10 TV Shows About Mysteries That Were Never Solved
Image
Not every mystery series gets a satisfying ending, like Persons Unknown, leaving viewers hanging on unresolved plotlines. Santa Clarita Diet and The Society both fell victim to abrupt cancellations, leaving key mysteries unanswered to the disappointment of fans. Shows like FlashForward and Kyle Xy were cut short just as they were starting to reveal intriguing mysteries, leaving audiences craving more answers.

A good overarching mystery is one of the most consistent ways to keep an audience tuning in to a TV show week after week, but not every series that does so manages to present satisfying answers before ending. After the success of series like Lost, network TV quickly became flooded with copycats hoping to replicate the popularity of the long-running shows with similar mysteries baked-in to their loglines. While the ending of Lost might not have been the most satisfying conclusion in the world, it at least had the chance to provide some answers.

1974: An Ode to "Female Trouble" and Taffy Davenport
Image
by Nick Taylor

As regular Tfe commenter par pointed out in the comments for my Tina Holmes piece last week, there’s a lot of supporting actresses from 1999 who I could honor this Pride month. It’s a very tempting idea, and though many of those women will likely get their flowers later in the year - who wouldn’t want to pick over Election as the nonsense of the US Presidential race really starts heating up? - I think this is a terrific opportunity to hop across major eras and remind folks that, hey, queers have been around and making films for a long fucking time. We’ve been rubbing our grubby hands all over cinema since its inception.

If we’re talking about queer cinema, and if we’re talking about a peak among peaks, there’s really nowhere else to go but Female Trouble, John Waters’ inspiring...

1999: Tina Holmes in "Edge of Seventeen"
Image
by Nick Taylor

Hello, strangers! Did you miss my supporting actress write-ups? With no smackdown to latch onto like a gay barnacle, I’ll be hopping onto our 10|25|50|75|100 anniversary format to look back on supporting actressing feats of years past. For those keeping track at home, this means I’ll be writing up performances from films released in the US in 2014, 1999, 1974, and 1949. If you would like to see the whole list of films and performances I'm considering for this series and a longer run-down of it, click here! The dream is to post these corresponding to months of release, or, barring that, themed categories based on what month it is. Like how June is gay Pride month, meaning I can write about queer films and queer actresses all month long! Broader schedules hopefully mean more wiggle room to write about as many films as I like!

For my first entry in this series,...

Netflix Added 5 New Movies And 1 New TV Show Today
Image
A recent survey found that one in five of Americans heavily rely on streaming services to help them cope with the trials and tribulations posed by the coronavirus pandemic. Netflix should be well aware of this fact, too, as their subscriber base has grown tremendously while other businesses – particularly those in the entertainment industry – are currently languishing.

Of course, periods of growth often precede times of rapid decline, and Netflix’s success has not been without its own complications. As more and more regions in the United States are reinstating quarantine, people consume content at faster rates than ever before. And in order to keep their subscribers satisfied, Netflix has tried their best to provide new material.

Today, for instance, August 27th, the streamer has added a total of 5 new movies and 1 new TV show, and the complete list is as follows:

5 New Movies

Ausiello: I’m not feeling it. And, if this is who they end up hiring, we deserve some kind of trophy or medal. Or something.

© Nick Stepowyj[Editor's Note: Melanie Lynskey (Hello I Must Be Going) is guest blogging. We love her. And now there's a lotta love to go around. - Nathaniel R]

After my love letter to Noah Taylor I thought it might be kind of fun to write to some people for The Film Experience and ask Them who they'd want to write a love letter to. Hopefully this is making some kind of sense. So I made a little dream list of people I respect and admire beyond all reason and I sent them a little e-mail saying:

I've seen you do work that has made me want to write you a love letter because it's moved me so deeply. Who or what would you like to write a love letter to? What piece of art or artist or feeling has moved you in this way?"

Here are a few amazing responses I got from these talented and passionate individuals!

Half Nelson Review – Ryan Gosling, Shareeka Epps d: Ryan Fleck
Half Nelson (2006) Direction: Ryan Fleck Cast: Ryan Gosling, Shareeka Epps, Jeff Lima, Nathan Corbett, Tina Holmes Screenplay: Ryan Fleck, Anna Boden Oscar Movies Recommended Ryan Gosling, Shareeka Epps, Half Nelson Although Ryan Fleck's raw, edgy drama Half Nelson could use a little trimming, it is nevertheless a compelling drama rooted on Ryan Gosling's mesmerizing performance as Dan Dunne, a crack-addicted, inner-city high-school history teacher who resorts to drugs in spite of (or perhaps because of) his desire to change the world for the better. Co-written by Fleck and Anna Boden, Half Nelson chiefly chronicles the relationship between Dan and one of his students, Drey (capably played by Shareeka Epps), a teenager whose brother is in jail for dealing drugs and whose future looks equally dim. In most Hollywood movies, those two disparate characters would find redemption through one another, but to their credit, Fleck and Boden don't resort...

