Oscar winner Jeremy Irons has joined the cast of Palme d’Or-winning director Bille August’s prestige limited series “The Count of Monte Cristo,” which also stars Sam Claflin.
A sprawling adaptation of Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel, the English-language series is produced by Mediawan’s banner Palomar, the leading Italian company behind “That Dirty Black Bag” and “The Name of the Rose,” in collaboration with another Mediawan label, France’s Demd Productions. The series’ five-month shoot will wrap in Malta in December, after having lensed in France and Italy.
The show underscores Mediawan’s strategy to pursue prestige scripted projects with strong international potential under its €100 million co-investment agreement signed earlier this year with private equity film Entourage Ventures.
“The Count of Monte Cristo” marks Irons’ third collaboration with August, who directed him in “Night Train to Lisbon” and “The House of Spirits.” A revered Danish filmmaker, August previously won...

The uneven Japanese animated fantasy “The Deer King” often resembles the sort of Studio Ghibli action-adventure that made animation figurehead Hayao Miyazaki internationally famous, especially “Princess Mononoke” and “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind.” “The Deer King” not only looks like those Studio Ghibli staples, but also follows a plot that recalls Ghibli-style high fantasies: two warring feudal kingdoms try either to capture or enlist Van, a resourceful ex-soldier who may or may not be immune to a devastating plague.
Comparisons between “The Deer King” and Studio Ghibli’s better known movies seem inevitable, especially given how many of this movie’s creators learned their trade as animators and animation directors at Studio Ghibli, particularly co-directors Masashi Ando and Masayuki Miyaji, and key animators Kenichi Konishi and Kenichi Yoshida. Thankfully, what works in so many Ghibli movies also mostly works in “The Deer King,” given the craft and consideration...

Lifetime is going for the royal hat-trick with a third Harry & Meghan television movie.
The cable network has greenlit Harry & Meghan: Escaping the Palace, almost a year after first revealing that the second sequel in its royal franchise was in development.
It follows 2018’s Harry & Meghan and 2019’s Harry & Meghan: Becoming Royal and comes as the pair are front page news again following their controversial Oprah interview on CBS.
Lifetime said that Harry & Meghan: Escaping the Palace would reveald what really happened inside the palace that drove Harry and Meghan to leave everything behind in order to make a future for themselves and their son Archie.
It will detail Meghan’s growing isolation and sadness, their disappointment that ‘The Firm’ was not defending them against the press’s attacks and Harry’s fear that history would repeat itself and he would not be able to protect his wife and son...

A lot could happen in the next four-and-a-half months, but so far, it doesn’t take a box office analyst to predict a phenomenal run in theaters for Avengers: Endgame, with the film’s long-awaited first teaser already beating the record set by Avengers: Infinity War for most views of a single trailer.
Still, if you want an authoritative opinion on the matter, CNBC has relayed word from BoxOffice.com’s chief analyst Shawn Robbins, who laid out his projections as follows:
“There are always caveats to forecasts this far out from release, but we think it’s another strong candidate for $600 million or more domestically, and possibly $2 billion worldwide.”
To put this into perspective, the world-conquering Infinity War took in a reported total of over $678 million domestically and $2.048 billion worldwide, which means that this new Endgame forecast suggests a similar level of success. Robbins went on to elaborate a little his predictions,...

A recent report from Business Insider has offered a thorough analysis of what this box office success likely means for Sony and the Venom franchise, not to mention the Spider-Man property, too. Media Rights Capital has agreed to fully finance “Knives Out,” a murder mystery starring Daniel Craig, Variety has confirmed. The movie brings together the James Bond star with Rian Johnson, the director of “The Last Jedi.”
“Knives Out” moved up on Craig’s dance card after creative differences between the actor and director Danny Boyle forced a behind-the-camera change on Bond 25. Shooting on a new 007 adventure has been delayed until a new filmmaker can be found to replace Boyle.
The Media Rights Capital deal is for the world and the film is set to begin shooting in November. The company will presumably have to later find a distribution partner to release the picture. CAA Media Finance and FilmNation auctioned the property, which was considered to be one of the hotter packages available at this year’s festival.

