Sinéad O’Connor’s life and career were marked by cycles of rage and forgiveness. For the Irish singer-songwriter, the world’s ills and evils could be traced back to the Roman Empire—and the Roman Catholic Church in particular. Her beef with the Church didn’t repel her from religion, but propelled her into a perpetual search for meaning amid what she viewed as corruption, abuse, and injustice.
O’Connor’s fiery debut album, 1987’s The Lion and the Cobra, is rife with allegorical stories about war, ghosts, and slain dragons, signaling from the very start that she wasn’t just an artist, but a warrior. Her quest for justice and salvation deepened and matured over the years, reflected in her 1997 EP Gospel Oak, 2000’s Faith and Courage, and 2007’s ambitious Theology.
With her shaved head and steely persona, O’Connor was the unlikeliest of pop icons, but she inadvertently...

Faye Fantarrow, a singer-songwriter from Sunderland, England singer who’s been working with the Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart, has shared a new single, “Awol.”
“Awol” finds Fantarrow putting her spin on some classic songwriting themes — fast cars and fierce desire. Though anchored by the folky strum of an acoustic guitar, the song also incorporates thumping drums and Eighties-style synths as Fantarrow sings on the hook, “Right hand on the wheel/But my left hand’s loose/Got no mind but my body/And it’s owned by you.”

As eerily imaginative as he is impressively prolific, Mike Mignola (along with artist Ben Stenbeck) continues to explore the creepy confines of his ever-expanding "Mignolaverse" with the ongoing four-issue miniseries Koshchei in Hell. Following the further hellish adventures of the soulless sorcerer (and former foe of Hellboy) with a taste for fine wine and good books, Koshchei in Hell will be collected and published in hardcover by Dark Horse Comics this August, and we're honored to exclusively reveal Mignola's cover art for the upcoming collection!
Below, you can view Mignola's stunning cover art (which also features colors by Dave Stewart) as well as his process art for the Koshchei in Hell hardcover. Here's what Mignola himself had to say about creating this gorgeous cover:
“Your characters are like your children—and while you’re not supposed to have a favorite child, I think it’s probably fine to have a favorite character.

It was on January 4th, 1983 that the new-wave duo, Eurythmics, released their second album, which became an international wonder and topped music charts worldwide with the title track by same name. What to say about this gem of a song? Unforgettable, magnificent, catchy, smart.
The video was directed by Chris Ashbrook, and was filmed the same month of its release.
It was probably difficult for the critics to predict the durability Eurythmic’s music would demonstrate in time, as they seemed to still be eyeing them up back in the day:
They write dance songs about love, but the lyrics don’t make love sound like anything worth dancing about. Yet both say they’ve never been happier than they are now. Obviously, there is more going on here than initially meets the ear.

Terry Hall, the longtime voice of legendary ska group The Specials has died after what the band termed a brief illness. He was 63.
Hall and the Specials reached their widest appeal with the haunting, socially conscious “Ghost Town,” which spent three weeks at No. 1 on the U.K. singles charts in 1981. The song was a commentary on economic strife in Margaret Thatcher’s England and the social unrest of the era, including riots that year in Britain. It was named “Single of the Year” by all three of the major UK music magazines.
The Specials were formed in the late ’70s by songwriter/keyboardist Dammers, vocalist Tim Strickland, guitarist/vocalist Lynval Golding, drummer Silverton Hutchinson and bassist Horace Panter (a.k.a. Sir Horace Gentleman). Strickland was replaced by Hall shortly after the band’s formation. They were at the vanguard of the the 2 Tone ska revival of the late 1970s in Britain,...

Don’t Pick Up the Phone is a Netflix true crime documentary series brought to us by Wag Entertainment, and directed by Sara Mast.
A very bizarre case that one has to see (or hear about) to believe.
About the Doc Series
This documentary series follows the investigation the case of a hoax caller who somehow managed to convince the managers of various fast-food outlets throughout the U.S. to strip-search, and proceed with sexual acts, on employees. All it required was a phone a call.
Don’t Pick Up the Phone
In three episodes we are told this story, and how it escalates to massive court cases – criminal and civil.
The first episode details how this man – claiming to be a police officer – conned restaurant managers to go through with an absolutely ludicrous procedure, and how the employees would comply out of fear of losing their jobs.

Lionel Richie soared. Pat Benatar roared. Duran Duran stumbled but stayed sophisticated. Eminem was Eminem.
The four acts found very different ways to celebrate on Saturday night, but all can now say they’re Rock & Roll Hall of Famers. So are Carly Simon, Eurythmics, Harry Belafonte, Judas Priest and Dolly Parton, who gave the honor an enthusiastic embrace after temporarily turning it down.
The first act inducted at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles after a memorable speech from a shaven-headed Robert Downey Jr., Duran Duran took the stage and launched into their 1981 breakthrough hit “Girls on Film.”
The shrieking crowd was there for it, but the music wasn’t. The band was all but inaudible other than singer Simon Le Bon, whose vocals were essentially a cappella.
It was a fun if inauspicious beginning to a mostly slick and often triumphant show.