Persons Unknown: Watch the (likely) Last Episode; Are You Satisfied?
Last night, NBC aired the final two episodes of their mystery-thriller series, Persons Unknown. The show revolves around a group of people who wake up in a small town and must figure out how to survive and escape. The cast includes Chadwick Boseman, Lee Purcell, Jason Wiles, Andy Greenfield, Daisy Betts, Tina Holmes, Alan Ruck, Kate Lang Johnson, Sean O'Bryan, and Gerald Kyd.

NBC waited until summer to air Persons Unknown; a time when fewer people watch television and their isn't much competition. On Monday nights, it got very poor ratings, even for a summer show, and was consequently sent to the TV graveyard known as Saturday nights.

Remi Aubuchon, one of the show's executive producers, has said that the show was originally envisioned to have self-contained seasons but could easily run for multiple years. Based on the ratings and their treatment of the...

Persons Unknown: NBC Won't Air Episode 11, "Seven Sacrifice"
Are you a devoted viewer of NBC's Persons Unknown? If you end up watching all 13 episodes, you have to be.

Persons Unknown follows the challenges of a group of strangers who wake up in a ghost town and are unable to leave. The series features Chadwick Boseman, Lee Purcell, Jason Wiles, Andy Greenfield, Daisy Betts, Tina Holmes, Alan Ruck, Kate Lang Johnson, Sean O’Bryan, and Gerald Kyd.

After five weeks of poor ratings, NBC moved the series from Mondays to the "TV graveyard," Saturday nights. The show's been airing there for four weeks but some viewers have been understandably worried that the network won't air all episodes of the mystery series.

It turns out their fears weren't unwarranted. There are just four episodes left but that's plenty of time to mess with the schedule.

Executive Producer Remi Aubuchon Exclusive Interview Persons Unknown
From Academy Award-winning writer Christopher McQuarrie and executive producers Heather McQuarrie and Remi Aubuchon, Persons Unknown is NBC’s one-hour mystery drama, in which a group of seven strangers must come together to solve the puzzle of their lives.

All of them have been taken from their families and have arrived in a deserted town with no recollection of how they got there, and they must rely on each other to get out. While being held hostage, the strangers are constantly watched by security cameras with no idea who or what is behind them, and every attempt to leave is thwarted by unforeseen circumstances. At every turn, these strangers are threatened physically, psychologically and emotionally.

Showrunner Remi Aubuchon recently talked exclusively to Collider about developing the 13-episode series, figuring out how to gradually reveal the show’s mysteries to viewers and what he loves about the sci-fi/mystery genre. He...

Persons Unknown: NBC Moves Mystery Series to Saturdays
As expected, NBC has pulled their low-rated new series, Persons Unknown, from the Monday night line-up. Thankfully they haven't yanked it off the air completely. They're just moving it to the Saturday night graveyard.

Persons Unknown revolves around a group of strangers who awaken in a ghost town and are unable to leave. The cast includes Chadwick Boseman, Lee Purcell, Jason Wiles, Andy Greenfield, Daisy Betts, Tina Holmes, Alan Ruck, Kate Lang Johnson, Sean O’Bryan, and Gerald Kyd.

The TV show has been performing very poorly so July 5th will be its last Monday night airing. Beginning July 17th, it will show up on NBC's Saturday night schedule instead.

The Visa Gymnastics Championships will preempt the show on August 14th. Otherwise, it looks like Persons Unknown will run uninterrupted and conclude with episode 13 on September 4th. Producers have maintained that...

Persons Unknown: New NBC Mystery Series; Cancel or Keep It?
The peacock network recently premiered a new mystery series for the summer called Persons Unknown. Will the series last? Will viewers get answers to their questions or be left hanging?

Persons Unknown revolves around a group of strangers who wake up in a strange hotel and find that they're in a ghost town and unable to leave. They see security cameras observing them and their unknown captors create mistrust among the group by offering freedom if they hurt the others. The cast includes Chadwick Boseman, Lee Purcell, Jason Wiles, Andy Greenfield, Daisy Betts, Tina Holmes, Alan Ruck, Kate Lang Johnson, Sean O'Bryan, and Gerald Kyd.

The NBC mystery series debuted on June 7th to very disappointing ratings. The premiere attracted a poor 1.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic and just 4.38 million viewers. That represents a distant third place for the timeslot and is...

