Local public broadcaster Kcet was once again the major winner at this year’s Los Angeles Area Emmys, and then, when combined with its sister station Koce (“PBS SoCal”), the two outlets further dominated the awards. Kcet won eight Emmys this year, the most of any station, followed by Univision’s Kmex-tv, which won five. Telemundo’s Kvea won four, and then there was Koce, with three.
That means the combined Kcet/Koce won eight Emmys overall, easily leading all other stations and duopolies.
Kcet’s wins included L.A. Local Color, for “Transformation (Broken Bread),” as well as entertainment, for “Jazz City (SoCal Connected).” Other big winners included Knbc, for daytime newscast (11 a.m. to 7 p.m.) and Kabc, for evening newscast (7 p.m. to midnight). Kmex and Kvea tied for morning news (4 a.m. to 11 a.m.).

Update: The CBS Broadcast Center in New York is slowly coming back to life even after a fourth worker tested positive for coronavirus on Friday. The drama has been playing out since Wednesday, when two employees at CBS Network News showed symptoms and tested positive. The whole building was disinfected and they’re trying to get it working as best they can. The busy production hub impacts numerous shows, including CBS Evening News, 60 Minutes, CBS Sunday Morning, Inside Edition and the local New York Evening broadcasts. Give the network credit for being changeable in crisis: the network news and CBS This Morning was quarterbacked from DC, while Deborah Norville hosted Inside Edition from her kitchen. The situation is fluid but the hope was to slowly integrate production back in the broadcast center this weekend, taking every precaution possible and getting everyone out when they’ve completed the newscasts. Chicago – “No one talks like that,” I kept thinking to myself about this noir thriller. But that said, “Nightcrawler” is driven by just about the most entertaining dialogue from one person I’ve seen all year.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
Despite the fact that he’s living in a warped alternate version of the reality you and I know, you can’t stop listening to the way a narcissistic, zombie-like Jake Gyllenhaal puts people in their place. You know immediately that this typically 180-pound man – who shed 20 pounds to become the gaunt Lou Bloom and is hungry both literally and figuratively – is more than an odd bird. He clearly exhibits sociopathic behavior and that side of him is certainly disturbing, but there’s another side I actually find refreshing.
He doesn’t sugar coat because he doesn’t know how to. He speaks so decisively and matter-of-factly. His words are the epitome of being blunt,...

Jake Gyllenhaal and Rene Russo star in ‘Nightcrawler,’ about an unscrupulous videographer trolling the streets of Los Angeles for bloody crime-scene footage he can sell to a local TV news operation. It also stars Bill Paxton, James Huang and a raft of current and former Los Angeles TV news anchors and reporters, including Kent Shocknek, Pat Harvey and Sharon Tay.
Watch my video review above for more about the film, but know that I think it features Gyllenhaal’s best performance maybe ever, and a fine one by Russo as well.
The film is written and directed by Dan Gilroy, and produced by Gyllenhaal, Tony Gilroy, Jennifer Fox, David Lancaster and Michael Litvak. Open Road Films is handling distribution in the U.S. Yes, the project is a family affair, featuring work by brothers Dan, Tony (The Bourne Legacy, Michael Clayton) and editor John (Pacific Rim, Warrior) Gilroy.

L.A.-based duopoly Kcbs-tv and Kcal-tv have shuffled the news anchors for their weeknight newscasts.
Pat Harvey, a 20-year Kcal veteran who was one of the original anchors of the station's primetime news, is switching to Kcbs to co-anchor the 5 and 11 p.m. newscasts with Paul Magers, who has held that role since 2004 with Laura Diaz.
Diaz, meanwhile, is getting bumped to Kcbs' 6 p.m. newscast as that program's sole anchor. Diaz will also take on the extra responsibility of hosting and playing a role in the creation of a series of local news and public affairs specials.
Kcal weathercaster Jackie Johnson will succeed Johnny Mountain as Kcbs weeknight weathercaster. Mountain, a five-year Kcbs veteran whose career spans 32 years on Los Angeles television, announced his retirement last month. Josh Rubenstein, the weekday meteorologist for Kcbs and Kcal, will provide Kcal's weeknight weather reports until a successor for Johnson is named.