Dolly Parton was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Saturday night, concluding a journey in which she initially attempted to withdraw from consideration before subsequently agreeing to the honour.
Introduced by Pink, Parton delivered a rousing speech that served as a keen reminder of why the legendary country music singer and songwriter is a rocker at heart.
“I’m a rock star now!” Parton began, as reported by Rolling Stone.

British singer songwriter Lewis Capaldi has said that he’d like to form a supergroup with Elton John, Ed Sheeran and his friend Niall Horan.
The 26-year-old even suggested potential band names for the foursome which he recalled discussing with his piano player.
Speaking on the The Zach Sang Show Capaldi said: “I would love to do it. Me and my piano player have a massive list of band names. We’ve got hundreds now.
“My favourite is Pleasure Kit. Also, Rock and Roll Los Angeles 1966,” he suggested.
“It would be me, Niall, Ed, Elton. Who else? That’s a good foursome…I wonder who comes out on top in that foursome? Just us four guys, hanging out,” Capaldi added.
The singer also joked that he was waiting for Harry Styles and his main competition, Ed Sheeran to take a break from releasing music before he put anything else out.

Charlie Puth has claimed that Ellen DeGeneres’s record label “disappeared” after he recorded his first EP, as he discussed Greyson Chance’s recent allegations against the presenter.
Last month, former teen pop star Greyson Chance spoke out against DeGeneres, claiming that she had “controlled” and then “completely abandoned” him after signing him to her now-defunct record label, eleveneleven, in 2010, when he was 12.
The presenter originally discovered Chance after a clip of him singing Lady Gaga’s “Paparazzi” went viral, with DeGeneres inviting the pre-teen on her show and starting a trend in which she would often interview the stars of popular internet videos.
DeGeneres has not responded to the claims, although sources claimed that the presenter “went above and beyond” for Chance.
Now singer Puth, who also signed with eleveneleven in 2011 after DeGeneres saw a viral clip of him singing Adele’s “Someone Like You”, has spoken about his own experiences with eleveneleven.

The sports world and the city of Los Angeles are paying tribute to Vin Scully, the legendary sports announcer that called 67 seasons of Dodgers baseball. Scully died Tuesday at the age of 94, leaving behind a towering legacy as one of the most prominent, skilled and dedicated play-by-play announcers ever.

This post may be shorter than my previous diatribes about the wonderful world of Black Hammer, for multiple reasons. One, I’ve said most of the things I could say. Two, this is an odds and sods collection to begin with, so it’s small and random and miscellaneous and will not stand the weight of serious criticism. There may be other reasons as well, but I think those two will do.
In any case, I have written a bunch about the previous Black Hammer books – the most recent was the flashback Black Hammer ’45 , and that one links further back in turn. And, frankly, how much background do you need? This is a pastiche superhero universe, with mixed DC and Marvel influences, and anyone who knows superhero comics from the second half of the 20th century will find all of it deeply recognizable.

Late Thursday evening, Lil Nas X took the stage at the Marquis Marriott Hotel in New York City as the youngest honoree of the night as he accepted the Hal David Starlight Award at the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The honor, presented to young songwriters impacting the music industry through original songs, was presented to the 23-year-old artist two-and-a-half hours into the 51st annual induction ceremony. The night may have been dragging on with back-to-back 10-plus minute speeches punctuated with equally long performances, but Lil Nas X wouldn’t keep the audience for long.

It’s not every day you get a chance to restart your career, but Annie Lennox is having one of those moments.
The iconic singer, who achieved mainstream fame with the British music duo Eurythmics, posted a photo of a letter she received from a Los Angeles radio music coordinator named Kylie, who encouraged her to send in samples of her music for a chance to get radio play.
Lennox, 62, blacked out the name of the radio station, but included the full letter on her Facebook page on Thursday.
“I came across your music on line and really like what I heard!

The Netherlands' arch-provocateur and filmmaker extraordinaire Paul Verhoeven is back in cinemas right now with Elle. A characteristically confrontational and provocative thriller, it spins a rape-revenge storyline into a mordantly funny, blackly comic and off-kilter odyssey, and has garnered an Oscar nomination for extraordinary lead Isabelle Huppert in the process.

