The Carmilla Movie, a feature spawned from the vampire web series of the same name funded by female hygiene brand U by Kotex, will debut in Cineplex theaters across Canada on October 26, with a wide release on Fullscreen the following day.
Elise Bauman, who plays Laura Hollis in the web series and upcoming film, and Natasha Negovanlis, who plays Carmilla Karnstein (the vampire), debuted the film’s full-length trailer today at their New York Comic Con panel. Bauman and Negovanlis portray lesbian partners in Carmilla, one of whom happens to be a 300-year-old vampire. Other cast members include Dominique Provost-Chalkley (Murdoch Mysteries) and Nicole Stamp (The Handmaid’s Tale).
Produced by the Toronto-based production shop Shaftesbury, The Carmilla Movie will find the web series star couple in a Toronto apartment, Carmilla no longer a vampire. When she starts to once again exhibit vampiric tendencies, she and Laura meet with old friends to fix the problem.

Carmilla is so hot right now. The cult favorite web series about vampires and romance has landed a book deal from Kcp Loft, an imprint of publisher Kids Can Press.
The book, due out in the spring of 2019, will be the latest off-YouTube venture for Carmilla, which has a devoted audience of fans (who refer to themselves as “Creampuffs”). Beyond the literary world, Carmilla’s stars will reprise their roles in a movie that recently began filming.
Details about the book’s plot are sparse, but it will likely continue to story of Laura (Elise Bauman) and Carmilla (Natasha Negovanlis), who form a devoted partnership even though Carmilla is a vampire. The original Carmilla web series, which was sponsored by feminine hygiene brand U By Kotex, was itself based on a 19th century novella of the same name by Joseph Sheridan Le Fanu.

The 2015 Spirit Awards were handed out today and it was Birdman taking Best Feature and Best Actor (Michael Keaton) while Boyhood went home a double winner taking Best Director (Richard Linklater) and Best Supporting Actress (Patricia Arquette). However, while that's the result for the two big guns that will be going head-to-head at tomorrow night's Oscars, Nightcrawler was also a double winner taking Best Screenplay and Best First Feature, both awarded to writer/director Dan Gilroy. Otherwise, no big surprises with Julianne Moore (Still Alice) taking Best Actress and J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) taking Supporting Actor, Citizenfour took Best Documentary and Birdman scored a third win for Emmanuel Lubezki for Best Cinematography. Justin Simien (Dear White People) took home Best First Screenplay and, whoa!, Look!, Whiplash was also a double winner, with Tom Cross winning for Best Editing (well deserved!) and anticipated Oscar winner in the same category, Ida won Best Foreign Language Film.

Martha Stephens and Aaron Katz, two graduates of the North Carolina School of the Arts, join forces to direct Land Ho!, a comedy which follows two former brothers-in-law, Mitch (Earl Lynn Nelson) and Colin (Paul Eenhorn), as they go on vacation to Iceland in an effort to reclaim their youth.
Both men are getting over some unsuccessful relationships and are frustrated with their jobs, so their hope is that they can escape the isolation they feel by going to a foreign country. What results is both hilarious and heartfelt and will no doubt leave moviegoers with a smile on their face.
Last week, Martha and Aaron were at the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in Los Angeles, California for the Land Ho! press day, and I landed an exclusive interview with the duo. They spoke about how they spilt up the directorial duties while shooting, what it was like filming in Iceland (which,...

On the heels of the debacle over ABC‘s summer series Weird Desk, the network has signed a first-look deal with Weird Desk producer Shaftesbury Films, Christina Jennings’ long-running Canadian production company. Weird Desk would’ve been the first U.S. series for the company, which in August 2011 set up a Los Angeles-based division run by Tom Mazza and Maggie Murphy targeting the American market. But after giving the project a straight-to-series order in early December, ABC shelved it a week later, reportedly under pressure from Marvel over alleged similarities to the company’s ABC pilot S.H.I.E.L.D., from The Avengers‘ Joss Whedon. Now Mazza and Murphy will be able to develop new projects for ABC. Like other U.S. divisions of international production companies like Gaumont and Cineflix, Shaftesbury is largely in the straight-to-series business. It recently shopped a spec as part of the January pitch season. In Canada, Shaftesbury...

After having the gals covered next summer with soap Mistresses, ABC also is setting up a show for the guys. The network has given a 13-episode straight-to-series order to mystery supernatural/UFO drama Weird Desk for summer 2013. The show hails from Christina Jennings’ Canadian production company Shaftesbury, which has a U.S. division. Written by Carl Binder (Stargate) and David Titcher (The Librarian), Weird Desk is in the vein of The X Files. Based on the alleged real-life mysteries from this world and beyond, it centers on the workings of a clandestine organization rumored to be named “Weird Desk.” Working above the levels of top secret and above the office of the President, the unit is the destination for mysterious intelligence rerouted from the CIA and Nsa. Tasked with investigating and solving occurrences of the paranormal, supernatural and sometimes extra-terrestrial, “Weird Desk” is led by Morgan, an obstinate, socially inept...

Exclusive: Another leading Canadian production company, Christina Jennings’ Shaftesbury Films, is launching a U.S. arm. I hear veteran U.S. TV executive Tom Mazza is leaving Toronto/Burbank-based Cookie Jar Entertainment, where he served as Evp and head of worldwide TV for the past year and a half, to run Shaftesbury’s new Los Angeles offices. He is expected to bring with him former Upn drama head and Regency TV executive Maggie Murphy, who joined him at Cookie Jar at the beginning of this year and was his top development executive. I hear Mazza starts at Shaftesbury at the end of this week. At Cookie Jar, Mazza headed the television division, managing the company’s development and production departments as well as sales and distribution, program acquisition and international co-productions. He also ran the company’s newly launched primetime label The Jar, as Cookie Jar, known mostly as a producer of kids programming,...

NBC’s canceled “The Listener” starred Craig Olejnik as a telepathic paramedic who uses his gift to solve crimes. That’s a nifty little premise, but I never got around to watching it, and apparently neither did anyone else. I never knew when NBC was showing the show, so it just flew by its first season and was summarily canceled when not enough people tuned in. The Peacock network may not have had any faith in the show, but the Canadians think otherwise. Variety reports that “The Listener” has received a 13-episode Season 2 order from Canada’s CTV network and its sister sci-fi/fantasy cable channel Space, while Fox International will handle the show’s international distribution. Ratings for the show in the States were abysmal, but like all genre shows, I’m sure there are fans in the States hoping for a U.S. channel to pick up its second season.
