The Pitt wrapped its spectacular first season on Max yesterday, and while we won't spoil the ending for those that have yet to watch it, we will say that Season 2 looks to be shaping up to be even better than the freshman outing. Taking place over the course of one 15-hour shift at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital, The Pitt tackles real-world issues within the confines of its fictional narrative. It appears as if Season 2 will follow that same trend, especially when it comes to the current state of the healthcare system in the United States.

Sitting down with Variety to discuss the phenomenal medical drama were executive producer and star Noah Wyle, EP John Wells, and creator R. Scott Gemmill. As many Americans know, President Trump and his administration have already taken aim at things like the Affordable Care Act, prescription drug pricing, and abortion, and are proposing further sweeping changes to U.

Considered by some to be a spiritual successor to ER, mainly due to the presence of actor Noah Wyle, who portrays Doctor Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, The Pitt is the newest medical drama to give audiences a confrontational look at the struggles that healthcare workers face each day. Ever since it began streaming on Max, The Pitt has received praise from critics, audiences, and even medical professionals, who note its realism and accuracy. In a recent article published by Vulture, one aspect of the show was critiqued by real-life MD Dr. Lukas Ramcharran. Ramcharran, like many who have seen the show, praised it for its realism and took the time to clear up one of the inconsistencies that exist between narrative storytelling and real life.

Emphasizing Realism Over Drama Max

A pitfall that many medical dramas have fallen prey to is when realism becomes the secondary focus, and the dramatic tension between characters takes priority.

Thursday was a big day for Noah Wyle. Not only did he deliver an Emmy-worthy turn on The Pitt, but he did something he's never done before: sign a doctor's board certification.

Wyle and several of his castmates on The Pitt — Alexandra Metz, Taylor Dearden, Michael Hyatt, Amielynn Abellera, and Brandon Mendez Homer — visited Children's Hospital Los Angeles to support the 10th annual Make March Matter campaign. During the visit, two doctors told the actor that they were inspired by his performance as Dr. John Carter on ER to go into medicine. One of them, Dr. Brad Goldberg, had the five-time Emmy nominee autograph his board certification from the American Board of Pediatrics.

"This means more than coming from the actual board," Goldberg said.

"Wow, this is a first for me," a visibly moved Wyle said as he prepared to sign.

The Pitt takes its name from its setting, the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. "Welcome to the Pitt," Noah Wyle's Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch greets his new medical students and interns in the pilot. The Max medical drama covers a single 15-hour ER shift over 15 episodes in more or less real time, and it doesn't take a brain surgeon to figure out that the Pitt is also the metaphorical pit. Welcome to the pit. That's where Robby is by the end of Thursday's episode, "7:00 P.M.," the 13th hour, which features Wyle's best performance yet.

Robby's day has been terrible from the start. Against better judgment, he's working on the fourth anniversary of the death of his mentor, Dr. Adamson, who died from Covid, and has been beset with flashbacks and mini panic attacks.

Exclusive: Dave Andron, writer and executive producer on hit FX series including Justified and Snowfall, has signed an overall deal with FX Productions.

Under the agreement, Andron will write, executive produce and supervise new projects for FX. He is currently part of the creative team behind the Snowfall spinoff series, starring Gail Bean and Isaiah John who are reprising their roles from the mothership series. The project received a pilot order from FX earlier this week with casting due to begin shortly and production estimated to kick off this summer.

“As we witnessed with Justified and Snowfall, Dave is a gifted, compelling storyteller,” said Nick Grad, President, FX Entertainment. “We’re already hard at work on a Snowfall spinoff, along with other exciting projects under his new overall deal with FX.”

The “Snowfall” spinoff just took a major step forward, with the potential series scoring a pilot order at FX, Variety has learned exclusively.

The untitled drama was first reported to be in early development in 2023 ahead of the series finale of “Snowfall.” As reported at the time, “Snowfall” star Gail Bean will return for the spinoff in the role of Wanda Bell-Simmons. She will be joined by fellow original cast member Isaiah John, who played Leon Simmons.

The official logline for the pilot states, “Set in 90s Los Angeles soon after the end of the original series, a recovering addict (Bean) strives to take West Coast rap mainstream despite potential infighting from a harrowing gang war.”

Malcolm Spellman will write and executive produce the pilot, with “Snowfall” alums Dave Andron, Thomas Schlamme, Julie DeJoie, Michael London and Trevor Engelson all executive producing as well. FX Productions is the studio.

The renewal has been confirmed as Season 1 of the medical drama is halfway through its 15-episode run, with the season finale coming next April 10. Today, the show is dominating Max's charts of most popular content.

