It's a tale as old as time — or at least as old as Hollywood. An actor gets cast in a role that comes to define, even haunt, them as they traverse the perilous landscape of the movie business. They scavenge for roles that due to their unfortunate type-casting continue to elude them until they just give up and become like a vet or get a Masters in Business Admin or something.
Happily, being type-cast doesn't always end careers. Robert Pattinson, for example, after gaining worldwide notoriety as the sparkly vampire, has been on a mission to prove his worth as a diverse talent in recent years, playing against type and impressing everyone in the process. But before him, a little actor by the name of Sean Connery walked so that Pattinson could run.
Believe it or not, Connery had quite an illustrious and prolific career beyond being Bond and Indiana Jones' dad.

The Peacock limited series Dr. Death stars Christian Slater as Randy Kirby, one of the doctors who exposed Dr. Christopher Duntsch (Joshua Jackson)’s malpractice. Series creator Patrick McManus said the real Dr. Kirby was very sure of the story’s merits for television.
“I will tell you that my very first phone call, it was a very long conversation,” McManus said on a Contenders TV panel on Sunday at the Paramount Theatre. “He talked a lot. The last thing he said, it was Thanksgiving day, the last thing he said was, ‘Stick with Randy Kirby and I’m going to win you an Emmy.’”

(Warning: This post, which was originally published July 15, contains mild spoilers for Peacock’s “Dr. Death.”)
As its title strongly suggests, “Dr. Death” isn’t a show about a good physician. And the Peacock limited series — which is based on Wondery’s hit podcast about the real-life Dallas neurosurgeon Dr. Christopher Duntsch (played by Joshua Jackson) — goes to great pains to depict just how terrible an operator this man was, with many graphic scenes showcasing the spinal surgeries that left many of his patients permanently maimed or dead.
There are surgical tools used in ways that are clearly improper to even those of us watching who have no medical training. There are cracking and crunching noises that will set viewers’ teeth on edge as they wonder if that’s a sound a bone should ever make. And there are an uncomfortable number of times that Duntsch’s surgical team looks...

In Peacock’s limited series “Dr. Death,” the existence and significance of the email Dr. Christopher Duntsch (portrayed by Joshua Jackson) sends to his nurse and lover Kim Morgan (Grace Gummer) the night before he performs an ill-fated spinal surgery on his friend Jerry Summers (Dominic Burgess) is revealed much earlier than the letter’s actual contents.
Due to the twisty nature of the based-on-true-events show’s dual timelines detailing Duntsch’s horrifying missteps as a neurosurgeon and his subsequent trial for the crimes against his patients, viewers get even more teases about how vital the email, which has the subject line “Occam’s Razor,” is going to be for putting Duntsch behind bars before we have enough evidence to understand why.

The villain of “Dr. Death,” Joshua Jackson’s Dr. Christopher Duntsch, is in the spotlight for the better part of the based-on-true-events Peacock limited series, maiming and killing patients who go under his knife for routine spinal surgeries. And it’s because we spend so much time in the dark with Duntsch that when our heroine, Dallas assistant district attorney Michelle Shughart (played by AnnaSophia Robb), finally arrives more than halfway through the show, her ultimate courtroom victory against the neurosurgeon feels that much sweeter.
For viewers who have watched through the end of “Dr. Death” and are looking to dive a little deeper into the facts of the case it’s based on, Robb assured TheWrap of one point in particular: Shughart really does have that cheery disposition in court.

Dr. Christopher Duntsch (portrayed by Joshua Jackson on the scripted show) was an infamous neurosurgeon who was sentenced to life imprisonment after maiming, harming or killing 33 patients who came in for complex but routine spinal surgeries in the Dallas, Texas, area in the early 2010s.

Joshua Jackson started his career playing some of the sweetest and therefore most beloved characters in pop culture, from Charlie Conway in “The Mighty Ducks” to Pacey Witter on “Dawson’s Creek.” Even as he matured into more adult roles, such as Peter Bishop on “Fringe,” he leaned on likable, even when they became increasingly complex characters. That’s why his work in Peacock’s “Dr. Death” is so notable.
Jackson stars as Christopher Duntsch, the titular nicknamed neurosurgeon, in Peacock’s limited series based on the Wondery podcast of the same name (and of course the real-life former doctor’s story). It is a role he stepped into amid the Covid-19 pandemic when Jamie Dornan vacated the project, and it is one that required nuanced acting. London, June 9 (Ians) People more concerned about catching Covid-19 were more disapproving of the wrong-doings of others, whatever they were doing wrong, according to a study on how we make moral judgements.
The findings are evidence that our morality is shaped by various emotions and intuitions, of which concerns about health and safety are prominent. This means that our judgements of wrongdoing are not completely rational, said researchers from the University of Cambridge in the UK.
The study, published in the journal Evolutionary Psychology, did not focus on behaviours relating to the pandemic itself -- such as social distancing -- but considered a wide range of moral transgressions.
Between March and May 2020, over 900 study participants in the US were presented with a series of scenarios -- on harm, fairness, in-group loyalty, deference to authority, and purity -- and asked to rate them on a scale from 'not at all wrong' to 'extremely wrong'.

