Despite getting into cinema due to horror films, I have found myself falling out of love with the genre quite recently. I think the main reason is, for most part, the horror film has become far too post-modern and self-referential. From Scream to Hostel to the recent glut of Platinum Dune retreads. Almost everything thing I was managing to check out was a nudge or a wink to something done.
If they’re not paying homage to a specific era, then it was nodding in its general direction. Of course there are exceptions to the rule. However, there was enough to put me off for a while. For some reason however I felt it would be a great idea to snap the assignment for Finale, a low budget horror film which pays homage to the giallo cycle and Clive Barker. Sucker for punishment, I know.
Finale left me frustrated for more than a couple reasons.

Grimmupnorth 2010 is coming to Manchester for a second time this Halloween! Readers may remember last year’s coverage from the first Grimmfest last October ‘09. Well, we’re going back for more this year too. Festival director Simeon Halligan and his crew have spent all year finding some amazing new titles to screen at Manchester’s biggest horror film festival, including Evil: In The Time Of Heroes, which I missed at Eiff so am well up for seeing. There’s also the inventively named Canadian shocker, Dead Hooker In A Trunk, the Japanese genre mash-up Alien Vs Ninja, Thai thriller Slice, Zombie mock-u-mentary Reel Zombies and a horror doc featuring all kinds of industry insiders, The Splat Pack. There’s also a ton of activities and seminars for festival goers to participate in too. Personally I’m looking forward to the special screening for my favourite Argento film, Deep Red.

Image Entertainment will release Finale from director John Michael Elfers on DVD May 25th and the film is somewhat of a throwback to Italian Giallo. The trailer shows ritualistic sacrifice and worship and might be for those a little less squeamish. However, if you like independent horror then this might be one to add to your Netflix queue.
The synopsis for Finale here:
"Death is stalking a small town plagued with a rash of apparent suicides. But one grieving mother believes that there are darker forces at work and plunges herself into a supernatural nightmare to uncover her dead son’s association with an evil cult. Her behavior grows increasingly paranoid and bizarre as she races against time to battle the terrifying demon unleashed to destroy her entire family in this atmospheric descent into horror" (Image).
Release Date: May 25th (DVD).

Finale is director John Michael Elfer's feature debut and the film is an homage to Dario Argento's Suspiria (Shock). The film has recently been picked up by Image Entertainment, last week, and the film will be released May 25 on DVD. Finale is oriented toward the supernatural realm and this flick involves everything from suicide to hauntings in a cemetery. Also, the film was shot in a month and a half with an eight man crew, with next to no-budget. The synopsis and homepage below. Plus, a run down of the film from the director is inside.
