The eighth annual Critics Choice Documentary Awards nominations are often an early bellwether for the Best Documentary Feature Oscar race, mainly because they signal to Oscar voters many of the key films they should not miss. Last year’s winner, “Good Night Oppy,” did not make it to the documentary Oscar shortlist, but the year before, “Summer of Soul” went on to win the Oscar.
This year’s nominations were led by fall festival favorite “American Symphony,” Matthew Heineman’s moving portrait of musician Jon Batiste as he juggles work demands and his wife’s recurring leukemia, with six nods. It was followed by Mstyslav Chernov’s Ukraine international Oscar submission “20 Days in Mariupol,” D. Smith’s black-and-white portrait of Black trans sex workers “Kokomo City,” and Davis Guggenheim’s editing feat “Still: A Michael J. Fox Movie,” with five each.

New Delhi, Oct 27 (Ians) India's oldest living Test cricketer, Dattajirao Krishnarao Gaekwad, turned 92 on Tuesday and, even at this age, he recalled his entire career with pin-point accuracy -- from his alma mater Maharani Chimnabai High School in Baroda to winning the Ranji Trophy in his first year as Baroda captain in 1957-58 to representing India.
The postal department paid a fine tribute to Gaekwad as it issued a 'Special Cover' in his honour on Thursday. Titled "Dedicated to Shri Dk Gaekwad", it bore the former India captain's photo printed in the centre, along with that of other stalwarts of Baroda cricket.
Also on Tuesday morning, Gaekwad's son and former India Test batsman Anshuman and his family members, who live elsewhere in Baroda, visited him. Gaekwad senior said they were to come again in the evening for a family get together when a celebration would take...

Australian filmmaker Neil Harvey compiled a haunting eight-minute space short using 10 hours of film from the Nasa archives during his spare time. Robbie tells the story of a robot that became self-aware after his Cpu was refurbished for a North American Space Administration program that enabled the android to do manual tasks. He narrates the short, explaining how he came to be born in 2011 and gives us a snapshot of his life. In 2037 he was sent to space, but in 2045 something "drastic" happened. He lost contact with Earth and ended up floating in the atmosphere for 6,000 years. The only thing keeping him occupied was a fantasy life he concocted for himself, but the loneliness and isolation overtakes him. "I put these selected shots on an editing timeline and...

An Australian filmmaker by the name of Neil Harvey sent us a wonderful eerie sci-fi short film he created called Robbie, and he used a lot of footage from Nasa to create it. The story is set 6000 years in the future, and it charts the existential reflections of an aging robot drifting alone through space on the last of his battery life. It actually ended up being a really interesting short.
Here's a note from the filmmaker:
The film-making process involved downloading about 10 hours of footage from the Nasa archives and compiling a list of shots which resonated with me at some level. I did this over about 2 or 3 months when I had the spare time. From there, I put these selected shots on an editing timeline and watched them back until characters and narratives began developing in my mind. That is when i met Robbie.

"My name is Robbie. I am from a planet called Earth. It is part of a 4 billion year old solar system." We always love getting tipped to see some fascinating filmmaking, especially if it's sci-fi. A reader named Ronny told me to check out this short called Robbie on Vimeo, created by Australian director Neil Harvey. The video is a short created by Harvey as an anniversary present for his girlfriend a few months ago. It was made entirely with pre-existing Nasa footage that Harvey downloaded from their archives, even though it's set 6000 years the future. He creates a tragic, intriguing narrative with voiceover that's mesmerizing to watch. "Robbie charts the existential reflections of an aging robot drifting alone through space on the last of his battery life." Harvey explains his process of creating this film on the Vimeo page: "The film-making process involved downloading about 10 hours of ...

Why Watch? See what happens when a filmmaker edits down 10 hours of Nasa footage into 8 minutes colored by a touching voice over from a sentient robot named Robbie who is dying. Tears are natural. Neil Harvey has made something unique and haunting that captures the heart. Hat tip to Ben L. and Short of the Week for sending it in. What will it cost? Only 8 minutes. Skip Work.
