Annette Bening enlists Jodie Foster’s help to accomplish a swimming goal she failed to achieve decades prior in the first trailer for Netflix’s fact-based film Nyad.
The biographical drama from directors Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin centers on marathon swimmer Diana Nyad (Bening) attempting to become the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without the aid of a shark cage. Foster plays the athlete’s coach and friend Bonnie Stoll in the movie that plays select theaters Oct. 20 and then hits the streaming platform Nov. 3 after debuting at the Telluride Film Festival earlier this month.
Nyad’s trailer shows Foster offering a dose of reality when she hears the swimmer’s plan. “That’s insane,” Foster says. “Diana, you tried that when you were 28, and you did not make it when you were 28. You’re 60.”
This leads Bening to reply, “I don’t believe in imposed limitations.

August 22nd marked the 37th anniversary of the release director Tobe Hooper‘s sequel to his 1974 classic The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. A sequel appropriately titled The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (get it Here). Many fans celebrated the film with star Bill Moseley on social media – and the occasion inspired Moseley to reminisce about the moment when he ad-libbed one of the most popular lines in the film: “Lick my plate, you dog dick!”
In The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, Moseley played the maniacal goofball Chop Top, who is revealed to have had a metal plate placed in his head after he received a head wound during the Vietnam War. He wrote on Facebook, “Damn, a whole lotta love for The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 yesterday on the occasion of its 37th birthday! Love the movie, love the memories, love Chop Top! Tom Hanks has expertly re-invented himself over the years, moving from rom-com star (Big) to war hero (Saving Private Ryan) to character actor (Elvis), and as a writer-director with That Thing You Do! and Larry Crowne. His newest chapter: novelist.
He’s pretty damn good at this, too. In fact, his first novel, The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece, is helpful to anyone trying to understand that species of humanity known as “the star.” Or to master “Star-Speak,” their arcane lexicon.
At one point in Hanks’ novel, which hits shelves May 9, a director describes his star as “the latest hunk of forbidden fruit who, with patience, can be flattered, cajoled, babysat and made ‘camera ready’ for his leading role.” He adds: “I’m not saying you have to respect the man but you do have to respect the process.”
Hanks himself is a thoughtful, well-read man, not a predictable “hunk.

The identity of snarky gossiper Simon Kelleher’s killer in season one was identified at the conclusion of Peacock’s One of Us is Lying season one. And, mini-spoiler alert, the gang took care of that problem (Rip Jake) but wound up creating a new one. Which, of course, leads us to season two.
The two-minute season two trailer reveals the Murder Club members will be tormented by “Simon Says” and forced into doing his/her bidding or else their involvement in Jake’s “disappearance” will be exposed. The trailer suggests the club should keep their friends close, but their secrets even closer.
Season two is set to premiere on October 20, 2022, however, New York Comic Con attendees were treated to a preview of the first episode along with a Q&a with the show’s stars. Royal fans are remembering Queen Elizabeth II’s musical taste following her death at 96.
Tributes have been pouring in from around the world after Her Majesty passed away in Balmoral on Thursday.
The days after her death have seen well-wishers look at some of the things in life that brought her great joy - and music was among them.
The Queen was a big musical theatre fan and, perhaps surprisingly, she even enjoyed some Gary Barlow.
In 2016, the Queen’s cousin Lady Elizabeth Anson said that the monarch was “a fantastic dancer” with “great rhythm”.
Speaking on BBC Radio documentary Our Queen: 90 Musical Years, she explained: “The Queen loves the theatre and musicals like Showboat, Oklahoma! and Annie Get Your Gun.
“These were the tunes that remained in one’s head and were very danceable to.”
Others told the documentary that her taste was “mainstream”, with “no airs and graces...

Exclusive: Johnny Depp movie Minamata is finally getting a U.S. release, we can reveal, but not from MGM which had previously acquired the film.
Iervolino and Lady Bacardi Entertainment (Ilbe) are now teaming up with Samuel Goldwyn Films to give the movie a North American release in theaters beginning December 15. The platformed release is due to extend across U.S. and Canada into 2022 and the team are looking to position it for awards consideration.
This update comes after the film’s director, Andrew Levitas, complained earlier this year that MGM was “burying” Minamata due to Depp’s well publicized off-screen issues. You can read the filmmaker’s impassioned letter to the studio here. Depp also decried the non-release in an interview in August in which he said the film deserved to be seen but was shelved because he was being “boycotted” by Hollywood.

