The Herb Alpert Foundation has announced the winners of its 30th annual Herb Alpert Award in the Arts, which recognizes mid-career artists in the fields of dance, music, film/video, theater and visual arts.
In all, there are 10 winners for 2024, each of whom will receive a $75,000 unrestricted prize as well as a residency at CalArts (which administers the prize on behalf of the Herb Alpert Foundation). The winners are chosen by a group of 15 distinguished panelists and are nominated by another group of respected names in the arts.
According to Irene Borger, the director of the Herb Alpert Awards in the Arts, what stands out among 2024’s cohort is how many winners work across genres and mediums.
“Over the years things have gotten more and more hybrid, so that even though there are these five categories, these five genres, one of the choreographers is coming out with a book, one of the filmmakers makes sculpture,...

Just one year ahead of its 30th anniversary, the Herb Alpert Award in the Arts has announced 11 winners — the most ever — of its annual prizes which recognize and fund risk-taking mid-career artists in the fields of dance, music, film/video, theater and visual arts.
The 2023 Herb Alpert Award in the Arts winners — each of whom receive $75,000 in unrestricted funding (with one duo sharing the payment) — include filmmakers Madeleine Hunt-Ehrlich and Christopher Harris.
“I believe in the arts. I think the arts are the heart and soul of our country. Not just music. We’re talking about actors and poets and painters and sculptors — the whole gamut. We need the artists, especially in these times. They are creating through their passion and those people need to be supported and helped and nurtured. It’s a dire need out there. A lot of people are struggling. We’re just trying to do our part,...

The deal was negotiated by Wned PBS and the film’s distributor Brainstorm Media.

The three-time Grammy winner has made 35 albums, including Timeless, produced by will.i.am. Hit singles include “Mas Que Nada”, “The Look of Love”, “Scarborough Fair”, “Night and Day”, “Never Gonna Let You Go” and his famous rendition of “Fool on the...

You see this guy? You may remember his trumpet but probably not his voice, although he did sing on one of his two number 1 hits. Herb Alpert led the Tijuana Brass, a band of crack session players, through the incidental music of the 1960s. He is the A in A&m Records. The upcoming documentary Herb Alpert Is… will chronicle Alpert’s 60-year career as bandleader, producer, label executive, musician, philanthropist, and visual artist. It will have its live streaming premiere screening on Oct. 1. It will hit theaters and VOD on Oct. 2, 2020, the same day as a Herb Alpert Is… 68-track box set.
Herb Alpert Is… was directed by John Scheinfeld, who made Chasing Trane: The John Coltrane Documentary, and The U.S. vs. John Lennon. The documentary is “a passionate and inspiring exploration of Alpert’s personal and creative journey that reveals the critical events, experiences and challenges that have...

“You see your whole life flash in front of you in an hour and some minutes, and then it’s like, wow, did all that really happen? Because I always felt I’m in somewhat of a dream to begin with,” says Herb Alpert, subject of a new documentary about his life from director John Scheinfeld. It’s a dream that now has a release date: “Herb Alpert Is…” is hitting theaters and VOD on Oct. 1.
The doc will be the rare movie with a three-cd soundtrack, of sorts. It’s being announced today that Oct. 2 will see the release of a box set commemorating Alpert’s career, also titled “Herb Alpert Is…” The collection is not officially a soundtrack, as only a portion of its 63 tracks appear in the movie, but it fills a larger need as the first large-scale set celebrating the entirety of the legendary trumpeter’s nearly six-decade catalog.

Bandleader Sérgio Mendes, the godfather of bossa nova, was Brazil’s most celebrated artist in the Sixties. His most popular recording, “Mas Que Nada,” was originally penned and performed by singer-guitarist Jorge Ben, a former member of Mendes’ band. According to Ruy Castro’s 1990 book Bossa Nova: The Story of the Brazilian Music That Seduced the World, Ben went out for a haircut before a show in Los Angeles and, under America’s pervasive Jim Crow laws, the Afro-Brazilian was turned away. It was then that Ben allegedly dropped off...

Every thrift store I’ve ever been in has one.
You can see the cover of Whipped Cream and Other Delights‘ bright green background even deep in a stack. The real attraction, to a teenaged crate diver, is Dolores Erickson, covered in “whipped cream” (actually shaving cream), staring alluringly into the camera.
Herb Alpert‘s music, in the wild, is similarly inescapable: I have no statistics to back this up, but I would wager that roughly 99 percent of the world’s population has, at some point, heard “Spanish Flea,” if not directly, than through some kind of cultural osmosis. But...

Here are the songs that were considered forJames Bond themes but ultimately rejected. Some of them aren't half-bad, too...
Bond title songs are an intrinsic part of the series. But did you know that there were often unused tracks that were considered but rejected? Some of them are damn good too. This is bound to lead to comparisons and what if… discussions, and that's what we are here to encourage today.
As soon as we try to define what makes a great Bond song, we run into the problem that dogs any criticism of the series – every aspect of it is extremely divisive. Whatever element you nominate as a high point, best actor, score or film, for example, is someone else's least favourite and vice versa. The same goes for the Bond theme songs: some people like a bouncy pop song with a nice brass arrangement. For others,...

So You Think You Can Dance‘s Season 10 live voting rounds got off to a jaw-dropping start on Tuesday, with a NappyTabs routine set to Herb Alpert and Lani Hall’s “Puttin on the Ritz” that featured all Top 20 dancers plus a number of the show’s resident choreographers.
And if that weren’t enough, Nigel Lythgoe donned a hoodie and got his animation on, Mary Murphy unleashed a ballroom blitz, and Alpert and Hall even made a cameo of their own. There was something for everyone — and seemingly all in one seamless take! Whew!

That is certainly a bold claim, but the opening number from Tuesday’s Top 20 performance show (full recap here) was such a treat. I still can’t type the moniker “Nappytabs” (or walk by Tabitha and Napoleon’s urban dancewear store in North Hollywood) without feeling weird about it, but anyway, the duo choreographed a superbly shot (in seemingly one take! …but not) behind-the-scenes routine, set to the perfect snazzy song — “Puttin’ on the Ritz” by Herb Alpert feat. Lani Hall. The judges, Sytycd All-Stars, and some choreographers make cameos.
It has a very Xanadu/”All Over the World”-esque vibe,...

Whenever a new James Bond movie hits theaters, it’s an opportunity to bring up one of the greatest questions in the history of popular cinema: Which film about the dapper British superspy is the very best film. Which leads to a natural follow-up question: Which one is the worst? I grew up in a solidly pro-Connery household, and my personal favorite is the film that initially ended Connery’s run with the character: You Only Live Twice. After starting off with one of the series’ best openings (Bond gets killed!) and my personal favorite Bond theme song (sung by...

Herb Alpert is, simply put, a music legend. He got his start writing hits like Sam Cooke's "Wonderful World" before founding A & M Records with Jerry Moss in the early '60s. By the time they sold it a quarter-century later, it was one of the most successful record labels in the world. As a producer, trumpeter and occasional singer, he had a phenomenal string of hit singles and albums with the Tijuana Brass in the 1960s -- in 1966 Alpert and the Tjb outsold the Beatles in the U.S. -- and continued recording regularly into the '90s. Lani Hall is a star in her own right, having sung on smashes for Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 like "Mais Que Nada," "The Fool On The Hill" and "Scarborough Fair." She married Herb Alpert in 1974 and embarked...