In over 25 years of making comics, Hellboy creator Mike Mignola has established himself as a creator with such a distinct aesthetic that not only is it possible to identify his work on sight — macabre yet charming, full of shadows so deep and black they look alive, hiding horrors within — but also the work of those he’s chosen to collaborate with. You can always tell when a work is set in the Mignola-verse, and part of the fun of following along is seeing Mignola’s unique stylings applied to familiar genres and story archetypes — the latest of which being Frankenstein’s famous monster. In this month’s new graphic novel Frankenstein Underground (you can read the first chapter here), Mignola, artist Ben Stenbeck, and colorist Dave Stewart spin a Frankenstein tale spun out of a corner of the Hellboy universe, one that takes the iconic monster on a weird, Jules Verne...

Joe Golem #2
Written by Mike Mignola and Christopher Golden
Artwork by Patric Reynolds
Letters by Clem Robins
Colors by Dave Stewart
Published by Dark Horse Comics
Joe Golem: Occult Detective #2 picks up where issue one stopped and builds on the previous issue where Joe Golem saves children from The Rat Catcher, a water monster. Now, Joe continues to search Lower Manhattan for The Rat Catcher. The artwork from Reynolds is dark and gritty, which fits the detective story just right. The rough nature of the artwork fits well with setting up the mood of the comic as well as the action scenes. The writing from Mignola and Golden shows wit with the sly nature of Joe. Furthermore, the comic’s plot unfolds its mystery at a steady pace. All together, Joe Golem: Occult Detective # 2 stands out as an interesting detective story.
The issue shows Joe’s investigation of The Rat Catcher.

Two words could be used to describe comics in 2015: scandal and rebirth. The scandals happened off the pages at both companies large and small, and the rebirth happened in the comics themselves.
Graphic Policy reported that former Dark Horse Comics editor-in-chief Scott Allie bit writer Joe Harris (X-Files Season Ten) at the Boom! Studios party at San Diego Comic Con, and he was demoted to “executive editor” even though an assault of this kind would be grounds for dismissal at almost any other company. There was also another ethical breach at Dark Horse when The Rainbow Hub journalist Emma Houxbois reported that former Bleeding Cool editor Hanna Means-Shannon broke a Dark Horse-related story while it was under embargo and didn’t disclose the fact that she was taking a job with the company.
Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso’s dismissal of African-American comics fans and creators when asked why...

Two Brothers
Written and drawn by Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá
Published by Dark Horse Comics
“Everything improves after the end of a war.”
Based off of the novel The Brothers by Brazilian novelist Milton Hatoum, Two Brothers charts the post-wwii life of a family as a continuing war fought not with guns and grenades, but with words and betrayal. Sometimes, it is a hot war, but most of the time it is a cold war that stretches all the way to twin brothers Yaqub and Omar’s childhood. Although they are physically twins, the two boys are nothing alike. “The twins were opposites inhabiting the same body and sleeping under the same roof,” the narrator explains. Yaqub, the brother sent away to Lebanon for five years, is the brooding and serious one, returning home without ever knowing why his parents sent him to live with relatives half a world away.

After being plagued by delays and almost two years after the first issue came out, Sandman Overture comes to a close with a reset button, a twist, and just a dash of primal energy as Morpheus needs the help of both the anthropomorphic embodiments of Desire (disguised as Dream in cat form) and Hope to remake a universe, which he almost caused to be destroyed when he decided to intervene in the natural death of a star. Neil Gaiman strings together ideas about pride, hope, and the nature of the reality in the florid language of his script, which he gets to take a break from in a cluttered two page spread featuring Delirium of the Endless. About five years ago I made my way over to Montana Street in Santa Monica to attend a screening of the magnificently loopy adaptation of Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers, directed by Paul Verhoeven, which was showing at the Aero Theater in Santa Monica. The screening was a star-studded affair, featuring Verhoeven in an on-stage interview with Ed Neumeier, the film’s screenwriter, and a couple of the other artists and craftsmen who were involved in the making of the film. (They were stars to the packed house anyway, even though I can’t for the life of me remember who else comprised the panel.) Before the screening, Verhoeven set up shop to sign copies of his recently published book, the somewhat controversial Jesus of Nazareth, a historical account of Jesus’ life written with matter-of-fact detail and iconoclasm from Verhoeven’s singular perspective as a member of the group of...

After getting his start in his native Holland with wild, sexually explicit dramas like Spetters and Turkish Delight (a 1974 Oscar nominee for Best Foreign-Language Film), director Paul Verhoeven came to Hollywood in the Eighties and rebranded himself as a can-do-anything sci-fi filmmaker with a slightly satircal bent. If you needed to make a film about a cyborg cop (Robocop) or send Arnold Schwarzenegger to Mars (Total Recall), he was your man. But after tooling around postapocalytic Detroit and outer space, Verhoeven took a step back to his eroticsploitation, semi-perverse roots to make 1992's Basic Instinct.

In a career spanning more than two decades and spawning over 100 movie soundtracks and anthems, composer Ar Rahman has been hailed as a global music icon.
