Picture this: A restaurant in Rome, a chance encounter as table mates sharing space over dinner and an inspired conversation about fashion, art, film, marketing and more. It’s precisely that scene, which unfolded in Italy last April as Amazon MGM Studios head of global marketing Sue Kroll found herself seated across from Loewe creative director Jonathan Anderson at a last-minute dinner ahead of a glitzy Rome red carpet premiere for Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, released by the studio and featuring costumes by the acclaimed Cfda international designer of the year.
The meeting, meal and chat produced the pictures that have Hollywood buzzing — in a good way — thanks to a surprise collaboration. The veteran top Hollywood executive stars in the Spanish luxury brand’s new spring-summer 2025 pre-collection campaign alongside of the moment stars like The Bear’s Ayo Edebiri, Baby Reindeer breakout Richard Gadd, Queer’s Drew Starkey and The White Lotus actor Leo Woodall.

Film Constellation is launching international sales on “About a Hero,” directed by Piotr Winiewicz, an AI-driven murder mystery set to open the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam (IDFA). Variety premieres the film’s teaser here.
The film is an adaptation of a script co-written by an AI trained on Werner Herzog’s body of work, with his permission. Winiewicz was inspired by a quote from Herzog himself stating: “A computer will not create a film as good as mine in 4,500 years.” The result is a fictional narrative that is ironically self-reflective, interlaced with a collection of interviews with artists, philosophers and scientists reflecting on the notion of originality, authenticity, immortality and soul in the age of AI.
When a local factory worker named Dorem Clery dies under mysterious circumstances, the film’s narrator, Werner Herzog, travels to Getunkirchenburg to investigate his perplexing death. But Herzog is not who he seems,...

The sweet spot for many of the best films of the year, arriving before the final month of 2024, November is packed with robust offerings of Cannes, Berlinale, and fall festival highlights, along with must-see documentaries, and even a major studio movie or two.
17. Dream Team (Lev Kalman and Whitney Horn; Nov. 15)
Following their singular take on the Western genre with Two Plains and a Fancy, filmmakers Lev Kalman & Whitney Horn returned to the festival circuit earlier this year with Dream Team, an absurdist homage to ’90s basic-cable TV thrillers. Starring Esther Garrel and Alex Zhang Hungtai, with a producing team that includes I Saw the TV Glow director Jane Schoenbrun, Leonardo Goi said in his Rotterdam review, “Like its predecessors, Dream Team hangs in a hazy, oneiric region; what the film is about is a lot easier to discuss than the entrancing feeling it evokes. Over the last decade, perhaps no filmmaker has expressed lust, longing, and simmering sensuality on the big screen with as much verve as Luca Guadagnino. From the May-December, sun-kissed romance of Call Me By Your Name, to the cannibals-on-the-lam love affair of Bones And All, to this year's intoxicating tennis-based ménage à trois Challengers, the Italian auteur has been bringing sexy back since long before it seemingly went away. And with his latest, William S. Burroughs adaptation Queer, the filmmaker — working from a script by his Challengers collaborator Justin Kuritzkes — looks to have done it again. The movie stars Daniel Craig as ageing, isolated American ex-pat William Lee, who finds himself seeking connection in Mexico City when he becomes infatuated with young buck Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey). Check out the swoon worthy first trailer below:

Daniel Craig stars in Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of William S Burrough’s famous novel Queer, which now has a new trailer.
Next month will see A24 release Queer, Luca Guadagnino’s adaptation of the William S Burroughs autobiographical novel about love, desire and self-loathing. Daniel Craig stars as as William Lee, the film’s protagonist, joined by Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, Henry Zaga, Andra Ursuta, Michael Borremans and David Lowery.
Guadagnino’s Challengers made plenty of waves when it released in cinemas earlier this year, and the filmmaker has wisely chosen again work with that film’s composers, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, who return to score Queer.
Here’s the synopsis for the new film:

Daniel Craig is more than deserving of being called one of the greatest actors ever. It was his appearances as Agent 007 in the James Bond franchise that helped elevate his career into the stratosphere. The 56-year-old English actor is best known as an action star, but his upcoming film directed by the iconic Luca Guadagnino features the legend’s venture into uncharted territory.

Born September 1, 1996, Zendaya rose to fame as a child star on the Disney Channel, with fan-favorite characters in “Shake It Up” and “K.C. Undercover.” The singer and actress soon started dabbling in feature films, where she earned the plum role of Mj, Tom Holland‘s love interest, in Marvel’s “Spider-Man” movies. Zendaya’s biggest claim to fame was in 2020, when she became the youngest-ever Emmy winner in the Best Drama Actress category for playing a teen drug addict on “Euphoria.” Her career continues to blossom thanks to recent releases like “Challengers” (directed by Luca Guadagnino) and “Dune” (directed by Denis Villeneuve).

