Holland studied animation at the California Institute of the Arts. His student project "Going Nowhere Fast" was exhibited at the Museum of Modern Art.
Along with Bill Kopp, Holland created and a produced the cartoon program Eek! The Cat (1992) for the Fox Kids Network. The original idea for the show came from Holland's experience as a cat owner. One of his cats was named Eek.

Holland earned the childhood nickname Savage after he kicked a kid in the teeth during a soccer game.
Holland began his career animating the "Whammy", the red cartoon creatures on the hit CBS Daytime game show Press Your Luck (1983).
