Storied docs producer Dawn Porter has said private funding in the documentary space could help plug financial gaps that have opened up in today’s challenging market.
The Gotham Award-winner’s latest project, revealed by Deadline in February, is a documentary about Nelson and Willie Mandela that is part-funded by the Schultz Family Foundation.
Speaking at MIPTV today, Porter said her team at Trilogy Films is “reaching out for private funding” to finance big projects.
“We will need a broadcaster but are also reaching out [externally],” she added. “I’m looking at how we make films, how budget constraints are changing [the industry] and having honest conversations with partners about how we are going to do this together.”
Porter said she has spent time in recent months speaking with partners such as HBO, Netflix and CNN about “what is working for them and how their processes have changed” in the current climate. She...

Dawn Porter looks for stories of people who made history without asking. By following congressman and civil rights leader John Lewis in John Lewis: Good Trouble, or President Obama’s White House photographer Pete Souza in The Way I See It, she says she hopes to shade in between the lines of history.
In her most recent project, Hulu’s The Lady Bird Diaries, she fixates on Lady Bird Johnson’s life, relying largely on archival audio recordings that were released following the former first lady’s death in 2007. In...

“She sat down, stubbed out a cigarette, tossing her long hair and from then on I watched her expecting something — I didn’t know what. Apparently she did not eat, nor did she clap for any of the other speakers. She smoldered and smoked.”
That passage is First Lady Lady Bird Johnson’s description of Eartha Kitt at a White House luncheon — a meal that would come to define both women’s legacies — from her White House diaries, a meticulous account of Lyndon B. The thing that strikes you first is her voice.
Lady Bird Johnson recorded 123 hours of audio tapes recounting the ins and outs of her husband Lyndon Johnson’s administration. The recordings form the spine of Dawn Porter’s illuminating new documentary, “The Lady Bird Diaries,” but they don’t just give a chronological sequence of events. These recordings are an artistic achievement in their own right, primary-source history executed with insight and wit, and as a kind of diaristic blank verse. It helps that Johnson had worked as a journalist; she has a way with words that’s deceptive because she’s not (overly) flowery, though her vocabulary is immense. Instead, she’s direct, spare in her descriptions, with her Texas drawl giving musicality to her prose. The space between the drama of her saying “I want to know what is going on, even if to know is to suffer...

I first visited the Grand Canyon in 1967 with two school friends and an elderly teacher who filled his summers by taking young students on long road trips, camping across the country. I mostly remember the color of the sky and the immensity of the chasm, with the Colorado River as seen from the canyon rim just a dirt thread lying across the bottom of the world. The nearest we got to the river was a mule ride down the Bright Angel Trail, three hours that left us sunburnt and swarming with ticks.

Showtime’s four-part docuseries on the Supreme Court, Deadlocked: How America Shaped the Supreme Court, will premiere its first episode on September 22, amid a period of intense concern over the impact and integrity of the high court.
From director Dawn Porter, the project delves into the modern era of the court, going back to the Earl Warren court of the 1950s and 1960s, when the justices established a series of landmark progressive precedents, to today, with the conservative majority upending abortion rights and affirmative action. With it has come increasing distrust of the court itself, as well as the internal intrigue given the unprecedented leak last year of the Dobbs abortion decision.
“I wanted to give people an understanding of how the court works,” Porter told Deadline. “…You don’t pay attention until something you love is gone, until a right you cherish has been overturned. So I felt like...

The 123 hours of audiotapes that Claudia “Lady Bird” Johnson recorded during her husband’s wholly unexpected tenure in the White House capture five of the most fraught and productive years of the American presidency from a front-row vantage point. Her observations, some held sealed until as late as 2017, were a core resource for Julia Sweig’s biography Lady Bird Johnson: Hiding in Plain Sight. Based on that book and Sweig’s subsequent podcast, Dawn Porter’s sympathetic and involving documentary furthers the argument that Lady Bird made the most of a vaguely defined role, embarking on advocacy projects that were ahead of their time while providing crucial support and counsel to Lbj.
A director who has explored the American political landscape in stand-alone docs (Gideon’s Army, John Lewis: Good Trouble) and series (Bobby Kennedy for President), Porter casts a fresh light on a well-trod period of recent history. Beyond the first lady’s recordings,...

Busy documentarian Dawn Porter will debut her latest project, “The Lady Bird Diaries,” March 10 at SXSW. The all-archival doc, which will bow on Hulu later this year, relies on 123 hours of personal and revealing audio diaries that Lady Bird recorded during her the presidency of her husband, Lyndon Baines Johnson. The tapes, which were not publicly released until 2017, reveal the critical role the former First Lady played in Lbj’s White House as a close advisor and trusted political partner.
Claudia Alta “Lady Bird” Johnson began her recording diary shortly after the assassination of John F. Kennedy in November 1963 and kept recording through her family’s departure from the White House in January 1969. Julia Sweig spent five years researching the diaries for her 2021 biography “Lady Bird Johnson: Hiding in Plain Sight,” which she turned into an eight-part podcast that formed the basis for Porter’s 90-minute docu, produced by Trilogy Films for ABC News Studios.