Awards season is underway, and the Gotham nominations are only a small blip for what could be on Oscar voters radar.
While any nomination (or win) from any industry group marks a chance at gaining momentum, it’s important to remember the Oscar punditry golden rule: It’s not about what everyone wants to win, it’s about what will win. And critics are not Oscar voters. Each Gothams category is determined by a set of five distinct critics and journalists from various disciplines.
The slate of feature film nominees, with Sean Baker’s hilarious and moving dramedy “Anora” leading the charge with four nods, is yet another compelling reason to think that the Neon-distributed Palme d’Or winner has what it takes to go all the way in the race. On the other hand, I wouldn’t read too much into the complete shutout of films such as...

At this stage of the Oscar race, several things are certain. Palme d’Or winner “Anora” (Neon), which scored four nominations on October 29 for the first of the award shows of the season, the Gothams, remains the frontrunner in the Oscar race. Sean Baker’s film is followed by Netflix’s French Oscar submission “Emilia Pérez,” which was not eligible for Best Feature but didn’t land an international nod, either. Does “Emilia Pérez” need a Gothams nod in its pursuit of Oscar glory? No.

“Anora,” a free-wheeling comedy about a sex worker who becomes entangled with the family of a Russian oligarch, led the Gotham Awards, picking up four nominations, including a nod for best feature.
“Nickel Boys,” the story of two African-American teens who are sent to an abusive reform school, and “I Saw the TV Glow,” a psychological horror film about high schoolers who begin to lose touch with reality, were close behind with three nods apiece.
“Nickel Boys” will vie for best feature alongside “Anora.” Other nominees for the top prize include the erotic drama “Babygirl,” the black comedy “A Different Man” and “Challengers,” a love triangle that unfolds against the backdrop of professional tennis. There were several notable omissions, with critically heralded films like “The Brutalist” and “Conclave” passed over for a best feature nomination. “The Brutalist” did earn two nominations for its star Adrien Brody and for the supporting turn of Guy Pearce.

The first trailer for Luca Guadagnino’s forthcoming film Queer is a sensory overload of epic proportions. Daniel Craig leads the film, set for release Nov. 27, as William Lee. He brings to the screen a tangible sense of nervous curiosity as he circles Drew Starkey’s Eugene Allerton. “I want to talk to you,” he tells him, pausing before adding a caveat: “Without speaking.”
The trailer pays close attention to movement and touch. There are centipedes that crawl across the screen, accompanied by the subtle, chilling sound of one hundred legs moving.

The first trailer for Queer, directed by acclaimed filmmaker Luca Guadagnino, has just dropped, unveiling a sensual and dreamlike adaptation of William S. Burroughs’ semi-autobiographical novel. Starring Daniel Craig and Outer Banks breakout Drew Starkey, the A24 film dives deep into an intense, surreal romance set against the backdrop of 1940s Mexico City.
Queer centers around William Lee (Craig), an isolated American expat drawn to Eugene Allerton (Starkey), a former Navy serviceman whose initial indifference only intensifies Lee’s obsession. The film, penned by Justin Kuritzkes, brings to life Burroughs’ enigmatic narrative, capturing the inner turmoil of Lee’s desires and vulnerabilities. Guadagnino describes the film as “a deeply personal movie about the inescapable quest for recognition in another’s gaze.”
Since its Venice Film Festival premiere, Queer has garnered praise for its audacious approach and Craig’s transformative performance. Variety critic Owen Glieberman highlighted Craig’s portrayal as “bold and trippy,...

Award-winning director and producer Luca Guadagnino re-teamed with Challengers screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes for his latest film, a period romance titled Queer. The 1950s story stars Daniel Craig, who finds himself in Mexico City and infatuated with a younger man, played by Drew Starkey. The Queer trailer has now arrived, soundtracked by Sinead O’Connor’s cover of Nirvana’s “No Apologies.” Watch it below.
In the sun-soaked first look at the film, which was was based on the 1985 novel of the same name by William S. Burroughs, Craig and Starkey meet in a bar before striking up a physical relationship. “I want to talk to you without speaking,” Craig says, and it all feels quite Call Me By Your Name between the undeniable chemistry and gorgeous vignettes of summer in Mexico.
When Queer premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, reception was generally positive, and Craig’s performance received especially favorable buzz.

