He is famous as the lead singer of
Judas Priest
, one of the biggest heavy metal bands of the 1970s and 1980s.
Although he owned a variety of classic cars, Halford did not pass his driving test until he was 38 years old.
In 1998, he became the first major heavy metal star to "come out" as gay.
He originally left Judas Priest in 1991 and re-united with them in 2003 after a 12 year hiatus.
He is a huge fan of
Queen
and their former lead singer
Freddie Mercury
.
Although primarily based in the USA, he also owned a home in Walsall, England.
He is widely regarded as one of the most distinctive and flamboyant performers in heavy metal.
He lives in Phoenix, Arizona.He also owns homes in San Diego, Amsterdam and Walsall, United Kingdom.
His sister, Sue, was married to Judas Priest bassist Ian Hill from 1976 to 1984, making Halford and Ian ex-brothers in law.
In 2001, he fronted his third solo band, Halford.
He is a big fan of classical music as well as heavy rock and metal.
According to the Metallian .com site he was in a band called Lord Lucifer.
He was in a band called Hiroshima prior to Judas Priest.