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.

As expected, Labor Day weekend wasn’t good for the two new wide releases at all, although the romantic drama The Light Between Oceans (DreamWorks), starring Michael Fassbender and Alicia Vikander, ended up doing far better of the two. Also as expected, Fede Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe (Screen Gems) won the weekend with a four-day total of $19.7 million, a little less than I predicted. The Light Between Oceans ended up with slightly over $6 million, roughly the same as my original prediction but 20th Century Fox’s thriller Morgan, starring Kate Mara, bomb-bomb-bombed with a ridiculously bad four-day opening of just $2.5 million in its first four days. The Mexican comedy No Manches Frida (Lionsgate/Pantelion) ended up faring better in just 362 theaters,...

They previously made a pre-fest North American rights deal with Lionsgate on Maggie, the Henry Hobson-directed zombie film that stars Arnold Schwarzenegger and Abigail Breslin, the latter playing the title character who goes through the slow corpsey metamorphosis. Jeremy Degruson and Ben Stassen's animated Thunder and the House of Magic kicks off with an unconscionable act of cruelty: A family abandons a cat on the street, leaving him to desperately dodge traffic. We know the orange tabby Thunder (Murray Blue) isn't going to get run over — not even a family film produced through Belgian tax shelters would get so dark so quickly — but it sets a jarring tone, particularly since the scene is an excuse for the first of the film's many Pov-heavy chase sequences.
The story is serviceable enough: Thunder finds his way into the spooky home of a kindly old children's magician (Doug Stone), and must band together with the distrustful resident animals to prevent the magician's evil real-estate agent nephew (Grant George) f...

Oz the Great and Powerful is a big bet. One of the biggest bets Hollywood has ever made. And maybe one of the better ones. "Is Oz the Great and Powerful the type of film that moviegoers will embrace?" Doug Stone, president of Box Office Analyst rhetorically asked in an email. "…The preliminary answer is, yes, it is." Opening Friday, the Sam Raimi-directed Wizard of Oz prequel, featuring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Michelle Williams and a price tag reportedly as large as $325 million (including marketing costs, as frequently noted), has been winning generally favorable reviews from critics, and should easily score Hollywood's biggest opening weekend since The Hobbit: An Unexpected...

The Original family of vampires will remain intact in their leap from The Vampire Diaries to their own series, planted spinoff The Originals. Claire Holt has been cast as a lead in Originals, which will be introduced in the April 25 episode of the CW drama. She will reprise her recurring Tvd role as Rebekah, the vampire sister of Klaus (Joseph Morgan) and Elijah (Daniel Gillies). The trio represents all surviving Original siblings as their two other brothers recently faced their demise on Tvd. Holt had been rumored to join The Originals from the get-go, but I’d heard talks hit a snag and Tvd‘s Phoebe Tonkin was signed for the potential spinoff instead. Now Holt, who just signed with CAA, becomes the fourth cast member of the original series to transition to the spinoff. Written by Tvd co-creator/executive producer Julie Plec, The Originals centers on the Original family of vampires,...

Press Release Box Office Analyst®, the leading source of analytical information that drives decision making in the movie exhibition and distribution industry, announces today its projections for the third quarter of 2012, including blockbusters The Dark Knight Rises, The Amazing Spider-man and surprise Ted. “After animated hits such as Madagascar 3: Europe’S Most Wanted and Brave, it’s now the superheroes’ turn to ‘kapow’ box office records when Batman and Spider-Man leap off the screens in July,” said Doug Stone, president of Box Office Analyst. “We’ll finish the second quarter of 2012 up approximately seven percent for the year, compared to the end of the second quarter of 2011, which is a positive result, considering how strong the second frame was last year.” The third quarter of 2012 flies on to screens when Columbia Pictures’ The Amazing Spider-man, opens on July 3.
