Beyoncé recently turned a lot of heads by releasing Cowboy Carter, a tribute to cowboy culture. Before then, Madonna had a cowboy era of her own. Interestingly, both of these career evolutions have different meanings.
Madonna and Beyoncé are part of a tradition of pop stars going the cowboy route
Cowboy Carter is a tribute to Black cowboys and their sadly ignored role in the Old West and their presence in Western culture today. By releasing the album, Beyoncé is making a turn toward country music, as well as placing herself within a long tradition of pop artists who drew from Americana imagery. For example, before Cowboy Carter, Lil Nas X combined country and trap music with his cowboy-themed megahit “Old Town Road.” He later released a remix of the song featuring 1990s country star Billy Ray Cyrus.
In 2000, Madonna released her last big album: Music. The cover of the...

Elvis Costello shared a lengthy and moving tribute to John Prine that expounded on his great admiration for the late singer-songwriter and featured several memories of the time they spent together — onstage and off.
Costello opened by discussing how Prine’s music sparked a friendship between Costello and the playwright Alan Bleasdale, and used that as a jumping-off point to recall how he discovered Prine’s music in the first place — picking out a 45 rpm single of “Sam Stone” and “Illegal Smile” from the bargain bin at a music store in Liverpool.

Ever since his breakout role in L.A. Over the Rhine hails from Ohio, which is not something that you will ever doubt again after listening to Meet Me at the Edge of the World. What does surprising is that this love letter to rural living comes from a band that took their name from a community which, at the time they were naming their band, was one of the most impoverished urban areas in the country.
Inspired by the purchase of a pre-Civil War cabin in the countryside by Karin Bergquist and husband Linford Detweiler “Meet Me at the Edge of the World” reunites the team behind 2011′s album, “The Long Surrender.” With Joe Henry back in the production chair the music moves like wisps of smoke around the beautiful lyrics. A wall of sound is created where even the faintest background noises sneak in to your mind and bring your senses to focus.

Horror fans don't grant new performers legendary status on a regular basis. We cling to our heroes like treasures and limit inclusion into the upper echelon of the genre to a very select few. But people do manage to break through and win our undying respect and admiration, and Bill Oberst, Jr., is doing just that right now.

Joe Henry’s latest solo set had an open-door policy. Literally. The songwriter and producer kept windows and doors open during the recording process, letting what he called “the racket” lead his backing musicians like T Bone Burnett drummer Jay Bellerose and labelmate Tom Waits’ main axe man Marc Ribot. “It was a deliberate decision to allow those sounds to be heard as music. Songs don’t happen in a vacuum,” Henry told me in an interview this week. “When you’re writing a song, there’s life coming all around you. [Musicians] try to disappear into some hermetically sealed chamber. I resist...

Singer-songwriter Joe Henry’s career trajectory has been chameleonic: He started off rooted in alternative country before flirting with everything from meat-and-potatoes rock ‘n’ roll to tape loop-based trip-hop experimentalism. During the 2000s, however, it seemed he’d finally discovered his true voice, turning out an impressive string of darkly soulful albums which didn’t neatly fit any one genre but evoked many of the same feelings as the rickety, whiskey-soaked jazz-blues of Tom Waits.

Let Them Talk
Hugh Laurie
Produced by Joe Henry Warner Bros. Records
Let us stipulate up front that Hugh Laurie is an insanely talented individual. He’s a comedian, a comic actor, a dramatic actor, a comedy writer, a novelist, plays piano, guitar, and percussion, and, apparently, deep down in his soul, according to the liner notes of Let Them Talk, he’s also an 80-year old, gravelly-voiced Negro ex-sharecropper blues singer.
Sure. Why not?
Most of us think he’s a dyspeptic American medical miracle man (hearing his acceptance speech for his Emmy win as Dr. House, my ex-wife, who knew Hugh Laurie only from House and Stuart Little, asked, “Why is he putting on an English accent?”), so why couldn’t this British born, Oxford and Cambridge educated actor also be Jellyroll Morton?
In Let Them Talk, Hugh Laurie sings the blues, and if he ain’t Jellyroll Morton (and who could be?...

If Dr. Gregory House, M.D. got put to work figuring out what doesn’t quite gel about actor Hugh Laurie’s debut album, "Let Them Talk," he’d run through a checklist trying to get at the core malady. Could it be the musical genre, or choice of backup? No -- the album’s jazzy New Orleans blues could hardly be more delectable in the hands of the great players assembled by producer Joe Henry. Could it be the guest stars? Hardly, when Dr. John, Irma Thomas, and Allen Toussaint all make prominent contributions. How about...