The first trailer for Peacock’s “Dr. Death” is here, featuring Joshua Jackson as “either the most incompetent surgeon… or a sociopath.”
The limited series is based on Wondery’s hit podcast of the same name and tells the terrifying true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch, a charismatic Dallas surgeon with a flourishing neurosurgery practice — and a growing list of patients who come in for routine spinal surgeries and leave permanently maimed or dead.
As the bodies under Duntsch’s care pile up, fellow surgeons Robert Henderson (Alec Baldwin) and Randall Kirby (Christian Slater), as well as Dallas prosecutor Michelle Shughart (AnnaSophia Robb), set out to stop him. According to the series logline, “‘Dr. Death’ explores the twisted mind of Dr. Duntsch and the failures of the system designed to protect the most defenseless among us.”
“Duntsch is never going to stop on his own,” Baldwin’s Henderson says at one point in the trailer.

Starzplay has picked up a bunch of international rights for Peacock’s true-crime limited series Dr. Death, starring Joshua Jackson, Alec Baldwin, and Christian Slater.
The Lionsgate-backed international streamer will carry the UCP-produced series, based on the hit Wondery podcast of the same name, in the UK, Belgium, France, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, and throughout Latin America, including Brazil and Mexico.
Written by Patrick Macmanus, who serves as showrunner, Dr. Death is based on the terrifying true story of Dr. Christopher Duntsch (Jackson), a rising star in the Dallas medical community. Young, charismatic and ostensibly brilliant, Duntsch was building a flourishing neurosurgery practice when everything suddenly changed.
Patients entered his operating room for complex but routine spinal surgeries and left permanently maimed or dead. As victims piled up, two fellow physicians — neurosurgeon Robert Henderson (Baldwin) and vascular surgeon Randall Kirby (Slater) — set out to stop him. Dr. Death...

The medical career of neurosurgeon Christopher Duntsch is the stuff of horror stories, except it's very much real. After Duntsch operated on them, two patients died, and over 30 dealt with serious complications. For the longest time, Duntsch hopped from hospital to hospital without any real ramifications. The physician is the topic of Wondery's 2018 podcast Dr. Death, which is now getting the on-screen treatment on Peacock with a limited series that stars Joshua Jackson in the foreboding titular role. But even without media dramatization, the story of Christopher Duntsch is a wholly terrifying one.
Beginning work as a neurosurgeon in 2011, Duntsch appeared to be a trustworthy doctor, welcomed to the Minimally Invasive Spine Institute in Plano with a cushy $600,000 advance. He earned an M.D. and Ph.D. from the University of Tennesse Health Science Center in Memphis. He ran two labs and raised millions in grant funding. But his performance...

Joshua Jackson is moving from streaming show to another.
The beloved actor, who most recently starred on Little Fires Everywhere, has landed the lead role in the upcoming Peacock drama series, Dr. Death.
He replaces Jamie Dornan, who was initially set to topline the series.
As is becoming the norm due to Covid-19 actors are having to pull out of projects due to scheduling conflicts, so Dornan's exit is hardly surprising.
Filming was initially set to get underway earlier this year, but because of the shutdowns brought on by the virus, it will now shoot later in the fall.
Additionally, TV Line is reporting that This Is Us star Chris Sullivan, who was set to co-star on the series, has been forced to drop out.
Sullivan's exit is likely due to him filming the series between seasons of This Is Us, which only kicked off production on its fifth season a few weeks ago.

Joshua Jackson has been tapped for the title role in Peacock’s Dr. Death. He will star opposite Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater in the Ucp-produced limited series based on the hit Wondery podcast of the same name.
Jackson replaces Jamie Dornan, who was cast in the role in August 2019. Due to Dr. Death‘s production start delay relating to the coronavirus pandemic, Dornan’s schedule no longer allows him to do the series, leading to his departure. For the same reason, Stephen Frears recently exited as director of the first two episodes. He was replaced by Maggie Kiley, who leads an all-female directing team on the show.
Production on Dr. Death begins this fall.

NBCUniversal revealed a lot of details regarding their new streaming service, which is called Peacock, which is obviously a nod to NBC’s iconic logo.
The company also unveiled its initial programming slate. We already reported on the reboot of Battlestar Galactica from Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail, as well as Saved By the Bell with Mario Lopez, Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Elizabeth Berkley set to star; and Punky Brewster, with Soleil Moon Frye set to reprise her role as the title character.
There are a lot of other original shows coming to Peacock, though, along with catalogue series and library films. There will also be original films that will be created by Universal Pictures, Focus Features, and DreamWorks Animation.
Peacock will launch in April of 2020. It will be both advertising and subscription supported streaming service. Details on pricing and distribution will be announced as it gets closer to launch.

“First do no harm.” Jamie Dornan, Alec Baldwin and Christian Slater are set to star in Dr. Death, a limited drama series from UCP based on the Wondery podcast about a sinister doctor who treats his Hippocratic Oath about the same way he treats his patients.
With the high-caliber talent on board, UCP is shopping the project to networks and streaming platforms. The studio took the same approach with two other series based on podcasts, Homecoming, which was sold to Amazon with Julia Roberts attached, and Dirty John, which landed at Bravo with Connie Britton in negotiations to star. Both those projects scored two-season pickups.