Take seven people who don't know each other, plop them involuntarily in a ghost town, make it clear to them that they're being watched -- and toyed with -- and, blammo, you've got Persons Unknown (TV), the new summer series now airing on NBC. 'Persons Unknown': Will Janet kill Joe to save her daughter?
Last week, the June 7 premiere of NBC's thriller "Persons Unknown" generated plenty of buzz on Zap2it. One commenter wrote, "Finally, a new kind of show!" It's certainly something we haven't seen before -- an array of strangers waking up in a ghost town with no way out.

The series continues tonight (June 14) as the hostages continue their attempts to escape. At the end of last week's episode, Janet (Daisy Betts) received a fortune cookie that read, "Kill your neighbor and you'll go free." She told the group that it said "May the road rise to meet you."

Could she follow the instructions? Her neighbor is Joe, played by Jason Wiles. When Zap2it spoke with him, he said social hierarchies would develop. "They become suspicious of each other, and alliances form. It's a real f***ing rollercoaster."

In the clip below, Janet comes dangerously close to killing Joe. Also in tonight's episode,...

Salerno’s Essential Insights - “Persons Unknown” – Episode1.01 – Pilot- Recap
The Cube reloaded?

For those who have never seen it “The Cube” and its sequel “Cube 2: Hypercube” are about a group of people who find themselves trapped in a crazed maze of booby trapped rooms with absolutely no memory of how they arrived there. The premise is basically for them to utilize each of their individual skills to their advantage to somehow make it out alive. For those ready to explore the mysteries of “Persons Unknown” these movies make a good primer for what we are likely to see over the next 13 episodes. With that in mind, let the bafflement begin:

TV Review: NBC Mystery Series ‘Persons Unknown’ is Worth Meeting
Chicago – Written by the man who gave the world Keyser Soze in his Oscar-winning script for “The Usual Suspects,” NBC’s “Persons Unknown” is a summer mystery mini-series not unlike last year’s “Harper’s Island” or a mini-“Lost” in that the team behind it want people talking about the questions of the show over summer barbecues. NBC is in such dire straits and the show is just flawed enough that it’s hard to believe that “Persons Unknown” will become a phenomenon but it is likely to be a satisfying cult hit for those who seek it out.

Television Rating: 3.5/5.0

It’s very difficult to judge a mystery series on the basis of one episode, but the set-up for “Persons Unknown” is undeniably intriguing. A small group of seemingly very different people wake up in an old-fashioned hotel. They have no memory of how they got there and...

Television Notes
Here are some television tidbits we think you’ll find interesting:

Fox TV Studios is moving ahead with Persons Unknown, having filled out its cast with Jason Wiles, Daisy Betts, Tina Holmes, Sean O'Bryan as Blackham, Lola Glaudini joining the previously announced Alan Ruck, Chadwick Boseman, Gerald Kyd and Kate Lang Johnson. The pilot will be directed by Michael Rymer (Battlestar Galactica) and the series has a 13 episode order. The series is an unusual co-production with Mexico's Televisa and Italy's Rai which explains why the pilot will be shot in Mexico City starting on Monday. The premise may sound familiar as the cast, virtual strangers to one another, wake up in the middle of nowhere and have to figure out how they got there and why. Speaking of Battlestar, as reported previously, Mary McDonnell makes her Grey's Anatomy debut on the November 13 episode. She’ll be playing a doctor named Virginia Dixon,...

Three riding with 'Talmadge'
NEW YORK -- Gary Cole, Jennifer Coolidge and Agnes Bruckner are starring in writer-director David Moreton's road-trip comedy Say Hello to Stan Talmadge.

Set in 1979 and told in flashback, the film follows the misadventures of the title character (Cole), an estranged ex-husband who tries to reunite his family with a cross-country motor-home trip to a Family Feud-style game show called Beat Your Neighbor.

Coolidge plays his boozing, acid-tongued ex-wife. Bruckner plays his daughter, who is traumatized by the disastrous trip. Tina Holmes (Half Nelson) plays Stan's new wife, who comes along for the ride, and Jordan Bridges (Mona Lisa Smile) plays the game show host.

"Stan hopes that by getting his family on TV, it will make them a real family again," said Moreton, who is producing the project with Rob Aitro and Jenny Hinkey. Aitro describes the screenplay, based on Rick Barrett's unpublished short story Feud, as "a charming indie in the tone of 'Little Miss Sunshine.' "

Moreton's directorial credits include the gay-themed films Edge of Seventeen and Testosterone. Hello is shooting on location in Azusa, Calif.

Ryan Fleck in Mississippi Grind (2015)
Half Nelson
Ryan Fleck in Mississippi Grind (2015)
PARK CITY -- If there was ever any doubt, with "Half Nelson", Ryan Gosling establishes himself as a major talent and one of the finest young actors around. Fortunately, freshman feature director Ryan Fleck and screenwriter Anna Boden have given him a juicy role as a well-intentioned teacher in a black neighborhood whose own life is spinning out of control. A quality indie film in terms of subject matter and execution, the picture should find a receptive audience in specialty venues and later on cable outlets.