A few weeks ago, Madonna’s manager Guy Oseary took to Twitter to announce that the Queen of Pop was about to hit the studio to begin work on her twelfth studio album – her first since 2008’s Hard Candy. At the time, we had a few suggestions for Madge. We recommended she A.) stay away from “hot” producers like RedOne or Dr. Luke, B.) make some real dance music, and C.) use the ups and downs of the last few years to write about something substantial.
And guess what? She’s taking our advice!
Oseary tweeted that Her Madgesty began work on the untitled album on the Fourth of July. Now the first producer has been named and he’s someone to get excited about: Martin Solveig. Solveig is a French electronic music DJ and producer best known for work with Canadian electropop group Dragonette and the song “Hello,” which...

Madonna has allegedly refused to work with Lady GaGa producer RedOne on tracks for her new album. The 52-year-old pop icon started work on her 12th studio album on Monday, which was confirmed by her long-time manager Guy Oseary on Twitter. However, Madonna has reportedly ruled out collaborating with producer RedOne after her record company suggested that she do so. According to her fan site Queen Madonna, the performer refused to work with established producers, opting for up-and-coming music-makers instead. "Madonna is working on an ambitious project. She has listened to the demo recordings which were submitted to her in the last few years, and some of them have already been completely upset by her," the site claims. "She's the writer of almost all of the new lyrics. Producer Joe Henry is involved in two songs (more)...

A Conversation with Aaron Neville Mike Ragogna: Hi Aaron, thanks for giving us your time today. Let's just dive right into your new album, I Know I've Been Changed. Joe Henry produced it? Aaron Neville: Right. Mr: And you feature Allen Toussaint on piano--Toussaint, of course, being another New Orleans legend. An: Well, not just that, but he's also my first producer, and we had like a fifty year anniversary. He recorded my first record back in '60. Mr: Right. How far back do you go with Allen? An: Well, Allen and I went to school together and we lived not far from each other. Mr: Do you remember which songs you recorded during those original sessions? An: I did a song called "Over You," and I did a split session with a group called The Del-Royals. I did "Over You" and the other side was...

British folk rocker Billy Bragg is to record a new album with country queen Rosanne Cash. Producer Joe Henry brought the "A New England" singer together with Cash at the Ludwigsburger Sclossfestspiele festival he recently oversaw in Germany, and the two singer/songwriters became fast friends.
Now Bragg has asked Henry to produce their first album together. He tells Billboard.com, "We had a great time singing together, and since then we've been plotting on trying to get into the studio together. We're all coming together in November."
"She's (Cash) a great songwriter, particularly the Black Cadillac album she made that dealt with the death of her mother and father and stepmother. It's an incredibly powerful album. And she turned out to be a really whipsmart person and, of course, a great musician."...

"God Willin' & The Creek Don't Rise," Ray Lamontagne's fourth album, is the first to utilize a billed backing band, The Pariah Dogs. It's also the first album the Northeast native has produced on his own. Any singer-songwriter would fall over themselves to snare the talent that 37-year-old Lamontagne's enlisted -- drummer Jay Bellerose (Alison Krauss and Robert Plant, Joe Henry), bassist Jennifer Condos (Bruce Springsteen, Ryan Adams), keyboardist Patrick Warren (Fiona Apple, Red Hot Chili Peppers), guitarist Eric Heywood (Son Volt, The Pretenders) and pedal steel guitarist Greg Leisz (Wilco, Beck). It's a session supergroup of sorts, with the predictable...

According to a release, the 51-year-old Englishman will be working with famed producer and songwriter Joe Henry on a New Orleans blues set. “I am drunk with excitement at this opportunity. • If any actor has a right to sing the blues, it is Hugh Laurie, who hasn't had any luck with the Emmys despite four previous nominations for playing the cantankerous title character in "House, M.D." Although he's contending again this year in the lead actor race, our early predictions rank him as an also-ran again. On Monday, Warner Music announced a record deal with the erudite Englishman for an album of New Orleans-style songs. The disc will be produced by two-time Grammy champ Joe Henry. In a statement, Laurie said, "I am drunk with excitement at this opportunity. I know the history of actors making music is a checkered one, but I promise no...

Henry’s new album is average Joe
Joe Henry turned out to be one of the most daring stylists to emerge from the alt.country camp, abandoning the folksy rock of his early albums to venture into darker, wilder territory on 1996’s Trampoline. His work since has imagined and re-imagined the crossroads of disparate American musical traditions, finding the exact point where smoky torch songs, rambunctious free jazz, moody art rock, and mournful Dixieland funeral marches all make sense together. Blood From Stars is ostensibly his blues excursion: “Bellwether” and “The Man I Keep Hid” mimic the structure and repetition of the genre, but only as a jumping-off point for Henry’s hazy hybrid sounds. This is a classy, well-crafted record, but it hits the same marks as Tiny Voices and Civilians, conjuring the same midnight moods and the same smoky ambience. “Suit on a Frame,” bustling with boisterous percussion,...
