Stars: Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Ashton Sanders, Melissa Leo, Orson Bean, Bill Pullman, Jonathan Scarfe, Kazy Tauginas, Garrett Golden, Sakina Jaffrey, Tamara Hickey, Karen Strong | Written by Richard Wenk | Directed by Antoine Fuqua
Denzel Washington returns as ultra-violent vigilante Robert McCall in this slick sequel that marks the actor’s fourth collaboration with director Antoine Fuqua. Handsomely made and superbly acted, the film is a stronger outing than its predecessor, smoothing over several of its rough edges.
After a fun prologue on a train to Turkey that has an in-disguise McCall violently rescuing a young girl, the plot switches to Brussels, where a suspicious double murder draws the attention of his former CIA boss Susan (Melissa Leo) and his old colleague Dave (Pedro Pascal). When Susan winds up dead, McCall finds himself targeted by a squad of gun-toting goons and sets out on a trail of bloody revenge.

Good news: cinephiles won’t have to wait long for A24’s mystery sci-fi project. Last week, the tastemaker studio dropped a trailer that featured plenty of haunting imagery, but had zero information about what it actually was. However, eagle-eyed fans have deduced from a still of Sundance short “Toru,” along with pictures of the set, that the short is A24’s project in question. While dreams of a possible Shane Carruth film have been dashed, “Toru” sounds quite intriguing, and A24 has had a good track record with sci-fi in “Ex Machina.”
Directed by Jonathan Minard and Scott Rashap, shot by Dp Matt Mitchell (“The Stakelander”) and featuring a score by Brian McComber (“Krisha”), “Toru” is about how “an infant’s life is transformed by a new technology.” The short is fourteen minutes long and in Japanese with English subtitles, featuring the cast of Ai Kiyono, Yasu Suzuki, Tatsuo Ichikawa,...

This past week a mysterious A24 trailer was released for an untitled project. While many believed it to be a new sci-fi film, now, thanks to The Film Stage, we know what the project really is.
According to the site, the feature is actually a Sundance-bound short film called “Toru.” After a reader spotted a still on Sundance’s website that matched the trailer footage, they did some additional digging and found images and information that corresponded with the project.

Earlier this week, A24 dropped a mysterious teaser trailer for what was thought to be a new science-fiction feature film from the company. With its slick near-future design and life-encompassing text overlays, many thought it may signal the return of Upstream Color and Primer director Shane Carruth, but now we’ve found out what this trailer is previewing. It’s not a feature film at all, and it will meet the eyes and ears of an audience very soon.
One of our eagle-eyed readers spotted that a still from the Sundance-bound short Toru that matches with the teaser. We did our own digging and furthermore, snaps from the set correspond with footage from the trailer. Directed by Jonathan Minard and Scott Rashap, the synopsis for the short reads “an infant’s life is transformed by a new technology,” which certainly matches up with what this preview entails.
