Pop rock, adult contemporary and blue-eyed soul legend Daryl Hall will throw a fit if you ever call his music “yacht rock” — as if he could ever be that smooth.
In 2005, J.D. Ryznar, Hunter D. Stair and Lane Farnham debuted the first episode of their mockumentary video series Yacht Rock at Dan Harmon and Rob Schrab’s short-film festival Channel 101, unaware that they were about to recontextualize a decades-old movement in popular music forever. Yacht Rock told the comedically dramatized stories behind the biggest artists and smoothest hits of the “West Coast sound” era, as it was previously known, back when kings like Kenny Loggins and Michael McDonald blended soft rock, R&b, soul, jazz and about a half-dozen other genres into a new form of relaxing music.
As the series title suggests, Ryznar, Stair, Farnham and their collaborators dubbed this sailor-friendly sound “Yacht Rock.”

Daryl Hall doesn’t know how he got involved in the yacht-rock conversation, but he wants out. In a recent interview on Broken Record, the podcast produced by Rick Rubin and hosted by Justin Richmond, the musician slammed the genre’s entire premise and distanced himself from any association with it.
“This is something I don’t understand,” Hall said. “First of all, yacht rock was a fucking joke by two jerk-offs in California, and suddenly it became a genre. I don’t even understand it. I never understood it.

Don’t get Daryl Hall started on yacht rock.
During a recent appearance on the Broken Record podcast, Hall expressed agitation that Hall and Oates’ music keeps getting lumped in with the term “yacht rock.” “This is something I don’t understand. First of all, yacht rock was a fucking joke by two jerk offs in California and suddenly it became a genre,” Hall lamented. The “two jerk offs” likely refers to J. D. Ryznar, Hunter D. Stair, and Lane Farnham, who created the 2005 web series Yacht Rock and have since been credited with coining the term. “I don’t even understand it. I never understood it.”

He continued, genuinely irritated by the term’s persistence in popular music culture despite it being just an amalgam of other genres. “It’s just R&b with maybe some jazz in there,” he said. “It’s mellow R&b.

For more than a decade, heritage rock artists have been juicing their live shows by recreating their vintage albums start to finish. That list includes Neil Young (Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere), Bruce Springsteen (The River), U2 (The Joshua Tree), Sonic Youth (Daydream Nation), and Steely Dan (every one of their records). This fall, Patti Smith joints the list when she’ll be playing all of Horses to mark its 50th anniversary. An entire Canadian company, Classic Albums Live, is devoted to this trend, with a group of largely unknown musicians covering all of Rumours,...

One of the oddest things about the original Happy Gilmore is the fact that Ben Stiller’s villainous nursing home attendant, Hal L., faces zero repercussions for his crimes. We all cheered when a smarmy pro golfer was chased down and pulverized by a small army of violent fans, yet the guy who ran a literal sweatshop full of seniors was just allowed to continue his campaign of elder abuse?
As many fans are aware, the movie very nearly included a moment in which Happy informs Hal that his grandmother blew the whistle on his scam. In the deleted scene, Hal then tries to claim that Grandma Gilmore can’t be believed because she’s “in the advanced stages of senility.” Happy responds by throwing Hal L. out the window.
Why would the movie exclude such an important scene, which resolves a key plot point? Well, apparently the blame should be placed squarely on us,...

Happy Gilmore star Adam Sandler could be all set for Oscar glory with his new movie. Sadly, no, it’s not Happy Gilmore 2. The beloved actor and comedian will reunite with Netflix once again for an upcoming coming-of-age comedy-drama, with a source who's seen the movie revealing that, not only will the streamer campaign hard for Sandler to be considered by the Academy, but that could even win a coveted golden statue.
Titled Jay Kelly, the movie is being helmed by Academy Award nominee and Marriage Story director Noah Baumbach, and could be described as a coming-of-middle-age comedy as it follows friends, played by Sandler and George Clooney, who rediscover their youthful spirit during a chaotic reunion.
Now, buzz from an early screening (via World of Reel) has emerged, with “industry sources, journalists, and test reports” stating that Sandler steals the show in Jay Kelly, with the Billy Madison star delivering a career-best performance.

We have seen the next winner of American Idol — we just don't know who it is yet.
Season 23 of ABC singing competition wrapped up the audition phase on Sunday night as judges Carrie Underwood, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan traveled to New York, Los Angeles, and Nashville to find music's next superstar. The two-hour episode aired Sunday, March 30 (8 p.m. Et/Pt) with Ryan Seacrest hosting.
Brooklyn native JMarie was the first contestant to "slay" with her saucy rendition of Carrie's own "Before He Cheats," breathing new life into what she called a "hood anthem." The Haitian-born soul singer had Idol's newest judge smiling ear-to-ear as she riffed around the country original. "I was a little worried that people would sing my songs to me," Carrie said. "But you made it your own. I forgot about myself ever having sung that song. It was like I had heard it for the first time.