Late-night TV hosts were among those paying tribute to Queen Elizabeth II after she died at age 96 on Thursday.
British host James Corden was clearly emotional as he addressed viewers on “The Late Late Show”, sharing in a quiet studio: “I, like the rest of the world, am so sad tonight, but also so thankful and grateful to the queen for the most incredible service and leadership she has shown during all of our lifetimes.”
He added, “We viewed her as immortal, an essential part of the fabric of our world.”

The world is still grappling with the death of Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-ruling monarch in the history of the U.K. While Americans don’t quite have the same relationship with the British royal as their counterparts across the pond, late-night TV hosts still took a moment to address the news.
James Corden, a Brit himself, dedicated an entire segment to remembering the Queen, who died at age 96 at her home in Scotland on Thursday afternoon. The host took a more serious tone, discussing her with reverence.

Jimmy Kimmel kicked off Thursday’s episode of “Jimmy Kimmel Live” by talking, of course, about the biggest news of the day, the death of Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom at age 96.
And during his monologue, Kimmel wondered if her death might have happened now due to the messy drama surrounding the film “Don’t Worry Darling” and the whole “spitgate” thing involving two of the film’s co-stars, Chris Pine and Harry Styles. You can watch the whole thing above now, but we’ll break it down below.

At one point, there was hype for The New Mutants, the film that was being promoted as a horror entry in the X-Men franchise… but unfortunately, things didn’t end up going very well for that project. Now I'm not saying that the absence of "King of the Hill" is what got us in this mess, but since the show ended in 2010, America seems to have lost its collective mind. From Karens to Donalds and all the QAnon in between, what we need right now is for Hank Hill to shed a little light on the absurdity of our present day.
The satirical animated series, which ran from 1997 to 2010, examined a plethora of social issues through the perspective of small-town Texas rednecks. America's favorite propane and propane accessory salesman Hank Hill was at the center of it all, like a well-intentioned Archie Bunker.
Hank was a principled, old-school conservative doing his best to adjust to a changing society. The show's plots would place him in some of the most preposterous situations one could imagine. And he mostly handled it all with dignity. The dignity of, say, Lady Bird Johnson.

In honor of the sixtieth anniversary edition of the “The White House: A Historic Guide,” let’s revisit the landmark TV special hosted by Jacqueline Kennedy in 1962 that launched this perennial fundraiser for preserving the presidential home. Watch highlights of the program, which included a charming appearance by President John F. Kennedy, above.
With the support of her husband, Mrs. Kennedy had worked diligently throughout 1961, their first year in the Executive Mansion, to restore many of the state and private rooms with period pieces rather than reproductions. And she spearheaded the formation of the White House Historical Association, which raised funds for the ambitious project.
To showcase the results, Mrs. Kennedy gave CBS newsman Charles Collingwood a tour of these rooms, many of which remain this way today. Both the Tiffany net and NBC aired this hour-long program on Valentine’s Day, with ABC rebroadcasting it four days later.

The Motion Picture Association recently moved into a redesigned headquarters, just a couple blocks from the White House, and on Monday night the trade organization debuted the signature feature of their glassy new space: a 118-seat theater.
The occasion was a screening of Motherless Brooklyn, the new Edward Norton drama that opens on Nov. 1, but the studio hopes are that the venue will again become a focal point for D.C.’s social scene.
The theater replaces a smaller, 70-seat one that was part of a Brutalist-style structure opened in 1969.
Back then, with Jack Valenti at the helm, the theater became “one of the most exclusive invitations in Washington,” as The New York Times once described it. Lady Bird Johnson attended one of the first events, and President Gerald Ford, Vice Presidents Walter Mondale, George H.W. Bush and Dick Cheney, and Jordan’s King Abdullah were among those who attended screenings there.

As Robert Schenkkan’s The Great Society begins pulling you back back back to a cultural moment that rivals our own in meanness, division and barrel-scraping crumminess, Brian Cox would seem to have the toughest job on Broadway. Portraying the accidental president who succeeded the martyred one only to land waste deep in one big muddy after another, Cox must convince his audience that he can match, hog-tie and serve up like so much barbecue a personality as big as the Lone Star State itself.
I mean, just imagine having to follow Bryan Cranston.
If you’ve seen HBO’s robust Succession, you already know Cox seems up for just about any challenge tossed his way, including the role of Lyndon Baines Johnson in the second of Schenkkan’s two-part bio-drama. The first installment, All The Way, debuted on Broadway in 2014, winning Cranston a Tony Award for his uncanny performance...

Before Twitter free-for-alls, American presidents rarely found spaces in which to let loose — which is one reason why Camp David is so exceptional.
In his new book, Inside Camp David: The Private World of the Presidential Retreat, rear admiral and former camp commander Michael Giorgione reflects on the 75-year history of the retreat, and how former presidential families like the Obamas, Bushes, and Clintons used it to relax.
“To me, Camp David is more a psychological journey than a physical one,” Lady Bird Johnson once said of the camp (which is isolated on top of a mountain in Thurmont, Maryland), according to the book.

