

Kiki’S Delivery Service

Based on a 1985’s children’s novel by Eiko Kadono, Kiki’s Delivery Service operates on it’s own terms when it comes to pacing. Slow-moving isn’t the right word,...