It’s been almost 30 years since Happy Gilmore’s unforgettable antics at the Tour Championship in 1996, including doing the bull dance, fighting with Bob Barker and sinking a seemingly impossible putt, thanks to his instructor Chubbs. Netflix has officially unveiled the first trailer for Happy Gilmore 2, which also comes with the news that the Adam Sandler-led legacy sequel will be released on July 25. For the first time in nearly 30 years, Sandler will return as the golfing hockey player who took the world by storm in 1996, and he’s not the only one back in the saddle for another ride. Ben Stiller will also reprise his iconic role as Hal L. and he even makes an appearance in the newly-released teaser trailer, along with original star Julie Bowen as Virginia Venit. It also wouldn’t be a Happy Gilmore movie without Shooter McGavin, and you can bet your gold jacket that Christopher McDonald is back to give Sandler a hard time in Happy Gilmore 2.

Adam Sandler is one of his generation's most iconic comedy actors. His early works, Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, The Waterboy, The Wedding Singer, etc., are among the most well-known and acclaimed. While later movies have seen a more "mixed" critical reception, Sandler has no doubt made his mark. But what if there was a secret Easter egg in several of his movies? And what if that Easter egg was hidden in plain sight?
In several Sandman pictures, his female love interest has the initials "Vv." There's Veronica Vaughn, Virginia Venit, Vicki Vallencourt, and more. But not every onscreen partner has these initials, so what's the story with the ones that do? Have we stumbled down some new conspiracy theory rabbit hole? Is "Vv" a secret sign warning of what's to come? Or is it just Sandler being Sandler and making up funny names? In all likelihood, the latter is the case.

It hasn't been 30 years since we saw the original Happy Gilmore released, but it's been close. That film starring Adam Sandler as Happy was released on February 16, 1996. Little did we know at the time that Sandler was just beginning his ascent to being one of the more famous people making funny films.
Somehow, Sandler and the rest of the cast, which featured a number of cameos, made the movie iconic. Maybe it was Sandler's ridiculous swing, which many people have tried to replicate. It was the kind of swing a former hockey player-turned-golfer might do, which is exactly what Sandler's character was.
There has long been discussion of a sequel, and for seemingly just as long, the project has been in the works as part of Sandler's massive Netflix deal. The good news is that Happy Gilmore 2 is ready for release, and Netflix viewers and Happy fans found out...

Last year, John Oates said in an interview that he had “moved on” from Hall & Oates. Now, Daryl Hall has confirmed in a sitdown with The Times that the feeling is mutual.
While addressing the lawsuit he filed against Oates last year, Hall intimated that they’ll never play together again. “That ship has gone to the bottom of the ocean,” he said, responding to a question about possibly working out their differences.
“I’ve had a lot of surprises in my life, disappointments, betrayals, so I’m kind of used to it,” he added. Hall also alluded to being “involved with some pretty shady characters over the years.”
He went on to vent about his underrecognized contributions to Hall & Oates, pointing out, “The songs with his lead vocal are the songs he wrote, and all the other ones, which is about 90 percent, are the ones I wrote.”

In the entertainment business, years of partnership can mean a lot. And when you take that to beyond five decades, that’s almost unheard of. But for Daryl Hall and John Oates, those times became less dreams come true than nightmares of betrayal and mistrust, a one on one battle that ended the friendship of one of pop music’s seemingly most enduring duos.
So what, if anything, will it take for Hall and Oates to get back together again? According to Hall, “That ship has gone to the bottom of the ocean. I’ve had a lot of surprises in my life, disappointments, betrayals, so I’m kind of used to it.”
The rift between Hall and Oates isn’t quite as buried in their history as some might think, considering they go back 50 years. Even as recently as 2021, John Oates said, ”I’ll use a cliché to describe our relationship.

Daryl Hall Says He Will Never Again Perform With John Oates: “That Ship Has Gone To Bottom Of Ocean”

Daryl Hall and John Oates’ musical partnership resulted in some of pop’s most enduring tunes – but it seems the chances of them ever teaming up again is somewhere between zero and zero.
The pair have hits to their name including Maneater, I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do) and Out of Touch, but their partnership hit an impasse in 2023 when Oates set about selling his stake in their publishing company, and Hall filed a lawsuit to prevent him, calling Oates’ move “the ultimate partnership betrayal.”
Now, in an interview with The Times of London, Hall was asked about the prospect of reuniting with Oates, or had that ship sailed? He replied:
That ship has gone to the bottom of the ocean,” Hall says. “I’ve had a lot of surprises in my life, disappointments, betrayals, so I’m kind of used to it.” And he added: “I...

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore's second rom-com together is climbing the streaming chart, as 50 First Dates sits at number five on the Prime Video chart. It's a great Valentine's Day date night movie and has plenty of charm and emotion. The movie follows a vet in Hawaii named Henry (Sandler) who falls for Lucy (Barrymore) with short-term memory loss. Basically, she forgets everything that happened the day before when she wakes up.
Her father and brother, played by Blake Clarke and a hilarious Sean Astin, are very protective of Lucy. Since she's "stuck" in the day she lost her memory in an accident, they attempt to play along with the idea that she wasn't in an accident. But love blooms between Henry and Lucy, despite his having to woo her constantly.
The film opened 21 years ago, on Feb. 13, 2004, just in time for Valentine's Day, and became an instant crowd-pleaser...