An expanded version of Fleck's award-winning Sundance short, "Gowanus, Brooklyn", "Half Nelson" knows the territory and avoids the crusading teacher cliches of lesser films. Besides, Dan Dunne (Gosling) is too screwed up to be a white knight, and in the world he inhabits nothing is black and white.

Dunne is one of those charismatic teachers who has a great rapport and street cred with his students, one in particular, 12-year-old Drey (Shareeka Epps). Drey's life-defining experience to date has been the imprisonment of her brother for dealing. Newcomer Epps keeps pace with Gosling and communicates a soulfulness and wisdom well beyond her years.

Dunne, who teaches history with a Marxist slate and coaches the girls' basketball team, tries to keep Drey out of trouble, but he's hardly one to be giving advice. After a game one night, Drey discovers Dunne stooped over in a bathroom stall with a crack pipe in his hand. Dunne has a major drug problem and is struggling just to stay afloat.

The other major influence in Drey's life -- her single mother is at work most of the time -- is her brother's partner in crime, Frank (Anthony Mackie). A smooth and charming operator, Frank has designs on recruiting Drey for the family business. In a way, Frank and Dunne are fighting for her soul, but because Dunne buys his drugs from Frank's men, he is hardly setting much of an example.

Gosling's triumph is that even as the character sinks deeper in a hole and does some foolish things -- flinging a basketball at a referee over a disputed call, showing up for class so Strung Out he can barely teach -- he is still a sympathetic figure. His intelligent face, covered in a scraggly beard, and graceful gait suggests a person of good will even if he is a bag of contradictions.

The son of socially conscious parents, he became a teacher to help save the world, and now he can't even save himself. Drey is as much his redemption as he is hers. But he fares less well with the other women in his life. His ex-girlfriend Rachel (Tina Holmes), whom he met in rehab and clearly still has a thing for, has cleaned up and is engaged. He also blows it with a lovely fellow teacher (Monique Gabriela Curnen) when he shows up stoned at her house in the middle of the night and forces himself on her.

It's a long way down, and the film probably could benefit from a bit of trimming to keep from getting repetitious, but for the most part the story is riveting, largely because of Gosling and Epps' work and chemistry together. Nice score, sometimes nothing more than a plaintive guitar, by Canadian band Broken Social Scene is a big plus in setting the tone and keeping the story moving.

Other tech credits are first-rate. Cinematographer Andrij Parekh gives the film a gritty, lived-in look without it seeming stagy. And Boden, doubling as editor, makes some beautiful cuts from the crack house to the classroom. But at the end of the day, it's Gosling's performance that elevates the material and makes it memorable.

Keen Insights at the Cutting 'Edge' / Gay coming-of-age tale boasts strong, understated portrayals

NEW YORK -- This low-budget indie takes advantage of two trends -- gay coming-of-age stories ("Beautiful Thing", "Get Real") and 1980s nostalgia. The tale of a sensitive teenager's struggling with his sexuality in 1984 Ohio, "Edge of Seventeen" offers some finely observed moments but is unlikely to break out of its particular niche and appeal much beyond its target audience. The film opens exclusively today at New York's Quad Cinema.

Eric Hunter (Chris Stafford) is a handsome, fresh-faced youth spending his summer slinging burgers at the local amusement park's fast food restaurant. There, he encounters the aptly named Rod (Andersen Gabrych), a strapping blond college boy who quickly makes known his desire for Eric.

Eric returns the feelings even if he doesn't quite understand them, and it isn't long before the pair, in between whipped-cream fights and debates about the comparative merits of Annie Lennox and Madonna, are making out in the storage room.

Eric Best's friend is the cute Maggie (Tina Holmes), who comes to believe that she and Eric are a romantic couple even as he becomes more and more oriented to his gay identity. She overlooks the fact that Eric and Rod are physically affectionate, and that Eric -- donning eye makeup and dyeing his hair orange -- resembles David Bowie in his Ziggy Stardust period. Eric's loving parents are also unaware of his inclinations, although his more attentive mother has suspicions.

The film does an admirable job of delineating Eric's existential dilemma and presenting his tentative forays into his new lifestyle with precise, sexually graphic details. Many aspects of the story are handled with sensitivity and insight, including Maggie's anxiety over her role in Eric's life. Director David Moreton does a fine job re-creating the story's mid-'80s milieu, and the well-chosen musical score includes such characteristic but lesser-known bands of the period as Haircut 100 and Bronski Beat.

The young, attractive cast members deliver sensitive, understated portrayals that go a long way toward providing the film with a sense of realism, while Lea DeLaria -- as Eric's butch, lesbian boss with a heart of gold -- infuses the proceedings with some needed over-the-top comic energy.