Hot off of last year’s Challengers, Luca Guadagnino returns with a new intimate story with Daniel Craig as he strays from his solitary lifestyle when he suddenly finds someone to connect with. A24 has released the melodic and, at times, surreal trailer of Queer.
The plot of Queer reads: “1950. William Lee, an American expat in Mexico City, spends his days almost entirely alone, except for a few contacts with other members of the small American community. His encounter with Eugene Allerton, an expat former soldier, new to the city, shows him, for the first time, that it might be finally possible to establish an intimate connection with somebody.” That Queer is also based on a William S. Burroughs novel adds a bit more excitement to the Guadagnino project, which has been in development since 2022.

Leave it to filmmaker Luca Guadagnino to redefine a movie star before our very eyes. The director who landed Timothée Chalamet on the map in 2017's heart-wrenching romance "Call Me by Your Name" and most recently turned a sports drama starring the triumvirate of Zendaya, Josh O'Connor, and Mike Faist into one of this year's most exhilarating theatrical experiences with "Challengers" isn't even close to being done just yet. His latest film might also be one of his most anticipated ever, taking aim at the life and times of famous American writer William S. Burroughs in what's arguably his most complicated and impressively adult subject matter yet. Not only does "Queer" live up to every unspoken promise of its title, as I reviewed for /Film here, but it also delivers what might very well go down as Daniel Craig's best performance yet.

"I want to talk to you... without speaking..." A24 has unveiled the first official trailer for Queer, the second film from Italian director Luca Guadagnino out this year (he also opened Challengers in spring). Queer, adapted from the William S. Burroughs' novel, originally premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival (here's my review) with stops at the Toronto, Zurich, London, and New York Film Festivals as well. Set in the 1950s - Daniel Craig stars as drifter Lee, who recounts his life in Mexico City among American expatriate college students and bar owners surviving on part-time jobs and G.I. Bill benefits. He is driven to pursue a young man named Allerton, based on Adelbert Lewis Marker. Drew Starkey co-stars as his infatuation Allerton, with a cast including Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, Henrique Zaga, Omar Apollo, & Colin Bates. It’s been quite a prolific year for Luca Guadagnino. After the strike-delayed Challengers finally arrived in April, he embarked on production on After the Hunt this summer all while readying his William S. Burroughs adaptation Queer for a fall festival premiere. Led by Daniel Craig, Drew Starkey, Jason Schwartzman, Henry Zaga, and Lesley Manville, the film finally picked up distribution from A24, who will roll it out in theaters beginning November 27. Ahead of the release, the first trailer has now arrived.

Daniel Craig is sharing what he learned from “a wise old queen.”
A24 released the first trailer for Luca Guadagnino‘s “Queer” on Tuesday. In 1950s Mexico City, William Lee (Craig), an American ex-pat in his late 40s, leads a solitary life amidst a small American community. However, the arrival in town of Eugene Allerton (Drew Starkey), a young student, stirs William into finally establishing a meaningful connection with someone.
The trailer shows the pair locking eyes for the first time before William awkwardly introduces himself. Sexual tensions rise and the two eventually end up in bed together. By the end, we hear a nearly unrecognizable Lesley Manville utter, “What are you so afraid of? The door’s already open, can’t close it now. All he can do is look away. But why would you?”
“Queer” is written by Justin Kuritzkes and is based on the 1985 novel from William S. Burroughs.

“Queer” is almost here.
Luca Guadgnino’s latest, which stars Daniel Craig and is based on a slender William S. Burroughs novel of the same name, hits theaters on November 27, courtesy of A24. And there’s a brand-new trailer that you can watch, right now, below.
In “Queer” Craig plays William Lee, a Burroughs stand-in, who becomes infatuated with a young man named Allerton (Drew Starkey) while careening through the underground nightlife of Mexico City in the 1940s. (Lee is there to acquire a drug that he thinks will grant him psychic abilities – because of course he is.) Jason Schwartzman, Lesley Manville and filmmaker David Lowery also star.
Burroughs wrote “Queer” while waiting to be sentences for the murder of his common-law wife Joan Vollmer, who he shot in the head while attempting a “William Tell routine.” (This incident was dramatized in David Cronenberg’s adaptation of Burroughs’ “Naked Lunch.

Luca Guadagnino officially has two Oscar contenders in the mix — both of which are written by Justin Kuritzkes.
Auteur Guadagnino reunited with his “Challengers” screenwriter Kuritzkes for “Queer,” which Guadagnino commissioned Kuritzkes to adapt from William S. Burroughs’ novella. Check out the trailer for “Queer” below.
Best Actor frontrunner Daniel Craig leads the film as William Lee, a gay expatriate living in Mexico City in the 1940s. Lee becomes fascinated by Eugene Allerton (“Outer Banks” star Drew Starkey), who is a young discharged Navy veteran. The duo embark on a romance, which at times is one-sided; later, they travel to South America for an ayahuasca experience to reach enlightenment.
“Queer” also stars Lesley Manville, Jason Schwartzman, and Omar Apollo. The A24 film debuted at the Venice Film Festival.
Directing “Queer” was a lifelong pursuit for Guadagnino, who said during the Venice press conference that Burroughs’ novel resonated with him decades ago.