One of Adam Sandler's most underrated and divisive comedies is finally returning to streaming this February. Sandler's run of comedies from 1995 to 2008 is nothing short of legendary. Within that time, the actor and writer released Happy Gilmore, The Wedding Singer, The Waterboy, Punch-Drunk-Love, 50 First Dates, The Longest Yard, and You Don't Mess with the Zohan (this writer's personal favorite). But, the film that kicked it all off was Billy Madison, and it's finally coming back to streaming.
Billy Madison arrives on Hulu on Feb. 1; it was directed by Tamra Davis, and co-written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy (Happy Gilmore) and is one of Sandler's most underrated comedies. Released in 1995, the film follows 27-year-old Billy Madison (Sandler) who is set to take over his father's hotel empire. However, his father (Darren McGavin) has one demand before he inherits the fortune: for his son to go back and finish school.

Netflix is ringing in the holidays with a first look at the upcoming sequel Happy Gilmore 2. On Christmas Day, the streamer released a teaser trailer for Happy Gilmore 2, showcasing the reunion between Adam Sandler's Happy Gilmore and Christopher McDonald's Shooter McGavin.
The trailer was released on social media along with the phrase, "Have a Happy New Year with Happy Gilmore 2. Coming to Netflix in 2025." The half-minute teaser unveils the first official footage from the sequel, picking up with a look at Happy back on the golf course — in his familiar hockey jersey, no less. Another major moment in the teaser takes place in a cemetery by the grave of "Chubbs" Peterson, Happy's mentor in the original film played by the late Carl Weathers. While brief, the moment is clearly tense, hinting at much more to come from the two reuniting in the full film. Check out the trailer below.

Ben Stiller became a household name after starring in several hit movies during the 1990s and early 2000s. However, the actor says people often mistake him for fellow comedy actor, Adam Sandler.

Ben Stiller doesn’t think ‘Tropic Thunder’ could be made today because “edgier comedy is harder to do”.The 58-year-old actor starred in and directed the 2009 satirical action comedy - which also starred Jack Black, Tom Cruise, Steve Coogan and Robert Downey Jr. - and has now admitted the film likely wouldn’t be greenlit today because of its controversial elements. When Collider asked if he could see ‘Tropic Thunder’ coming out now, he said: “I doubt it. Obviously, in this environment, edgier comedy is just harder to do. Definitely not at the scale we made it at, too, in terms of the economics of the business.“I think even at the time we were fortunate to get it made, and I credit that, actually, to Steven Spielberg and DreamWorks. He read it and was like, ‘Alright, let's make this thing.’ It's a very inside movie when you think about it.

Move over Community movie, there’s a new project generating ceaseless updates concerning every minute element of production: Happy Gilmore 2. We’ve heard a lot about the making of Adam Sandler’s highly anticipated sequel, from the nightmarish casting call, to the Travis Kelce cameo, to the fact that the 70-year-old alligator who played the gator that ate Chubbs’ hand is totally available to come back, presumably as a ghost.
But one piece of Happy Gilmore 2 news is, admittedly, pretty intriguing: Ben Stiller will be reprising the role of the abusive seniors’ home employee known simply as “Hal L.”
This news spread after photos of a mustachioed Stiller on the set of Happy Gilmore 2 were posted online.
Stiller was recently asked about the role during an interview with Collider, and the Zoolander star suggested that there might be more to his dirtbag character than meets the eye.

You don't get the opportunity to play Hal L that often. Weirdly, I got to do Hal L. in Hubie Halloween a few years ago. He had him at the beginning of that movie working at this insane asylum. So, Hal L. I'm saying this now in retrospect because I just did it was so much fun.

Ben Stiller was “always ready” to play Hal L again for ‘Happy Gilmore 2’.The 58-year-old actor returns as the sadistic retirement home orderly alongside Adam Sandler’s unlikely golfing superstar Happy Gilmore for the upcoming sequel to the 1996 comedy classic, and Stiller has now stressed he has been patiently waiting to reprise the role since the original came out nearly 30 years ago.He told Collider: “You don't get the opportunity to play Hal L that often.“Hal L — I'm saying this now in retrospect because I just did it — was so much fun. As we were doing, and I was there with Adam, I was flashing back to whatever it was, however many years ago, and just being so grateful that we're both still here and able to connect.”The ‘Zoolander’ star added it was his friendship with Sander, also 58, was one of the main driving forces for returning for the follow-up flick.

On November 29th, HBO will release its documentary about the late 1970s to early 1980s soft rock wave that is now colloquially known as “yacht rock” as if the guys who invented the term didn’t already nail the untold story.
In Yacht Rock: A Dockumentary, HBO will continue its Music Box Film series with an examination of an oft-mocked but still beloved era of music history, complete with profiles of yacht rock legends such as Michael McDonald, Kenny Loggins, Christopher Cross and, of course, Steely Dan. Over the last few years, these artists have enjoyed a resurgence in popularity as a new generation of listeners continue to fall in love with the smooth, soulful, jazzy fusion of rock and roll and other predominantly Black genres played by white guys with flowing hair and bushy beards kissed by an ocean breeze.