Actor John Carroll Lynch first caught the attention of moviegoers in 1996 when he played Frances McDormand’s husband in Fargo (“People don’t much use the three-cent stamp”). A native of Boulder, Colorado, Lynch spent the next decade popping up in supporting roles in a variety of films including Volcano, Face/Off, and Gothika. It was his chilling, scene-stealing turn in David Fincher’s Zodiac in 2007 that made moviegoers really take notice and when he went from being ‘that Norm Gunderson guy’ to ‘John Carroll Lynch, – dynamic character actor’. Lynch continued to impress in roles on the big screen in films like Gran Torino, Shutter Island, Jackie (where he played Lyndon Johnson), and The Founder, where he played one of the McDonald brothers. On the small screen he’s entertained audiences as John Wayne Gacy on American Horror Story and even had his own stand-alone episode of The Walking Dead.

"You're gunna lose the support of the people who've always had your back." Electric Entertainment has debuted an official trailer for the indie drama Lbj, telling the story of Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson, who became President after John F. Kennedy was assassinated in 1963. Oscar nominee Woody Harrelson stars as Lyndon B. Johnson, showing him before and during the election, as well as after the assassination when he had to take over the presidency during a time of national mourning. The film also stars Richard Jenkins as Sen. Richard Russell, Bill Pullman as Sen. Ralph Yarborough, Jeffrey Donovan as President John F. Kennedy, Kim Allen as Jacqueline Kennedy & Jennifer Jason Leigh as Lady Bird Johnson. This looks solid, with some very powerful scenes being featured in this trailer. Though it does seem a bit campy. Pablo Larraín’s film shows why the White House wives deserve their own biopics
Related: Jackie review – Natalie Portman astonishes in remarkably intimate portrait
First Ladies On Film is a pretty small entry in the movie encyclopedia, but Natalie Portman’s Jacqueline Kennedy surely shoots to the top of the heap because they are so rarely more than bit-parts in biopics of their husbands. We tend to remember the presidents and forget who played their mostly blameless wives, even though the faintly holy aura wafting around this nebulous office/non-job tends to suffuse both the casting process and the portrayals themselves. That usually means a big stage name or character player worthy of the role. Witness the women who have played Lady Bird Johnson: Felicity Huffman in Path To War (opposite Michael Gambon’s Lbj); Melissa Leo in HBO’s All The Way (Brian Cranston), and Jennifer Jason Leigh...

Jacqueline Kennedy was left in a state of shock, anguish and grief, and yet she also seems to have an intuited an important truth: The wave of suffering that threatened to overwhelm her (and the nation) counted for little against the longer obliterating tides of time and history.
It was her duty not only to mourn publicly, and properly, but to shore up the legacy of her husband’s never-to-be-completed first term.

Few film festivals in the world double as an acquisitions marketplace quite like the Toronto International Film Festival, which will screen more than 300 movies between September 8 and September 18. Most of these films have yet to land a U.S. distributor, and only a select group of titles will secure a distribution deal before the end of the fest.

Jay Roach for President.
HBO’s gripping docudrama “All the Way” chronicled the ruthlessness of American politics, as captured within a tumultuous eight months during the term of President Lyndon B. Johnson. But behind the scenes, under Roach’s administration, the production couldn’t have been more idyllic.
In the movie, Johnson fights hard to bring more equality to America. On set, Roach, who directed the film, was effortless in creating a more perfect union.

Accidental president. Vietnam. Civil Rights Act. Bully. This is Lyndon B. Johnson’s legacy, or at least how he’s often remembered. New HBO film All the Way seeks to illuminate many sides of the man who stepped into the highest office in the land after John F. Kennedy’s assassination. Bryan Cranston plays Lbj in the film, premiering on HBO tonight, following his Tony-winning turn as the president in All the Way on Broadway. After he’d already done extensive research and study of the play’s text (itself thoroughly researched by playwright Robert Schenkkan), Cranston went on a second visit to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum in Austin, TX, and that’s where the person of Lbj really clicked for the actor. “The character is always outside of you until you hopefully allow it to seep in. Then it becomes a part of you,” Cranston told HitFix.

Bryan Cranston breaks far away from his role as meth magnate Walter White to transform into former Commander-in-Chief Lyndon B. Johnson. Johnson is immediately tasked with passing the Civil Rights Act of 1964 upon entering office. “It ain’t gonna be easy, Dr. King,” Cranston says as Johnson during a phone call to Martin Luther King Jr. (Anthony Mackie) regarding the contentious bill. Jay Roach directs a script from Robert Schenkkan, who adapts his own play. “All the Way” received the Best Play honor from the Tony Awards in 2014. Bryan Cranston has been gracing our screens for more than three decades, but it was the pilot episode of Breaking Bad, back in 2008, that made us realize what a formidable performer he truly is. It hardly seemed possible that the man who played Hal in 151 episodes of Malcolm In The Middle could also embody the ultimate anti-hero, playing the meth-cooking chemistry teacher, Walter White. But, embody him he did, and now, every Cranston performance is highly anticipated. All The Way is no exception to that rule – bringing, as it does, the actor’s Tony-winning stage performance as President Lyndon B. Johnson to HBO.