The 19-year-old protagonist of Giovanni Tortorici’s ‘Diciannove’ – Leonardo Gravina, reminded me quite a lot of myself from that age. He has next-to-none self-awareness and a bloated self-esteem. Just out of his adolescence and technically an adult, he considers the world his oyster. Much like Julie from ‘The Worst Person in the World’, he tries different modes of education as if they are tempting dishes on a restaurant menu! Of course, he has no baggage of responsibilities weighing on his shoulders. He can be who he wants – at least he feels like he can.
In Tortorici’s loosely autobiographical film, co-produced by Luca Guadagnino, he looks inward into the chaotic journey he went through to find a sense of mental stability and experience growth. In his film, we meet Leonardo, leaving his hometown of Palermo and stepping into London to study economics. He resides with his older sister and her friend.

The Piano Lesson is the third film adaptation of the work of playwright August Wilson, whose bibliography and legacy have been championed by Denzel Washington. It serves as the feature directorial debut of Washington’s son, Malcolm Washington, and is not only an excellent adaptation of its source material but also one of the most auspicious first features in recent memory.
The Piano Lesson Review
The Piano Lesson follows a family who get into conflict over the future of a valuable family heirloom — a piano dating back to their freed slave ancestors, which they come to believe might be haunted. Wilson has a very dense, complex style that previous cinematic adaptions have struggled to navigate, but The Piano Lesson stands up to the challenge.

Luca Guadagnino and Lionsgate announced that the “Call Me by Your Name” and “Queer” director is in final discussions to film a new version of Bret Eason Ellis’ dark horror novel “American Psycho,” nearly 25 years after the same company released Mary Harron’s satirical adaptation. In a key role that elevated his career, the 2000 film starred Christian Bale as yuppie investment banker-turned-serial killer Patrick Bateman.
It’s the kind of announcement destined to raise eyebrows. Guadagnino is in a career sweet spot after “Challengers” and “Queer” this year (and “After the Hunt” in post); he already has many projects in the works, including “Separate Rooms” with Josh O’Connor and a Thomas Mann adaptation in early development. So why is he choosing a remake — and for a film that doesn’t seem that long ago?
New versions of older films are not unusual. Even the word “remake” is tricky here — does that apply with adaptations?...

¿Quién interpretará a Patrick Bateman?

Two weeks after “Challengers” announced that it would be submitting in the comedy/musical categories at the Golden Globes (as opposed to the drama races), the tennis film is now expected to receive major nominations in Best Film Comedy/Musical and in Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress for Zendaya. Note that it’s also in the Top 6 for a Best Score bid, though that category doesn’t distinguish between genres. (See Golden Globes odds.)
“Challengers” stars Zendaya as Tashi Duncan, Josh O’Connor as Patrick Zweig, and Mike Faist as Art Donaldson, three fictional tennis pros who inexplicably bcome involved in a love triangle. Luca Guadagnino directed the fan-fave film from an original script by Justin Kuritzkes. The pulse-pounding musical score is composed by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross.
In the Best Film Comedy/Musical category at Gold Derby, “Challengers” is now in sixth place to win the Golden Globe with 18/1 odds.

With Luca Guadagnino set to direct a new take on Bret Easton Ellis’s novel, speculation abounds on who should play the vain serial killer
Earlier this week it was announced that Luca Guadagnino was in final negotiations to direct a new adaptation of American Psycho, instantly igniting an online discourse that refused to die down.
Inevitably, the bulk of the discourse was overwhelmingly negative. Some corners of the internet were upset that Guadagnino had the opportunity to direct The Shards – another, newer, Bret Easton Ellis book – but instead chose to work over old ground. Many seemed to be the “But it’s already perfect” camp, citing both Mary Harron’s impeccable 2000 adaptation and the lukewarm reception doled out to Guadagnino’s weirdly austere Suspiria remake.

The fall festival season has wrapped up! Each year, dozens of movies premiere at festivals with distributors looking to launch them before they’re released in theaters or on streaming services. But dozens more are independent films without distribution that came to the festivals looking to be discovered. This year, over 200 movies made their world premieres across the Venice Film Festival, the Toronto International Film Festival, the Telluride Film Festival, and the New York Film Festival, and we’ve seen some big name movie sales across all four.