Back when I reviewed Purgatory Road I said it might be the film to finally put director Mark Savage over in the US market. Instead, he dropped off the map for four years. Now he and co-writer Tom Parnell back with Painkiller, a sequel to their 2016 dark comedy Stressed to Kill which I haven’t seen. That film featured Bill Oberst Jr. as Bill Johnson, a man who takes the doctor’s advice to get rid of stress a bit too literally and starts killing those who annoy him. In Painkiller, originally titled Stressed to Kill: Doctor’s Orders, he’s back, but his killing has a different focus.
Bill is a radio talk jock.

MGM has bought the Johnny Depp drama “Minamata” and has set an awards-season release of Feb. 5, 2021, through its revived American International Pictures label.
MGM also acquired all rights to “Minamata” in Canada, Germany and Switzerland. The film premiered at the Berlin Film Festival in February.
Set in 1971, Depp portrays photojournalist Eugene Smith, who’s become a recluse and disconnected from the world he once shot. After receiving one final assignment from Life Magazine editor Robert Hayes (played by Bill Nighy), he must travel to the Japanese coastal city of Minamata, which has been ravaged by mercury poisoning. Assisted by an impassioned Japanese translator and encouraged by local villagers, his powerful images expose decades of gross negligence by the country’s Chisso Corporation.
“Minamata” also stars Jun Kunimura, Ryo Kase, Tadanobu Asano and Akiko Iwase. Andrew Levitas directed the film from a screenplay by Levitas, David K. Kessler, Stephen Deuters and Jason Forman.

Veteran film producer and financier Bill Johnson, co-founder and co-chairman of Lotus Entertainment, and fashion stylist Leah Forester, a cast member on the short-lived 2016 Bravo reality series “There Goes Motherhood,” splashed out $9.7 million for a clean-lined architectural villa in Pacific Palisades, Calif., with positively cinematic views up and down the coastline from Palos Verdes to Malibu. Sequestered down a private, dead-end lane on two parcels that together span almost half of an acre, the approximately 3,500-square-foot residence is equipped with state-of-the-art sound, lighting and security systems and contains four bedrooms and 3.5 bathrooms over three floors.
Discreetly tucked behind a muscular, exposed concrete wall next to a two-car car-port, the top floor entry leads to a light-filled, open-plan living, dining and kitchen space with cerused wide-plank white oak hardwood floors and a vaulted ceiling. At one end of the room, the sleekly appointed kitchen features smooth-paneled Hawaiian koa wood cabinetry and...

Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers is actually the first movie in the Sleepaway Camp franchise that I’d ever seen. The VHS cover art lured me in as a kid by teasing possible appearances from iconic villains, with Freddy’s glove and Jason’s hockey mask poking out of a woman’s backpack. I was a bit too young to understand the concept of trademarks at that age, so you can imagine my disappointment when neither character made so much as a cameo. Since I hadn’t seen the first film and didn’t have any context for the franchise as a whole (or that twist), I just thought of the movie as low-budget trash.
As I’ve grown older, however, I’ve discovered that low-budget trash can be a lovely thing. And I think it’s important to distinguish trash from “so bad they’re good” movies like Troll 2...

Director Roger Donaldson has enjoyed a rewarding Hollywood career, but he began in New Zealand where this fantasy mini-epic about resistance to a political takeover became the first Kiwi picture to win an international release and launch a national film industry. The film’s young star didn’t do too badly either — the ‘ordinary guy’ who becomes rebel terrorist is played by none other than Sam Neill. Sold as an action thriller, the show is really a primer on how a democracy can be turned into a police state, with the public’s full approval.

Here you have another Scream Factory title, which will be judged a little harsher than usual. MGM recently released its own Blu-ray version of Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, and for the most part, it was just fine. In addition to the MGM Region A release, there was also an Arrow Video-released Region B Blu-ray, which most fans have considered the “definitive edition” until now. I have nothing but respect for Arrow Video. They are basically the Criterion of B-movies right now. But I think this new TCM Blu-ray may just trump their excellent release, at least ever-so-slightly in the Pq department. As for the movie itself, I’m a big fan, always have been. I know it’s a divisive title among fans because it abandoned the relentlessly terrifying tone of the first movie, and opted for a more humorous approach, but it’s utterly fascinating. That opening scene is...

This third week of April has some exciting home entertainment offerings for us genre fans, including the special edition releases of two cult classics I adore, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 and The Stuff. An indie film I’ve been hearing about for a while now, Grimewave, also makes its way to DVD this Tuesday and while it may not be traditional horror, Oscar-winner The Revenant certainly has enough badassery contained within its cinematic frames to be worthy of mentioning this week, and it arrives on both Blu-ray and DVD on April 19th.
Other notable releases this week include Smothered (which features a ton of horror icons and was directed by John Schneider of Smallville and Dukes of Hazzard fame), 15 Till Midnight, Classroom 6, Ip Man 3, German Angst and She Wolf Rising.