The Pitt stars Noah Wyle as Dr. Michael "Robby" Robinavitch, the chief attendant of the emergency room at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Hospital. At the beginning of 2025, HBO will debut “The Pitt,” which centers on a Pittsburgh hospital, while Mike White’s anthology series returns with a new group of tourists in Thailand and one familiar face with “The White Lotus” Season 3. Max is getting procedural next month. On Thursday, the streaming service set a premiere date and released a new trailer for the “ER”-esque medical drama “The Pitt.”

The series follows a single 15-hour shift hour-by-hour in the emergency room of a Pittsburgh hospital on a particularly crazy day. There are 52 patients in the waiting room by 7 a.m., and it’s a class of med students’ first day on the job. The doctor in charge is Michael “Robby” Robinavitch (“ER” veteran Noah Wyle), who is great at his job but not dealing with his emotions. It’s the anniversary of his mentor’s death, and he’s stuffed his feelings down for the past five years.

“150,000 people die every day in the world,” he tells a med student who just lost a patient. “Today you got one of them. And we’re gonna get more of them before the shift is over.

Denzel Washington is by far one of the greatest actors of our generation, but even the best have some duds. HBO and Max head Casey Bloys has responded to the estate of Michael Crichton, and its lawsuit arguing that the upcoming Max series “The Pitt” is an unauthorized reboot of “ER,” telling reporters he doesn’t expect it to have an impact on the show’s early 2025 rollout.

“I’m sure I’m not supposed to talk about active litigation, but I will say the idea that a show can’t be set in an ER seems kind of unrealistic on its face, that no other show can be set in a hospital emergency room,” he told reporters on Tuesday at an HBO and Max press conference. “I mean, it’s kind of a staple on television. I don’t anticipate impacts on the show itself, but I’ll leave that to the Warner Bros. lawyers.”

The University of Southern California’s (USC) School of Cinematic Arts (Sca) announced the creation of the John Singleton Lounge during a special screening of the series finale of FX’s Snowfall — Singleton’s final work — on the campus Thursday night. Set for location outside of the dean’s office suites, the seating area will be decorated with posters showcasing the work of the late filmmaker and USC alum who also co-founded the school’s African American Cinema Society while he was a student there.

“I want to thank John for being my son, and I want to thank John for listening to me and allowing me to guide his life,” said Singleton’s mother, Sheila Ward-Johnson, in opening remarks during the event, which was one of a series of screenings Sca has held throughout the 2022-2023 academic year as part of a yearlong celebration honoring the Academy Award-nominated director.

The legacy of John Singleton reigned over the black carpet at the sixth and final season premiere of FX’s “Snowfall” on Wednesday night.

As the cast filed into the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures to view a screening of the first episode, Michael Hyatt (Cissy Saint) and Carter Hudson (Teddy McDonald) reflected on the legacy of Singleton, who co-created the series. Singleton died in April 2019 after suffering a stroke at the age of 51. The “Boyz n the Hood” writer-director made history as the first Black person to score an Oscar nomination for best director.

“John taught me to use my voice in ways that I had not given myself permission to use my voice in my career, in my life,” Hyatt tearfully shared with Variety. “Because of his presence in my life and the time that I had to spend with him, he empowered me to use that voice.

Longtime crime fiction novelist and “Snowfall” writer Walter Mosley says John Singleton gave writers everything creatively that they needed to know to continue “Snowfall” before his April 2019 death.

“Snowfall” is set to premiere its sixth and final season on Feb. 22 on FX. The series has become the network’s top-rated show, averaging 4.3 million total viewers across linear, VOD and streaming with its Season 5 debut.

Aside from its stellar cast, the show’s success can easily be attributed to Dave Andron, co-creater, executive producer and writer; Mosley, executive producer and writer; and the late Singleton, who co-created the series alongside Andron and Eric Amadio. Singleton died about three months before show’s Season 3 premiere, and the show has since maintained the essence and meticulousness of Singleton’s creative decisions and guidance.

Olivia Newman’s mystery film Where the Crawdads Sing has arrived on Netflix in the US and immediately jumped to No 1 on the site’s most popular movies ranking.

The film, which follows the story of a girl named Kya, features Daisy-Edgar Jones, Taylor John Smith, Harris Dickinson, and David Strathairn.

Set in the 1950s and 1960s in rural North Carolina, the narrative blends elements of murder mystery, romance, and nature writing with a coming-of-age story about Kya, who grew up alone in the marshes.

The film is based on the bestselling book of the same name which sold more than 12m copies since its publication in 2018. It was featured as part of Reese Witherspoon’s book club, and the actor now serves as the film’s executive producer.

While audiences on Netflix are clearly loving the movie adaptation, critics were not so convinced.
